- camintmier, on 10/12/2007, -7/+9Interesting, I'll have to try this.
- wuki, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6nice will try this
- Jaxor, on 10/12/2007, -108/+12Uhh... I don't see anything like the title suggests.
Am I supposed to search for "Burn Gamecube ISO's to Mini-DVD"? If so how can I dig this if I have to do the searching myself?
Honestly, am I missing something here?- teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -49/+15click the link and its right there my friend
- Seumas, on 10/12/2007, -40/+9Er . . . No. The link this digg goes to is a long forum post titled:
"TUTORIAL: How to play backups w/o mod chip, only Max Drive Pro Memcard"
The third sentence on the page is:
"I will post a tutorial on how ridiculously ez it is to go from just a gamecube to being able to back up GC games!"
So you must be missing something . . . ? - teamparadox, on 10/12/2007, -40/+5click the link and its right there my friend
- Jaxor, on 10/12/2007, -60/+24Strange- my browser takes me to this page http://forums.afterdawn.com, but the address matches the title link.
Anyone else having this problem? I'm using IE 6.0.2800 on a win2k sp4...

- djork, on 10/28/2007, -83/+15Umm, how about we keep stories about pirating games off the front page?
- Seumas, on 10/12/2007, -3/+30This is about backing up your games and being able to play them. If you can't play your backed up games, what is the point in backing them up?
- thedove, on 10/12/2007, -1/+32yeah, i wouldn't call it pirating..it can certainly be used for that, but backing up games is what it's suggesting.
- diskopo, on 10/12/2007, -4/+15Looks like that's what the people want to see.
- inkswamp, on 10/12/2007, -1/+53No kids in your household, I take it?
I own a GameCube and have two children, both of whom love playing it. Children love to do silly things (no matter how many times you warn them) like scrape the disc when putting it in the console or use it as a hockey puck on the coffee table or throw it in the air. The scratches on the disc surface can lead to nonfunctioning games. There are loads of legitimate, legal reasons to backup your software. What's your problem with that?
I've found that those who scream the loudest about the wrongdoing of others are usually the worst offenders, so keep your accusations of piracy to yourself--where it probably belongs. - Mesach, on 10/12/2007, -0/+25Actually the biggest offenders do not say a damn thing, they know better...
*quietly strolls away - Bluezdood, on 10/12/2007, -28/+1No can do dork, I mean djork.
- Crazy_8, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I need to do something similar for my PSP. I love the PSP, I love (most) of the games, but I hate the UMD format. I've had two UMDs break on me already. That clear plastic window on the top keeps caving in because its freaking GLUED on. But back to the topic, yea, i'd call this backing up so the disc you paid for doesn't get raped from scratches (or in my case, a broken cartrige because they are made so cheepo). :S
- Brutis, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10finally an easily understood method to do this, been waiting for years
- Cataclysm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1couldn't said it better
- wtfdan, on 10/12/2007, -25/+14Right. Play backups.
There's only one problem. How did you back up the games if you don't have a modded Gamecube?
Unless you did it with a different cube, you'd have no reason to read this assuming you aren't pirating games. I'm not digging it.
Besides, a hardware mod is just as easy.- shotgun, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5You do have a point, he even says to find some torrents or usenet for the gc iso files. This method is obviously not useful in backing up the games. Would be nice if the usb/memory card deal could interface with the data on the disc and you could make iso' but this isn't the case. (as I thought it was first glance)
- WermerSkoch, on 10/12/2007, -2/+19Well, if I own an un-modded GameCube, and a copy of Mario Kart, and my Mario Kart disk gets broken/scratched/whatever.. It's perfectly legal for me to get on thepiratebay or seedler or whatever, and download an ISO. So in that sense, I would be getting a backup of my game, even if it didn't come from the disk I purchased. When you buy a game, you're not buying the disk -- you're buying the license to use it.... plus a bit for the disk ;)
- Silent-Bob, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6What's to stop someone from downloading a backup when they still own the original?
- TrueVox, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6This is in response to wermerskoch (god, I wish we had REAL threaded comments...): As far as I'm aware, just because you own the original does not give you the right to download a backup. If YOU wanna MAKE your own backup, I *THINK* that's protected, as long as there's no DMCA violations. However, that's hard to do nowadays. If owning the original gave you the right to download a copy, then the P2P networks would be in a much stronger position: just ensure that everyone sharing with a good upstream owns what they're sharing, and the downloaders (if they're trackable at all, which in my experiance doesn't seem to happen often) claim to be just downloading "backups". However, since that's not the case, the folks sharing get nailed.
Yes, it's stupid. Yes, I do think it's morally wrong. No, the people in charge don't care what I think, and the answer is 42. I think that takes care of all future questions. :)
Oh, and of course, this is just my 2 cents, and IANAL. - Zonkzor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10"Well, if I own an un-modded GameCube, and a copy of Mario Kart, and my Mario Kart disk gets broken/scratched/whatever.. It's perfectly legal for me to get on thepiratebay or seedler or whatever, and download an ISO."
Actually, since in order to download data on bittorrent you must also upload, you are distributing copyrighted content to others. That is not legal. - wtfdan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10It is illegal to download an image of a game, unless you own the game, and made that image.
Unless the source disc was your disc used for the backup, you are committing copyright infringement by downloading the image.
I don't like it, but it's the truth.
- xeigen, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9The title makes it sound like all you have to do is burn a game to a disk...

