- DrGamez, on 10/12/2007, -9/+32So they are going to have Duke Nukem Forever pre-installed on the thing?
- antipro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+18in fact they just released the alpha of Sarcasm 2.0
- ThugEsquire, on 10/12/2007, -7/+18Sure, but the the innovative new forms of gameplay it's going to offer are going to be the PS3's real selling point. Think about it--not just first-person shooters, but third-person shooters as well. And racing games.
Simply revolutionary. - ThugEsquire, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I don't read joystiq.
- Red_Cloak, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11If they took a $300 a unit loss, that would mean 3 billion lost for the first 10 miullion sold.
Sony is about 5 billion away from bankrupcy court. 5 billion US dollars. Google it. This is another one of Sony's shell games.
They never intended to release this thing in Spring 2006, it wasnt going to happen period. Remember, it was sony's CEO who said Killzone was done in realtime. Sony is riding a wave of inflated hype jsut to keep their company afloat. Enron pulled the same tactics aa few years before they went bellyup. - antipro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10the controller
- antipro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8If you want one you're gonna have to preorder before you know what games are gonna be on it.
Same thing happened with the 360. People that got it reserved in May.
But I can guess that there will be a Dynasty Warriors game, a Ridge Racer game, and 12 EA games (8 of which will be Madden). - battosai787, on 10/12/2007, -10/+16well it would be good if ps3 came with a working power supply unlike with some 360 ones when released
- antipro, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9yeah it'll be big.
And it'll look like a George Foreman's Grill from the future - Red_Cloak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8A developer who works for Starbreeze(Chronicles of Riddick, The Darkness) and one who works Monolith(Condemned, FEAR) both stated on the Gaming AGe forums that they know nothing of a required hard drive in the PS3.

Going by SOny's track record of half truths and back peddling, I wouldn't take this bit of PR with a grain of salt. Let's see an actual system with a full featured Blu Ray Drive, built in hard drive and playable games/online service(6 million systems at worldwide november launch?!?!) then we can talk Sony. ;)
At least show us something playable. Enough hype, show your cards Sony, Sprind 2006 is here and all we get are more promises to be broken/streched.
120 fps games in the 4th dimension. Ya, sure..... - wilf_brim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Very interesting, if true. This will make the PS3 a far more useful item, but I'm wonderin what this will do to the cost. They were looking at a $800 cost without the HDD, add another $50-$100 to that for the drive and housing. This thing is either going to be mega expensive, or Sony will be taking a monsterous loss per unit.
- MadMan459, on 10/12/2007, -15/+20And people complain about all the Apple stories on Digg.. sheesh. What's next?
"PS3 to ship with POWER SUPPLY!!!!!!!1!1ONE!!!!!!!"
-digg - Lumiras, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Well, this really shouldn't be a shock to anyone, seeing that Kutaragi's address spelled out that the HDD was needed to play all games. It wasn't like they were going to ship a system that wasn't able to play games.
60GB is a good size to start out with, and the option to upgrade is a definte plus - xodex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Alright! Finally something that Sony did right, I seriously didn't like the decision that Microsoft made with the 360 premium/core ordeal.
More and more PS3 reminds me of the First Xbox. :p - Xipher, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8There's enough series that were on the PS2 that I enjoyed that are going to the PS3, so I figure it will be worth buying for the francises alone. I may still may get a X360, but I'll make that decision once the PS3 is finally out.
- nnonix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4If you don't have high-speed internet, the core is good for you. The HDD is overkill for game saves considering you can put way more than you'll ever use on a memory stick. It's an option that some parents will be happy to have.
- alexkidd, on 10/12/2007, -7/+11who gives a sh*t? PS3 fanboys unite and submit the most ridiculously inconsequential stories ever!
PS3...360, it boils down to one thing. Do you like MGS or Halo? Because everything else (yes even final fantasy eventually) will be cross platform, therby making any graphic prowess either machine may have worthless.
It's common sense folks. - SparQy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yeah, you're right, @alexkidd -- it does boil down to games and franchise properties... which is why I still LOVE nintendo.
- MadMan459, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9@blindirishman - LOL - I can just hear the sales pitch... "Oh sure, you *could* just go with the *stock* power supply, but isn't it worth the extra cost to have a power supply you *know* will work flawlessly, and won't burn your house down?"
LOL at everyone who is -digging our jokes here. Get over it. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6You can divide mainstream gaming today into three areas--Hollywood Crap, Sports Crap, and Tired Shooters. The PS3 will carry on the tradition of sameness that the XBox 360 is currently pioneering. "Wow, sweat shaders on a basketball player model! That's important enough for a commercial!"
- antipro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I'm not talking out of my ass, you are reading out of your ass. When I mentioned the PS2 I was referring to the shortage of units at and around the launch window. I addressed the overheating issue in my next paragraph. Which is to say Im unfamiliar with any overheating issue.
And no I have never heard of the PS2 overheating. There is that disc read error that happens to old systems but thats another problem entirely. - antipro, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5yeah except the same thing happened with the original xbox and the ps2, so it's hard to consider that a problem unique to the 360.
I haven't really heard anything about overheating. I did hear problems about disc scratches when you move this system while its on but thats a problem with most system.
As far as Im concerned the 360 is worth a lot more than were paying for it and I wish I could get a PC with those same specs for anything close to 3x times the price of a 360 but I can't. It's not possible. The same thing will happen when the PS3 comes out. The fact that companies sell their consoles at a loss is the reason why I go out of my way to buy them. - SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Aren't you going to wait and see what kind of gameplay the PS3 is capable of first? We don't even know what the controller looks like.
- Frinkahedron, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4A 60 gig hard drive really won't drive up cost, especially since they'll be buying a few million of them.
