- saddino, on 06/18/2008, -2/+16Article's wrong about Atari 2600: the godawful Pac-Man and E.T. games were both official Atari licensed games -- not third-party games. Third-party games definitely had a major role in the 2600's downfall, but crappy games from Atari also are to blame.
- bossm4n, on 06/18/2008, -0/+13I played on almost every one of those consoles when they were new and I'm no grandfather, at least I'm not aware of any grandchildren. In fact I still have my original 2600. Quit making me feel old dammit. Now where'd I put my Metamucil?
- Spuff, on 06/18/2008, -1/+13Atari was amazing.
- SocialPoison, on 06/18/2008, -0/+11What are you, nine?
- SkippyDoorknob, on 06/18/2008, -0/+11Get off my lawn!!!
- SocialPoison, on 06/18/2008, -0/+8That'd be devastating for the soap industry.
- Someguy101, on 02/19/2009, -0/+8like your mom?
- inactive, on 06/18/2008, -1/+8Leslie Werner.
She had an Atari Pong so I was obligated to be her boyfriend. Bonus points due to the fact that she was sexually active. - xtremepizan, on 06/18/2008, -6/+13***** the 70's. If it weren't for the 70's, it'd still be the 60's
- pooroldluser, on 06/18/2008, -0/+6I remember as a kid my first crushing video game disappointment in the form of Pac Man on the Atari 2600. I actually lost sleep the night before I got it in expectation of playing Pac Man for free, any time I wanted, in my own home. Unfortunately, what I booted up (after what was possibly the loooongest day of my elementary school career) was an abomination that made a mockery of my dreams.
Thankfully, I had more than a few awesome memories with the blocky graphic goodness of my Atari that it launched me into a lifelong addiction.
Now I totally want a black and woodgrain casemod for my Wii. - JonTheGoose, on 06/18/2008, -0/+5Bring back wood paneling!!!
- JonTheGoose, on 06/18/2008, -1/+6But if not for the 70's then there wouldn't have been the 80's and you can't deny that the 80's totally rocked.
- jakejeffries, on 06/18/2008, -0/+5Shouldn't Intellivision be on here or am I in the 80's?
- mparker7410, on 06/18/2008, -0/+4I'd like to see a case mode of a Wii or XBox to resemble a console released in 1970's, the look of matte black and wood is so nice.
- PhillyMJS, on 06/19/2008, -0/+4Ahhh, the 70s... get a load of the light gun that came with some of those Coleco Telstars. No day-glo orange in sight!
/me misses the wildly unsafe toys of his youth. - deanoplex, on 06/18/2008, -0/+4My PONG (1975) still works. : )
- billizm, on 06/18/2008, -1/+5The Nintendo Wii is the first console I have actually owned. I have been a PC gamer since my Atari 800XL computer back in 1985. 8KB or RAM baby, mewow!
- doctechnical, on 06/18/2008, -1/+5The Fairchild Channel F had a fantastic controller. Think joystick that you could twist left and right, push down and pull up. Neat.
/remembers when "burn in" was an issue with video games - replikhant, on 06/18/2008, -0/+4wow. This has been a nostalgic trip.
There was this game in the TRS 80, Dungeons of Daggorath, which was fantastic. Sadly I never got to finish it and that failure haunts me to these days. - FaithclubDotNet, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3Atari 2600 was fun for its time, especially compared to pong. Ti-99 is where I learned to program basic.
- doublsh0t, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3I just checked cause I was curious too--it was released by Mattel in 1979 though it was only released nationwide in 1980...either way it's debatable
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intellivision - BoneheadFarker, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3Man...I never realised how much Coleco really sucked in those days. I'm glad I only discovered them in the 80's...
- thirdeyeopen666, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3Doesn't say anything about Mario in HD. Says Mario on 'our HDTVs.'
- SkippyDoorknob, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3The Atari 800XL had 64k of RAM
- deanoplex, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3Yeah! I burned my dads TV!
- azimir, on 06/19/2008, -0/+3The best part about today is that yesterday is for sale on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Radio-Shack-TRS-80-Model-100-P ...
http://cgi.ebay.com/TRS-80-Tandy-Color-Computer-Du ...
