- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -4/+65With $1,499, why don't you just buy a HDTV that supports the PS3?
- thebuggalo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+53Sounds like Sony is gonna pull a Capcom...
"Can't read the text in Dead Rising on a SDTV.... buy a new HDTV!" - Yez70, on 10/12/2007, -2/+48Odd - I have a $99 up-convert Toshiba DVD player that does the same thing...
- Jawshy, on 10/12/2007, -3/+44dugg for the title
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -6/+47Only 150,000 sony points!
- OnoTadaki, on 10/12/2007, -6/+36Don't get me wrong. I'm a huge Nintendo fanboy. I even camped out to get a Wii, and never plan on buying a PS3, but what was the point of your comment? You make fun of PS3 saying that it's the weakest link and the Wii is better solely because the PS3 doesn't have support for 1080i. Last I checked the Wii didn't either.
- Justin6512, on 10/12/2007, -1/+29@ Yez70
It's cheeper because it doesn't have the coveted Sony logo on it. :P - FaNtAsMa, on 10/12/2007, -12/+40Your description makes it sound like Sony themselves is actually offering this thing as a solution, but it's just some random fanboy that posts on their forums.. Very misleading and buried because it's inaccurate.
- Bob042, on 10/12/2007, -10/+35Why would you want to buy an HDTV for the PS3 if you already have an HDTV?
- knodi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22http://www.sonystyle.ca/commerce/servlet/ProductDetailDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001&productId=1002535&navigationPath=33000n32100n32108n46020
- Hegemony, on 10/12/2007, -5/+22Kevin and Alex are right, Sony is run entirely by Roombas.
- JavertHolmes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+18Future Digg frontpage stories:
1) Sony offers Digibeta deck for $30,000 as storage solution for people who want to record their PS3 gaming sessions.
2) Sony offers $20,000 XDCAM disk player for those who complain of PS2's DVD picture quality.
3) Sony selling $400,000,000 R+D lab for those who seek better launch game lineup.
Zealots will be the death of Digg. If you want Digg to become a self-masturbatory zeitgeist of dangerously fluctuating mob mentality, then keep posting ***** like this and keep digging it to the front page. - snowpatrol, on 10/12/2007, -2/+16@Bob042
So you don't need to give even more of your precious hard earned cash to the evil, evil Sony corp. - KiSA, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14@apoc06
haha, sony sucks - omaryak, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10No, sweet *zombie* Jesus. Get it right.
- furtwan1, on 10/12/2007, -3/+11@Ono
the point is that for $200 less you can get a 360 that DOES support 1080i.
It also has better games IMO... - charlie55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+82002 called, they wanted their weakest link jokes back.
- Qacer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I would take some caution using upscaler devices for the PS3. I've been looking into these devices and some of them have a significant delay. Some devices include an additional audio delay to synchronize the upscaled video with the audio.
For movies, this audio and video delay is fine because you do not have any interaction with the movie. However, if you are playing PS3 games, then it may be possible that you may notice a control lag. - chromerium, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7The product linked is an A/V receiver, and a pretty damn nice one from the specs.
That A/V receiver can take all the following video inputs from every device you have:
S-Video Input(s): 5 (1 Front, 4 Rear)
Composite Video Input(s): 5 (1 Front, 4 Rear)
Optical Audio Input(s): 5 (1 Front, 4 Rear)
Coaxial Audio Digital Input(s): 3 (Rear)
RCA Audio Input(s): 5
Multi-Channel Input(s): 1 (Rear, 7.1 Channel)
HD Component Video Input(s): 3 (Rear)
HDMI™ Connection Input(s): 3 (Rear)
And scale it to whatever HDMI display you plug into it, and drive 7 speakers at 120W per channel.
Its a little bit more than just a upconverter for Sony's PS3.
Buried. - elnerdo, on 10/12/2007, -5/+10Hmm, first you replaced the S in Sony with a dollar sign. Creative! Where have I seen that before, though? Oh yeah, morons who use the symbol M$, that's where.
Next, you use the phrase: 'Enjoys shooting them selfs'
You got the verb right (If you're American), Though, 'themselves' is the correct word for what you're going for there, and even then, that's wrong. 'Itself' is probably the best choice.
Seriously, why do you post things? - slaystench, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8This isn't official, why is this making front page?
Buried. - MrObjectional, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5How's it go? You need milk with your Oreos, and then you need Oreos for your milk?
So as in I buy a PS3 for my HDTV, and now I need an HDTV for me PS3.
Brilliant. - spudnic, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8Grow up, advertising is a fact of life. It's only a problem when it changes editorial content, which it certainly hasn't on Diggnation or TWiT
- Zanick, on 10/12/2007, -8/+12You mean my Gundam isn't going to look good until I buy this !!!???
- ernkush, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Actually I do have such a TV (CRT) with only 480i, 480p and 1080i. I bought the TV about 5 years ago when HDTV's were still a new thing.
- soulscreme, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5Umm, no.
I mean, this thing is for people with elaborate set-ups. This is not convenient solution, it's a high-end product for ridiculously rich people who want to have EVERYTHING in 1080p including their Atari 2600. - gcauthon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Well how many people actually have their PS3 hooked up to an HDTV? How many people have even taken it out of the box? We're looking at an extremely infinitesimal amount, I agree.
- hamstereater, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2do something about it crybaby
- DarthPoo, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9A lot of people have slightly older, mainly crt, displays with 1080i only. By the way, what the hell is 780i?
- soulscreme, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, this stuff is not entirely my domain. I'm a programmer.
- sdwilly, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Actually there is a mistake in the original post.. The first picture is a 3200ES, where the menu is a 5200ES (Biggest difference is that the 3200 only has dual HDMI on the rear, where the 5200ES has 3).
