- mandarin, on 10/12/2007, -14/+70Do you even know whats a DS lite?
- dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -12/+61They should also take into account that I traded my PSP back *in* to get a DS Lite. I guess you can scratch that PSP sales number down to 27,190.
- Yarnage, on 10/12/2007, -12/+58@Jeebugorn
What? It's newer than the original DS but the hardware capability is the same. Think of it as just a different look and a nicer screen (something most said the PSP already had).
It's obvious that the lack of good games on the PSP is seriously hurting Sony. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+52@Darren07,
That's actually Wrong.
Nintendo said that they had sold 16M DS worldwide while Sony said that they had SHIPPED 17M PSP worldwide
Selling and Shipping is not the same.
Actually DS is selling more than the PSP. - MysticX, on 10/12/2007, -12/+55Try to face the facts, PSP is losing, very badly.
- MysticX, on 10/12/2007, -10/+35Are you stupid or something? Sony has SHIPPED 17M units, and DS has SOLD 16,8M units!
- Darren07, on 10/12/2007, -5/+26well, the busines speople care of course.
and I think the DS Lite will outsell the PSP in the U.S. as well. we'll have to wait a week for harware sales figures to emerge - armbar, on 10/12/2007, -6/+27You're right, nobody bought Smash Bros, and the GC to play it on.
http://everythingandnothing.org.uk/vg/worldtotals.php - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+22Total NDS (normal + lite) sold in Japan: 2.924.644
Total PSP sold in Japan: 868.537
In usa, the last months, PSP is winning by a few K's (let's see what Lite changes) and in Europe DS is winning by some more K's - idonthack, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26I added it up.
DS came out at 4,594,240 sold (america only)
PSP came out at 4,491,061 sold (america only)
Digg him down. - Lososaurus, on 10/12/2007, -9/+26Here's what people don't seem to realize in the PSP vs. DS numbers fight, I'll capitalize the words that make a difference(and I'm quoting both links supplied in the writeup):
"the PSP system has quickly become a cultural icon and a market-altering force with more than 17 million units SHIPPED worldwide" -PSP
"To date, Nintendo DS has SOLD through more than 16 million units worldwide." -DS
There's a colossal difference between SHIPPED and SOLD.
-quoting myself from: http://www.digg.com/gaming/It_started_with_DS:_how_Nintendo_could_win_back_the_top_spot_in_games - Daedalus81, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22"In the US the PSP outsold the DS by a couple 10k. Even though the DS has been out a year more than the PSP the PSP leads the DS in worldwide sales by around a million. Quit acting like the DS is trumping the PSP it's more like neck and neck. Add to that, who the hell cares? I mean really. Play your PSP, play your DS. Be happy. "
Can I see the source of those figures? I'm just curious... - CornStarch, on 10/12/2007, -9/+24The DS is like Nintendo's Ipod. With the sales they're getting from it they have enough revenue to low ball the Wii. I can see them launching the Wii for around 200 now.
Times are tight and people just prefer bargins, that's why the PS2 is out selling the 360 in North America, why the DS is out selling the PSP, and why the Wii will outsell M$ and $ony. - spacemanspork, on 10/12/2007, -7/+20I don't understand all the talk about the hand held wars. They each have their own advantages. Which one is better depends entirely on the individual.
Why you should get the PSP: graphics are much better. The hardware is sleek. It can do craploads of things (movies, music). It can interface with memory sticks.
Why you should get a DS: fun games. long battery life which makes it actually GOOD for portable gaming. Much cheaper.
For me, it's choice is easy. I have a DS lite. I want my handheld gaming system to play games. If I wanted a portable media player, I'd easily take the PSP over the DS. But for me I looked at this: which system has games I want to play.
All the good PSP games I want to play are PS2 ports that I think I'd rather play on the PS2. Except Silent Hill Origins which isn't out yet and I would prefer to play that on a larger screen.
The DS has so many games I want. Advance Wars DS, Trauma Center, Mario Kart, Brain Age, WarioWare Touched...
It comes down to whether or not you're buying a pure gaming system or a portable media center and I wanted a gaming system. - treed, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17How is that surprising? PS2 is $129 right now. Similarly with the NGC. Plus, Microsoft has never done well in Japan.
- Darren07, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19I think the most surprising thing is that the PS2 beats the Xbox360 in the US, and the GameCube beats the 360 in Japan
- mayan, on 10/12/2007, -8/+19$199 for the Wii, would be a wonderful thing indeed.
- buddyglass, on 10/12/2007, -5/+15Actually these are the Japanese Sales figures so they have been onsale since March, so it is not "just released." Though they have been hard to find for awhile. I think the increase is due to NSMB. But still the DS has been selling 150,000+ since they launched it in March in Japan
- Darren07, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15Lol, so u haven't seen any videos of it? or screenshots perhaps?
and wind waker was far from bad - moofree, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15You missed out so much retral.
Go out and buy a Gamecube now just to (at least) play the Metroid Prime games. - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12Worldwide Nintendogs has outsold Halo (6.91 to 6.61 mil)? Wow, that's crazy.
