- Balath, on 04/10/2008, -0/+58I know a guy that's about 25. A while back, he was complaining about how unpredictable some of the turtles in Mario Brothers were. Someone informed him that you could tell how they were going to react because they were different colors.
His reaction was priceless. "WHAT?! NO WAY!" After almost 20 years, he now knows Koopa Troopas are different colors. - timzen81, on 04/10/2008, -1/+37It's about time, as a developer of engineering software I always have to bring up the color blindness point of view. There are many color schemes for charts, graphs, and data that can end up being meaningless due to their dependency on reds and greens.
As for the games, it is painful when your mission is to go press the red switch, and the red is not obvious to us color blind folk.... good thing I save often :-) - h4mx0r, on 04/10/2008, -1/+35That's a circle? THAT LOOKS MORE LIKE AN ELLIPSE!
- StockOption, on 04/10/2008, -2/+31As a colorblind gamer, I have massive issues with any kind of puzzle games that make you see the difference between blues/purples or greens/yellows.
Why can't they just do shapes?! Nobody is shapeblind... - haikuFU, on 04/10/2008, -0/+29I'm colorblind, and I have HUGE problems playing FPS games and looking at charts and graphs. Traffic congestion maps are always bad because green means good flow, and red is bad. Too bad they look the same for me. I complained to our state highway dept that does the maps, and they FINALLY have a colorblind version that uses blue, yellow and black.
At my last job, we had 10 engineers in my group, and 8 of us were colorblind. Network equipment manufactures use red, green, and amber lights for status info. They all look the same to me.
It's ***** *****. Are colorblind people covered under any disability laws? - kaffein, on 04/10/2008, -0/+27http://www.tshirthell.com/shirts/products/a559/a55 ...
- dichotic40, on 04/10/2008, -1/+22I just wanted to point out, in Hexic you can turn on a feature that shows symbols inside of the pieces so that you can tell which are the same.
This is a really good point to ponder for developers though. - Guroom, on 04/10/2008, -0/+20Seriously, believe it or not this is an issue! I have trouble in FPS, like Call of Duty 4, where I CANNOT see the guy because his shade of green is just a wash in the background - untill he/she either moves or i watch the reply of my death - sad.
I doubt that this will ever be addressed though - I figure its the same reason the military won't draft me - you win some you lose some...(i rather lose in Call of Duty, than in a call for duty) - Frost9999, on 04/10/2008, -0/+17It seems there is an opening for some software that modifies colours for gaming apps in real-time. So you would buy your game and install it, then when you run it this app intercepts the colours and changes them appropriately to something you can distinguish. Profiles for each game could be made by the community or the game companies. This would be a great feature for graphics card manufacturers to produce. Should I patent it?
- scy1192, on 04/10/2008, -0/+16didn't know there were so many color blind people on Digg.
- Morasta, on 04/10/2008, -0/+14Dammit, I had to have my roomie look at that and tell me what it said. Nicely done.
- VinnieDaMac, on 04/10/2008, -2/+15Wow that sucks for that 8%.
- scrag10, on 04/10/2008, -0/+12The worst is when your playing a handheld and you don't know the battery is dying. Use blue LEDs please!
- endlessoul, on 04/11/2008, -0/+12Didja tell him about the clouds and bushes? Did you??
That's a ***** bombshell, right there. - yenik, on 04/30/2008, -0/+10Ironically, some forms of colorblindness make you a better sniper as you can detect traditional forms of camo designed for normal sight.
- fishermat33, on 04/10/2008, -2/+128 pecent is relatively common and who is up in arms. As a color blind gamer I find it annoying that some games become very difficult. It's certainly an annoyance, but I'm not "up in arms." And what does people saying ***** have to do with anything? Color blindness is a disability (not a hugely dehabilatating disability, but a disability none the less.) so what is it to you if game developers put in simple options to change colors of certain items to cater to such an audience? Did you get beat up by a gang of color blind people or something, or do you just feel like being a dick?