Either way ES Receivers are fairly decent for the price.. Not like McIntosh but not bad.. - soulscreme, on 10/12/2007, -13/+15Ugh, Seriously cannot believe this got front paged. The same topic is on the page 3 times and this isn't even close to an accurate article on the matter. Basically the Sony Rep said he shouldn't have said anything before having talked to hid developers and that nothing would be confirmed until they sat down and saw what they could do. I mean, honestly, it'll take the devs a bit to figure out the best way to handle the scaling issue. I think that they'll be able to work around it. Does anybody actually have a TV with 1080i only? I bought my TV for only like $600 and it came with 480i, 480p, 720i, 720p, and 1080i. Something tells me that this isn't really effecting a TON of users. Kind of like those 360 overheating issues that only struck a small number of highly vocal people.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2"it came with 480i, 480p, 720i, 720p, and 1080i."
Hahah..time to RTFM. - PixelVision, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5There is no 720i
- soulscreme, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3mrRB, sharing an opinion is fine. The problem is stories that are bogus or posted 3 times. No excuse for duplicates in the front page other than bias or poor management.
- Atomic1fire, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6I just realized that this is FUD; software upscalers have been around since forever... *yawn* next article
haha now the last person has to waste money - apoc06, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4interesting theory, but I don't believe it.
on the other hand, i have noticed that the Microsoft bashing articles making the front page have subsided tremendously over the last year. - tavisjohn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2If you spent in $5,000 on a PS3 on EBAY then this is the product for you!!!
- alienSkull, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1damn.... i guess i got stuck with the bad news...
- Metlprocker, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1$1500? You can probably find a new 720p tv for that much? lol
- addisonj, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ soulscreme
Hmmmm... soooo your saying a podcast that is simply sponsored by Microsoft has been bought and paid for by MS so much that they changed there algorithm on digg... Hmmm... yeah your an idiot, the only thing that has changed around here is the makeup of the user base... Digg is the middle child of social news sites, its got some of the linux slashdot folks, the social-browsing-blogging windows using types, and the ever present mac fanatics. Same goes for consoles
and just FYI, we love to hate sony, and have for a few years, ridicule of those who bought sony TV's and PC's because they were overpriced, the rootkit scandal, the battery scandal, ps3 prices, and huge launch shortages. Come on, its not a conspiracy, digg simply attracts a certain demographic and that happens to be a group that (at the moment) has a lot of anti-sony folks. - charlie55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2i really would like to see the stats on the percentage of hdtvs out there that this sony issue effects. i am guessing it is less than 5%.
- mrgreen4242, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Actually I do have such a TV (CRT) with only 480i, 480p and 1080i. I bought the TV about 5 years ago when HDTV's were still a new thing."
Same here, except I bought it about 18 months ago because I could get a 30" HDTV for under $400 at the time, which was a pretty great price compared to the plasmas, etc. - P5ycHo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The problem isn't with the PS3. The problem is with the HDTV's which won't accept a 720p HDTV standard signal.
You should have bought a real HDTV. Get over it. - JavertHolmes, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5"or you can always go where that already exists, slashdot."
Slashdot definitely has its own set of issues, but at least on Slashdot I can say "Oh, there's editor X again letting story Y pushing agenda Z make it to the front page."
Here, all I can do is shake my head and ask myself rhetorically "Why did 281 people and counting think this was front page-worthy?" - AzraelKans, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hmm.. guys this may sound weird but this is digg, you actually have to read the comments on an article to know if it is BS before digging it. Yes I know its weird but its true.
This post in particular is complete crap leading to a (drumroll please) _forum post_ (not even a blog) and is absolutely inaccurate, Sony builds this upscalers for years, it is not a solution and actually it wont even fix the PS3 problem. You read that right it wont even FIX the problem.
Also as a complete paradox chances are you wont even read this comment, and will post a comment such as:
Sony screwing up again! Crap Sony what were you thinking!? Bad! Sony Bad! (rolls a newspaper)
Damn bastards sucking me dry! (you dont even have a ps3 much less an hdtv but ok)
Great solution sony! now let me buy instant ramen for life to pay it (you were already in an strict instant ramen, fare bus, selling blood diet )
Doing the Capcom dead rising thing! (uh, yes apparently the only reason you buy dead rising is to read long winded inspirational text in a 6 inch tv, you are unable to do that without an imax screen though)
ETc. etc.
Buried as LAME - HappyScrappy, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3"hardware analog scaling chip"
Scaling is not done analog.
You can (trivially) do horizontal scaling analog. Since each pixel along the horizontal line is sent out sequentially, you can just hold the previous pixel or "glissando" between them easily and with analog circuitry.
However, vertical scaling is different. Now you need to interpolate between pixels that are not sent out sequentially. This means you have to look up the pixel in the line above and interpolate between them. This is not done easily in analog. So it is always done digital.
It gets even worse when you convert between progressive and interlaced, as is the case here (720p->1080i).
So, poster doesn't know what he's talking about, he makes an inaccurate summary.
Additionally, Sony didn't suggest this, someone on the playstation forums did.
If you don't have accurate information and don't know what you are talking about, please refrain from posting BS articles on Digg.
Thank you.
Marked as inaccurate. - ryangravener, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Why would you buy an HDTV which did not support the lowest level of HD available (720p)? Maybe next time people buy something they will do some research. The people with this problem should hold their tv manufacturer responsible or themselves.
- mrRB, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2People actually share an opinion on a website dedicated to sharing opinions?! What you say?!
- videokrazy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1here is a link to something that will work http://www.enhancedht.com/page/EHT/PROD/SC/SC-IHDp