Plus, looking at the charts, I count only 3 PSP titles, and 13 DS titles. - jwoelich, on 10/12/2007, -4/+12The article also failed to mention that your mother is a whore.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Actually in Europe It's impossible that Wii sells for more than 200€
Nintendo anounced that Wii won't cost more than 250$, and also anounced that they won't Make a 1$ = 1€, that the price would be converted correctly.
And 250$ are 200€ - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10>> That's like really poor and gay on your behalf... can't make your own arguement,
>> so you go and jack someone elses?
>>
It's called juxtaposition, and it's a perfectly valid tool inside a debate/argument. Careful! The quality of your education is beginning to show! - pdawg90, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13What an insightful response, especially since we're talking sales here.
- bobbles, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@HolyChimp
I know people who bought the PSone and PStwo (myself included for PStwo) But I dont know any of those people that bought one simply to replace the old model on their shelf for regular usage. They were either new pieces of equipment, or replacing one of the older models that had broken (Big PS2).
With the DS Lite, many people with the old model in fully funcitoning order, are buying the new one *as well as* their old one, and either trying to sell the old one off, or giving it away to people. I myself bought a DS Lite as a first go, I never was even interesting in the old model, but the Lite was much more appealing to me.
It seems nintendo has covered both the existing market and the new market.. which is pretty impressive. - Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Glad to see you contributing to the discussion... If you don't like a digg story then don't comment in it with useless crap.
- Daedalus81, on 10/12/2007, -8/+14**So umm...like I have done before let me juxtapose your arguement to see if it sounds good from the other side...
Remember this isn't my argument. **
PSP games are the same crap they have always been. I.E. GTA. Kill people. kill more people, steal cars, kill police, kill SWAT, kill FBI, kill ARMY, get a job, get a pension, die old...(the last ones are very unlikely, as Nintendo does not know how to kill a person off...)
(PSP is great handheld, with lots of homebrews available for it, it is a hacker's dream; to make some homebrew, hacking it. To this date I have never seen a DS homebrew, and to be honest, i don't think i ever will...)
**I don't need to modify this above statement. DS homebrews exist, but you didn't bother to want to know about them.**
There are sorts of comments on digg bad-mouthing DS games and how there isn't any good games. At this point I would like to disagree with you, because there are many good games for the DS, such as:
Brain Age series, Tetris remake, New Super Mario Bros, Mario Kart, Lost Magic, Castlevania, Meteos, Mario & Luigi : Partners in Time
PSP Games:
Lumines - are you kidding? Its Tetris!
GTA - Hey i've played this game before too!
SOCOM - Hey this seems familiar!
Tomb Raider - Wow! Deja Vu!
In short, the DS is for everyone, apart from people that love GTA and other ports of PS2 games...
i know I will be digged down, but I will be glad, this way more people will read it...
A BIG HINT FOR PEOPLE - if you're going to down digg a person's comment, it will only make sure that the person's comment is read because it will take a reader's interests ' I wonder what that guy said to get minus 45 diggs'
see you later Sony Fanboys...
**There... all done...** - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10The guy doesn't actually specifically source any of his individual numbers. He just has a list of where he supposedly gets his info.
- nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7What the hell is wrong with some of you people? Some of these comments are straight up lies...
A) These are JAPANESE sales figures, thus, THE DS LITE IS NOT NEW THERE. So it's not a new handheld outselling an old one, and you definitly can't say the DS Lite is a gen above the PSP, that'd be like saying the PSTwo is next-gen compared to the Xbox. The article's comparison is valid, especially since it doesn't always work out that newer sells best. The GBA SP still outsells the Micro, and pretty much EVERYTHING outsells the 360 in Japan, so that logic just doesn't hold up, especially months after a systems release (and yes, it's been months since the DS Lite launched there, AND IT'S NOT A COMPLETELY NEW SYSTEM).
B) The DS as it currently stands has outsold the PSP worldwide, and not by a small margin either. In America, it's kinda close, but the DS is still a good bit ahead in terms of sales. If you read somewhere otherwise, they're either lying or talking in terms of units SHIPPED. Sony LOVES to tell you how many they've SHIPPED, but shipped does not equal sold.
C) Do you HONESTLY have trouble believing the DS is outselling the PSP at this point, especially in Japan? Even if YOU think the PSP is better than the DS, you can't deny simple facts. This article just says that 90% of Japan disagrees with you. Deal with it. - Daedalus81, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10We can take criticism, but we hate *****. I also like actual numbers, long walks on the beach, and pizza.
Edit :
Oh ho! Looks like someone changed their comment. =( - SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -9/+15Don't be retarded. Both are current gen handhelds. No one's comparing a 2006 system to a 1995 system. This isn't DS sales vs. Playstation sales. It's not apples and oranges, it's straight comparison.
- SniperSlap, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9Sony always has a steady supply of 3rd party puke to bolster numbers and go with paper-friendly terms like "units shipped". If they're trying to use deceptive advertising, they're trying to hide something. Plain and simple.
I owned neither a PSP or regular (or blue!!) DS. I just got my DS Lite this weekend and I'm utterly floored. As a PC gamer on the out, the level of integration Nintendo promises is more appealing than a GPU that can wear a schoolgirl outfit and giggle as I look up her skirt while she does cartwheels. I wanted mobility and quality - I got it.
