What I'm really interested in is the bigger hard drive and the cooler running temp, and hopefully quieter operation. If they have the hard drive available separately and give you some kind of way to transfer the data from your current 20GB, I'll pick that up. The only way I'm upgrading my entire premium system is if they offer some kind of trade-in that takes a couple hundred bucks off the price (I can dream, can't I).
    • ilyag, on 10/12/2007, -22/+6I have 14 demos, about a dozen Xbox Live Arcade games, and a dozen or so movie and game trailers on my hard drive right now. I still have about 1.5 GB of free space. And if I needed a bit more space, I could always delete a few of the demos. It's not really necessary to have the bigger hard drive unless you actually want to do more with the system than the average person does (and i personally don't, although extra headroom is always comforting).

      If you want to buy movies and TV shows through Xbox Live Marketplace, though, 120 GB may still not be enough. I think that 250 GB seems more like the right number.
    • kodek, on 10/12/2007, -6/+28There's a downside to this: As HDMI becomes the preferred interface, movies will be able to force the ICT flag. Right now, the xbox's lack of HDMI is helping keep the ICT away from movies. Let me just quote the Wiki:

      "Also, the Microsoft Xbox360 game console, for which there is a HD-DVD add-on available, is only capable of analog non-HDCP-connections. If ICT would be forced, Microsoft's flagship console (note that MS is integral part of the HD-DVD camp, currently providing the VC-1 codec that is used in over 90% of all HD-DVD releases) would only be able to display a quarter of the actual resolution of the media, so movie studios are apparently in agreement to not include the ICT flag on any HD DVDs or Blu-ray Discs in the immediate future."

    • dvddesign, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16ICP: But that's IF it were forced. The studios for both formats have agreed to hold off till 2012 before enforcing any kind of flagged content for HDMI. So, basically, they gimped it at the last second and another generation of digital media gets to avoid this crap, thankfully.

      Now if we can get one format, they'll actually start selling these things. I'm not touching either format till the other is either gone, or made irrelevant.

      Actually, if you buy any kind of equipment at Best Buy and purchase the extended warranty, you can basically return it for a newer or different item. Just pay the difference. Ive been doing that for almost five years now, from the GB color to the GB advance to the XBOX to the XBOX 360. Ive actually saved a lot of money doing this, never had any trouble with returns.

They never saw the 360 as a final product after release... just another computer which would have inevitable upgrades to screw over the early adopters, thereby eliminating one of the primary reasons to get a home gaming console: uniformity of specs on the target platform. Hope you're all happy with this. If I had just bought a 360, like several friends of mine, I sure wouldn't be.

      And yes, we all know "no one's forcing anyone to buy it". That doesn't mean we have to approve of what Microsoft is doing to the home console industry. I don't want 12 versions of the same product. If I wanted to buy a million upgrades down the road to make my gaming machine better and better, I'd invest in a gaming PC. I want to buy a home console ONCE and be done with it.

      Just an FYI, you can bypass any ICT and DOT restrictions right now if you use the VGA cable, which does provide a digital path required by ICT and DOT.

      VGA uses an analog signal (wiki: "Video Graphics Array (VGA) is an analog computer display standard first marketed in 1987 by IBM.") If they enable ICT to movies, and you're either using a non-hdcp-capable display or an analog connection, the movie will either fall back to below-DVD quality, or simply show an error message.

      You almost have a point, but unfortunately you got something wrong.
      The $480 360 comes with a 120 GB hard drive. The $500 PS3 comes with a 20 GB hard drive, and you would have to pay to get a 60 GB one. Even if you did upgrade the PS3 (for a price), you couldn't equal the 120 GB hard drive that is already in the $480 price point. Then it just depends how important HD-DVD and Blu-Ray is to you.

      I don't think you can buy the 60 gig HDD to upgrade. The PS3 allows most 3.5" internal HDD. Therefore, you should stop trying to fight it. If high def movies are something you like, the PS3 and XBOX 360 have a very similar price.

      $20 more for a PS3 that has a HD disc player in it, and $680 total for a 360 with an HD-DVD drive. The only hardware advantage it has over the PS3 once you take the "Elite" 360 + HD-DVD add-on is 60 GB of HD space. And it's $80 more.
      Tons of PS3 detractors cited it's price as the biggest factor against it, and now a tricked out 360 is $80 more than the PS3.

    I was actually excited about the 'rumored' Black Xbox 360 features, but this is just a bloated Premium system. At least throw us a freakin' bone here, MS, and put in built-in Wifi (those recievers for Xbox you have to buy are a bloody rip-off).

      Also, I think you are missing the point of the black 360. Aren't they releasing the new system mainly due to their IPTV they are working on? That was the whole reason I was ready to trade my old one in for a new one. again, correct me if I'm wrong here.

    Actually for 20 dollars more you can get a 20Gb Ps3 With no Wifi, the only thing that still makes this a steal in terms of hardware only, is that its still cheap for a blu ray player

      Wifi still isn't amazing and when downloading the large demos and movies from XBL, a wired high speed connection is still probably going to be the first choice. I know with my Wii I'm wondering how this whole online via Wifi only.

      If it's anything less than 10Mbps... even 802.11b would be fine. A 100Mbps wired network in your house is nice... but when the pipe from outside is only 3Mbps...

      Distance and latency are still problems with WIFI though...
    • itsme92, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Yeah, but if you're like me, and my WRT54G is literally on the other side of the wall when I want to play, then Wi-fi is fine. I'm using my Macbook right there now. It's less than 10 feet from the router, but they have a wall between them, and I don't want to drill holes in my wall, I'd rather just use Wi-fi, for anything: game system, computer, printer, etc.

