- inactive, on 10/26/2009, -0/+13Oregon Trail taught me to never ford a river more then 2 feet deep.
- BHazell, on 10/26/2009, -1/+11Many creatures learn through play; simulated experience is a great teacher.
I really look forward to better investment in decent educational games; games that can adapt to childrens needs and development would be fantastic help to teachers. - diggduggDOOM, on 10/26/2009, -0/+7You have died of dysentery.
I've learned plenty from Oregon Trail, Where ... is Carmen Sandiego?, the Civilization series (OK, most Sid Meier games), etc. - CourageWulf, on 10/26/2009, -0/+7FPS gamers have good hand eye coordination.
- belthesar, on 10/26/2009, -0/+6While I was a bright kid, after 1st grade I didn't read a whole lot. I blame my advanced vocabulary and reading comprehension skills purely on all of the CRPGs I played as a child. Final Fantasy VI, EarthBound, they all helped me to vastly outpace my peers when it came to school.
- StevieJanowski, on 10/26/2009, -0/+5Gran Turismo taught me how to drive...it sucks that in real life your car isn't invincible
- EddiePotato, on 10/26/2009, -1/+6Study brought to you by Bungie. (Halo is no different than any other FPS in that regard)
- itc518, on 10/26/2009, -1/+6I agree, there are some great games out there to help kids learn as well as improve hand eye coordination. Nintendo has always been one of the better companies when it comes to games that can help kids learn, at least from my experience.
- fuzzynyanko, on 10/26/2009, -0/+5I learned more about how technology advances a civilization from Civilization than from any other source.
- Alcorr, on 10/26/2009, -0/+4Nah, counter-strike is where it's at as far as precision execution....
- Donotsurf, on 10/26/2009, -0/+4Yes, because I know when I die, I'll just respawn somewhere on Earth.
- scy1192, on 10/26/2009, -0/+4Can TV help you learn?
Can Books help you learn?
Can Music help you learn?
every type of media, since it can give information, can allow you to learn. - ssquared22, on 10/26/2009, -1/+5The evidence for gaming as a learning tool is strong otherwise those Leapfrog systems wouldn't be as popular as they are. More traditional games, however, lean more towards entertainment and assist in hand-eye coordination and brain maturation in teenagers.
- sgerwel1985, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3CAN they... Yes. However the best thing to point out is they HAVE helped us learn. Look at space exploration or aviation, for quite some time now people in these areas have used video game like programs to learn their craft.
Now on a basic level. look at some of these children now using those interactive learning video games... They are entering their K to 1st grade at much higher comprehension levels than other children who have not used these tools. - Ziriux, on 10/26/2009, -0/+3Yea only if damage was as forgiving as it is in the game in real life.
- andyboyd, on 10/26/2009, -1/+4Yes. I have learned how how to shoot people and evade the police in a stolen vehicle ;)
- shininia, on 10/27/2009, -0/+3RPGs are the only reason I can read.
- Ziriux, on 10/26/2009, -1/+4At times sure, Brain Age Academy is a great tool too help the young develop their Brain, games like Gears of War, well, yea, their not helpful to learning in any way, but maybe quick responses.
- MattyDienhoff, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2"Objectively" would be better. :)
- zionoe, on 10/26/2009, -1/+3Only in few a cases, but not always. For example, will not make you learn "how to make girl friends".. LOLZZZZZzzz
- Alcorr, on 10/26/2009, -1/+3"2. FPS: If you play a fps on anything other than a computer with a mouse and a keyboard you lose."
YES YES YES....anyone who has played both unbiasedly (word?) will tell you this is true... - MattyDienhoff, on 10/27/2009, -0/+2Absolutely. Playing team-based tactical shooters (like Rainbow Six, Operation Flashpoint) has taught me a lot about military matters (particularly small-unit tactics), and has revealed to me my aptitude for planning and leadership. While real-life military tactics and procedures are, of course, quite different and much more complex, the tactical mode of thinking that comes with playing these games really help you grasp the fundamentals.
- AndrewDB, on 10/26/2009, -2/+4If it wasn't for massively online multiplayer games I wouldn't of wanted to learn how to improve my spelling.
- daviz0, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2any form of media has the potential to help people learn
- Hetman, on 10/26/2009, -0/+2Fox news?
- Zanthis, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Games have helped my focus
- Bobboq, on 10/26/2009, -1/+2Fantasy Game (AKA JANE) from Ender's Game anyone?
- inactive, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1You mean focusing on your WoW character instead of your resume and getting a job?
- katachu, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Oregon Trail was the best educational game ever.
- Vivifyer, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1cue activists crying about how games help kids learn to kill :P
- Aokitsune, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1First I was going to say scy1192 had been corrected, but then I realized you still learn from Fox News.
In the same sense that you'd still learn from a textbook referring to civil rights as "trouble ahead" and Russia as the Soviet Union.
Also, did anyone else think of a Shakespeare rpg having potential? - pstroll, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Of course! Sawed off shotgun for close range, rifle for mid range and rail gun for long range.
- EddiePotato, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Pong taught me how to play tennis.
- EddiePotato, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1Did you say something?
- inactive, on 10/26/2009, -0/+1What do they think simulators are?
- insanekoz, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1These comments really suck.
- inactive, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1Why do we have to keep feeding ourselves all these articles "videogames are good for us, see, see!" as if we are self conscience about all the critics that say they warp your brain.
Why can't we just enjoy something for what it is, entertainment and not try to over-analyze it's merits? - Terwa, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1Dugg for EarthBound.
- WutDaHeckMan, on 10/28/2009, -0/+1playing RPGs when I was growing up definitely improved my mental math skills.
- masterstghm, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1Reader Rabbit?
- bubbachuck, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1What a rigged question. Sure, you can learn some. But if you want to learn learn, go do your homework. "Can being punched in the face be educational?"
- path411, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1So even the military uses zboards
- shinkou, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1I still remember how I flipped my dictionary over and over when I got hooked up with RPGs at the age of 10.
- AxeHitchhiker, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1If Zelda games have taught me anything to beat any boss you simply must hit it three times with a weapon you found nearby.
- mrdeadhead, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1suck up
- lemur, on 10/27/2009, -0/+1Is we learning?
- Alcorr, on 10/26/2009, -2/+2wouldn't HAVE*
