Canadian retail chain site warns that the 360 Elite may kill Sarah Connor
futureshop.ca — Future Shop is a Canadian national electronics chain exactly like Best Buy (though we have them, too). Looks like someone got bored in writing up the Xbox 360 Elite description on their site, as it contains a nod to a certain 1984 sci-fi movie starring a certain Governator. Beware if your Elite comes with greetings from Skynet.

- pagit, on 10/12/2007, -4/+54All 121 Future Shop stores are owned by BB.
I never understood why they opened (built) a Futureshop right beside the BB in Surrey B.C.
The only difference is company colours - the prices are exactly the same as well as the service: crappy.

Just make an inane comment and link to your blog as your "signature".
That will get you dugg DOWN - MatttK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+21@pagit: I find the average person thinks Futureshop is Canadian-owned, so they will shop there, rather than give business to the well-known American chain, Best Buy. Upon hearing that Best Buy owns Futureshop, people are usually really disappointed.
- Cam_86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@pagit
They did the same thing in Winnipeg. The biggest Futureshop(st james) is on the same block as the biggest Bestbuy. In fact theres only little crafts store between them. The REALLY weird thing is, they built that futureshop AFTER bestbuy bought futureshop. - digid, on 10/12/2007, -2/+11"Bring on the PWN4G3" -from the article
- imcquill, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9They always put the Best Buys right beside the Future Shops on purpose.... it's like that almost everywhere. They want everyone to go to that 'electronic section' of town, and 'compare prices'. Most people don't know they are owned by the same people.
- PocketFluff, on 10/12/2007, -6/+0sorry macmcrae, today is opposite day.
- TrevorBradley, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5When Best Buy bought out Future Shop, there were two stores right next to each other in Coquitlam. They found they made *more* money than at individual locations, as the two stores would play off each other, hosting sales that the other one wouldn't have. End result, *everyone* buys from either Future Shop or Best Buy now.
Think of it as the same store in two separate buildings.
And I work very close to that new Surrey, BC FutureShop and Best Buy combo. - imcquill, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1skip Future Shop and Best Buy and go to Costco.
- burke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"The biggest Futureshop(st james) is on the same block as the biggest Bestbuy. In fact theres only little crafts store between them."
Well, the craft store and an Old Navy, but still; it's bizarre. - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"I never understood why they opened (built) a Futureshop right beside the BB in Surrey B.C."
Here, it's the opposite. FutureShop's were all over the place, now they have Best buy's next to them, everywhere.
Want to know why? Stupid phenomenom known as "brand loyalty", which also applies to stores. FutureShop was initially what you know BestBuy for, but in Quebec. BestBuy was seen as the "american big brother in the states" here in Montreal, a couple of years ago.
Now we have both and some people swear by FS, others do by BB... funny thing is they're absolutely NOT transparent about being the same company -- in fact, when I bought my Logitech G15 keyboard at FutureShop around a year ago, IT HAD A BEST BUY PRICE TAG ON IT. Hilarious...
Anyway -- it means double the ammount of weekly rebates, the only difference is you have to look at two places instead of one. - murder1, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I usually head into Best Buy because the staff seem to bother me less. Without the motivation of a commission they seem to wait to be asked for help.
- drspacemonkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I worked at Future Shop before the buyout, and remained friends with a guy who stayed there until after the buyout happened. When word got around that the new boss (BB) was building a 'competing' store less than a 5 minute drive away, people got justifiably nervous. The way the then-store-manager explained to his staff that it was a tactic that was being tested. The theory was that people, not knowing that the two stores were owned by the same company, would decide "Hey, I need to buy product X - I'll go to Future Shop and Best Buy since they're so close, and see which is cheaper". It turned out that the theory was right, and the store revenues more than doubled at Future Shop, and Best Buy was supposedly doing approximately the same numbers. As much as I hate Best Buy, it was a brilliant move.
Since then, I've heard of Future Shop and Best Buy stores sharing the same parking lot. - astrosmash, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3My first Interac purchase was at a Future Shop, back in '94 when Interac was initially rolled out. I bought a 10-pack of blank cassettes for the hell of it. It was like they were free.
What's strange is that Best Buy and Future Shop sales are often not in sync, so they'll have different prices for the same product and you actually have to comparison shop between the two, which is just a pain in ass. I usually stay away from both of them these days.
Meanwhile, the once-great A&B Sound falls further and further from grace. - Skavenblight, on 10/12/2007, -7/+0Wow, I had no idea FutureShop was American. :(
Still, you have to admit that's a brillant business move from them, building two stores owned by the same company side by side.
Anyway, I can't see the Terminator reference in the description, it seems it was removed. - kinseyincanada, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2there is a small difference between the two, at a Futureshop the retailers work on commission but at Best Buy they dont.
- Guspaz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Walk through the printer section in a FutureShop in Montreal. You'll see BestBuy shipping labels on all of them.
Of course, this particular futureshop is across the street from a BestBuy. But they have competing sales and honour each other's pricing, so it's sometimes to our advantage.
- Sil369, on 10/12/2007, -4/+14That's certainly odd. I wonder if you get a discount if you notify the sales-person 'bout it.
Btw, Future Shop is owned by the same ppl who own Best Buy if I am not mistaken.- cyberwarriorx, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9Yes they are. Basically the main difference between the two retail chains is that Future Shop does sales on commission, where as Best Buy is non-commission. Also I know starting around a year ago they were trying to go a bit further and split the product lines they sold so that they wouldn't be in direct competition with each other. In all honesty though, I've always found Future Shop more appealing.
- Haasmosis, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6Yes. Best Buy owns Future Shop. They maintain a dual brand strategy in Canada.
- gcnaddict, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Future Shop stores operate as a division of Burnaby-based Best Buy Canada Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Best Buy Co., Inc. (NYSE:BBY)."
http://www.futureshop.ca/companyinfo/content/default.asp?s_page=info - Cerpin_Taxt, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Despite the commission sales at Future Shop, I still get better service at Best Buy... It all comes down to the staff, I guess.

