Better start saving...- burkewendt, on 10/12/2007, -44/+10Dammit!! I just bought the silver one, and this one is so much cooler.... Ehh, i'm over it. I do like that all black controller tho
- meez, on 10/12/2007, -9/+499The black Xbox360's will have bigger drives than their white counterparts... mmm
- NeoCortex, on 10/12/2007, -5/+55While I like a black 360 better than my current one, the color isn't enough for a re-purchase. What I'm really interested in is the bigger hard drive and the cooler running temp, and hopefully quieter operation. If they have the hard drive available separately and give you some kind of way to transfer the data from your current 20GB, I'll pick that up. The only way I'm upgrading my entire premium system is if they offer some kind of trade-in that takes a couple hundred bucks off the price (I can dream, can't I).
- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -22/+6I have 14 demos, about a dozen Xbox Live Arcade games, and a dozen or so movie and game trailers on my hard drive right now. I still have about 1.5 GB of free space. And if I needed a bit more space, I could always delete a few of the demos. It's not really necessary to have the bigger hard drive unless you actually want to do more with the system than the average person does (and i personally don't, although extra headroom is always comforting).
If you want to buy movies and TV shows through Xbox Live Marketplace, though, 120 GB may still not be enough. I think that 250 GB seems more like the right number. - kodek, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28There's a downside to this: As HDMI becomes the preferred interface, movies will be able to force the ICT flag. Right now, the xbox's lack of HDMI is helping keep the ICT away from movies. Let me just quote the Wiki:
"Also, the Microsoft Xbox360 game console, for which there is a HD-DVD add-on available, is only capable of analog non-HDCP-connections. If ICT would be forced, Microsoft's flagship console (note that MS is integral part of the HD-DVD camp, currently providing the VC-1 codec that is used in over 90% of all HD-DVD releases) would only be able to display a quarter of the actual resolution of the media, so movie studios are apparently in agreement to not include the ICT flag on any HD DVDs or Blu-ray Discs in the immediate future."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDCP - dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16ICP: But that's IF it were forced. The studios for both formats have agreed to hold off till 2012 before enforcing any kind of flagged content for HDMI. So, basically, they gimped it at the last second and another generation of digital media gets to avoid this crap, thankfully.
Now if we can get one format, they'll actually start selling these things. I'm not touching either format till the other is either gone, or made irrelevant. - Oakie1, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2@ NeoCortex
Actually, if you buy any kind of equipment at Best Buy and purchase the extended warranty, you can basically return it for a newer or different item. Just pay the difference. Ive been doing that for almost five years now, from the GB color to the GB advance to the XBOX to the XBOX 360. Ive actually saved a lot of money doing this, never had any trouble with returns. - daridave, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22not me.
Yes, the improved hardware is tempting, but I prefer white to black.
Plus if I ever get the HD-DVD addon, I want it to match my 360, not make an inversed oreo cookie (with my Wii). - Pikachelsea, on 10/12/2007, -19/+10I hope all you 360 fans out there now realize that Microsoft is and forever will be a computer company. They never saw the 360 as a final product after release... just another computer which would have inevitable upgrades to screw over the early adopters, thereby eliminating one of the primary reasons to get a home gaming console: uniformity of specs on the target platform. Hope you're all happy with this. If I had just bought a 360, like several friends of mine, I sure wouldn't be.
And yes, we all know "no one's forcing anyone to buy it". That doesn't mean we have to approve of what Microsoft is doing to the home console industry. I don't want 12 versions of the same product. If I wanted to buy a million upgrades down the road to make my gaming machine better and better, I'd invest in a gaming PC. I want to buy a home console ONCE and be done with it. - ipodsweatshop, on 10/12/2007, -20/+59Still no HD-DVD? So the thing is almost $700 with HD-DVD, and suddenly the PS3 is cheap....
- CanadianGeese, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3"There's a downside to this: As HDMI becomes the preferred interface, movies will be able to force the ICT flag. Right now, the xbox's lack of HDMI is helping keep the ICT away from movies."
