Would it be even possible for Devs to go back to old games and implement achievements for PS3 versions? Could they even be bothered to do so? It seems it would only happen on new games after an achievements system is implemented, Sony left this copycat venture a little late.
I'd like for Sony to work out something like this, but please work on in game XMB first. It has been over a year now and I STILL have to quit a game just to check messages and start up a chat. Cross game communication utilities are MS' strongest point over Sony right now and I wish Sony would get serious about catching up.
IF sony implemented "achievements" to their games it would be a total afterthought and wouldn't catch on to be a craze as much as the 360 gamers like it to be.
And despite what a lot of haters think, achievements don't ruin games, unless you are stuck in a multiplayer match with a bunch of gamers who are working on some. In that case you can always just leave the game within seconds and get another one going.
I love playing games and unlocking them with the Date stamp on it, I enjoy seeing a history of what I was doing while playing games. I could care less for the points, I just go for the Achievements themselves.
Sony is working on their Home virtual world, and from nearly the same time that the PS3 was released, there was a trailer for Home showing a trophy room filled with virtual objects representing achievements. This is not an afterthough or copying some other system, Sony is coming out with a new concept for game consoles. Also most devs, despite releasing games before Home, have implemented the ability to tie in their in-game achievements with the Home system as soon as its released. Sony is really working on a next-gen system for achievements while it keeps looking like Microsoft did nothing more then beef up the Xbox specs and polished up their Live network, I am finding more and more that the Xbox360 is not a real next-gen system, its like Xbox 1.5. All Microsoft did was release a game console first, but its been Sony and Nintendo that showed any real iniciative to offer anything new to the gaming experience, which is why they took a year longer before releasing their systems.
Ratchet and Clank and Resistance both have "Skill Points" which show progress in doing things in game. I wouldn't be surprise if when Home is released that people who have all the skill points in R&C don't have a statue of the characters in their trophy room.
Try cloning the store while you are at it. I'm sick of going into the Playstation Store to download demos and videos and having to navigate through what feels like it is basically a webpage.
i really hate the phrase "next-gen"... it's like "web 2.0" - yet another buzz phrase that people can throw around, bastardize, and redefine again and again in the name of hype. /rant
I really don't want achievements and I don't even get what the big deal is. They don't interest me in the slightest. I've played games for 15 years without them and I don't need them now.
Uncharted has it's own achievement system, but it's not the same as the xbox where you can go online and see what you've done with time stamps and all that. That said it should be interesting to see what home does have to offer once released. It will also be interesting to see if PSN remains free once home is released. And will PSN become as online accessible as Xbox Live?
I've avoided World of Warcraft, crack, and nicotine all because I'm highly susceptible to addictive behaviors. You know, things where I get minute rewards after going through turmoil. I know I'm an idiot for this, but honestly, it is hard for me to play games that don't have achievements (think Super Mario Galaxy) because I don't feel rewarded. I'm missing out on some great experiences because of this mentality and I understand that.
I understand that achievements aren't worth anything and in fact, I have only ever gotten one thing for getting achievements which was a free download of the Contra remake on Xbox Live.
I guess I want all games to have achievements or none of them to.
I enjoy the achievements a great deal. It adds life to games I would have otherwise abandoned. I have a ps3 and 360. If the game is a multiplatform game, I'm getting the 360 version strictly due to achievements. I get exclusives for the ps3 only.
To all PS3 Only owners who find the idea of achievements stupid: They seriously add another layer of fun to certain games, for example I would have never gone back and played COD2 on veteran if there were no acheivements in doing so and I had a gread deal more fun with that game on veteran then I did on normal. If they are implemented propery they really get you do try stuff you might otherwise not... As an owner of all 3 consoles I would gladly welcome achievements to my PS3 as I find a big reason for playing xbox games sometimes is that added bonus
I wish MS could've done something worthwhile with achievements. I love playing games and getting achievements. But its meaningless. They should translate it into free stuff for games.
Get 500 points in Forza can get a set of free downloadable cars, tracks etc.
Get 1000 points in Forza and get a free arcade game etc. etc. etc.
You should have the option to buy them separately too, yes, but make it free with achievements so we have a desire to play more giving MS more gamers for its console.
I also enjoy the achievements a lot. I do think they add a lot of life to the games and it can also give some kind of proof of your bragging rights. I'm purchasing a PS3 very soon and I already have a 360, Wii, Playstation 2, and DS. But I will continue to play my 360 mainly for the achievements.
