- CatfishJones, on 10/12/2007, -3/+87Inaccurate. Congress is not banning online gaming, just online gambling. Sure sure, "gaming" is a euphemism for gambling but I'm not a fan of ambiguous (and in this case sensationalized) titles (and descriptions).
"Virtual betting parlors have attempted to avoid the application of United States law by locating themselves offshore and out of our jurisdictional reach," That's what this is about, not WoW. ;) - splinter, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22They just want a cut. Greedy bastards

There should be an "edit" link along the bottom of your submission. - kneelbeforezodd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+13I apologize Catfish - point taken. I am a poker player, first time poster and didn't craft the email subject line to distinguish between Poker and other gaming. I would correct it to say Congress Set to Ban Online Poker....Maybe even use the word attempt - since I don't see how they can do this really.
I still think we let people know about this issue and Seatlle Brad has a better crafted subject line. I personally don't like any attempt by Government to decide what we can do on the internet I just want them to protect it - like passing the Net Neutrality act etc... not tell me what I can do online. FYI- this bill is supported by the Christian coalition etc... - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8protect us congress before we double down again!
- Drahkar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7You should point out that its not Online Gaming that this is geared towards. Its a bill to ban online gambling. Just a tad different.
- goodshape, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@CatfishJones : "That's what this is about, not WoW. ;)"
ha.. I skipped a beat there. That's exactly what I thought it was about :-)
Very misleading title. - Scourge, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Obviously the gambling, you could have bought a new game with that $50!
- warehos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6this headline is misleading.
- afpunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5What a ridiculous bill. Maybe instead of finally making it a clear ban, they could legalize it with a small entertainment tax, encourage gambling sites to move to the U.S., and let American citizens decide which forms of harmless fun they wish to participate in.
And to all you "boohoo its inaccurate no digg reported" idiots, just because you thought the wrong thing when you read the title (as did I) does not make it inaccurate. The gambling industry has been around far longer than the video game industry, and has been referred to as the gaming industry just as long. I'll give you misleading, however. - Sagura, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Whoa!
Your digg title just scared the crap out of me.... - enzomedici, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5
This is not even possible. You can always reach a server outside the US. Congress is acting out of stupidity once again. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I do not think that they should illegalize it, Because honestly, They shouldn't have the power to remove such rights.
If someone wants to squander their money, then let darwin work it out. - CedanticPunt, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8marked as innacurate. I would have chosen 'sensationalistic tabloid lies', but that choice wasn't available to me...
- cmw72, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7You don't think its a bad idea because they're not trying to outlaw something YOU like.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I always find it amusing how the US government thinks they control the 'Internets'.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Gambling, not to be confused with games such as Counter Strike and Everquest.
- cmw72, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I've lost maybe $50 or so to online gambling.
I gave up two solid years of my life to Everquest.
You tell me which one should be outlawed? - golhra, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Meh, this just has to do with Gambling online. Cause of your MISLEADING TITLE, I mistook this for my FPS games.
If it had been online gaming, I would have been at congress screaming "Killing Spree! GOD-LIKE!!!" muhuwa - babylonian, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Goddamn, these superexaggerated titles are getting annoying as hell. Super misleading; no digg.
At least the submitter was honest in specifying in the description that it was only "certain types" of games, but that could've just as easily been put in the actual title. - 10scott10, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3yes however, if they use the term gaming than it can apply to videogames unless there is a clasue specifying gambling.yes however, if they use the term gaming than it can apply to video games unless there is a clause specifying gambling.
- SuperCujo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Hmmm, thinking about it, banning WoW might actually be a good thing. All those nerds forced to go do something else might kick start the economy.
That and WoW sucks... :) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I was quoting President Bush.
- wompwomp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4In related news, Congress just passed a bill that would seek to ban all forms of fun. More details as they arrive.
- jmnormand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ill put 100 on seeing online keno within a year of this bill passing...
- Saintlink, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Follow the money trail, they just want a cut on the action.
- Linkage155, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3There's more than one?
- Cyborg771, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Misleading title. I don't like online gambling anyways so this doesn't effect me.
- TenebrousX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4lol, the title freaked me out
- oneiroi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Leave it to otherland to make something a partisan debate, when that isn't the point.
- markormesher, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2When will they realize that the more laws they pass that do silly things like that, the more and more that the people will get pissed? I mean, half of CEO's probably play poker online... Is it just me thinking that they are nuts? They want to cut taxes on everything else and then get a cut of the money on this... hypocritical politicians.
thx Learn2Govern. - spect3r, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Marked as innacurate.
Anyways. Online gambling is risky anyways.. not sure Id ever try it. Doesn't seem secure.. no matter what or whos behind it. I feel like it's rigged; but that's my personal opinion.
I've heard it's an epedemic in the states - children gambling online (spending mom and dads money) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well you're pretty stupid.
Poker = Game
Poker Online = Online Game - ogletree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I don't think we are far from the government passing laws that US backbone providers have to follow. As in they have to block all online gambling sites or something.
- SweetChuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2kodek
The bill number is HR 3125. - Chas555, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Can you say hypocritical. Its okay for the government to have lotto and to have quickdraw.
It is okay for them to even have commercials to promote it.
But when there is competition or if someone isn’t being taxed, it is wrong.
I only have on thing to say to congress “get a fu*^ing Job” because your not doing what we want. - SuperCujo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Nooooo... We don't want them here in Australia.
Can we do a trade on something else? David Hicks for John Howard? You guys can have the little arse weasel, might get GWs mind off nuking Iran if little Johnny was licking arse. - ikiryou, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2If anyone has the right to crush white people at their own "game", it's the Indians. It's payback for the U.S. government stealing their lands and relegating them to reservations. At any rate, online gambling is equal the poor man's Atari 2600.
- kneelbeforezodd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Hey thanks for the info. However, I can't see the edit button when I go to the link....
- kodek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You know. I'd really like to know what this "bill" is, so people like me could track it to see its outcome. The article doesn't talk about an H.R. anywhere.
- qishi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Neither?
- SweetChuck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2No. I knew right away it was about gambling. But the thing you have to consider is, it's a short step from banning games like Poker to banning games like WoW and other online games that have a real money economy. Don't forget that the IRS clssifies Poker as a skill game, not gambling like slots or the lottery or betting on sports, if someone in the government gets the idea that MMORPGs or FPSs are taxable, or a hinderance to society, they will introduce legeslation against them.
- tobsterius, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Somehow I fail to see how banning online gambling for people within the US could affect others around the world...
- sgtpinky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2In even other news - Americans flood to Europe and Australia...
- ScionX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm 28 & thought the title was misleading.
Not everyone does the online gambling thing or even plays cards at ALL for that matter. So the 1st thing I thought of when I saw "online gaming" was the likes of UT, WoW & such. - Drahknon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why not? Isn't this interstate commerce? Or are you arguing that the measure would be overbroad?
- sam10685, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1if congress could, they'd ban being alive.
- Yankidank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Online gambling, not gaming. Reported as innacurate
- ogletree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The whole argument that the internet is interneational will end of the US government gets control of all the us backbones. There will be ways around it but most people won't be able to do it.
- G20NYK, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I think most of those poker sites are operated offshore because I ***think*** in some places it's illegal.