- themulf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3No one hear really knows how much it cost sony to make a ps3, regardless of what that "Meryl lynch" out line said (which had wonky math). So it also cant be said what they will lose, and how far they are from bankruptcy. Hell that's what stocks are for, and if they are purposed to sell millions of ps3's then share holder confidence will help. None of us know how high the price will be, just the min (around 425$). Its all still in the works, and even first party sony developers dont know all the facts. Just give it time, we will learn all the crap at e3.
- gamekid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"if it's a good solid console, that can stay around for awhile, who cares? Especially with jazz like blu-ray"
I doubt Blu-Rry's a GOOD thing, considering that even Sony has had some big problems with it. I can't imagine how many issues we'll try to dodge there.
Besides, we still don't know HOW or even IF it'll be used. At least it has some form of Linux...but how much will it stray from the usual distros?
--and $425...is a few minutes of pwnage really worth it? At least a PC lets me do my homework. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5It also boils down to third party support. Which i heard is going to the 360 since it is easier to code. And who is telling the turth to the public. After the past couple of months i dont know if i can believe Sony anymore
- ToeCheese, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2@gamekid
Any next generation is Disc format is a good thing.
BluRay will be the one who initially benefits from the PS3 release because at the very least that means over a million units on the market by the end of the year.
PS3 will benefit later on as games go beyond the DVD storage limit. The developers of "Enchant Arm" will required 2 DVDs for their game. Obivilion's devs are stating 4 disc!
See the XBox is in the same boat as the Dreamcast. The only way they will see a next generation drive will be on an external drive. - quamb, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5i just dont get why sony and ms have decided to create these super expensive consoles?
sure when new-gen consoles come out they've always been pricey - but this is getting ridiculous. rather then developing fun video game consoles seems sony and ms are battling it out to put their own propriety computers in our living rooms. - Quickbreak, on 10/12/2007, -9/+11@vanden9: There's a revolutionary new invention. It's called "sarcasm." Apparently you haven't heard of it.
- TheFoo, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Are they going to ship a version that plays videogames too?
- wildwobby, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5improvement over the 'ol 8mb card.
- antipro, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I didnt clarify because I didnt think it needed clarification. And I still don't.
I said I hadnt heard anything about Overheating, that applies to all consoles. - the_snitch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I think he means the console will be big because it will need to fit the HD in with all the other hardware, which they already stated was difficult to fit into the proposed enclosure. Those mock ups at e3 were just empty shells
- SparQy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Does this mean a BIGGER unit than the original XBOX?
You gotta figure that it will be a 3.5 inch format then (not the 2.5" laptop format drive that the xbox 360 premium sports) -- otherwise costs will skyrocket even further. Even if they get a great buy, wholesale on the 3.5" format is like 60% the cost... - uthaman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Will the PS3 have a TV tuner? I would agree that 60GB seems to indicate Tivo functionality... But, damn Sony is including everything but a kitchen sink in the PS3! I don't see how they DON'T keep the cost of the thing under $800.
- superkendall, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Odd, I do not remember Ico or Shadow of the Collosus being ported...
Some things will be ported but the PS2 had a pretty large number of interesting titles that were not ported and I'm not sure will be in the future. - antipro, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7**************************************************************************************************
The financial magazine didn't even include the price of a hardrive in the $900 estimate
************************************************************************************************** - BlindIrishman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9@madman yes they did, but that requires the additional $12 a month payment plan with $150 down.
- antipro, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3well they didn't even get the math right in the Merril report so that was one of the main reasons people blasted it.
My favorite reason though is when people say "Sony is not dumb enough to sell a system for $900" as if Sony selling it for $400 and losing $500 on each system would be a smart thing.
It will come out eventually. It may not be as good as they say it is (the PS2 wasnt) but that doesnt mean people wont buy it (myself included). I would like them to set a price ahead of time though. - MadMan459, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9LOL. Didn't MS include functional power supplies in an upgrade pack option?
- DEFSMAC, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3the PS2 had a hard drive. a crappy one that was utilized by like 4 games. let me know what it will actually be used for and it won't end up being a paper weight and i might get excited.
- jpesicka2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5if i wanted a blu-ray player, i would fork over like $10 mre to get it. BUT I DON'T. i think hd-dvd is fine. externall y accesible by my xbox 360 i will soon be able to netflix my life away with hd-dvd.
- EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3All those who defended criticism of Sony for not including a hard drive with the Playstation that will now make fun of the XBox 360 for not having one please raise your hands. Nobody?
Liars! - nnonix, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The next-gen games need more-power. That is the reason for the pricey machines. And before anyone says differently, Graphics is what people want ... so they are delivering what people ask for most. Simple.
- anagami, on 07/02/2008, -0/+1If the Cell processor has a better performance than their competitors and if I've the money to burn it will be great to mod and put gnu/linux on it :D ...specially since it will cost less to me than it costs Sony to produce it.
- cyrix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You said the exact same thing happened with the Xbox and PS2. You mentioned you didn't hear anything about overheating with the 360. Now would it have been so hard for you to clarify what you had meant to begin with? No it wouldn't have been that hard at all.
- distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It boils down to Incog Inc., Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Team Ico, Polyphony Digital, Zipper Interactive, Psygnosis, Guerilla, Factor 5, Harmonix, Ninja Theory, and the rest of Sony WWS (the strongest first-party developers in the world)
vs.
Bizarre, Rare, Bungie
vs.
Miyamoto
I'm going to be very happy with my PS3 + Revolution - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1We've known it'll be a 2.6" HDD since E3 '05, and you can clearly see the slot for it on the side of the console.
And yes, antipro, it will be upgradable. Didn't you even read the blurb? - distrbnce, on 10/12/2007, -0/+17 months is plenty of time to save $2000...
not that you'll need that grossly exaggerated amount -