- dansmeek, on 04/10/2008, -0/+10i think he just felt like being a dick. or perhaps thought that the colorblind people for some reason dont go to digg
- Nastjuid, on 04/10/2008, -1/+11yeah.. sure I'm color blind, too... at least that's the excuse I'll use when I turn enemy skins to BRIGHT YELLOW just before a TWL match, or an event with a cash payout for first place. I've got a friend that really is color blind. I don't remember which colors appear different, but that sonofabitch will spot your character if it so much as breathes.
If the game isn't competitive, it wouldn't be hard to implement at all, but when you start talking about games that are part of MLG (Major League Gaming - yes, it's real), I think adding these options to some games would cause people to abuse the features.
$.02 - h4mx0r, on 04/10/2008, -1/+10I'm not colorblind, but I got a buddy who is. He enjoys guitar hero (colors don't matter, just the order of the keys), but I still remember when I showed him Audiosurf (non-mono mode) and he was like "WHAT? COLORS? GODDAMNIT." Hell, he even has trouble with Mono colored mode, because he's blind to green, so when the colored blocks change to green, they all look grey to him.
Peggle Extreme addressed the issues by assigning the various colors various symbols as well. - AlphaPrime, on 04/10/2008, -0/+8Being colorblind, this is a very good thing. It took me 3 months to beat Metroid Prime: Hunters because of one orange door that I thought was red so it never opened. I finally found it literally 20 hours later on the game clock. After that, I pretty much gave up on it because I was so sick of having to check every door again with each weapon.
Also, I barely can tell a difference between the photos in the article so that tells me its a fairly accurate depiction. - faultytext, on 04/10/2008, -2/+9Unfortunately, what a lot people seemed to have missed, due in part to the skewed description of the digg, is that 8% of gamers are not colorblind. The article stated that 8% of males are colorblind, which would more than likely mean that even less than 8% of gamers are colorblind. So, from a developers' standpoint, the question of whether or not to put in options to change certain colored elements within a game revolves more around how easy it would be to implement the changes and at what cost. It's unfortunate for some, but I can't possibly think of a single element purposefully included within a game simply based upon the desires of less than 8% of the market.
- SSCrow, on 04/10/2008, -0/+7I've seen many games such as GRAW which include a colorblind HUD for instance.
- reclocksworth, on 04/10/2008, -2/+9When playing First Person Shooters I generally have to rely on the movement of the enemy. It changes my entire tactic. Sometimes I'll run out into the open as self-bait, just so that I can get the spot on someone.
- KaiUno, on 04/11/2008, -0/+7Only to the chinese. It's because of all the squinting.
- davidrools, on 04/10/2008, -0/+6I had a f*ked up TV back in the day where half the screen had the colors all screwed up from a magnet getting too close. Whoever was on that side playing bust-a-move was toast.
- DaviDTC, on 04/10/2008, -0/+6http://www.forumammo.com/cpg/albums/userpics/10063 ...
- Koskun, on 04/10/2008, -0/+6I think there are a lot more people who are technically colorblind than 8% (using the amount from the article), it is that they can't see what actual red is, but are taught that certain shade is red, so they can adjust.
A friend of mine went for his color test when he was going to join the military, and it was there that he found out he is slightly color blind (according to the military). He was 23 years old at that point. - kylenstone, on 04/10/2008, -1/+6I myself am colorblind, and run into this issue all the time.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 04/10/2008, -2/+7I don't mean to be snooty but couldn't you just adjust the hue on your TV set?
- djdingo, on 04/10/2008, -1/+6Color blindness has to suck, but what about those people who can go into an seizure while playing video games? That has to be much worse.
- DaviDTC, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo as seen by someone with normal eyes and
by someone with Deuteranopia (a red-green color deficit)
Hmm, they look the same to me. - faultytext, on 04/11/2008, -1/+6Actually, the decrease in the percentage would be caused by the addition of female gamers. Since the article didn't provide information about colorblind females, it's impossible to tell exactly how the percentage would be affected. However, the article also stated that the 8% is an arguable figure, with some believing it to be as low as 4%. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter what the percentage is. The question still revolves around the same topics: How easy would it be to implement the necessary adjustment options? How much money will it cost? Is it worth the extra time/effort/money?
