- Imortus, on 09/01/2009, -0/+34This is a very peculiar list. I have little doubt the bad games are all poor, but the "best" list is completely random and reads like "the five games the author could best remember in a pinch."
- ChiefUCF, on 09/01/2009, -5/+37No Knights of the Old Republic?
- coopa, on 09/01/2009, -2/+23Fable?! Fable was an 'ok' game, it was far to linear and half the things Peter Molyneux promised were not there. It shouldn't be considered one of the best. It's definitely a well made and polished game, but it shouldn't be in the top RPGs.
- TheCash, on 09/01/2009, -1/+22You'd think a "Complete Guide" would be comprised of more then 2 pages.
- salinungatha, on 09/01/2009, -0/+13"But rather than outline a list of the greatest RPGs ever, we've decided to take a look back at the best and worst the genre has had to offer over the last five years. "
- fritzek, on 09/01/2009, -5/+18No Baldur's Gate? FAIL!
- thanakar, on 09/01/2009, -0/+12World of Warcraft turn based fighting style?? WTF?
- inactive, on 09/01/2009, -1/+12I can't believe "ANUS BREAKER 3D" didn't make the list
- shiftkgb, on 09/01/2009, -2/+12Oblivion gets more praise than Morrowind (and it is a good game) but Bethesda's gold really was TES3: Morrowind hands down. Story, environment, itemization, quests, guilds, everything was done better.
- fritzek, on 09/01/2009, -3/+13It shouldn't be in any list of RPG's. It's was adventure for little kids. I even think the Diablo was more RPG than this game.
- Kornstalx, on 09/01/2009, -0/+10Enix games don't count?
Dragon Warrior is what made me a nerd, man... - dark2025, on 09/01/2009, -1/+10I disagree, I think JRPGs' dialogues seem a bit crude compared to WRPGs.
Cloud: "I wonder how Aerith is doing"
Aerith: "Cloud, are you there?"
Cloud: "Aerith!? You safe?"
Aerith: "Yeah, I'm all right."
Aerith: "I knew that Cloud would come for me."
Cloud: "Hey, I'm your bodyguard, right?"
Aerith: "The deal was for one date, right?"

The Nameless One: "I *think* I feel the stirrings of memory... tell me more. Perhaps your words shall chase the shadows from my mind, Deionarra."
Deionarra: "Oh, at last the fates show mercy! Even death cannot chase me from your mind, my Love! Do you not see? Your memories shall return! Tell me how I can help you, and I shall!"
The Nameless One: "Do you know who I am?"
Deionarra: "You are one both blessed and cursed, my Love. And you are one who is never far from my thoughts and heart."
The Nameless One: "'Blessed and cursed?' What do you mean?"
Deionarra: "The nature of your curse should be apparent, my Love. Look at you. Death rejects you. Your memories have abandoned you. Do you not pause and wonder why?"
The above were taken from Final Fantasy VII and Planescape Torment, respectively. I've played both and I have enjoyed both, but I just don't believe it when people say JRPGs are more story-oriented. Torment is one of the greatest and most dialogue-laden RPGs to ever exist. In fact all the Infinity Engine games (Baldur's Gate) are good story-wise. If you're saying WRPGs don't have story you've been playing too much Diablo. - TwwIX, on 09/01/2009, -2/+11Vampire: The Masquerade - A very underrated RPG game that was overshadowed by the release of Half-Life 2.
Jade Empire - Another gem by Bioware
Deus Ex - How the ***** do you not put this on your list?
The Witcher - One of the better recent RPG games. It has titties!
Neverwinter Nights - Great RPG game with a big mod community. I didn't enjoy the sequel as much though.
And what about classics such as Baldur's Gate, the Diablo and Jagged Alliance series?
What a piss poor list. IGN needs to fire this writer. - SirLowKey, on 09/01/2009, -0/+9Dugg for Freedom Force;
"Thug with bat: All I'm saying is that Heisenberg clearly postulates... oh no! Hero-types! Get in character!
Thug with bat: We'll smash you good!
Thug with bat: Hey, you! " - Megadeth222, on 09/01/2009, -1/+9This list is so complete it blows my mind.
Also, no final fantasy?? Cmon... - salinungatha, on 09/01/2009, -0/+7"But rather than outline a list of the greatest RPGs ever, we've decided to take a look back at the best and worst the genre has had to offer over the last five years. "
- fritzek, on 09/01/2009, -3/+10True RPG on console? Are you kidding, right?
- fritzek, on 09/01/2009, -0/+7How to ensure that everyone visits your page full of ads:
1) Create catching title
2) Create dumb list
3) In the article explain, that the title doesn't correspond with the list
4)...
5) Profit - salinungatha, on 09/01/2009, -1/+8"But rather than outline a list of the greatest RPGs ever, we've decided to take a look back at the best and worst the genre has had to offer over the last five years. "
- InternetJordo, on 09/01/2009, -0/+7This Complete Guide is only at Level 76.
- Locastus, on 09/01/2009, -0/+7Yeah, but they didnt even manage to include the best games from the last FIVE YEARS
- Sparky9292, on 09/01/2009, -1/+7Knights of the Old Republic (the first one) is a great intro to RPGs esp if you are into Star Wars. It has a World of Warcraft turn-based fighting system that seemed a bit lame at first but is really fun as the game progresses. Jennifer Hale does the sexist voice for Bastilla (in a classy jedi way) -- I wanted to keep hearing her talk.
