- kewldude606, on 10/12/2007, -15/+63No, it wouldn't be horrific. You bought the game because it was worth it for the amount you paid. So now, if you do happen to get a new system, there are just more features. Absolutely no cons.
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -2/+34On the DS, he says "Yahoo!" and on the DS Lite he says "Here We Go!"
Aside from the fact that this is utterly trivial, it could easily be explained by other things that are different in the DS Lite, like a different footprint in the RAM or maybe the game basing the intro on a random number generated from the DS built-in OS' version number or the hardware's serial number. Whichever way, they can't package new content into hardware - it would have to be either downloadable or built into the cart. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+34@KaneDragon
I think you need to look up the term "Easter egg". It's not an "unlockable feature", or something that has any significance. It's just a fun thing they threw in. - ModernTenshi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+27It's also a Nintendo game. It could be that since they already had plans to release the DS lite, they programmed this into the game as an easter egg of sorts.
I dunno, just my thought on the matter. If it only happens with games involving Nintendo franchises, then it's highly probable. If it happens in games that aren't Nintendo franchises, well, your guess is as good as mine. - nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -1/+17Does anyone remember the special ring you got in Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons if you played the game in a GBA instead of a GBC?
- Apocalyps3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13If you keep reading the comments on this story on their site they find out that it's just a random occurrence, one guy states that if he turns on his ds it says "yahoo!" and then when he turns it off and back on it says, "Here we go!" at random times.
- LtDyson52, on 10/12/2007, -4/+16Awesome, just bought a DS lite at Best Buy, and printed out a coupon for a free Brain Age to go along w/ it http://images.bestbuy.com/BestBuy_US/en_US/images/musicmoviegame/videogames/features/isc_060611_dslite.pdf
- breego, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10@KaneDragon
If you don't care about the DS why did you even bother looking at this page. - Tanpreet, on 10/12/2007, -4/+13maybe its just congratulating you on ur purchase of a DS Lite.
- DarkJC, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8"Did you even read the article, your changing his words read it again, he said 'Armed with my Phat DS and DS lite, I booted MKDS with both portables. On the original DS, Mario welcomed me with “Yahoo!” and some engine sounds, as usual. But on the DS lite, Mario changes his greeting to a familiar “Here we go!”'
Dont make stupid comments that are irrelevent"
Um, he said from the articles COMMENTS, not the article itself. Maybe you should learn to read. - dualscreenman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8The different exclamation is also present in pirated ROMs and hacked ROMs. The sound is most likely caused by not being booted the way it thinks it should be. (It does this in the DS Lite perhaps because of a slightly different booting method or slightly different hardware.)
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Yeah, that was so frustrating.... until I got a GBA ;)
- devindotcom, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Good calls, modern and dual. I think it helps to remember this is NINTENDO we're talking about, not Microsoft or Sony - Nintendo gets the benefit of the doubt when it comes to this kind of thing, unlike its competitors, since Nintendo rarely abuses its customers.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4This is expected. I mean, it's not like the DS Lite is new news. They've had the DS Lite planned since WAY before Mario Kart came out on the DS. I'm sure there's plenty of games that take advantage of new hardware.
- evolseven, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4you know i think my red ds does this as well.. where as my wife's blue ds does the yahoo.. i know that the red ds has the new firmware on it compared to the blue.. so maybe its just certain firmware revisions.
- drakonite, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5The same could be done with the gameboy, and I do not remember any horrific things happening with games hiding tons of special content for different hardware.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10You think it would be "horrific" to get new features out of older games simply by getting a DS Lite (which many people, including owners of the old DS, are doing anyway)? I think it would be extremely cool and could invigorate older games that I've already beaten and don't play as much anymore.
Either way, the DS Lite still rules and this is an interesting video proving that there ARE some actual differences seen when playing games on the DS Lite. - Foo667, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Sonic & Knuckles went as far as having a cartridge slot on the top of the game which you could use to enable some extra content, if you owned other sonic games.
This doesn't seem so different. Tis pretty cool. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5That wasn't even remotely clever. This is something interesting. It's fun to know that Nintendo's planting easter eggs in their new systems.
- TheManiacKY, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I noticed when playing Tetris DS in single player mode there is more graphic effects like little fireworks effects or the large icon figure is spinning in more animations then in the normal DS. I checked this by starting up my old DS and seen that these effects was no seen. At first when I seen it on the lite I was like "Wow this screen is so much nicer I'm seeing effects that wasn't noticeable before. But this is different. The more it happened the more I noticed it missing on the older DS. I wonder if the developer tools for the DS allow for features that are included in the newer video graphics? But if this was true one would think Nintendo would advertise it to help sell models.
