- Duston, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I guess the answer to the question should be, "I hope so." If a game has a story you are that connected with then it was well worth the $50. Just like a good movie that draws you into a story part of the fun of a video game is that if done properly the plot will pull you along by your emotions. Like someone said above, KOTOR can make you feel like the White Knight. (or the dark lord for that matter)
That is part of the reason we play them. For the emotional response. - santiago1, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1 I wish they would add a +2 funny mod. Some funny comments here!
- brandonhines, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I find in interesting that his friend that is only now playing a 8 year old RPG uses the character's Japanese name.
- Lewisham, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Aeris was a bitter pill to swallow. I also found the end of Grim Fandango tough; it was a genuine moment of passing for both Manny and myself.
To all those people who posted childish playground bully comments: It's a shame you are so unconfident in your sexuality/emotional ability, it sucks that you can't connect with games and other things. You're really missing something. - fudgebrown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1KOTOR - i felt like a hero.
- Buckler, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I admit I shed a tear the first time I played Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. I'd been replaying the Omaha Beach segment over and over, trying to get to the beachhead. I took a break, and noticed the date: June 6th. Then I reflected on all the poor SOB's who only got one chance to make it, and didn't.
- FriedGeek, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1When I look back on how much time I spent playing City of Heroes, I cry.
- aliasunknown, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I would hope video games created a larger emotional impact than other forms of entertainment, like movies and books. In a game one can actually influence the main characters, becoming attached to them. I don't think graphics really have as much to do with this part of the experience as much as the user's own ability to connect with characters (which can occur through other means such as similar experiences, age, etc).
Ok, I should stop before I post a truly lengthy post. - heartless_, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My two emotional moments in gaming...
1. FF7 with Aeris got the sword. It didn't make me want to cry... more a sad passing. I honestly felt different after that moment in the game.
2. FF9 at the end when Zidane comes back and Dagger is running through the crowd for him. FF9 is still one of my favorite FF's.
No other games really have done anything to my emotions, but I have never gotten attached to any games outside of the FF series. I play MMORPGs religously, but I don't feel some sort of attachment to them emotionally... other than they tend to piss me off.
To me a good story is a good story. Book, game, or movie... it doesn't matter. They all catch me equally. - Seventus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think it makes the game worthwhile to play if the story line, and character relationship is strong enough to bring a full array of emotions into it. Everyone tends to hate or love a particular character, but to be invoke tears, or a giddy laugh of joy after events just shows that a story was very well written. I think some of the story lines in the past few years have been lacking to catch up with graphics, but the good game makers really know how to get the stories and characters that snare in their audience. I've had my share of weepy moments from games that I've felt really connected with.
- Morph_Ball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Heh, AT Sephiroth, not OF Sephiroth. My bad~
- markperia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Aerith's death was quite emotional. Add to the fact that i spent so much time getting her level up.
- Morph_Ball, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didn't cry when Aerith died. I got pissed off of Sephiroth.
- bnoble, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes, yes it can. But it shouldn't. And if it does, you should go the way of Aerith yer damn self.
- ocanica, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Aeris' death was a real "lump in your throat" moment but the battle afterwards was sweet :)
- doomsquirrel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FF7 was a great plot - because she died. I was so shocked when she died, I was sure she was going to come back later as a supa-healer-ghost-goddess or something, and when she didn't, I was like: Wow. This isn't so Disney-fied anymore. It made you stop short and reconsider what you thought about those types of games, and where they could take you.
- billpoly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Digg the original...
http://www.digg.com/gaming/Can_a_Game_Make_You_Cry_ - zediker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It never made me cry, probably because someone spoiled it for me, because I saw the scene before I had really experienced the game. Would I have cried if things were different? I dunno.
- tehLazyPirate, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Kingdom Hearts...
best. game. ever. imo... plenty of sad moments... expecially having to watch the game end
;_; - streetracer2646, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cried after I realized I wasted 20 min of my time reading about other guys crying.

ahaha true, didn't cry when it happened, just felt weird and really pissed off - kaka, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i cried during "A Boy & His Blob" on NES.
- driedwater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cried after I realized I wasted 20 min of my time reading about other guys crying.
- nugget, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cried in FFVII, and thats the only game I cried in. Although Other games did make me sad
- baltakatei, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0My eyes watered up in Final Fantasy VI when Celes jumped off the cliff into the sea with Aria di Mezzo Carattere playing in the background... And those were only 12x24 sprites!
