- Bartboy919, on 10/11/2007, -3/+81Or is the protection scheme Sparta?
- pnyphnz, on 10/11/2007, -5/+43@darkstalker
Yeah, it's too bad they aren't arcade perfect. - compaqdrew, on 10/11/2007, -0/+33For any of you who are confused,
Cs-3 used a protection scheme so complex it makes AACS look like a joke. Here's the overview:
Every time the system is powed on, the game memory (RAM) is filled from a CD-ROM drive. The game is encrypted, so obviously you can't do a CDROM dump, nor can you swap out with a homebrew CDROM unless you know the proprietary encryption algorithm + key
The RAM is decrypted on the fly by a special decoder chip with no spec.
The decryption key for the above hardware decoder chip is stored in volatile RAM with a finicky battery keeping it in memory. If you reset the circuit with the decryption key (NOT the arcade machine itself, but the part with the decoder chip), or there's any error in the decryption process, or heck, if the battery goes dead, the decryption key is obviously no longer stored in said volatile RAM, and you're left with a brick.
Basically, if there's any funny business, BAM, the secondary logic board commits suicide and no more game decrypting for you.
The article claims that Andres somebody wrote a program that can read the data right off the CDROM and decrypt it. But Andre's blog (warning: spanish is not my first language) seems to indicate that he may have found a weakness in the algorithm but it's far from a working decrypt/game rom. - RedPhalanx, on 10/11/2007, -0/+29It took 10 years to crack this. The protection scheme is just madness.
- Djarum, on 10/11/2007, -2/+25The encryption is not fully broken and the hardware itself is completely undocumented.
Basically it is going to be quite sometime before you kiddies can go play CPS3 games for free for 5 minutes and never touch again. - nogami, on 10/11/2007, -0/+20It sounds like it's not so much the actual encryption, but the fact that it destroys the hardware if it detects tampering. If it was a common item, nobody would hesitate to crack into it, but with them being rare and expensive, it's not something people volunteer their own system for.
- kypen, on 10/11/2007, -0/+18Because they did. It was called Street Fighter: Anniversary Collection and it included all 6 SF:2s and SF3:TS. It's on XBL for the original XBOX.
- KibibyteBrain, on 10/11/2007, -0/+16Not long, as there are many more emulator coding junkies than crypto junkies, and this is basically not too far off from an emulator coders wet dream.
- juancn, on 10/11/2007, -1/+14It's not completetly broken.
I just read Andy's blog (the guy that did the hard work, see http://andreasnaive.blogspot.com/ if you speak spanish) and it is not completely broken.
Anyway, he has made great advancements. He has managed to obtain a great deal of information on how the encryption algorithm works (which is the biggest problem at this point), but we're far from being able to fully decrypt a CPS3 disk. - crisisaverted, on 10/11/2007, -3/+15That's pretty exciting stuff. I think it is hilarious that hackers are going to make this available than the companies with the facilities to do so on home consoles despite how popular Wii VC and Xbox Live are. Then they complain about piracy!
- LordofChaosIori, on 10/11/2007, -0/+10I wonder how long we have to wait for an emulator that runs this... :/
- Andrewe1, on 10/11/2007, -2/+10I'm a native Spanish speaker and didn't understand half of what he just said lol
- DarkStalker, on 10/11/2007, -8/+16Street Fighter 3's already been available on the DC, PS2, and Xbox already.
- Roger, on 10/11/2007, -0/+7Wow, I remember when the first CPS2 emulator came out. I'd say its about time.
- reddevil3, on 10/11/2007, -2/+9Why don't they bring SF 3/SFA 3 to VC/Xbox Live with online play? I'll gladly spend upto $20 on these classic games.
- PlatSajack, on 10/11/2007, -4/+10Folks, I literally just did a few cartwheels in my room after reading the headline. Digg, you just don't know how long I've been waiting for CPS3 to get decrypted. Multi-player Street Fighter Three: Third Strike internet tournaments? Yesrly.
- knodi, on 10/11/2007, -0/+5Damn its been a long wait.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/11/2007, -1/+6Finally! Now I can see what Red Earth/Warwizard was like.
I remember the group CPS2SHOCK working on cracking CPS2 encryption, but they had a site and were working on the project for years. Not to mention the CPS2 had many good games that until recently had never been seen outside of a console. I hadent heard about any groups working on CPS3, and the was literally only about 3 games on the system ever made.