P.S. on the Mario Kart "Yahoo!" and on the DS Lite he says "Here We Go!" part. The same was true with the older DS with the Japanese model. It would state "Here we go". So I don't know if the DS Lite is more comparable to the Japanese model or what to cause this but thats the reason for the new words. - suqur, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I just tried it on my blue DS and the Lite. It played Yahoo! on both for me.
- Mr.Chainsaw, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3yah. just bought the ds about.... 15 mins ago. tried it. its true. all of you negative douchebags can rot in hell.
- Dmatias, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I appoligize imdwalrus and Dark JC "Um, he said from the articles COMMENTS, not the article itself. Maybe you should learn to read"
I was looking at the dugg mirror because it was not loading on my computer and it only had 5 comments.
I assumed that he made a mistake. - ph3rny, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I heard it was something with the firmware versions
- masamunecyrus, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Anyone else notice that on the menu in the DSlite where you select which screen you want GBA games to play on, it's still a picture of a fat DS?
Laziness.. - atomysk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, whoever submitted this story should have read the user comments on the page before thinking this was actually true. This "theory" was debunked I assume within hours of its posting. People sure are digging deep for stories to throw on here.
Marked as inaccurate. - nmaster64, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just tried this, and it works! Definitly interesting, I wonder if Nintendo plans to do anything with it...
- mgainor, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3When was it a story in the first place?
- ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I noticed that too. Firmware update time! :P
- otatop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My red DS has firmware 4 and starts up with a "Yahoo".
:( - lucask, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah for real, and what would the difference be from Gameboy color assigning color schemes to old gameboy games? Pop in a Classic Zelda and a Classic Tetris and the scheme isn't the same; same idea.
- Mexrocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1he says something similar in Super Mario 64 DS
- drwiii, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'd always thought that the sound changed based on your savegame/WFC status. Unconfigured (the first time you start the game), Configured (data is saved, serial number matches, WFC OK), or Invalid (data is saved, serial number mismatch, WFC invalid).
It does that when you shove a configured MKDS cart into any other DS, regardless of version. - ipodman715, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Here's a direct link to the video (XviD): http://lm2005.googlepages.com/mkdslite.avi
- levyjl1988, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I remember that! I have the game, yup it's the firmware
- bryant, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1That happens in basically all the games with mario for the DS.
Mario 64, MKDS, NSMB, etc. - bloodwings, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1http://www.zelda.com/seasons/ this was a game boy color game that had a special store available only if you played it later on game boy advanced. same thing.
- imdwalrus, on 10/12/2007, -13/+13Taken from the article's comments...
"On my “phat DS” I turn it on and hear the “yahoo!”. Then I turn it off and restart it and hear the “Here we go!”.
So your theory sucks. It’s just random."
If that's the case, then this is a nonstory. - Dmatias, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I just got the ds today and in the new super mario bros when you close it MArio says "goodbye" and when you open it he says "its a me mario" is the on the lite only or is it on both systems. (Ive never played the ds before and im just curious)
- harley999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1This actually does not have to be in the game software does it? Can't the ds lite detect what game its playing, and for certain games change simple things?
- nights0223, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1That happens with both systems.
- aggies11, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2If DSFirmwareNumber == ORIGINAL
then print: Yahoo!
else if DSFirmwareNumber !== ORIGINAL // (Anything else)
then print: Lets Go!
end if - GolfDude, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2its not a random deal.. if its random, then why doesnt it do it on all ds's? that guy needs to recheck his own ds..
- NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Ok this story is really lame.
- heavyness, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1i wonder how long until some hacks the DS phat to get it to be recognized as a DS lite. all for a different phrase Mario says during boot time.
lets all over react to this news! waaaaaa! - BGOATdoughnut, on 10/12/2007, -9/+4I do! :D
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1I wonder what the age is of users on Digg...you guys all sound like 12-13
- siouxmoux, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2 on the DS lite, Mario changes his greeting to a familiar “Here we go!”. But It that phase should be spelled out “Here wii go!"
- Pacotheparrot, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Only Nintendo ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -16/+6So I guess when the rumors started circulating about Nintendo possibly releasing a re-designed DS and Nintendo claiming that the rumors were "absolutely false", they had already created a game about a year before that knew it would happen. Lying through their ***** teeth a la Sony!
