Coming Soon to an Xbox Near You
washingtonpost.com — Xbox owners will soon be able to watch movies streamed through game consoles to their TVs, thanks to a deal Microsoft has landed with online rental service Netflix. The announcement was made yesterday at a Microsoft news conference given on the eve of the E3 Media and Business Summit, a major video game industry trade show in Los Angeles.

- gubatron2, on 07/15/2008, -1/+15I remember telling David Clark from Joost in front of over 100 people, about a year ago, if they were not considering porting Joost as an Xbox free app, he gave me a stupid politically correct answer. Netflix saw that consoles are already sitting on people's living rooms, it wasn't vision for business, it was the obvious thing to do. Good news for Netflix, more bad news for Joost, more and more I don't see it happening for them. As for Microsoft, they give all their Xbox Live suscribers one more reason not to ditch the Xbox for the PS3 and keep paying the monthly fee.
- goldfenix, on 07/15/2008, -1/+16If the cost for this is just my present Netflix subscription... well, I'm pretty certain I won't have much of a need for the physical discs they keep sending me anymore.
- ptsuk, on 07/15/2008, -0/+1except when you realize that you're only going to be watching the available "watch it now" offerings which none of the new releases are going to be you'll still need your discs sent.
the watch now offerings aren't all that great mostly the same stuff you'd see on cable tv as the "tuesday night movie" or whatnot, lots of stuff from the 80's, 90's, tv seasons, documentary, and its all "streamed" even if you download it its not DVD quality its more like VHS.
The funny thing is that every computer that has a media center can do this now with a simple plug in vcs or something like that can't remember as i'm not at my media center.

- akpwnz, on 07/15/2008, -1/+16This is the best idea since sliced bread.
- skewl, on 07/15/2008, -1/+16If you want online multiplayer, the answer is very simple. Xbox 360 .The Xbox 360 has great online games like Gears of War, Call of Duty 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Halo 3, Team Fortress 2(In The Orange Box), Rock Band, Rainbow Six Vegas.
- CollapseControl, on 07/15/2008, -1/+6Not only is it great to play those games with friends, but come this fall after you and 7 friends are done playing you can all hop out of the game and watch a movie together.
- AmyVernon, on 07/15/2008, -1/+12this is verrry cool. of course, it will give Microsoft a bigger stranglehold on the world, but for streaming movies? i'll cope...
- BCCStu, on 07/15/2008, -1/+12Score!!!

- WantToPlay, on 07/15/2008, -0/+5Yes, but now it will be free on your xbox...
- shearyadi, on 07/15/2008, -1/+10Cool information, I'm still thinking of which one to buy for my son, between PS3 or Wii
- WantToPlay, on 07/15/2008, -1/+4Neither, buy your son an xbox 360... It's awesome... Plus, if your son likes Rock Band, he'll love the new Rock Band 2 coming out soon this year. And it's only going to be released on xbox art first...
- burninlover, on 07/15/2008, -0/+3If you can afford it get him a Wii and a Xbox 360. The Wii you and him can enjoy together. And the Xbox 360 he can enjoy a lot of other games that you cannot get on the Wii.
- ToeCracker, on 07/15/2008, -0/+11This news will excite all x-box owners for sure.

- csiunatc, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2Cool, this has to be the future of all movie rentals. But i think that the cable companies are going to improve on this service until they knock netflix out unfortunately.
- sportscrzy33, on 07/15/2008, -0/+2That sounds like it could be a pretty cool feature and just might convince me to fork up the money to finally get one.
