- sensor, on 10/12/2007, -12/+30Like they said it won't be the same game as in PC... so the graphics will be changed ... huge load times (like in Oblivion) and so on. PC > consoles in huge enviroments.
- shad0w, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16I did some googling, and I thought I'd throw out this 1UP article from August:
"...'Xbox360 cannot run DX10, and confirmed what I said earlier about the extended functionality. The Xbox360 has unique features including memory export that can enable DX10-class functionality such as stream-out,' said an ATI spokesperson. 'From what we're hearing, Crysis will support DX9 with some sort of use for DX10 features. It's likely that those DX10 visuals can be replicated on the Xbox360, but it can't be properly called DX10.'
There's no reason Crysis can't appear on Xbox 360 (even Crytek themselves have discussed the possibility, even if it's not in production just yet); all of its public appearances have been running on DirectX 9. With a little bit of optimization, a console port seems in reach."
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3153097 - AkatsukiNoTobi, on 10/12/2007, -7/+21I'm hoping Crysis is released for the 360 so that other people can experience this awesome game without having to sacrifice an arm for hardware upgrades.
- Brickhaus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+19Of course they're going to come out with a game called Crysis for the 360 and the PS3, but will it have all the bells and whistles of the pc version, no.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13i'm guess you never played Far Cry multiplayer, boring, generic deathmatch
- autocrawler, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13Judging by how Far Cry PC differs from the console ports, I am glad that Crysis isn't being developed as a cross-platform title from the ground up.
In other words, the PC gamers will be getting the real deal, not the dumbed down rail shooter thingy like Far Cry Instincts.
"I'm hoping Crysis is released for the 360 so that other people can experience this awesome game without having to sacrifice an arm for hardware upgrades."
IMHO, every platform, including the PC needs exclusives to remain strong. This game being PC exclusive would probably drive more people to upgrade their PCs, leading to a small, but still much needed boost for PC gaming, which isn't exactly doing as well as console gaming. - TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -2/+12@shad0w, yeah I was right, it does support some DX10 features, not sure why I was dugg down for saying that?
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@Ignignokt01
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe motion blur is a Shader Model (Shader Model 3.0 and up) thing, not a DirectX 10 thing. I remember having motion blur in Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six: Vegas on the PC, and that runs on DirectX 9. - quaunaut, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11And this is a problem how?
- altosaxon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@ iZealot... I dugg you down because you said irregardless
- jmzook, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7For those of you who have a faulty definition of blog-spam, this is what that phrase actually means. When someone links to their site, which contains a link to the actual story, that is blog-spam, and it sucks. No digg from me.
- Hatefull, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7hey sensor, I don't think using Oblivion is the best example, Bethesda seems to be more of a game company that focuses on the game/story than the tech, while the guys at Crysis seem to be the other way around, if that makes any sense, or maybe I'm just letting my optimism cloud my thoughts because I want to play this game but don't have the pc rig to do so.
- JayD16, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Oh thank god, I was afraid the 360 would never get a first person shooter....
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5That's like saying: 'No matter how amazing the graphics and physics are in Half life 2, its still just Half life 2.0. wait...'
- Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7It won't have Directx 10 capabilities, such as motion blur, and a lot of the amazing physics. In short, it will be somewhat watered down, but it should still be a great game for the console. Considering directx10 compatible video cards cost up from like 500 dollars, I'll gladly wait to play the Vista version.
- randomvictim, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I hate podcasts. I can read so much faster than these people can talk.
- NanoStuff, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I'm hoping the game gets released on the 360 just so people can see why they should have bought the PC version instead.
- scabbers, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9It remains to be seen if the game is actually awesome, anyway. It LOOKS amazing... but the last gameplay video was more than a little: "wtf?"
- LilRabbitFooFoo, on 08/11/2008, -5/+8Can we just have text we can read? Is it too much to ask that we don't have to listen to some amateur hour "podcaster" for our information? I can read faster than these wanna'bes can speak and I'm damn sure my internal monologue is more professional.
- NiroZ, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3@iZealot
You only have to pay that if you wish to play the latest and greatest at max settings. - xXShadowstormXx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4By the way, direct link: http://www.crysis-online-files-4.com/media/1UP%20Podcast%20on%20Crysis%20for%20the%20Xbox360.mp3
- nc454, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Shouldn't the focus be placed on game play and originality? Instead of making the same game look better each year, why not make something different and original.
- Sutanreyu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Most of what has been shown up until a couple months ago, (go find some old videos), was footage of it being run in DX9 mode. So no, Crysis is not incredibly reliant on DX10.