The PSP? Garbage. Why? Sony. If that word doesn't become synonymous with customer neglect and abuse I will eat my own ear. This means that it will break and their phone reps are authorized to laugh at you because they aren't actually phone reps but a legion of ignored e-mail inboxes. This means that they won't put a single shred of effort into developing or standardizing with 3rd parties a console-wide offering to appeal gamers to their platform. This means that Sony will do everything in their power to put content rights in your brain without giving you a single game.
If that isn't enough, search for reviews akin to "where is PSP now". A close friend of mine purchased a PSP a while back and has concluded that he uses it for little more than watching movies on planes. These movies are - yeap - pirated. He conceeds that realistically, the PSP is no gaming platform. As his plane-going is coming to an end, his PSP will probably find it's way to the side of a table to collect dust.
We aren't Sony's customers. The companies and groups they sell the promise of DRM to are. We are Sony's platform.
Before all you Sonytards reach for the negadigg button there, think long and hard about how much you paid versus how much you're getting. Read the next paragraph and pay special attention to the term "big boy". Did your PSP get you laid? Because that's the only reason why people buy that elongated black rock. Watch out, your dick is shrinking Sony fans.
A week before getting my DS Lite, a coworker was gaga for PSP, citing all the bigboy appeal. I too am a big boy, but with a big brain as well (that was NOT a reference to the game "BBA"). Monday after June 11th and no doubt stoked with his own research, he's thinking DS. After seeing mine? I don't think it's a question anymore.
Does any of this speak to Nintendo's future performance? No. That is yet to be seen. But for a few games and the backwards compatible selection of two systems (GBA on DS and GameCube on Wii), I'll buy into Nintendo's current offerings. All in the hopes that enough people will move to the system to influence quality game makers to step up the big boy titles. Would I switch to Nintendo because they are TECHNICALLY superior?
No.
I would switch because they are one platform and my soon to be Wii won't break on me half a year in with no sign of support available...
Sony sucks. - HolyChimp, on 10/12/2007, -11/+17And Sony didn't do this with the PSone and the slimline PS2?
- Mudhoney, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5PSP needs to stop being an expensive PS1/PS2 with some extras and get some more original games. DS is fantastic because it demands originality, and for the most part the games use the unique features in very interesting ways. I also love being able to play multiplayer wireless games with only one of my friends actually owning the game.
- Murdats, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8did anyone think that the reason the psp might have sold so well in america is because you all arent too bright and buy what you are told to?
need I mention products such as AOL? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -15/+20of course it will, it's a new product with a new hot game out. if the redesigned the PSP and launched it with a new GTA then it will see a nice sales spike as well. The point is, the PSP is not having it's ass handed to them like people are trying to get us to believe. I think it's doing quite well considering the fact that this is sony's first venture into the handheld gaming world (where nintendo has DOMINATED with the gb and gba) and they are really sucking in Japan.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8NDS Lite came out June 11th. Lets get the sales figures when mid August rolls around.
- comradechimp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yeah, this is ridiculous. The guy has a point - it's hardly surprising a brand new product in its first week outsells a year old product. That doesn't prove anything about the relative merits of the consoles or their market penetration. More useful would be a comparison of the DS Lite's launch week with the PSPs launch week (probably the DS Lite would still win, just not by such a margin).
I'm certainly not trying to defend Sony in any way by the way, I'm seriously considering getting a DS Lite but I wouldn't give you the steam off my piss for a PSP. - wiu_life, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8This is a blog, where's the actualy numbers ? Is there a real link instead of pointing to the op's blog?
- TubaFrog, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8At least Nintendo fanboys and Sony fanboys can both agree that Halo blows.
- Daedalus81, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11@ Ogmo
I have no reason to mod you down, but to point out a couple items...
The DS has a suspend function as well. And exactly what games for the PSP? Not long ago I saw a video of the Gamespot employees and what they are using doing with their PSP. The large response was watching movies, because there aren't many good games out except Luminous.
Also if you think a simple reboot of the OS is bad then please explain some of the quirks of the PSP that you omitted.
Besides...I welcome competition in the marketplace. - Darren07, on 10/12/2007, -7/+12They didn't flop, but didn't succeed either. Nintendo were the only ones that profitted from their current gen console
- kokuou, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Wow, that's real mature.
Now, stop raping the enter button on your keyboard. - idmclaren, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11There's lots of homebrew for the DS. You are talking out of your ass. That's all I have to say about that.
- buddyglass, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I don't like loading times on my portable systems. With the DS you are playing in less that 5 secs.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10It's like a mountain of stupid, with a creature made out of pure dumbness keeping watch on its peak.
- ywwg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6People submitting this kind of story should be required to put "IN JAPAN" in bigass letters in the headline. I could tell you how much more lenovo sells computers than anyone else.... IN CHINA, but it's not very interesting to the US audience.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6@ Hypertime
Aren't you also the same guy who replied to another poster with "shut it fatso"? - Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11Sour grapes is awfully painful to witness, isn't it?
