- LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9Blowing on the carts isn't always the best thing to be doing. Unless you've got problem with hair or something.
If the pins on the NES carts are in good shape, the problem is usually failed or failing pins in the NES itself. You can order replacements from places like eBay or MCM Electronics. Replacing the bad connectors is as simple as taking the NES apart and popping the old cart connectors off.
Also, cleaning the pins with a cotton swap and alcohol (not beer) will alleviate most issues involving "blowing" into the cart. Be careful about how much cleaning fluid you use since you want to dry the cart out in a reasonable amount of time. - flyindutchman, on 10/12/2007, -7/+15Now why would you take the classic design of the NES and replace it with the horrid PS2 design?
However, I gotta digg it for a good job replicating the PS2 design! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -11/+19If you don't know the answer to that, what are you doing here? This is a sweet mod btw.
- joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9dmron, its original in the regard to other NES mods
- Sandwiches_Time, on 10/12/2007, -6/+13Why are people giving a "thumbs down" digg to comments who don't like it?
Aren't people allowed to have their opinion?
Is that what digg's comment system has become? If you don't like something, you're going to get a thumbs down vote? If so, that's really stupid.
I personally think it looks dumb. And I'll probably get a bunch of negative votes. - DannyX0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2006/02/nestation-pictures.html
more pics - gamabunta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Blowing on the cart actually rusts the contacts which will eventually leave your game in worse shape over time. It was a design flaw in the original NES for the cart deck when you pushed it down it bent the contacts out of shape. This is why there was such a radical design change in the value priced NES towards the end of its life cycle. Opening the system and manually bending the contacts back into position is alot better than blowing onto your cartridges, but hey, to each his own.
- djdole, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Because old-school NES is cool.
The same reason they brought back Ninja-Turtle action figures, My Monster, Moon-Shoes, Pogo hopper, Yoyo-Ball etc. People like reminiscing about their youth.
Personally I just use my PVR with MAME and a USB controller to get my old-school game fix, but never the less, this post definitely gets geeky mod points.
Oh...and because people will buy ANYTHING on eBay. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9I was gonna anti-digg this, but I will tell you why you would want this.
Due to the fact that the NES Carts as they go older needed some work booting up.
Tip the NES on it's side may improve the ability for the game to load.
And blowing on the Cart is always helpful as well. - LiquidPenguin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5gamabunta, that's not entirely true. The contacts on most cartridges are usually copper, so they don't exactly rust, they oxidize (yes, I know they're the same thing. Pay attention to the nuance.). That oxidization can be cleaned with a soft pink eraser, though the process requires you take the cartridge apart to avoid the risk of destroying the thin traces.
However, if the contacts are nickel, then you've got a problem. I don't remember if any NES carts have nickel contacts or if the original contacts on the console are nickel. I *think* they're copper, but don't quote me on that. - rafgar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Heh, I love my classic games. I play them on emulators now (my NES died tragiclly years ago). True, it doesn't get any points for originality, but it still looks good IMHO. No real advantage to putting it on it's side though. The footprint's probably about the same as before once you figure in that base.
- falcon707, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5But why? =( The original system is iconic. Why change it?
- n3tfury, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4not ugly by any means. i don't care for "defacing" of a Nintendo console with a Sony "skin", but to each his own. either way, the guy did a fantastic job. dugg for effort.
- elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2P.S. -- my sega saturn can be seen in my rig here:
http://homepage.mac.com/mikemunson/pics/rig.jpg
it's the japanese mainboard & top shell, inside US bottom shell. added a drive access light, and switched the power LED to blue. check out the bevel job on the access LED (it's the one to the right of the eject button)
http://homepage.mac.com/mikemunson/pics/saturn_led.jpg - peruytu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4What's the point? Ugly indeed.
What a waste of a good mini-itx casing. - elroy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2RACKETBOY IS COOL! He hooked me up with my mod chip for my Sega Saturn. Yes, the Saturn is worth modding. Lots of cool Japanese games. ^_^
- Vankalker, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5Pretty ugly if you ask me.
- craigosbourne, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4i dont like the look of it, however i credit the guy for doing it, its a challenge. it reminds me of the days of mini itx
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeah, its original compared to other NES mods. But for me, it kinda kills the spirit of the NES. He could have at least used a broken NES.
- chiefcrazytalk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I would rather see him make the Nintendo look like an Atari 2600
- lilazndrumrboy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2lol.......i thot they jsut popped the innards of an NES and stuck it in the PS2 case for a sec......but the case looks great so digg............