Why is Sony taking so long with this and in game XMB. Is it really that hard for a multi-billion dollar corporation with nearly limitless resources to get these things done in less than a year. This program sounds great, but you will probably have to pay for it and will only work on certain games.
I think it was Rogue Squadron 3, but I enjoyed how they incorporated achievements in the game. It would keep track of your best scores on a level and also let you what the best score from the developer was on that level.
This is the sort of thing that's totally dumb but fun to talk about. I'd like to see this happen since I beleive achievements do in fact 'steal' sales from ps3 titles. I have both the 360 and the ps3 and when faced with an equal choice (Burnout, COD4) I always go with the 360 version for the utterly meaningless but somehow compelling achievements.
I know, I'm a tool. Go ahead and digg me down for great justice.
I don't even look at the achievements. What I think is fun is when they are all a complete surprise to you as you are just playing a game normally.
If I had to go to a game just to work on achievements, I would think that was more like Work rather than having the fun of playing the game, like I normally want in my free time.
I love achivements, some mystical reason it motivates me to buy more games and beat them in the most challenging difficulties, like gears of war for example I beat it initally on Casual and then I realised the wonderfull world of Achivements, I then promplty relived that campagin again under insane because A) its my favorite game of all time hands down and B) The achivments to unlock, like someone said its proof that I did it, its a representation of what you acomplished cause lets face it its bad enough playing for 13 hours at a time some days and stopping and be like uhhh what did i acomplish today, at least now I can look my Girl Friend straight in the face when she asks what did I do productive today and say " I UNLOCKED 500 Gamerscore points, What the ***** did you do today?!?!? "
Example of PS3 achievements:
"Watched full movie", "Watched full movie without pausing", "Watched all bonus content", "Watched movie in all languages", etc...
Even if it is a low blow, honestly, achievements encourage me to play games. I rent games just for achievements, and I spend a lot of time on ridiculous achievements. This may actually help the PSTriple.
Even if they can, please don't. Achievements can be done well, but usually they are not - take for instance Assassin's Creed. For the sake of achievements, there are pointless sidequests like finding 100 flags in each area, that detract from the game. Is there any reason that an Assassin should be going out of his way to delay his mission to pick up flags? No. I don't mind side quests that make sense, or achievements for completing them, but it seems like its a cheap way to make a game feel "unfinished" because you didn't want to have to beat the final boss using only a wooden sword or some such. Achievements and relatively expensive downloadable content are two things that PSN doesn't need.
Whats the point with achievements....other than bragging rights..!
I would say Sony should come up with something new like say...earn points to redeem at the sony store to download some arcade games or something like that..
The statistical tracking in that game was amazing. I can imagine that being very handy having your personal stats across all titles. Time per level, headshots, suicides, average difficulty.
The dynamic difficult adjustment was also quite compelling, too bad the series bit the dust.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I would hate "achievement points" for the PS3. I had a 360 and those stupid things just ***** me off, because they temporarily take you out of the game experience.
Achievements are worthless. It's kind of cool when you get one I guess but other then that are a waste of time. They would actually be useful if they wen't towards microsoft points or something.

The game should be worth playing without needing some ***** meta score system. Achievements are simply an excuse for developers to make gamers like doing the same ***** over and over boasting about 40+ hours of gameplay as opposed to providing real and stimulating content. However, there are always exceptions and some games lend themselves very will to an achievement system, but I prefer the ones that have internal systems that provide real rewards and unlocks like Uncharted or Ratchet & Clank on the PS3.
With all honesty yes it can they are just achievements but seriously, I have a 360 and I could give to ***** about the achievements seriously what do they get you I am there to play the game not worry about that I just finished storyline a for 400 unlock points....... it makes me laugh when the morons on call of duty 4 are redoing their guns just to get gold guns which look like crap I can tell most of those people aren't into real life guns having a gold gun is tacky and disgusting.
They can be, and they should be. You may hate them, but the truth is that for a lot of gamers achievements give them an incentive to keep playing a game they would have otherwise put on the shelf.
Hey Sony be original and think of your own things. Sorry to say that Sony has been leeching off of others (Nintendo) to further improve their system. As some games have their own in-game achievements lets just leave it at that and don't steal the 360's achievement style.