Just an FYI, you can bypass any ICT and DOT restrictions right now if you use the VGA cable, which does provide a digital path required by ICT and DOT. - bbrosemer, on 10/12/2007, -3/+53As we all know from the MacBook this is the "Black Tax"
- jimbojim, on 10/12/2007, -18/+8"Still no HD-DVD? So the thing is almost $700 with HD-DVD, and suddenly the PS3 is cheap...."
Yeah.. except MS isn't forcing the HD-DVD drive down down players throats like the Sony is doing with blu-ray... - charlescheese, on 10/12/2007, -24/+11Xbox 360 $479 no HD DVD or Blue Ray and hard drive is not upgradeable.
PS3 $499 Blue Ray player included and hard drive is upgradeable. - avihappy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+19"We've confirmed with trusted sources..."
This is NOT confimed! - kodek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10@canadiangeese:
VGA uses an analog signal (wiki: "Video Graphics Array (VGA) is an analog computer display standard first marketed in 1987 by IBM.") If they enable ICT to movies, and you're either using a non-hdcp-capable display or an analog connection, the movie will either fall back to below-DVD quality, or simply show an error message. - foolfromhell, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7@Meez

? - prisoner24601, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3Without the HD-DVD drive, I'm not sure I care. I really have no interest in an external one and eventually I will want HD, so I'll be waiting. (At least until Halo 3 comes out anyway...)
- BugMeNot2, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5The Xbox 360 1337.

PS3 $499 Blue Ray player included and hard drive is upgradeable."
You almost have a point, but unfortunately you got something wrong.
The $480 360 comes with a 120 GB hard drive. The $500 PS3 comes with a 20 GB hard drive, and you would have to pay to get a 60 GB one. Even if you did upgrade the PS3 (for a price), you couldn't equal the 120 GB hard drive that is already in the $480 price point. Then it just depends how important HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is to you. - Kauzman01, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3And it runs faster too.
- Kauzman01, on 10/12/2007, -11/+6oh... and yeah... don't forget once you go black you won't go back.
- Cerrato0426, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5@DIGG
I don't think you can buy the 60 gig HDD to upgrade. The PS3 allows most 3.5" internal HDD. Therefore, you should stop trying to fight it. If high def movies are something you like, the PS3 and XBOX 360 have a very similar price. - Sms4001, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3ahhh I'll buy it at a HIIGH price.
- Wiinii, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2GamePro says this might be April Fool's joke:
http://www.gamepro.com/news.cfm?article_id=106848 - sinembarg0, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ipodsweatshop:
You can still buy the 360 without the HD-DVD drive. No games require the HD-DVD drive. Including that in comparing the 360's price is like including a surround sound system or TV, except the HD-DVD drive has no effect whatsoever on gameplay, whereas a surround sound system or TV does. - Lavarock, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1DICK POST IN A GAMING STORY.
- KnytFyre, on 10/12/2007, -69/+4ehh, I like my system, just drop a 120gig hard drive on the market for 100bux and an HDMI cable for the original 360, and I'll be just fine. When it comes to the cases I'd much rather buy a 3rd party case, or use decals, spending the extra cash just to get a black 360 doesn't make sense to me.
- SlackerCSB, on 10/12/2007, -3/+59There is no HDMI output on the original 360.
- Jangles, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4people are spending for the HDD and HDMI, not necessarily the color black.
- turpenine, on 10/12/2007, -21/+13paying extra just to have a black macbook doesn't make any sense, but people still do it.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -21/+14You do know the black macbook has better hardware right?
- DBiz, on 10/12/2007, -27/+4@ turpenine:
I have a black Macbook, and it comes with a bigger HD and faster processor than the standard white Macbook.
Moron. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -2/+43And you can (easily) equip a white Macbook to be functionally identical to the black one. The only difference is the $50 US Apple charged for the black paint job.
- thatsmyaibo, on 10/12/2007, -9/+8You're right, with the upgrade on the white one there is a $50 difference.
- ST0N3, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3actually, the black macbook used to be priced $150 dollars more than a similarly equipped white macbook, but with the release of the core2duo line the price difference was decreased
- mrsims82, on 10/12/2007, -14/+5i wouldn't get too excited if i were you....check out the comment below.