For a mere $150 (give or take), you can lift that mental failure from your brow and become the person you could have been! - SkippyDoorknob, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3The 800XL is not the same as the 800. The 800XL came out many years later and always had 64k.
- 1807, on 06/18/2008, -1/+4and I use a component cable for my Wii and it's out putting 480p which, is technically HD. Besides you know what? even 1080p isn't truly HD.
- SkippyDoorknob, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3I'm not sure what definition you are using, but it's not the same one the TV industry uses.
720p, 1080i, and 1080p are all considered HD.
480p is ED not HD - kevro, on 06/18/2008, -0/+3your right 1979. there was also the trs-80 in 1977
- caddyalan, on 06/18/2008, -2/+4Thanks to an independent video game retailer, I saw several vintage systems for sale. It was nice to see some are in working condition -- which is more than I can say for many original NES systems.
While I admit I only have a little experience with pre-8-bit games, I played and enjoyed several console games from before '85. - MattB123, on 06/20/2008, -0/+2I got a 2600 as a gift from a family friend (to the horror of my parents). It was the best ever. Tank, Asteroids, the driving game, and Space Invaders were pretty mind blowing at the time. The same friend got us Pac Man when it came out and it came with a free t-shirt. The shirt was pure 1981 4th grade bling. I'm pretty sure that was the pinnacle of my coolness.
That was also the last console I ever owned. Have they changed much? - dagooh, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2What? I've seen plenty of NES consoles in working condition with absolutely 0 maintenance.
- wilf_brim, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2Some were bad, but Activision made some of the best later games. Think Pitfall:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitfall%21 - inactive, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2I bought one off ebay for $20. I wish I still had my Odyssee 4000, it was more fun then more pong. My favorite system though was Vectrex (80s)
- iamnobody8614, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2Magnavox used to be pretty innovative. My grandfather was a PR rep for them back in the day. My dad says he used to bring home cool ***** that the company was working on (like their first go at laser disc players).
- Biks, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2Holy crap, I remember the Mattel Electronics Handheld Games. My mom never bought me one, thus..I had to sit in awe in the lunch room while my friends maneuvered their dot around the other dots in what was called football. Even though I'm getting pwned in Team Fortress 2 by some punk 17 year old, I bet I still can kick his in ass on a pinball machine. :-P
- SyntraFTW, on 06/18/2008, -3/+5There is no Mario in HD.
- PhillyMJS, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2Bite your tongue, sir. Were it not for those Coleco consoles from the 70s we would not have been rockin' the ColecoVision in the 80s!
- TheRunes, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2I miss my old Atari 2600.. I had 50 some odd games. Most of them sucked...
- Andrwmorph, on 06/18/2008, -0/+2They REALLY liked pong back then
- Thundercat1971, on 06/19/2008, -0/+2Ahhhh, the Trash-80. Many hours of 8th grade were spent on one of those suckers. I also remember when every Radio Shack had them prominantly displayed in the store.
- schoate09, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1480p is EDTV, (enhanced definition TV). Not HDTV.
- tobiasproject, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1I still have a Fairchild Channel F!
- adammharvey, on 06/20/2008, -0/+1i feel like old man river right now
- inactive, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1"Nintendo Color TV-Game 6 - Japan
Only a few hundred of these units were ever produced of Nintendo’s first shot at a dedicated game console. The TV Game 6 contained six variations of Pong, with the players controlling their paddles with dials that were attached directly to the machine. *Nintendo was never heard from again* "
I LOL'd - Andres84, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Cool... I got a Mattel Electronics Soccer at home, still works perfectly
- paperthin0, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Dugg for not reading! Seriously, if you look at that sentence (the one a lot of you have trouble comprehending), it says you can play Mario on HDTVs. Yup, it's true! You can. There was no comment about having a high definition Mario game. Internet: everyone can use it!
- HomersHead, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1Yup, all the toy guns from the 70s were gun colored. Sweet!
- djhindsight, on 06/19/2008, -0/+1haha! I'll never forget that sound. The sweet sound of disappointment.
