- agentsrecord, on 04/09/2009, -0/+47Hey, Justin Marks, why don't YOU give video game movies a chance you stupid *****?
Your pathetic script for 'Chun-Li' didn't do the genre ANY favors. - mentallyinhell, on 04/09/2009, -0/+41I really don't see Clossus translating to film well.
- fanfablebig, on 04/09/2009, -0/+22I really don't think these people have played the game. you simply can't make a ***** movie out of this game. The entire game is just you and a horse. that's it. no dialogue expect for, "AGRO!" and that's it. all you do in the game is kill 16 monsters and travel to each one. HOW will somebody translate that into a film with out completely ***** up the story? might as well be a Uwe Boll film.
- Sconathon, on 04/09/2009, -1/+22The dude from Pan's Labyrinth should make this.
- zwilliams, on 04/09/2009, -0/+19We gave them plenty of chances.

Trying to turn games with minimal lore into movies almost never works. And when the game series has tons of lore, there is no way to compress it explore it properly within the confines of an hour-and-a-half or a two-hour movie. It just will not work. Directors, Screenplay writers don't care about the game as much as the fans of the games do. Once they admit that, and actually hire people who actually care about the properties they are working on, then maybe they will start producing worthwhile films. Otherwise it will just continue to be boiled down crap that will aim at the lowest-common-denominator as they usually do and ruin it for everyone. - bixby1, on 04/09/2009, -0/+18I like the idea behind what he's saying though. Nobody has perfected the alchemy of the game-to-film adaptation. At least he's optimistic about the future of it all.
- shibbyo, on 04/09/2009, -1/+15You've had your ***** chance, video game movies. You had your chance and you blew it.
- Velnich, on 04/09/2009, -1/+11ok, but take all the Uwe Boll ones off the list. Those were never honest attempts.
- darthweder, on 04/09/2009, -0/+10*applaud* Why has this made the front page? This guy wrote one of the worst video game movies to date, and he's talking about giving a game movie a chance? What's wrong with people....
- JudgeMonkey, on 04/09/2009, -0/+9What? You mean a main character that almost never talks, wanders around a barren landscape for a half hour and then climbs about on a giant creature and stabs it for no reason (except that the voices told him to.)
Sounds good to me.
BTW, yes, it was awesome to play, but that's a big leap to non-interactive. - Hamakuas, on 04/09/2009, -1/+9Only reason why Advent Children worked was because the operators of the source material were in direct control.
- winterisbetter, on 04/09/2009, -1/+9I am disgusted that this game is being translated into a film.
- coheedcollapse, on 04/09/2009, -0/+8The second I find out if there is a lot of dialogue or not is the second that I immediately reject or accept the movie as a good adaptation of the game.
The reason the story in-game succeeded so well is because of the unspoken bond between Wander and his horse as well as the iffy nature of destroying these wandering beasts. If the guy can pull all of this off with adding all sorts of unneeded dialogue, than it might just be a good film.
Unfortunately, that's crossing into the realm of "fan-pleasing" and "arty", both of which might have difficulty selling. I can't see Sony allowing that to happen with a video game movie unfortunately. - Ezmo, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7Video game adaptions aren't going to get any respect until they start being made by studios and directors who care about the material they're working with rather than just trying to extract cash from a built in fan base.
- TheInimitable, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7Would rather just have a sweet HD 3d re-release of the game, as long as we're dreaming.
- TwwIX, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7I'll have faith in this genre once proper writers and directors start getting involved in them. You certainly aren't one of them.
Every two bit hack seems to think that they can write a screenplay these days. ***** off, guy! - coheedcollapse, on 04/09/2009, -0/+7Wall-E
A great example of what good writers can do with extremely limited dialogue.
If they could get a class-act individual in there that could flesh out the relationship between Wander and Agro while concentrating on the beauty of the landscape and the fierce and exciting nature of the battles, it'd be great. Artificially forcing in dialogue would be crap.
If they can't get a writer that can do that, they shouldn't make the movie. Simple as that. - cerealjynx, on 04/09/2009, -1/+8I don't have a lot of faith in Justin Marks.
But if he can pull it off, that means there might be a sequel in the form of Ico. - coheedcollapse, on 04/09/2009, -0/+6The failure of video game movies has nothing to do with "proper alchemy" and much more to do with a studio's willingness to pass a game that is obviously going to need a *****-ton of CGI budget to a writer who has only the failed Chun-Li movie under his belt. They're going to funnel all of the movies in "OMGZ ACTION SCENE" and not care about whether the progression of events in the movie is worth a ***** like they always do.
I really hope the guy proves me wrong, but I'm keeping my mind incredibly closed until I hear more about this. If it ends up looking horrible, I want to close it out of my mind before it ruins my favorite PS2 game for me. - Hamakuas, on 04/09/2009, -0/+6Boy people are dense, they already made a Halo, it's called "Aliens".
"No they didn't, it's not the same"
*eyeroll* - pseudononymist, on 04/09/2009, -0/+6Tom Hanks made a decent movie with nothing but an island and a volleyball. It's certainly possible, but Marks doesn't have the reputation to support his opinions.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5Yeah seriously. Of course the guy who is writing the movie is already defending it. Not a good sign.
- pseudononymist, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5yeah, but those were the worst parts of the movie.
- Asianwaste, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5Sorry, but I'm more cynical.
I never thought I'd ever hear "Shadow of the Colossus" and the word "suck" so close to each other. - evergrim, on 04/09/2009, -0/+5I can see this movie working well in 3d. Would look pretty epic to see a collosus towering over you.