- gkrat, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5As a color blind gamer who has run into problems in the past, thank for this story. This is why i love ars.
also, i don't think that it's common enough for them to pander to us, but it's a good try :D - aywwts4, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5All my childhood it was the tall one and the fat one, I had no idea there were color differences.
The article is absolutely great in calling out NSMB, it is one of the worst color blind games of all time, Even though if you have 3 or 4 players You COULD play as Wario (bright yellow) or Yoshi (a friggin dinosaur) in two player mode you can Only play as mario or luigi, and while I could sort of play in some games by judging who was taller or shorter, they would regularly curl up while falling which would throw that out the window. I don't know if I ever won a game of multiplayer NSMB, I would regularly be playing, chasing my opponent getting ready to jump on his head, when for some reason he runs right off the side and into a pit! We both cheer... Then my friend laughs and calls me an idiot.
Another bad game is Oblivion, where the difference between 'free to take' and 'Your blood will run red, you cur' is the tint of red in the cursor. - MakiNavaja, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5I wish it were only as trivial as games, but that's just a small part of what we have to deal with. Graphs, charts, wire colorings, colored lights, color-coded maps... I can't tell you how frustrating it was to be tested in school and not know the answer simply because I couldn't tell if something was pink, purple, or blue (and then to be scoffed at because I was only supposed to have difficulties with red and green, right?)
- CrankyHippo, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5Lets hope they never have a bomb defuse mini game "Now cut the Red wire, not the Green wire. Or all the hostages will die"
- mywhitenoise, on 04/10/2008, -2/+7Yeah, that explains all the brown environments in todays games...
I love MGS a whole lot, but I really wish they'd add more color to the new one. - kru1e, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5I am pretty severely red / green colorblind and I have had a really *****-ass time in some puzzle missions
- Vade218, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5I'm a colorblind gamer and it can get pretty annoying. The minimap of GTA, the opposing faction in an online fps (like tfc), and don't even get me started on The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX's hidden "color dungeon" (that was just plain hell).
I wish developers would put an option in that would at least help colorblind gamers. Especially in FPSs, I just kinda have to guess and hope I don't kill my teammates. I get yelled at a lot on Counter-Strike Source : ( - metateck, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5Sorry, after being dugg down I realize that might sound mean. I was just writing out what that picture says.
- mywhitenoise, on 04/10/2008, -3/+8I would, that's pretty stupid business not to.
Say 1 million people wanted to buy your product, but 80,000 decided not to because it didn't meet their standards...that's a ***** of money you're missing out on. - Balath, on 04/10/2008, -0/+5oh ho ho! I see what you did there.
- hutchy, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4http://gri.gallaudet.edu/Demographics/deaf-US.php
'About 2 to 4 of every 1,000 people in the United States are "functionally deaf,"'
So thats 0.2-0.4% deaf compared to 8% colorblind - mikesol, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4If you're going to patent it, patent it and then release it for free with a promise to never sue. Then find a coder to code up a bit of sample code, and test it on some colourblind people (should be easy enough to find them via social networking). If it makes a difference, put it to the manufacturers, optionally with a petition.
- alexforcefive, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4should we tell him? *****, I feel bad about this. I'm very very serious - only click this link if you want your childhood to be RUINED
are you sure?
http://digg.com/nintendo/Ever_Noticed_This_While_P ... - inactive, on 04/10/2008, -0/+4That's funny, after reading that I was thinking Hexic too. I had to flip on that feature. The symbols take longer to process than colors though, my only complaint.
- endlessoul, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4***** you! It's an OVAL.
- VanD, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Yeah, 8% of us
- Zaeboes, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4Purple is over-rated. You're not missing much.
- EvilJelloMan, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4wait, what about the clouds and bushes??