- aapala, on 10/12/2007, -6/+46Why not?? It was confirmed by unnamed sources. How could that possibly be a false claim?
- kriegs, on 10/12/2007, -13/+7I hope there is some way to transfer game saves and other files from the 20gig to the 120gig hd.
- Bartboy919, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1Hey stupid, every hear of a memory card?
- montiff, on 10/12/2007, -21/+8No built in HD drive = laaame
- Eldorian, on 10/12/2007, -15/+4Cool, so there are features other than just "black" that justify the higher price for the system. I was worried they were going to be like Apple and just charge more for being black instead of white just because they can.
- kdivad, on 10/12/2007, -9/+1:( I was waiting until this Friday to buy a Premium as I'd given up on the HDMI version coming out, but with the 100GB of extra space I might have to wait until the end of the summer and get the new Premium
- BrendanM14, on 10/12/2007, -15/+84original 360 is black (pause) NOT.
- Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -26/+3Damn it... I meant to digg you down...

Title: New Tetris Clone playable through flash!
Another nail in the PS3 coffin.
Were out of nails, and the coffin is full, k? Done. - craig4, on 10/12/2007, -14/+2In a way it is a big hit to Sony, but the term another nail in the coffin is a little over used. HDMI for the 360 is a pretty big upgrade in most gamers eyes.
- sleepwalkers, on 10/12/2007, -3/+26How on EARTH is that the nail in the PS3 coffin? I own a 360 myself (and have a distaste for Sony as of late), but... this upgrade doesn't make the 360 look too great.
$20 more for a PS3 that has a HD disc player in it, and $680 total for a 360 with an HD-DVD drive. The only hardware advantage it has over the PS3 once you take the "Elite" 360 + HD-DVD add-on is 60 GB of HD space. And it's $80 more.
Tons of PS3 detractors cited it's price as the biggest factor against it, and now a tricked out 360 is $80 more than the PS3. - libertao, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3If it came with an HD-DVD drive, THEN I'd say it's the nail in the proverbial PS3 coffin.
- Snakedal337, on 10/12/2007, -11/+73Can we please stop saying that on every GAMING thread?
- wonky73, on 10/12/2007, -6/+45Ah yes "confirmed" by some random guy walking down the hallway and here's a picture of a dev kit. I'll confirm an xbox 360 with flying butt monkeys.
- m3mn0n, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1indeed, what an absolute joke of a "confirmed" story
- razorsharp, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Go to GameStop, pick up GameInformer, read the article.
- jmdajr, on 10/12/2007, -7/+16I can live without it
- marnaq, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I can't. I need Black Xbox 360 intravenous.
- darkamster07, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2if this means that the price of the 20 gig model drops, great, otherwise, I really don't care, if I wanted a console that was black with a bunch of expensive bells and whistles I would buy a ps3
- Comkeen, on 10/12/2007, -25/+16So for $479, I get to pay for a system that has a larger hard drive and slightly-better picture quality (due to HDMI connection). Um... okay.
Or for 20 bucks more I could pick up a PS3 that has built-in Wifi, next-gen movie player and HDMI output. Good job Microsoft, way to stick it to Sony! Dur...
I was actually excited about the 'rumored' Black Xbox 360 features, but this is just a bloated Premium system. At least throw us a freakin' bone here, MS, and put in built-in Wifi (those recievers for Xbox you have to buy are a bloody rip-off).- Satanael, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4Oh I won't get started on the "How crappy PS3 is" rants...
- konamicode, on 10/12/2007, -15/+8|Sarcasm|
Wow, sweet burn. That's why Sony's totally blowing MS out of the water in console sales!
|/Sarcasm|
No, wait...Sony's just blowing.
BUT - I do agree with you about the Wifi...What gives? - pooper, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11Throw in a built-in HDDVD drive and I'll pay 600 cash...
- Inferno52386, on 10/12/2007, -3/+21I could be wrong here, but I'm pretty sure the 499US PS3 does not have built in wifi.
