Computer Games as art
americangoy.blogspot.com — EA, Blizzard, and their ilk have been releasing the same FPS, RTS, adventure clone games for years. The meme of "computer games are for kids!" is still in effect, stifling creativity, innovation and adult theme games... But there is hope on the horizon - take heart!

- Xirus08, on 04/16/2008, -0/+0This sounds like a really fun interesting game... except I believe that the reason why there are all those WWII games is because if you compare the thoughts after you win the game it is quite different... "I just help win the war, against thousands of soldiers." or "I just save a town from a disease..." the latter one just doesn't sound all that amazing....
The only hope is to lose all hope - magoghm, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2That game seems to be really great!
- shellnet, on 04/16/2008, -0/+2Holodeck ftw!
- TrevaLVF, on 04/16/2008, -0/+3I'm a firm believer that if you don't like what's available, then make it yourself. One of the features that impressed me about the 3D modeling and animation program - Blender (which is open-source and free and can be downloaded at http://blender.org ) is that it also has a feature for game programmers and 3D game artists. Of course, your best bet is to do it on a 64bit OS, because that 3d plus animation stuff can tax a 32 bit OS and cause it to crash after it reaches the maximum 2 or 3 Gig per session limit. Anyway, you can make your own games, collaborate with other programmers and artists. There are lots of discussion boards and sites with tutorials, support and idea exchanges, including some where people can call on other talent to collaborate.

- TrevaLVF, on 04/17/2008, -0/+1It takes some getting used to. It's not the typical type of program. One of the first things you notice is that there's more than one "window" and that there isn't the standard top menu bar (the kind displaying drop-down field menus under File, Edit, View, whatever else, and Help). The tutorials really help, especially the ones compiled at Blender's wiki pages ( http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Tutorials/Links# ... ). At first, it can be discouraging, but those tutorials help to keep a person from just giving up and abandoning the whole thing. Just know, the authors of some of those tutorials aren't perfect, as I discovered with some confusing moments, but there are lots of forums, like the Blender Artists, where somebody might be able to help if you get stuck.