- vperez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Actually the most memorable moment for me in FF7 was when I was fighting Sephiroth and he started doing that Super Nova move a few times. Went and fixed myself a beverage and my bro was in the kitchen and asked me if I'd beaten it. Told him I was still playing it and it wasn't paused. :p
- Darthpip, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cried pretty hard when I played a lot of the Star Wars games. I realized that I blew $50 bucks for a bucketload of *****. Oh did the fountains rain down on those unglorious days.
- turgiddahlia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Every time one of my units is destroyed in 'Command & Conquer', a little part of me dies. I also cried at the end of the film 'Short Circuit'. But THAT'S IT.
- Cheirdal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Of course a game can make you cry. If you're an 8 year old mentally slow child, that is.
- Dabisu, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Some people haven't played the game yet, like some of my friends who I told them to play it so they can watch Advent Children. Also, she wasn't viciously murdered, she's killed pretty peacefully, she's not diced into pieces, but that whole scene was pretty sad.
- Namco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm not a fag or anything, but I was a bit upset at the end of Revenge of Shinobi (Super Shinobi to you Japanese playas), when I didn't save the girl at the end in time.
Also, I cried at the end of 1942. Playing for hours and hours, over a hundred levels to get that craptacular "Congratulation" ending. - BiggusCattus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have to say the ending to Grim Fandango where they are leaving the
land of the dead and Glottis cant go with them definitely made me choke up. Max Payne, Call of Duty, definitely some heavy momnets but no boo-hoo. - redsrule2500, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I remember almost crying in OoT.
- YourTechSupport, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I've only ever started to tear up when I was having trouble playing Goldeneye, was like thirty seconds from finally getting out the Bunker, had to pause it to take out the trash, and came back to find my sister had not only took over the TV, but had turned off the n64.
No, video games don't inspire violence, stupid siblings to. - foomojive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Robotron was a tear-jerker for me...
- metalaaron, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"when I took my first ride on a flying Gryphon in World of Warcraft, I dragged my wife over to the screen to show off the magnificent, sprawling forests below."
i remember my first time, too ;) - Deviant_Tech, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ok, FFVII was good and all. But I guess I was having a hard time getting into it because the only thing I thought when Aries died was "Damn... and I spent all that time leveling her!"
- vperez, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I wouldn't say she was viciously murdered. I mean it was a polygonal sword going threw her polygonal torso w/o any wound or blood. Viciously makes me think chopped up into little pieces or something. (Maybe I've played too many video games :p) I thought the ending of FFX was sadder personally, though I've yet to have a video game make me cry.
- SweetsGreen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I'm still messed up from Metroid when Samus took off her helmet and I relized that I'd been playing a girl for the past month......
What a cruel trick to play on a little kid. - Zantesukin, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0What about Zelda? That was a touching game.
- dougr33d, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yeah, I didn't cry, I just had something in my eye, damnit :-P
It was saddening to see Aeris and Zack in Advent Children. Also, the song "Eyes On Me" isn't sad, just very `nostalgic'. Goddamnit, now I feel like I have to play FFVII and FFVIII again :-( - hater2win, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cried at the end of Metal Gear Solid 3, what a great ending to a video game. How fitting and beautiful it was, i shed a few tears. ;(
Signed,
Comfortable With His Manhood - Marfanity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I cried the first time I played GTA3. It was so sad when I beat that old lady to death and robbed her.
- SysErr, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Final Fantasy 7 was awesome. I loved that game. The death of Aeris was a very touching moment.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0FF7 kinda sucked, and I truly laughed my ass off when Aeris died, but the scene in FF6 where Locke resurrects his girlfriend got to me. That, and pretty much all of Xenogears.
- lyricaz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Games that made me or others in my home sad or upset:
1. Phantasy Star IV
2. Wild Arms
3. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (because of delay)
4. World of Warcraft (because we've lost all our friends since we can't stop playing it) - foomojive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Dude I cried like a baby when Cid died in Final Fantasy IV (II U.S. version).
- PunkFenixJT, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I didnt cry when Aeris got the sword in FFVII...i did get slightly misty eyed at parts of Advent Children though that featured her.
Other than that, the end of FFX got to me as well. Really showed how Tidus had evolved from a cocky annoyin jerk at the beginning to this bittersweet goodbye.
the only other time i got teary was when I dodged 199 lightning bolts in the thunder plains and messed up on #200!!!! BAH!!! -