I'd much rather use a hard wired set up anyways, but that's just me.
Also, I think you are missing the point of the black 360. Aren't they releasing the new system mainly due to their IPTV they are working on? That was the whole reason I was ready to trade my old one in for a new one. again, correct me if I'm wrong here. - Slvrgun, on 10/12/2007, -15/+9So for $600 I get Blu-Ray, very few good exclusives (they just keep going), terrible controller, no Media Center integration, and "Home", no HDMI cables, and a Network not even close to the closeness and the integration of Xbox Live, and many of the same games that appear on the 360 but don't look as good on the PS3. Yeah now what were you saying?
- craig4, on 10/12/2007, -5/+17since when is PS3 w/built in wifi only 500 dollars?
- CrispyStatic, on 10/12/2007, -16/+2OMG...I'm gonna have to sell my premium unit and get this one. It looks so sexy in black!
- Metaridley, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9So you're going to spend your money on it because of the COLOR?
- Bartboy919, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1Wow, every hear of spray paint?
- GeorgeTuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That worries me that you find a black games console 'sexy'.
- o0joshua0o, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4Argh....Just when you think you've got the latest and greatest, they come out with a new revision that's so much better! Then you end up buying two instead of one, like you'd originally planned. MS is taking a page out of Nintendo's playbook.
- Karted, on 10/12/2007, -9/+35CONFIRMED: Bill Gates giving every human on earth 1 million dollars.
I have confirmed with trusted sources. So it must be true.- SkippyDoorknob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32He's not just giving it away for free. You have to forward an email around to as many friends as you can first. THEN you get your money.
- CkMaverick, on 10/12/2007, -3/+9According to the current population of earth (~6.7 billion) and Bill Gates' recent estimates of net wealth (~56 billion $US) he would only be able to give every person on the planet ~8.35 $US. Anybody wanna go bowling?
- TheCount, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1The difference between you and Engadget is that they actually DID confirm it, you just sat on your ass and mocked a story that has been rumored for months now and is finally confirmed. Yes, "by trusted sources", which is what most of the news you take as fact every day is, confirmed by trusted sources.
- Firehed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@CkMaverick - Well, comparing that to the tiny fraction of a cent that I'd be able to give everyone on the planet, I'd say that's nothing to sneeze at. Just the fact that he could afford the POSTAGE to do so is insane, as that alone would come out to several billion dollars (although I expect he could get a bulk-mailing discount).
Not to mention that eight bucks is a useful amount of money in many parts of the world, unlike how I can buy a single lunch with it here.
- TIEpilot501, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4This is huge news. 120GB and HDMI. Wow. Still, I'm hoping they lower the price to the Premium so I can buy it.
- RayBan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+11My brother bought a core package at launch and when playing Oblivion, the machine drowns out the sound of the nearby airport and all the planes that fly over, not to mention the actual game. My question is will this one quieter and not get so damn hot, because winter is over and I don't need it warming the room anymore, though I guess I can still use it to fry my eggs.
- murraj2, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8From Article: "Elite models run cooler than normal 360s, but they are not yet confirmed to have 65nm chips."
- sexycommando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I'm very noise-sensitive and I bought the Wii over the 360 for the sole reason that the 360 is too loud (I like 360 games more than Wii games). The new one may be cooler, but if it isn't significantly quieter I won't be buying.
- actionscripted, on 10/12/2007, -8/+2"Microsoft never did or nor does not currently..."
*sigh* - noahhoward, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4Where are the people screaming about the 'black tax' or does that only apply when Apple releases a product with better specs in a black case?
Just want to make sure I understand the rules before raving about the color.- libertao, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Try reading the posts above you.

For 20 dollars more you can get a PS3 with Built in Wifi????? i thought only the 600 dollar version came with wifi.
Actually for 20 dollars more you can get a 20Gb Ps3 With no Wifi, the only thing that still makes this a steal in terms of hardware only, is that its still cheap for a blu ray player - Osbourne, on 10/12/2007, -41/+66So the latest rundown of Digg retardia:
$500 PS3 = Too expensive
$600 iPhone = Not expensive
$480 XBOX 360 = Not expensive
Wow, some masterminds are really at play here.- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -30/+16600$ PS3 you moron. No one wants the retard system.
- ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -24/+41You're comparing the lowest-end PS3 ($500) versus the highest-end Xbox 360 ($480) and you think you're making some kind of an intelligent point?
Nice try. You should be a lawyer.
P.S. EVERYONE thinks that the iPhone is overpriced. Way to keep in touch with reality, bud. - nsjoker, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5I do, the 600 PS3 has chrome.. which is for rappers and professional athletes.
- Jarett, on 10/12/2007, -3/+10@ilyag
The low end PS3 more closely matches the premium 360 in terms of features.
The both don't have WiFi. And both have 20GB drives.
It's a fair comparison (assumming the 20GB PS3's are still for sale). - zetsurin, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10"It's a fair comparison (assumming the 20GB PS3's are still for sale)."
It's a fair comparison irrespective of whether the PS3 is selling as it highlights the hypocrisy on Digg. They said the $500 PS3 was too expensive, now the similarly priced 360 is somehow cool? - bethlagarrison, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Let me fix this for you.
$600 system with crap online play and a crap library = Too expensive
$480 system with terrific online play and an amazing library = Not expensive - zeroduck, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2It's also meant to be a premium bundle. 480, 500, or 600 dollars isn't going to stop hardcore gamers and fanboys from buying them. 480, 500, or 600 dollars isn't going to get an install base of 100 million.
- gage006, on 10/12/2007, -7/+28No hd-dvd built in?
No wifi built in?
Meh...i'll pass. I'll just pick up the new hard drive when they sell it separately. - Darksaber11, on 10/12/2007, -13/+6Why are so many people getting pissy about the lack on WiFi in the 360? It has an Ethernet port, so it's no like it's exactly hard to hook up to your high speed internet or what have you.
Even though this source is dubious, I'm hoping this is true, I kinda want to buy black 360 controller for my PC.- gage006, on 10/12/2007, -7/+22Because i'm not a huge fan of a cable running all across my house. I also have no desire to crawl into my attic to hide it.
- scotus, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4not everyone is a college student happy to have wires running this way and that across their floor. and not everyone has their cable modem set up near their tv. if only the wii had its ethernet port work as a wifi bridge, the wii60 would be legit.
- TheG2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5And not everyone is happy with packet loss when playing online games either.
Wifi still isn't amazing and when downloading the large demos and movies from XBL, a wired high speed connection is still probably going to be the first choice. I know with my Wii I'm wondering how this whole online via Wifi only. - MScrip, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4How fast is your internet connection?
If it's anything less than 10Mbps... even 802.11b would be fine. A 100Mbps wired network in your house is nice... but when the pipe from outside is only 3Mbps...
Distance and latency are still problems with WIFI though... - itsme92, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeah, but if you're like me, and my WRT54G is literally on the other side of the wall when I want to play, then Wi-fi is fine. I'm using my Macbook right there now. It's less than 10 feet from the router, but they have a wall between them, and I don't want to drill holes in my wall, I'd rather just use Wi-fi, for anything: game system, computer, printer, etc.
Seriously. What's with all the hating on Wi-Fi over here. If you live in a house with no Ethernet running through it (like me) then it's practically the second coming of Christ, it's a lot cheaper and easier than running wires through my house.
- scotus, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1can someone actually explain the benefit they expect to see from hdmi over component/vga?
- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Although shielded cables prevent static, HDMI is always interference-free because of its digital signal. Component, however, is not entirely safe from interference, although shielded cables (like the ones the 360 brings) do help.
Also, not every TV has VGA. My 32" Sylvania does 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i, has 2 component inputs, 2 composite, and an HDMI, and I still can't seem to find it's VGA/DVI-D port. Oh, it doesn't have one.
Although VGA is very good and useful, it's not always available, even in TVs that have HDMI. So there's your answer. - cmdrNacho, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1Does anyone else have issues with the VGA connection??????? The only way it works, is to unplug it, turn on the xbox, and then plug in the VGA. This totally sucks. And almost makes me want to sell it now, for the HDMI interface. As far as I know this is the only way to upconvert DVD's to 720p, as component won't do it. Will the HDMI be able to upconvert DVD's???
- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Although shielded cables prevent static, HDMI is always interference-free because of its digital signal. Component, however, is not entirely safe from interference, although shielded cables (like the ones the 360 brings) do help.
- DoctorOther, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I'm pretty happy with the 360 as it is. And I think the white and silver look slick. Happy to see they are moving ever-upwards though. Rock on, Microsoft, for making a pretty great product.
- kolop1, on 10/12/2007, -5/+5Uh...This is not confirmed. Marked as inaccurate.
- Cyber_Akuma, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1PROTIP for anybody that wants it just because they think the color looks better:
Your local hardware store most likely sells spraypaint. - djSyndrome, on 10/12/2007, -1/+26So when the headline says 'CONFIRMED' it really means 'QUESTIONABLE SCAN FROM APRIL (FOOL'S) ISSUE OF SECOND-RATE GAME MAGAZINE'.
Thanks for clearing that up.- GeorgeTuk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Not sure why everyone is so sure this is an Aprils Fool as much as it is true. I doubt its a hoax as its been on the cards for a fair bit and talked about for a May release but until its confirmed in a press release from Redmond just read the articles with interest.
- MonsterMagnet, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3??????????????????????????????
I just bought mine a month ago !!! Can't i just add the 120 gig to mine?
As for running cooler mine runs just fine.
Although i question the NO WIFI or The HD DVD drive will not be internal or bundled -- Microsoft never did or nor does not currently have plans to put an HD DVD drive in the 360. That really bothers me. I mean it would raise the price a little of the system but it would cut cost of making an individual add-on that not everyone is buying. As for the Black color that is not important to me it doesn't effect my game play or functionality of the system.
M$ why don't you listen to the consuners ?????
Over all i will believe it when i see it. This could be a mod case or a very well done photo shop render- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -6/+5When you stop abbreviating Microsoft as M$ and instead as MS, or its stock name, MSFT.
- Sliver85, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Unnamed "trusted sources" and just a picture of a dev kit. I'll wait for a real announcement from MS.
- katanaswordfish, on 10/12/2007, -14/+23Heres what i don't understand: (I haven't taken part in this generations "console wars" so far, however, i do intend on buying one of the consoles at a later date.)
XBox 360 Premium (~$400) + HD-DVD drive (~$200) + 12-month XBox Live Subscription (~$50) = [$650]
Whereas,
PS3 (which has a built in Blu-Ray drive, and no subscription fees for online play) = [~600]
Now, i am completely impartial to all of the current consoles at the moment, because, in my opinion, none of them have nearly good enough software to even consider buying at this point. It seems to me like Microsoft is just splitting up the total cost of their product to make the illusion that it is cheaper than their competitor. The PS3 gets a lot of bad rep because of its cost but it almost seems more convenient to me too have the high-definition (HDDVD or Blu-Ray) built in to the console.- Disodium, on 10/12/2007, -8/+25why does everyone include the HDDVD drive? I for one dont give a flying crap about HDDVD or Blue Ray since i dont have a HDTV, even if i did its not enough of a difference to warrent the cost. I like how i'm not forced to buy into HDDVD if i dont want to
- dunlop, on 10/12/2007, -11/+12Nobody refutes that the PS3 is expensive for what you get...The problem is they force a next gen media (Blu-Ray) whereas M$ gives you the choice.
From a gaming perspective the XBOX is the better deal hands down - dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6Who still pays full retail for an Xbox 360? Didn't you see all the promotions and rebates just about every retailer's been running since Xmas?
Hell, I bought a brand new 360 off of eBay for $320 back in January. I bought one for a friend last August for $360.
Let's also look at what you get for your $50 for XBL.
Ranked matches, private matches, player performance ranking, voice chat in all games (even when watching movies), leaderboards, videochat support, etc... I'm okay with spending $40-50 a year for that versus "free's" T9 based web browser and half assed voice chat support. - NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4What if I don't care about buying into the latest format wars? That's $200 in my pocket in this case. After all, I'm buying a GAME console, not a next gen DVD player.