- TheSource, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Isn't the point of the new comment system so that you could've posted this reply as a reply to luminares post? No point in making a new post in order to reply to a previous post.
- BasouKazuma, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Looks kinda cool. The original NES design isnt much to look at, so at least the modder made it flashy.
- Battlecry, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1See, that's what I'm thinking too. "Wow. He spray painted the thing. That's some mod."
- joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The guy that did this mod also did this mini Sega Genesis:
http://digg.com/gaming/Sega_Genesis_Mini-Sized_-_Simple_Yet_Cool_Hack - Enchirito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1the thing doesn't look half bad sitting flat. But standing upright it looks terrible IMO.
- Dgen_X, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1another good idea that just didn't work out...
it just looks weird... - joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1did you even look at it? it's more than a paint job.
He had to carve out the letters and put LEDs in - afraydocurado, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1No offense but that is a very ugly mod, and it's just to wide to look like a "sleek and modern ps2". Like D14BL0 said, this is no where near original.
- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1OMG, that poor NES...
- wtfunkymonkey, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Wow. Okay. They did a fair job, I suppose. But it's so gawdawful ugly... The size and shape is not even similar enough to do this mod with. It just doesn't look right at all.
And it may just be me here, but I'm rather fond of the classic NES design. I'm more likely to digg a ps2 modded to look like an NES than vice versa. - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Original design? How is taking Sony's design "original"?
And this isn't much of a mod. It's a paintjob. - Noloco, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Sigh my Nes systems never worked well. I found a Top loader for three dollars two years ago and have that still. It works like a charm. But I still prefer my emulators. I don't know where my old NES went, but I had two. Well I think taking a Nes and cloning it to look like PS2 isn't to bad. It looks cool, but kinda annoys me to see that it's not enough some of you think Ps is better, but now you want to convert one of the greatest consoles to imitate that wait and load nonsense ? Personally I think Ps2 has some good games. Im not denying that, but to disgrace Nintendo by emulating its system to look like Ps bleh. Oh well. Good job done.
- bigteebo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I wonder if hardware bootleggers are going to get an idea from this and start selling them as PS2s.
- joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -9/+10lumiras,
Some people just like classic systems and/or being creative with them. - maram500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah it looks cool and all--heck it even looks sort of like a PS2--but what we really have to complement here is that the thing is STILL WORKING. It's been twenty-plus years since the console was released, and apparently this thing still works. All my cartridges and the console itself quit on my round about 1999, when I *finally* got a Nintendo 64. What a waste of money that was... Anyway, my hat is off to anyone whose NES still works. Myself, I like my emulators, thanks. I like this... Cool effects, too...
- bdr529, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i dont see why someone would want to do that
- StealthTomato, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5Butt. Ugly.
Why not just leave the NES how it was, or mod it some other way? - Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I just love all the rose colored memories everyone has of the ol' NES. Believe me when you have one and hook it up in your living room and play it, the nostalgia goes away in a hurry.
Mod a Gamecube or XBox and run a NES emulator. No better way to play old NES games I tell ya. - pezz453, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Ditto. Ugly.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1it was either blow in the carts or not play
I chose to blow. - st3v, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2It is sad how everyone is ruining all their classic NES consoles. Sooner or later, an NES in good shape will be hard to come by. I still have the NES I got as a child in good shape, and I will keep it that way.
- Ignorant, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1The old black paint mod... :/
- YakkSoho, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The whole point of my 8bit is that I hate PS2
no digg T ^ T - WWWWolf, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, this is an old idea:
http://www.nesretro.com/*****/trent67nes.html
This new adaptation was a little bit more stylish and glittery though =) - RobLoach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Emulators for PS2:
http://www.zophar.net/consoles/ps2.html - cokebottletuque, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3that's still fugly if you really wanted to do this properly you would get a broken PS2 and shoehorn the nes guts in it. or failing that use a Nintendo on a chip. you would either have to mod the controllers to use the original PS2 connectors or get some spare nes ports installed. personally i would wire up a Little converter so you could use PS2 controllers on the sucker. both formats are well documented and you would just need to program a cheap atmel chip to do the job properly.
- Brilhasti, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1Most original idea? But it's based of another design? Sure, it's cool, but I don't think we can call it 'original'.
- xslutx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1he did a pretty good job with it, but i think it'd be a lot cooler to mod a PS2 into an NES box.
- antoniojvr, on 10/12/2007, -8/+6I agree, it's ugly. But still, looks like a fun thing to try :)
