- Aidenag, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7ive been playin online poker for years now, and offline i was born into essentially.. ill take a computer on ANY day of the week... you cant teach a computer even half of what skills are needed to be a long term winner...
sure you can create software now that will let your bot win $5-50 a day at some Micro-limits table where the people suck, and the stakes dont matter.. But this isnt chess... Deepblue isnt ganna beat the Crap out of Doyle, or The Phils anytime soon..
- skrowl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Too bad we can't download the source or a binary to try our own luck against. I'd like to see how I fare against the poker bot.

If by long-term, you mean LONG TERM, then only a computer can go for days without rest. Unless it's running Windows ME. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2i made 700$ the other day in a tournament online :)
- neko, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Obviously the computer has a handicap because it can't read the faces of it's opponents, but on the flip-side, it doesn't have any 'tell's and can't be intimidated. And. It. Will. Never. Stop.
So, a game between computers and a game between humans is very different. Between humans, you have to be able to dig through all that psychology. The computer can't read all that, and it just goes on probability.
To quote Calculon: "That's what I wanted you to think, with your soft, human brain." - andreas1999, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2texas hold 'em has been big all around the world for at least a year now (probably a lot longer in some countries). it's spreading :)
- bennybertow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Interesting that this is coming up now... Yesterday there was a Texas Hold'Em event on TV here in Germany. Seems that's a new trend.
Do any of you guys know a (free) offline poker game? Possibly also for J2ME? - covertbadger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1As mentioned above, if you want to play a poker bot just get on a low stakes table at an offshore site ;-)
- inactive, on 09/09/2009, -0/+1Check out the article I just submitted. The computer will be taken any day of the week.
- videogamechamp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I would love to try my luck, but I'm not too good at poker, and would just blow money trying.
- sincewednesday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This program hasn't even gone that far. The press release only mentions its predecessor defeating two other pokerbots; this program will compete in an AI conference's "Computer Poker Competition" (against other computers).
Poker isn't just about the statistics of the cards -- betting can be psychological. Against a human player, a program would have to be much more advanced than this one. which is described as having "precomputed strategies" for the first two rounds of betting, leaving it easily susceptible to bluffing. - EtherGnat, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1With the right sensors and programming a computer could detect body heat levels, vocal stress, and other tell tale signs and potentially become quite good at detecting a bluff. On the other hand I can guarantee that you will never (absent predictable coding) be able to tell when a computer is bluffing.
It's a matter of when--not if computers will become better poker players. - discodog75, on 03/23/2009, -0/+0more poker in french here http://jpg-poker.com