- GlitchEnzo, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4I don't understand all of the people saying it shouldn't have dialog. He has to talk to Dormin to setup the whole "deal". I hope they actually add more of him talking to Agro. I picture it kind of like ***** and Yakul in Princess Mononoke.
My guess is, they are going to start with him in his village or whatever and they will explain who the girl is in order to build emotion attachment in the audience. They will probably show the first and last colossus in detail and just have a montage showing clips of about 6 other colossi. - cyrix, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4The difference to me is that this game turned movie has a plot that could translate very very well to the big screen. I can see the beginning playing out in a very similar manner onto film very easily. As would the ending, the only issue I could see is being able to fit all the battles into one film. That would ruin a lot of the whole plot if they couldn't really make you experience the effect of taking down these large beasts.
- xombi242, on 04/09/2009, -0/+4Nope. Not going to be good.
- coheedcollapse, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3Just noticed I used the wrong "then". I'm going to grammar Nazi myself before someone else decides to do it.
I also used "with" instead of "without". - Exhibitionist, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3Agreed. Just watched Chun Li last night and OMFG, it was like masturbating with a cheese grater. It was as if they were trying their hardest to make the movie complete *****.
- inactive, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3Here's what I don't get. How does a game like Doom fail to translate into a half-decent movie? All you friggin' had to do was rip off Aliens and throw some demons in there for good measure. All that was needed was a bunch of running around blasting monsters, and somehow they managed to screw that up.
- diggrim, on 04/11/2009, -0/+3I thought the original Street Fighter movie was good :)
(bury me) - fanfablebig, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4really, the ENTIRE movie is tom hanks on an island huh? nothing to do with Helen Hunt??? no other actors?
- Remy1985, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4Why not just focus on making another colossus game?
- JudgeMonkey, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3No, writing implies that it has a story and scenes. Something EVERY movie must have, or it's just a black square (or hell, if someone doesn't write down black, it could be a blue, white, red, purple, etc... square.)
But, it will probably be full of dialogue and feature four Hanna Montana songs. - Velnich, on 04/09/2009, -0/+3He should also make any other SH movie that gets made.
- captainpugwash, on 04/09/2009, -1/+4Tomb raider had its *ahem* good points
- reyoo30309, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2We have....
- kiwimonk, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Huh? Give it a chance? Look, make a good movie and people watch it.. It's that simple.
- executorzz, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2Comic book based movies used to be sucky too. Maybe videogames will catch up to their level one day.
- Hamakuas, on 04/09/2009, -2/+4Oh wait, they already made the movie, it's called the Never Ending Story...
IF, and this is a huge f-ing "IF" they manage to capture the feel that you get when you watch the first never ending story and
Atreyu tries to save Artax and fails (in my opinion a strong inspiration between the wanderer and Argo) http://tiny.cc/GVw4N
as well as the sphinx gate scene http://tiny.cc/acWMB, and generally the whole feel of the film without the 80's cheesyness, then it MIGHT be a success...
... but it won't be. Whoever funds the film will insist it be catered to children with a nice fluffy pg rating. It has to make money. There are no real special effects and the charm of the game, both of them, ico included was the seclusion you felt. the story told itself visually and they were both essentially "silent games".
This cannot be translated to a hollywood blockbuster without being gutted then re-engineered as the next potter film.
Leave the damn material alone you myopic fools.
I believe the writes can get it done.
The directors can get it done.
The actors can get it done as well as all supporting staff.
The studio will not allow it to get done the way it would need to because on paper it wouldn't show a profit. - Monotonousblob, on 04/09/2009, -0/+2I could only see this working if there really was no dialogue throughout most of the movie, as the main character would not be constantly be talking to himself out loud. This leaves it open to more interpretation and closer to the true meaning of the game. It worked fine for the first part of WALL-E, and if done right it could work wonderful. Imagine the first time you see the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, but ten times larger and in even greater detail. This would make a better Pixar or WETA movie, but I doubt I can trust him enough based on previous work to do anything thought-provoking.
- Recoil, on 04/14/2009, -0/+1"But Justin wants fans to start having a little faith because 'Colossus' might just blow big."
Keyword here is "blow". - Hamakuas, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_References_to_A ...
- Yage2006, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1How about NO!
I have never seen 1 videogame movie worth a rats fart. - WillyFourEyes, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1"...might just blow..."
I think I'll let that sentence fragment (taken completely out of context) speak for itself. - diggrim, on 04/11/2009, -0/+1I liked Street Fighter!
- rebelscribe, on 04/09/2009, -0/+1I've seen pretty much every video game based movie...and you can be sure I'll see this one. Well, maybe no see in theaters, but I will see it somewhere. Like most people, I don't really have that much faith.
I don't understand how all these bad movies get made. Doesn't anybody watch the movie before they release it? - Elranzer, on 04/12/2009, -0/+11. Neither were any Resident Evils
2. Same with the Resident Evils
3. Agreed - FluentinSarcasm, on 04/10/2009, -0/+1I understand your concerns, but I would like to play the Devil's advocate a little bit. If this movie can (miraculously) resemble the movie Castaway then we might have something interesting here. Tom Hanks, by himself, had 3/4 of the screen time for that entire movie. There were very few background characters and no sidekick (unless you count Wilson of course). It was just an amazing feat of undeniably good writing and acting ability. It turned the now simplified concept of man vs. nature into something brilliant and thought provoking. That is the potential I see in this movie.
One can hope.
Also, I am in no way advocating anything Justin Marks does... Chun Li was a steaming pile of cow ***** on a turd sandwich. I am merely looking at the glass half full. -