      Seriously. What's with all the hating on Wi-Fi over here. If you live in a house with no Ethernet running through it (like me) then it's practically the second coming of Christ, it's a lot cheaper and easier than running wires through my house.

    • Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -4/+2Although shielded cables prevent static, HDMI is always interference-free because of its digital signal. Component, however, is not entirely safe from interference, although shielded cables (like the ones the 360 brings) do help.

      Also, not every TV has VGA. My 32" Sylvania does 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i, has 2 component inputs, 2 composite, and an HDMI, and I still can't seem to find it's VGA/DVI-D port. Oh, it doesn't have one.

      Although VGA is very good and useful, it's not always available, even in TVs that have HDMI. So there's your answer.

This totally sucks. And almost makes me want to sell it now, for the HDMI interface. As far as I know this is the only way to upconvert DVD's to 720p, as component won't do it. Will the HDMI be able to upconvert DVD's???

    As for running cooler mine runs just fine.

    Although i question the NO WIFI or The HD DVD drive will not be internal or bundled -- Microsoft never did or nor does not currently have plans to put an HD DVD drive in the 360. That really bothers me. I mean it would raise the price a little of the system but it would cut cost of making an individual add-on that not everyone is buying. As for the Black color that is not important to me it doesn't effect my game play or functionality of the system.

    M$ why don't you listen to the consuners ?????

    Over all i will believe it when i see it. This could be a mod case or a very well done photo shop render

    XBox 360 Premium (~$400) + HD-DVD drive (~$200) + 12-month XBox Live Subscription (~$50) = [$650]

    Whereas,

    PS3 (which has a built in Blu-Ray drive, and no subscription fees for online play) = [~600]

    Now, i am completely impartial to all of the current consoles at the moment, because, in my opinion, none of them have nearly good enough software to even consider buying at this point. It seems to me like Microsoft is just splitting up the total cost of their product to make the illusion that it is cheaper than their competitor. The PS3 gets a lot of bad rep because of its cost but it almost seems more convenient to me too have the high-definition (HDDVD or Blu-Ray) built in to the console.

      From a gaming perspective the XBOX is the better deal hands down

      Hell, I bought a brand new 360 off of eBay for $320 back in January. I bought one for a friend last August for $360.
      Let's also look at what you get for your $50 for XBL.

      Ranked matches, private matches, player performance ranking, voice chat in all games (even when watching movies), leaderboards, videochat support, etc... I'm okay with spending $40-50 a year for that versus "free's" T9 based web browser and half assed voice chat support.

      Not having a HDTV is not really a valid argument, I hate when people say that. I didn't have a HDTV the first 3 weeks I had my PS3 and I was still pretty damn impressed. (Now that I have my HDTV, I'm even more impressed.) It's more than graphics, it about the size and scope of the game too.

      If you can have a player (Blu-Ray or HD-DVD) that can play both formats old and new, why would you want to limit yourself to what a game developer can put on a DVD? That's like telling the developers to work with a technology that isn't as good because you don't give a crap even though it will effect your gaming experience.

      That is a stupid argument. I will gladly keep the $200 and get of my ass once in awhile and swap disks if the devs need more space.

      But with nearly every other aspect of HD-DVD and Blu-Ray being superior such as being True HD content, throughput etc, at least in my opinion, I see it being the near future for gaming. Yeah, I'm a genius huh? Since it's already here. :)

      Which ever format ends up winning, game developers are always wanting to push what a system can do. DVD is the most limited of those technologies, so just by the nature of the technological beast, it will end up being slowly phased out.

      I don't have anything against multi-disc games, the first final fantasy for the PS-one was 5 discs I think, it rocked. But if developers have the technology to put all the content in one disc, I can't see them choosing to split it up. I could very well be wrong though.

      The key phrase is at some point in the future. Blu-Ray for the PS3 is useful for movie viewing. Because it is a first generation drive it is SLOW. Compare the load times on any similar 360/PS3 game (yes it is quieter however....). One of these formats will be used a lot in gaming, just not in the near future

      Amen to that, I just finished installing vista off of my 7 thousand floppy disks. Then I played some Ninja Gaiden off my 3,000 floppies. But atleast I'm not blowing my money on a DVD player like you chumps.

      In other news, you'll never need more than 64kb of RAM.

    Otherwise, pretty crappy really - When my 360 fails it just means i'll be paying more for one that fits in with my ps3, screen, keyboard and pc. Still, a positive piece of news for people who don't yet own a 360, means they can get a better piece of kit than the rest of us (Those that own one).

    for example. If i buy a game or movie i should be able to transfer it to my PC than to my Archos and Vice a Versa !!! I find a bigger HD redundant if i can fluently interact with it's full capabilities. This whole cutting off the hands of the consumer and owners over copy right crap is getting ridicules. If i buy it i own it. PERIOD !

    The article states that the 360 Elite will be in limited quantities; after it has been sold out, the 360 Premium will have all the 360 Elite features sans the black color. I mean, doesn't it make sense to just wait until the 360 Elite sells out and then grab the 360 Premium (when it's updated to 120GB, HDMI, cooler cpu, etc. and has all the same features as the 360 Elite) at a $100 lower?

    that's the whole point. i have a 360, but don't want an HD DVD format right now, so I CHOOSE not to buy it, it's not an included cost that I will never use.

    As for the cost of xbox live.........don't even try online console gaming on another system.
