Castlevania to break Live Arcade size limit
gamespot.com — Castlevania Sympony of the Night is to be over 50 megs on the 360. Does that mean the 360 will get larger downloads like the ps3? Lets hope so
- 524 diggs
- digg it
- N1tro, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4The 50 meg limit is just odd since everything you download these days are over 100+megs. I could see if they wanted to save on bandwidth but thats not the case they have demos that break the 50 meg limit like no other, can anyone say superman (1gig+)
- SPARTACVS, on 10/12/2007, -1/+25Bandwidth? The videos on the Marketplace are like 10x that big. Bandwidth isn't a concern. They just want you to be able to fit them on a 64mb memory card.
- hansblix, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Forget about the size limit. I just want to download it!
- MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2good. The limit was silly.
- fatadamblog, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Yea I agree 50MB limit for Live arcade titles is rather limited, Your not going to see much improvement on the original titles unless the development team fit it all in.
When Microsoft releases the bigger Hard Drive I think you will see this size increase dramatically. - wild, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Read the article, its only just over. Still under 64mb.
- zaid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2^ nope, not even the demo will fit in under 64 megs. Read it again.

- khyberkitsune, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I say damn right. Al these limitations currently implemented in hardware need to go away. I don't own one but I've got a few pals that do, and I've put it through what I could think of as a tech guy. Man, I thought it was okay in all honesty, but not that good. I was so hyped, and was let down a few bits.
If this fixes a few of those critical woes of mine (not all, but the couple of biggest ones, mainly concerning file sizes,) then I'd be happy to get one, in the next gen or so. Then splurge all the money saved then on games that I'd see real interest in (as in I'd play over and over again, like I do Enemy Territory on the PC.) - Zeush8su, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4But will it fit on the new memory cards that are coming out? I believe they were going to be 128mb memory cards.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5WHY is the memory card 64megs anyway in an era when you can get 2gigs of high quality flash media for around $40?
WHY doesn't Microsoft just let you use a damn USB flash drive for save data/demos as well instead of just audio and video? The PS3 and Wii have no problems letting you use a SD card, to some extent.
There would be no need for the 50meg limit if these were in place. - kilodelta, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1who buys memory cards anymore?

- PurpleSfinx, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Ok it deleted most of my comment and left a single link which was not even that important to what I was saying. Ah well. I basically linked that site ^^ and said that good games can be made small, but that if making it >50MB makes it better they should go ahead.
- Lazyboy0172, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3i hope it does not, or if the 50mb does die, i hope its just a slightly smaller size being forced. I hated downloading things on PS3. lemmings was like 700mb. I just want to press download and start playing
- tankexmortis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Honestly, SoTN is the biggest reason I want a 360 now. Now if they can just get Jet Set Radio Future running on it I might actually pick one up.
- Desolite, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2did you throw out your ps1 (or ps2)? just play it on there.
its in my top 10 games of all time. - concertina, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Or emulate it. C:SOTN plays great under epsxe - or at least it used to two years ago. Haven't played it recently.

- elsux0r, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Microsoft has stated that the limit is not a hard-and-fast cap, so much as it is a suggested file size. The limit is there so that developers releasing software on Live Arcade can release a download that people can download 'within a few minutes' and start playing.
Microsoft has said there will be exceptions to that 50MB rule; SotN just happens to be the first.- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1So then why was Robo-blitz compressed, recompressed, and then compressed again, to just barely fit under the 50mb limit?
- Jaymoon, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Not to be skeptical or anything, but the extra space is probably for junk data anyway. Some 20 minute cutscene that easily could have been summed up in 2 minutes, special effects on the credits, some huge loooong introduction, etc.
This does kind of suck for developers such as the ones who created Robo-Blitz, and spent every last second compressing that thing down to just under 50mb. Then some big developer comes along, and just bends the rules without even trying.
So if some future developer comes along with a 200mb arcade game, and says that "Well if we cut out 150mb, it will seriously affect the 'gamers experience'", would Microsoft do anything about it? This just goes to show that if one developer can bypass the rules, then anyone can. As long as they keep the 'gamers experience' in mind.- Edge06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0I was always surprised by the arbitrary 50MB cap imposed by MS (yes I realise it's due to the size of memory cards) but most people bought the Premium 360, why screw the majority because of the people who don't have the hard drive (just my 2p worth, adjusted for inflation).
- atma, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually, there are almost no cutscenes in SotN whatsoever. Maybe a total of 2 minutes worth, excluding the credits. The main reason it's so large is that there is a full hour of CD-quality music and voice acting which it would be a shame to get rid of. Well, it would be a shame to get rid of the music at least. In any case, even with a good codec, music can only get so small. And I'm not sure I would want to play SotN without its amazing soundtrack.
- Mathewh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2regardless, i am excited about this game!
- daridave, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2That game is worth every megabyte. So... good. Gimme. now!!!
- badbox, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0What does XBL cap your speed at?
On my desktop, I can download 50 megs in well under a minute, but on XBL it takes a few minutes.
Wondering why they do this.. - DustoMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Maybe Castlevania is going to be timed to be released with the 256MB memory card?
- Zero2aHero, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Someone from Kotaku looked at the game size when the MS people weren't around, and the build they have at CES is 97mb.
- patch6, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2It's an awesome game. Just don't get the crissaegrim sword, you'll kill the challenge.