- hightower77, on 10/12/2007, -6/+4@Disodium & dunlop
HD-DVD or Blu-Ray will be what most next gen games need at some point in the future. DVD as we all know, doesn't have near the capacity.
Not having a HDTV is not really a valid argument, I hate when people say that. I didn't have a HDTV the first 3 weeks I had my PS3 and I was still pretty damn impressed. (Now that I have my HDTV, I'm even more impressed.) It's more than graphics, it about the size and scope of the game too.
If you can have a player (Blu-Ray or HD-DVD) that can play both formats old and new, why would you want to limit yourself to what a game developer can put on a DVD? That's like telling the developers to work with a technology that isn't as good because you don't give a crap even though it will effect your gaming experience. - MaynardJK, on 10/12/2007, -7/+5@hightower77
"HD-DVD or Blu-Ray will be what most next gen games need at some point in the future. DVD as we all know, doesn't have near the capacity."
That is a stupid argument. I will gladly keep the $200 and get of my ass once in awhile and swap disks if the devs need more space. - hightower77, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1@MaynardJK
Valid point.
But with nearly every other aspect of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray being superior such as being True HD content, throughput etc, at least in my opinion, I see it being the near future for gaming. Yeah, I'm a genius huh? Since it's already here. :)
Which ever format ends up winning, game developers are always wanting to push what a system can do. DVD is the most limited of those technologies, so just by the nature of the technological beast, it will end up being slowly phased out.
I don't have anything against multi-disc games, the first final fantasy for the PS-one was 5 discs I think, it rocked. But if developers have the technology to put all the content in one disc, I can't see them choosing to split it up. I could very well be wrong though. - dunlop, on 10/12/2007, -3/+0"@Disodium & dunlop

The key phrase is at some point in the future. Blu-Ray for the PS3 is useful for movie viewing. Because it is a first generation drive it is SLOW. Compare the load times on any similar 360/PS3 game (yes it is quieter however....). One of these formats will be used a lot in gaming, just not in the near future - spidoman, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5"That is a stupid argument. I will gladly keep the $200 and get of my ass once in awhile and swap disks if the devs need more space."
Amen to that, I just finished installing vista off of my 7 thousand floppy disks. Then I played some Ninja Gaiden off my 3,000 floppies. But atleast I'm not blowing my money on a DVD player like you chumps.
In other news, you'll never need more than 64kb of RAM.
- naffets, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Fantastic news...for people that don't already own one.
Otherwise, pretty crappy really - When my 360 fails it just means i'll be paying more for one that fits in with my ps3, screen, keyboard and pc. Still, a positive piece of news for people who don't yet own a 360, means they can get a better piece of kit than the rest of us (Those that own one). - MonsterMagnet, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3For a bigger Hard drive to work Microsoft had better allow a more slack rope when it comes to interfacing it. Like being able to extract data off the HD to my PC
for example. If i buy a game or movie i should be able to transfer it to my PC than to my Archos and Vice a Versa !!! I find a bigger HD redundant if i can fluently interact with it's full capabilities. This whole cutting off the hands of the consumer and owners over copy right crap is getting ridicules. If i buy it i own it. PERIOD !- MaynardJK, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Take that up with the MPAA. I'm sure Microsoft would be glad to let you transfer it to different devices if they wouldn't be sued for it.
- andyschiu, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Can anyone make sense of this?
The article states that the 360 Elite will be in limited quantities; after it has been sold out, the 360 Premium will have all the 360 Elite features sans the black color. I mean, doesn't it make sense to just wait until the 360 Elite sells out and then grab the 360 Premium (when it's updated to 120GB, HDMI, cooler cpu, etc. and has all the same features as the 360 Elite) at a $100 lower?- UncleCrapper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why was this dugg down? I have the very same question. After the "Elite" model is sold out and the Elite features find their way to the Premium model will the Premium model then cost $479?