- Jonathan1081, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2First of all that article is complete rubbish. It is going by an off hand comment by a low level employee stating that if it came to the console this is how they would do it. As Cevat Yerli CEO and president of CryTek has said on many of occasions. Crysis-online.com has alot of stuff, mainly some good videos/hi res pictures, but is not to be taken seriously on every piece of material they post. It's basically a devoted fan posting general stuff from around they web (ala digg) on the site for easy access for fans of Crysis or CryTek to see.
Second thing is at E3 Crysis was not reliant on DX10, as it was running in DX9 so of course at the time we all saw Crysis in DX9. However the game now as we just saw it at CES in pre alpha ( according to Jack Mamais Lead Level Designer, and Cevt Yerli ) and will hit the alpha stage in March. Is Very reliant on DX10, as it takes 100% advantage of geometry shaders only found in DX10. Because of those geometry shaders they can incorporate there volumetric lighting that is so important to the realistic lighting that bounces off everything and gives the world a real look. Plus aside from the lighting, geometry shaders makes for much more real shadows, as they will be softer, refract multiple light sources and colors, and is also a feature of there hemoglobin-melonin shaders found in there face shading technology of CryEngine 2. Also in the one of......... hell 20+ CES demos you can find. You will see how far the game has come along since E3 eight months ago and look worlds better and rest assured in the next 6 to 7 months before the final release of Crysis it will have a little more polish to it ( not much mind you as once the game hits alpha it will be pretty much done level wise and that obviously includes most textures for the levels and such ) and Vista and a DX10 8800GTX/GTS or the soon to be released R600 by AMD/ATI ( in March ) will be where they game will truly shine.
Finally, Crysis is never, I repeat NEVER coming out for consoles. At least not called Crysis. They may name it some form or the other with Crysis in the name ....... or even be named Crysis but it will by no means be the same game, hell it won't even be a watered down port. It will be what Cevat Yerli has said if they every got drunk enough to make a console verion, a completely different game set in they Crysis universe. It goes back to an old interview with Cevat at last years E3. Saying that they originally started to make Crysis for the PS3 and XBOX 360, but when they started to have to turn down stuff and could not do what they wanted with the game they scraped it and focused on a PC version only. Cevat saying shortly after what I just paraphrased " Crysis's graphics, A.I., and complexity of gameplay are only possible on PC" and then when on to say that they will not be making a console version because 1, it can't do it and 2, they want to show every one that PC are the epitome of Next-Gen because PC's are always moving forward and once a console comes out thats what you get for five or six years. They interview I'm referring to can be found here at incrysis.com and is the game horizon interview 3/4 down the page under the downloads section on the right.
All that minutia said, DX9 to DX10 will be rather significant maybe even more so than the jump from DX8.1 to DX9. You can assure yourself that while Crysis is using almost every feature in DX10 right now. it is IMO going to be the only DX10 game out this year that really does anything with it. Flight Sim 10 and Hellgate London aren't really doing much at all, and HGL, while it might be a good game looks like utter bollix. We have to remember that parallax mapping wasn't even used in DX9 until a year ago and it was there for about five years in DX9, so while there will be games in a year or two that use more of DX10 or know how to use it better, that does not make Crysis any less DX10 or not really DX10 because it's the first. It's especially not as that one dolt put it "it's DX9 using DX10 effects on some stuff" that is hardly the case. Yes it supports DX9 as was started on DX9, and most people when it comes out will play it on DX9 but the majority of the stuff you see from here on out is only possible on a DX10/Vista machine. - halosniper7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2isnt the 360 running directX9?
- shrewduser, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6ps3 is opengl..... only microsoft stuff is directX
not that openGL couldn't do the stuff shown in those crysis videos... its just they probably wont bother porting it. - reticulate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2PD0 is a launch title, and has similar motion blur to Crysis when you turn around quickly and such.
It doesn't have the full feature-set, but developers can do some funky stuff with the architecture. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3As much as it would be awesome to have it come for PS3 or Xbox360 im pretty sure it wont happen.
- Sutanreyu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Have you seen any of the gameplay videos?
If you have, then you'll see it's no Far Cry dupe w/ better graphics. Their only similaries are that they both take place in a tropical island and that they're both FPS's. The likenesses end there. - japface, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2dx10 and dx9 aren't that different in terms of what they offer in effects and what not. think of dx10 as having the same feature set as dx9, just be a hell of a lot faster due to the lack of legacy code. so i'm assuming a lot of the ***** they have in crysis can be done on the 360, just textures, maybe motion blur, and how they render large spaces would have to change, but the game could quite possibly look pretty close to the same.
- spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yeah, like the CEO knows anything about future projects.
...Wait... - diggn_it, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Oh, Im glad you work for crytek or 1up and so can speak with absolute certainty about this game that had not been released yet on either platform. Wait, what? You dont work for either company and are just speculating wildly? Oh, too bad.
