- DrScott, on 10/12/2007, -1/+54The last time I was at EB the young, asian, clerk at the register shouted, "HENTAI!" over my head across the room to the young asian woman who was stocking games. They were both asian, and they were both laughing.
- Klowner, on 10/12/2007, -2/+46The article says "lose", the digg post says "loose", so the.. poster purposefully copied the entire first paragraph and deliberately made the spelling incorrect.. bravo *golf clap*
- MAdaXe42, on 10/12/2007, -8/+46Ho hum - sarcasm obviously finds itself gliding blissfully over the heads of you people - if such a person as that which I encapsulated in my aforementioned post existed, and was encountered by myself, they'd probably be gently torn to pieces.
- delightfuldemon, on 10/12/2007, -5/+39madaxe, I know it's sarcasm (or I hope to god it is), but I've got to digg you down, it's just offensive to my eyes.
- DrScott, on 10/12/2007, -8/+37Ze goggles! Zey do nothing!
- Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25"Oh, and don’t forget to tighten up those graphics in level 3 on your way out."
Anybody else seen the awful commercial for that game design school? That's so funny that the writer put that in, nicely placed. - BenKaras, on 10/12/2007, -3/+23You mean the guys creating the tools that game developers use to design games for the Nintendo Wii don't have Nintendo Wii's? Ain't that a bitch...
- danknerd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22Yeah I know what you mean, I remember Babbages at the mall when I was younger. Very helpful, didnt try and push stuff on me, told me about new stuff coming out instead and then proceeded to give me demos. Also they actually carried PC games back then too. That is my biggest grief with Gamestop/EB no PC games. Their excuse, they dont sell.. I tell them thats cause you dont have any fool!
- MAdaXe42, on 10/12/2007, -9/+27I suggest a blindfold and a shotgun. That usually works.
- danknerd, on 10/12/2007, -5/+23Oh screw your pity, no one forced you to work there. In fact, if I worked some place that was held up at gun point, the next day I would get a different job.
- Step1Mark, on 10/12/2007, -0/+15or he doesn't know how to copy and paste
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -8/+23@madaxe42
English or some other intelligible language please - Coltb, on 10/12/2007, -5/+19Funny and True, Video game stores have lost their way and thanks to our living in a free market society someone will hopefully fix that pretty soon
- Akronos, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16Madaxe42, you definitely get points in my book for saying "Ho hum".
- theshalit, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15Digital Dist ftw!
- nickj6282, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13@burritoking
There's an old saying here on the internet: "don't feed the trolls." - Calypsoaf, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15My lvl 64 Warlock owns his paltry lvl 63.
- likephatec, on 10/12/2007, -3/+15that joke went so far over your head it got hijacked and flown into a major landmark.
- Zer0Status, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14I got an even better excuse for the not having wiis, an employee for gamestop told me that "Nintendo infringed on a copyright held by logitech when it came to a motion sensing controller, and are being sued, they can't sell any until the suit goes away." hearing this I sarcasticly replied "well it's a good thing I already have a wii"
- danknerd, on 10/12/2007, -3/+14Do what I do after work -- take many bong hits and forget about it.
- McDLT2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+17It's spelled LOSE, not LOOSE.
- heinousjay, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10I'm sorry, friend, but if you think that your job at target is working harder than someone with a better paying job elsewhere, you're in for a sad and sorry surprise out in the non-retail world.
You have it easy now. The most you have to deal with is bitchy customers. Wait till you're expected to solve real problems. - saska, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8You know what? I love the guys at my local GameStop. I feel like they're the stoner little brother and his stoner friends I never had. They actually do know something about games and given how long most of them have been there, I think they probably huddle together and deal with the corporate crap in order to get to keep working in a game store.
With that said, the EB Games 6 miles away from that one is the most miserable retail establishment I've ever had the misfortune of stumbling into.
So here's a hint: if you actually like games and your job, act like it. Then maybe gamer chicks like me will make comments about you like I just did about the GameStop boys. - ErinIsADrunk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8bravo. He said pretty much everything I was thinking when I read the "Confessions of a Game Store Clerk" article that was on digg the other day.
- Urusai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8I buy my games at Walmart...I'm missing out on full retail pricing and obnoxious sales pitches for pre-orders, credit cards, and back alley handjobs. On the plus side, I don't have to deal with wondering where the hell Orange Julius has gone.
- sogracefully, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9here's one for the suggestion box:
just because i am a girl and i am in the game store, can you not totally ignore me/treat me like i'm a preschooler and can only understand how to play hello kitty island adventure (if even that)/look at me like i got lost on my way to nordstrom? - richardliquor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8why take the time to reply to something about nothing?
- yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7why digg him down for digital distribution? it's obviously catching on.
- ShortRoundTwo, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Ok as a EB Games employee I feel like I must say something; to at least try to defend my fellow employees. Believe me when I say we hate asking you these stupid questions, and assaulting you with preorders, and magazine subscriptions more than you hate hearing them. The reason why we do it is simple, if we don't we get fired, simple as that.