The pricing doesn't make any sense. - eudaimo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2My take is that the Elite is going to sell out and then they will sell it at Premium prices for $400. So yeah, you're basically paying for black and the head start on the other features.
- eudaimo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Digg is so strange sometimes. The people above who complained of being dugg down have been dugg up ...but now I have been dugg down, for offering my guess on the answer to their question. Did I miss something?
- UncleCrapper, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Why was this dugg down? I have the very same question. After the "Elite" model is sold out and the Elite features find their way to the Premium model will the Premium model then cost $479?
- shm0edawg, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5There will be an XBOX360 Black. But it won't be in limited quantities like the article suggests. You can take my word for it, or not. It's your choice.
- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10Well, that's about as reliable as the article and their unnamed sources.
- NewChar, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7Hmm, someone should mirror his comment and submit it to Digg as a story entitled, "CONFIRMED: Black Xbox 360 is NOT Limited Edition."
- Firehed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3CONFIRMED: For $9 worth of spray paint and masking tape, you can get the Xbox 360 in any color you want^W^W^W ONE-UNIT SUPER-LIMITED EDITION!
- shm0edawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I have friends on the xbox team...... but why would you believe that either?
- TheFlood16, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7@katanaswordfish
that's the whole point. i have a 360, but don't want an HD DVD format right now, so I CHOOSE not to buy it, it's not an included cost that I will never use.
As for the cost of xbox live.........don't even try online console gaming on another system.- NSMike, on 10/12/2007, -5/+8Well, the reply button is included, and it's free, so why do you CHOOSE not to use it?
- Septimus, on 10/12/2007, -3/+1MS confirmed this under NDA about a month and a half ago.
Supposedly the black will become an option dropping the Elite tag at some stage. - VeganG, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Save "Confirmed" for official announcements. Yet another article about this with nothing new in it, this time from Engadget, means nothing.
- digganoid, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Really should come with the wifi attachment included for this price....
- dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6I have a better question from this...
When's the 120GB drive shipping? I could give a crap about a black console, as I usually spend my time playing it instead of looking at it.
I want a bigger drive so I don't have to constantly mind my download habits and such.- jacksons98, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2I don't know why you X360 owners don't bitch more about it, but it has USB ports tell Microsoft to open them up to peripherals. On the PS3 you can use any external drive you choose, keyboards, etc there is no reason X360 shouldn't be able to do the same.
- exhilator, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2So we're paying $80 extra for a 120 gb hardrive and an HDMI port? I thought it would be smart if MS made the 'elite' version the price of the premium, eliminate the core version, and drop the premium's price to $300-350.
- maninthemask, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Ha. The black ones always have bigger discks.
- VVCephei, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0It's not about how big your hard drive is, it's about what you put on it that counts...
P.s... I REALLY want the black xbox 360... - postal21, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7I want that 120 gig HD for my 360... my 20's mighty full of junk.
- MikeOSX, on 10/12/2007, -3/+7Dammit...I'm all out of HDMI inputs!
- greenmile, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0time to get an hdmi selector
- sexycommando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1monoprice has a nice hdmi switch
- BloodyDischarge, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6This is great news! Sounds like they fixed the heat and noise issues with the 360, so I should be able to have mine replaced under warranty, right Microsoft? Right? What, no, you want me to buy a new console, OK no problem. ***** YOU!
- effinboy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Now I will fork over the money.
- joser916, on 10/12/2007, -4/+1"supply and demand"
- randomvictim, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2I wish they would have told us this before or else I wouldn't have wasted my money on the 360 I have now. I hardly ever use it, waiting for Halo 3 to come out.
- GhostToon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5I find it funny that more and more video game rumors are claimed to be "confirmed" the closer we get to April 1st. I don't consider anything confirmed until I hear it in a press release from Microsoft.
- otaleks, on 10/12/2007, -5/+6I wonder if the black 360 plays sports games (basketball) better than the white
- tw0k1ngs, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Black macbook already took all the racial humour out of multi-colored products. Welcome to Summer 2006.
- sexycommando, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2maybe if they make a yellow one, it will be better at math...
this racism is killing me