I love how all the PC gamer fanboys here are declaring that the 360 version WILL OBVIOUSLY be much worse and watered down. How do you know? If you actually listed to the podcast and looked into this, you'd know that 1UP had already said the 360 can emulate nearly all the direct x10 features for this game, and oblivion wasnt watered down at all.
Lets wait a bit and stop pretending like anybody here knows what their talking about. - kryptobs2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2your so right, cause it defiantly will not run on DX9 cards that are currently out now.
/sarcasm - Sutanreyu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3The 1UP podcast is completely wrong. Cevat Yerli has said time and time again that there will be no Crysis for the consoles. This podcast is pretty much the response to what they've seen in CES this year, and throughout, no plans, no talk, and no hints pointed to, "No Crysis for the consoles".
They don't even mention as to where they were told this information.
I'm almost 100% sure that they're just ASSUMING a console port. - Agret, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I heard word that Crysis was going to have class based multiplayer, even if it doesn't i'm sure with sweet GFX like that some'll make up a mod for it.
Provided the SDK doesn't suck as much as Far Crys one that is. - shad0w, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Actually, I think this is a 1UP podcast, which makes it relatively professional. At least the people hosting it are getting paid to do what they do. It's still frustrating to have not have an article that summarizes though.
- SnowFire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3You know its nice to see how Graphics advance in the PC side as they are the spearhead for these new technologies, however, and I don't want to start a flamewar over this, I think the Wii proved that graphics aren't the "be-all" solution to gaming. As technologically ambitious as Crysis might be I finished the first Far Cry, but at the end of the day it wasn't that memorable a gaming experience as more gameplay developed games like Half-Life 2.
And you have to give credit where credit is due, the Xbox 360 has Gears of War which does have spectacular looking graphics for a 400 dollar piece of hardware.
Gaming I think is all about having your little niche. But in the end it all comes down to economics. If a game like Crysis will push for better, high end hardware to make its way into PCs I say that's fine.
DirectX 10 aside, which John Carmack has stated is locked to Windows Vista by artificial means we are only but seeing the second generation games come out for the current generation of consoles, and you can't underestimate them either (again look at Gears of War) When Doom 3 came out for the original Xbox running without slowdown, for a second, you could have sworn a simple console was "getting there" as far as the graphics department went. Even if it was only a "DirectX 8.5" of sorts.
And Carmack did state that the original Xbox could do some things better than that current generation of video cards. Even for an underpowered home console. So we haven't really seen what the current crop of consoles can do in the graphics department (I believe the Wii is excused in that department for obvious reasons). And these things aren't usually seen untill the end of life of the machines themselves. - SpoBo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1DirectX is a library for developers so they don't have to code the complex stuff themselves and so that games can use common code. It's a sort of library. Anyway, dx9 hardware can easily run dx10 effects. It just won't be natively and it'll take some extra effort. But it's doable.
I'm hoping it'll get released somewhere next year since I'm not planning on buying a new desktop ever again. - kryptobs2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I had more fun with FarCry than with any other fps I've played. I beat that game probably 5 times it was so fun and different everytime which I have a hard time saying about most. HL2, great game, but I beat it once and had no desire to play it again. I don't see what people have against FarCry.
- kryptobs2000, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Don't state facts, we digg you down here for such blasphemy
- kryptobs2000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3@ diggin:
I'm sure some exist but I can't think of a single title ever that was not watered down when being ported from pc to consoles unless it was years after the pc release. I'm all for it being released on the 360, I have nothing against it, but I can assure you it will be watered down. It's going to run slow on high end pc's most likely, so if it's then ported to a slower console that will emulate dx10 features as you put it, it's not gonna work. They will have to dumb some things down. - testdrivemedia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah? Because the xbox 360 core system is listed as $1000? Righto dick weed.
- kryptobs2000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3pc's really don't cost much more than a console considering. Most people are going to have a pc anyways, so with any modern pc all you need to do is buy a videocard. You can get a very capable card for 200$. I normally only buy a new videocard every year to year and a half, and yeah I may be spending 200-300 on a new one, but I sell the old one which recoupes at least half the cost.
If you don't own a pc or just web surf on an old P3 or something then yeah it's expensive but most people I know whether they play pc games or not could spend 200$ and have a fine gaming pc. People really blow this out of proportion just cause they have no idea what they're talking about. - gwolf, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Well it won't come to PS3 anyway, too much work and not enough financial incentive to do it.

please read my comment all the way through before you reply - reticulate, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2"People really blow this out of proportion just cause they have no idea what they're talking about."
Absolutely. Buy more RAM, and a better Video Card, and you've just added another year and a half to the life of your PC. Whole system upgrades aren't as important anymore when the vast majority of titles are GPU-limited. - TonyCubed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess the real question is: Can the same effects be ported to OpenGL easily?