No we don't work of commission we're all the peons make minimum wage, and we have the highest employee turnover rate of any Fortune 500 company. Must of the people working at EB or Gamestop don't even like games, and only have a rudimentary knowledge that allows them to get by in their day to day.
So please don't hate us too much, our jobs are tough enough as it is. - danknerd, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Yeah that is Collins College, in Tempe, AZ.. they suck!
- zweben, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I dugg the story just for that refrence.
- alky, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Because everyone who has a better job than you must be there because someone else helped them out, right? You sound worse than what you're complaining about.
(irony) - Tempest811, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I actually once had an employee laugh at me directly for buying a game.
I ask for the game from the shelves and I hear "oh my god someone's actually BUYING that game?" followed by suppressed laughter.
I've never felt so belittled by someone in my life. - joker84, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9ah, the many moods of madaxe....
- kigabit, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5lol madaxe, first an overly idiotic use of language, followed by an extremely verbose post. I suppose if you mashed the two together it might sound like a normal human being :)
Also, I'm having a good time trying to picture how to "gently" tear someone to pieces. - mykos, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Yeah, it's all of retail that deals with the same crap Gamestop does. The reason Gamestop employees are lashing out at the community is that their employers are getting a crapload of negative attention from many internet sites, which their customers read, which in turn makes their lives that much harder. If their lives can be made more miserable because of the internet, it's only fair that they should be allowed to complain on that same internet.
- AnimalTaglits, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Dugg for that last line.
- spacecadetjuno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5You know I don't mind this I think it is a good backlash to the whiny people coming about how there job sucks all jobs suck my job sucks I don't blog about it I bitch to my friends. But on the flip side the people I see at the stores sometimes they are nice people and you can tell they are nice people so the next time one of these guys asks me to pre-order a game I will. No harm in that helps them keep there job. I think everything would be a lot better if we just all try to help each other out.
- KlayBorg, on 11/06/2007, -1/+6Digital Distribution, once it overcomes the technical problems will be brilliant, as it frees indie developers from the constraints of having to publish, box and ship ect.
It will also promote the physical stores to offer better value or incentive to buying there (Ie. Better trade in value). - xerokitsune, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Problem is most of the game stores now a days are owned by the same parent company, so all of them have become eerily similar.
That and most of the game store employees will get into trouble for giving the customers the experience that they actually want. (Ya I worked the VG retail for a bit of time, I had to have had a lot of "You have good sales numbers but your percentage of *upsale item*s is pathetic." meetings and a few times through the retraining due to low percentage of upsale items) - yournamehere, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5nickgravelyn,
i don't hate my job. you seem like a loser to me.
as for your comments to potential customers, i would say it's that attitude that will close your 'stores' and drive the people to order online exclusively. that will then leave you with no job since you obviously lack any skill and/or tact.
good luck sitting your unemployed ass at home. I look forward to seeing your special on Oprah when they have to knock a wall down to get you to the hospital. - MewTwo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@ so gracefully... same here....
I have been getting the sexism a lot lately... somebody will ask me a question, then i will hear them later asking the same question to one of my male cohorts. Something as simple as when a game is due out... you think I just pulled a date out of my ass? You really think I'm that retarded?
To my customers... if I don't know the answer to your question, I'll look it up, or ask one of my coworkers. I'm not going to make ***** up. - lochness, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Amen to THAT !!! (theshalit that is)
http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/03/30 - PlaidPhantom, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Well, madaxe, the thing is that sarcasm doesn't actually translate through text. Thus, /sarcasm pseudotags. :)
- Zer0Status, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8It's the job to put up with customers ***** or not. Service industry my friend, I work in a pharmacy but I won't complain because It's not a hard job, and I actually get satisfaction in helping a customer. I don't bitch because I get ***** pay, that's my choice. Same with the people who work in these game stores. They should grin and bear it, and help the customer in need.
- DontSayFanboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Pre-ordering does not guarantee anyone a copy of the game. It guarantees the store $5 and it guarantees that you'll come back and likely make another purchase.
- thepotatoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3or the article fixed it after he submitted it to digg.
- ZeroFresh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The post is satire. It's a parody of all those "Confessions of a GameStop Employee" things. Though I will admit it could have been done better.
Having dated a girl that used to work at GameStop, I must admit that the writer couldn't be more inaccurate, yet accurate at the same time. The uptight GM's forcing mundane routines is very true. However, when the GM wasn't there (my ex-girlfriend was the store manager) it was a whole different story. If some one was going to buy a game she knew sucked, she would tell them to try it on the demo system first before they wasted their money. If kids were being jerks in the store she would have one of the employees (the two employees that worked with her were also her best friends) follow them around constantly asking them if they needed anything or tell them whatever game they were trying to buy was out of stock. - decay, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I went to gamestop yesterday and I was shocked at how the guy didn't know much about video games.
He told this mom type customer that there was no football games for the Wii.
She walks over to look at some wii games for her kids and she finds Madden 07. This wasn't the only thing, he was a dumbass in general. - thepotatoman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2http://tightengraphics.ytmnd.com/