That being said, it was surprising to hear about this, but its more than welcome news :) - Coy0te, on 10/11/2007, -2/+7OMFG this is fantastic news. I own SF the anniversary collection but always wanted second strike and new generation.
- Godmil, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5I'm very excited, I've been dying to play Third Strike since I saw this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ElsA0rSGqjc
But never had any hardware to buy it for.. and it never came out on the PC. - Sabin, on 10/11/2007, -1/+5Get a dreamcast and you can have both on one disc.
- jedikv, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3But indeed worth it
- elitexero, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3That's awesome! I JUST built a MAME cabinet. :D
- pnyphnz, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3Well...Daigo lost, didn't he?
- leeisl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3That's Sega Naomi hardware, not CPS3.
- McTendo, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3They need to combine that with Capcom Vs. SNK 2 EO for the greatest 3-way Mexican standoff ever in fighting game history.
- djfooroach, on 10/11/2007, -2/+5This is ironic. 2 days ago I was looking for a CPS3 emulator so I could play SFIII, every website I went to said it would be years before one was released. I headed over to GameStop and shelled out the cash for the PS2 port of SFIII...2 days later, CPS3 emulation is announced. God hates me.
- Godmil, on 10/11/2007, -0/+3I've seen the match in full, and know other people can do that. I just think it all came together so perfectly.. a kinda last minute comeback and in a competition too. It was like the only thing he could have done but he just nailed it so perfectly (topping it off with his own super art at the end) it just gives me shivers.
- staticneuron, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2Alpha didn't come out for the xbox did it?
- pnyphnz, on 10/11/2007, -1/+3As long as the move properties are the same, that's way more than what console can do for you. If the game speed is more accurate than the PS2 or XBox versions, then that's even better.
- foxhoundadmin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+2edit: delete (logged in, and digg.com took me back to the previous story i was looking at. kinda lame how they haven't fixed this yet. :\ ).
- andreusboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1You know...
some people actually like to learn, hack, code their way through things instead of being apathetic. I don't think playing the games is their motivation. 3 of them are somewhat the same game and the rest maybe are *****. - inactive, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1OMG AT LAST, THIS IS NOT SARCASM, YOU JUST MADE MY DAY!!!!!!!
- coreoption, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Has anyone emulated the Sega Naomi board yet?
- bluepeej, on 10/11/2007, -13/+14Did the encryption key start with 09 F9?
- seneyr, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Oh hell yes.
- Sabin, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1oops....KILL IT WITH FIRE!!!
- superfly007, on 10/11/2007, -0/+1Now to see if they can start phoenixing CPS3 boards. (reviving dead boards that no longer have the decryption code due to suicide battery or tampering, etc.)
- djfooroach, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0Yeah, it was a damn nice comeback considering even a weak punch would have killed him at that point. The fact that was bold enough to attempt it is another factor in its awesomeness. He could've jumped over Justin, but instead he opted for a balls-out last ditch attempt at a comeback - and succeeded. I do give him the ultimate props for pulling it off. I just wish people wouldn't spread the video like AIDs as if its the most amazing, spectactular, god-like thing anyone has ever done on SFIII :D
- twigboy, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0@arcooke
to say they can. - leeisl, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0o.k
- digitul, on 10/11/2007, -0/+0nice. i just got my cab repainted, his will be a nice way to beak it back in!
- alexakira, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Wow, only 69 days and I'm already playing Red Earth at full resolution and no problems. Oh, by the way, I've been playing for a little more than 5 minutes and I'm far from bored, old man.
- tempurasama, on 10/11/2007, -1/+0when can I get this on my PSP? I got CPS1 and CPS2 on it already. Already bored from playing them too much.
- TJacques, on 10/11/2007, -4/+3Marvel Vs. Capcom 2, anyone?
- enorganik, on 10/11/2007, -2/+0I have been waiting for this for far too long. All they need is an exploit and it shall be built upon.
- h4mx0r, on 10/11/2007, -4/+2Now I can finally play it on my single-core PC!
(fyi, the PS2 emulator requires a dual-core to run smoothly, thus mame = yay) - Valtiel, on 10/11/2007, -3/+1dunezone was dugg down for... the truth?