I'm glad they're ignoring T3 for that TV show (its apparently taking place after T2).
T3 wasnt written or directed by Cameron and was incredibly poor.
I just imagine that it never existed.

- chieferer, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1@shirosamuri
Umm... since Canadian dollars are worth about 85% of a US dollar, wouldn't the price be higher? 549CAD is worth approx 477USD. Sweet price - abid786, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6@Scheissen
It is 0.86911 cents US for a Canadian dollar as of right now. Not too weak :| - shirosamurai, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@chieferer
That's exactly what it's supposed to be, mate. The official price for the 360 Elite is USD $479.99.

$549 is Canadian. Why don't you check how much the PS3 costs in Canadian Dollars. - evlpuppy, on 10/12/2007, -26/+5I actually thought there was some signs of intelligent life on Digg. Then it dawned on me, this place is mostly populated by children, adolescents or virgins living in their parents basements. What else could explain the fact that at a minimum at least 1/4 of all the top articles are some variant on gaming counsels or the iphone? Geez, I would love for just one blessed bloody single day a post dealing with the Wii, 360 or PS3 NOT appear in the top posts. Just once, is that all you people ever think about? Go play outside, see the bright glowing orange globe that normal people call the Sun, learn a musical instrument, take up cooking, learn who your Congressman is, anything just put down the damn Wiimote and stop bitching about Sony or Microsoft marketing strategy for once. Like Shatner said on SNL "Get a Life".
- KyleMistry, on 10/12/2007, -3/+16What, did a nerd beat you up in high school when you tried to take their lunch money?
- morepinklemons, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6First of all, it scares me that you care so much about what other people do when it has no effect on you. Second, your saying gamers are immature/stupid/have no life. Thanks for the generalization. Also, why is a cooking class, or playing an instrument better than playing video games...I was under the impression that people do those things because they ENJOY them. So some people enjoy playing video games more, again, why should you care? (Congressman of my district: Judy Biggert. Oh, and I do play an instrument.)
- tech42er, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Don't feed the troll.
- JoeMittler, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1BestBuy bought futureshop 5 yrs ago. I applied at BB and during the interview i got the vibe that they were coming to canada to see who can do better. And I guess they have found both to be very profitable and have decided to just stay. That's just my take anyway. And personally I like BB over futureshop cause @ futureshop they are like hording you with can i help you's and it just makes you wanna leave and go somewhere else... That and BB is closer :D
- ufia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8A Sarah Connor joke on Future Shop, something tells me the webmaster over there is a Fark reader.
- TroubleInMind, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1They had Future Shop here (Seattle area) for a while. Before Best Buy rolled in. When Best Buy and Circuit City arrived, Future Shop and The Good Guys folded tents. Computer City hung in there for a while but is now closing up too.

And did you see that DAM PRICE -Our price: $549.99!!! So much for 479.99 !!! - CompanyMan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0The prices at BestBuy and Futureshop only vaary between 10 to 15 dollars mark up or mark down. It's owned my BestBuy America but it's a market share. Think of it as WWE Wrestling..Vince split the brands into 2 separate divisions. WWE RAW and WWE Smack-down. He wants both under 1 banner (WWE) but also to operate and make money separately as an individual product. But they both help each other in revenue coming Pay-Per View time.
When sales are going on at FutureShop, Bestbuy stays their prices. And vice a versa. Cause like BestBuy knows not all knows FS isn't Canadian anymore.
It's complicated but overall BestBuy will be closing and turning al Futureshops into BestBuy by 2009/2010 which may be faster than what people think.
It's all part the end deal proceedings. American BesBuy will be the American Walmart of Canadian Shopping. So stores like Zellers, Peoples, Sears, Futureshop, Staples are all going to take a big hit in the next few years. - antifreeze11, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2viral marketing. ***** this *****.

- Turbojugend27, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0@imcquill "skip Future Shop and Best Buy and go to Costco."
Yeah cause I would love to buy electronics from there, especially TVs, that the actually manufacture on the box don't even say they make. I remember seeing a Pioneer plasma there one day, I jotted the make down, and went home to do some research (you think they know anything there about them?)
Low and behold, a trip to the website and a call to Pioneer, they had no idea what model I was talking about and they assured me they don't make it.
Costco builds and re brands garbage electronics with real good names like Pioneer etc.
@ Companyman - I would like to know where you get your information from? In fact new Futureshops are being built right now, AND are planning on being built in the States around 2009, so you are greatly misinformed. - blenky119, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Although i have no idea what future shop or best buy is as i live in Britain i thought i would make a comment that the xbox 360 elite looks a large waste of money to me.