Again, I started playing it figuring I would just quit after 15 minutes, but then about 15 hours later, finished the final battle with Malak. - JigoroKano, on 09/01/2009, -1/+7RPG on rails are a totally different genre to a Bioware RPG.
- apothekari, on 09/01/2009, -0/+6True.
But the DIGG article {You know...The place we are all commenting @!} states "Complete Guide For Best And Worst Role Playing Games" not "the best and worst the genre has had to offer over the last five years"!
Folks are bitching @ the inaccurate article description and even then, going by their own rules it's a ***** list. - MonkeyNews, on 09/01/2009, -1/+6Fallout 3 and Oblivion are responsible for stealing my life.
- hamdoken, on 09/01/2009, -1/+6This article is another footnote in the fall of gaming journalism. If you look at all the RPGs made in the past 5 years and you put Fable on the "Cheers" list, you're obviously being paid off for your 'journalism'.
I hope that gamers aren't so quick to forget the fiasco that was the manufactured Fable hype machine, and the paid-off 10 out of 10s. - yocouchdigga, on 09/01/2009, -0/+5SOE: 2 was completely awesome. Watch your tone.
- KyotoWolf, on 09/01/2009, -0/+515 hours? I replayed it recently and got 31 hours out of it (and an extra 30 from the The Sith Lords), maybe I just dawdle
- danj484, on 09/01/2009, -1/+6Black Isle > Square
- Urrelles, on 09/01/2009, -0/+4Then....just like Spore....everyone beat Fable in 5 minutes and went back to playing Morrowwind and Knight of the Old Republic for the 25th time.
- salinungatha, on 09/01/2009, -0/+4Yeah the list is just for the last 5 years, which is pretty much just laziness, pretty much just choose the 5 biggest hits of the last 5 years .
- Zaij, on 09/01/2009, -0/+4Are you just going to say that same damn comment to everyone?
Even with that caveat it's a retarded list. - theinsane, on 09/01/2009, -0/+3Gothic III is actually pretty good if you apply the latest community patch. The game's initial release was marred by myriads of bugs, but enough have been fixed to make it a solid game to play through.
- vpshockwave, on 09/01/2009, -0/+3There were siltstriders you ***** moron. Did you even play the game?
I agree hands down. I hated oblivion. Morrowind rocked the socks off Oblivion. Huge let down. - Pyros7, on 09/01/2009, -0/+3"You got a real and clear sense that your actions mattered in the world..."
I want the version of Fable this dude played. In mine if you were evil the townspeople ran away from you and....well that's about it.
I'm glad I got the game used for a few bucks because it sucked. - SteveMax, on 09/01/2009, -0/+3Even comparing console JRPGs to linear Western RPGs,they're completely different.
- N0DIGGITY, on 09/01/2009, -1/+4just for fun, i dugg this one up :)
- Zaij, on 09/01/2009, -3/+6Fallout 3 over Fallout 1, 2, Planescape: Torment - hell, pretty much any Black Isle Studios game = one massive ***** fail.
- salinungatha, on 09/01/2009, -0/+3yes. and I agree its a crap list. but people should make informed commentary.
- Memitim, on 09/01/2009, -0/+3Don't be mean. Comparing any game to Planescape: Torment is just setting up the other game for disappointment. :)
- danj484, on 09/01/2009, -4/+7"But rather than outline a list of the greatest RPGs ever, we've decided to take a look back at the best and worst the genre has had to offer over the last five years. "
- Urrelles, on 09/01/2009, -0/+2I was shocked to see Freedom force up there. Good game and it runs on an Asus Netbook with no prob. Its the perfect portable game.
- warbird, on 09/01/2009, -1/+3Icewind Dale!
- salinungatha, on 09/01/2009, -0/+2spot on
- thanakar, on 09/01/2009, -0/+2Sacred and Sacred 2 stole my life, along with Bioshock.
- fritzek, on 09/01/2009, -0/+2Elranzer: Have you ever tried i.e. Neverwinter Nights? Thats basically the computer version of the tabletop game. You can be a dungeon master in a real-time game(it's actually turn-based, but the feel is like real-time) and make the adventure for other people. Acting for NPCs, spawning enemies and items based on the game progress, adding obstacles,... I can't imagine doing that on a console.
- Cebo, on 09/01/2009, -2/+4If you're a popular game from a big publisher, IGN will gladly put you on a "best" list no matter how badly your game sucks as a rpg (Oblivion, Fable). But if you're a small developer or publisher, "worst" list is where you go.
- anthonylitz, on 09/01/2009, -0/+2Bad List. Article is not even worth reading mostly. Seems like most of these games just came out in the last 3ish years. Though I did giggle at the comment about the game was like unfinished as if the developers left the doors unlocked and someone stole half the content!
- crimaluca, on 09/01/2009, -0/+2The complexity of a WRPG is on a whole different level then a JRPG. The sacrifice that comes along with so much freedom is that sometimes choices cause the main storyline to be less focused... but recent games such as mass effect, fallout 3 and even torment demonstrate that western RPGs actually have *BETTER* story lines. No cheesy pretty boy characters in stupid costumes. What the Dark Knight was to Batman Forever is what Western RPGS are to Japanese RPGs. Honestly play one and beat one then you'll know what I'm talking about.
I know a lot of people like you who are turned off with the less then flashy style of WRPGs, they went and played the WRPG for a couple minutes with a biased attitude and came out with an attitude of pure hatred. - N0DIGGITY, on 09/02/2009, -0/+2not everybody jizzes over anime