PSO Glitch and the one gamecube tool to upfront the data to PC (forgot name), plus a broadband adapter. - zbeast, on 10/12/2007, -17/+7I would be all over this but theres like 4 games for the game cube that worth playing.
So it hardly pays for itself.
They should have come out with this about 2 years ago.- craz, on 10/12/2007, -18/+4Agreed. Its a shame GC is a dieing console or this information woul have been really usefull

+Digg - fugitivALiEN, on 10/28/2007, -1/+9Backup is right man... I've got 2 kids 3 and 1, game discs don't survive long!!! They always manage to get to them somehow despite everything being out of reach... hmm, is that why there are tiny footprints on the end tables...
- paleck, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4OLD. Anyone who mods there gamecube knows this isnt the most effective way to do this.
- EricB, on 10/12/2007, -16/+4Now I just need to care about Gamecube. Good if you are a family man, I suppose.
- ductoogle, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Me likes it.
P.S.: for you stupid people when he says play your back ups he means backups you downloaded. gasp That was hard. - Forse, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Oh this is actually cool. My GC was sitting there doing nothing so I might as well try this. Heh time to search for *.iso files for GC ;)
- zaofreek, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4This is awesome...my GC will -not- read discs with any scratches on them. I have a hard time running any games because of this. I'll definitely be trying this out.
- Alexio, on 10/12/2007, -4/+4Well it took long enough. For a long time I thought the GC was one of the only consoles not affected by common piracy. Now I guess it's the same as the rest of them.
- Sirocco, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Long live ze cube!
- G33KFR33K, on 10/12/2007, -9/+3Old. People have been using PSO to do the exact same thing for years.
- neozeed, on 10/28/2007, -11/+9it was wanton piracy that killed the dreamcast... You do realize that if you kill Nintendo, Microsoft wins since Sony has stumbled hard right?
dig--- TRUEPATRIOT, on 10/28/2007, -1/+16what the hell are you talking about? piracy did not kill the dreamcast Sega not having enough money killed sega that and the lagging sales once ps2 hit.i dont think piracy can ever destroy a console since it takes a bit more effort to get those games and play them if your completely new to the mod scene.
- Matt2k, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Piracy killed the Commodore 64, too, as well as most of the early personal computers. There was NO-ONE that really ever bought anything for those systems.
- aurifex, on 10/12/2007, -11/+1Yay.
- RichMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nice, that's a cool method because no pc is needed to connect to.
When I wanted to play gamecube backups, I would boot up in Phantasy Star Online, then, with my custom network settings, connect to my computer and use Phoenix to upload GCOS to the gamecube, from there I choose to boot a backup, and put in a dvd backup and play :-)
Too bad Nintendo never made a harddrive addon to the gamecube, I would've LOVED to have a gamecube that booted games from a harddrive. Perhaps this'll be done with the Revolution (since it'll need some type of storage to hold the oldschool roms- moofree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been using Phantasy Star Online 1&2 to play my gamecube 'backups' for months.
You can stream alot of game isos from your computer over the network adapter (with some slowdown) with various tools (best one is gc simulator repack- google for s3-gcsimr)
Also, over the network adapter, you can back up and restore memory card saves (google for ctr-gcs)
Also, there's a gamecube debugging program that i've never used called gcnrd (iirc). You can use this to dump the ram and other nifty things over the network adapter.
ALSO (too many alsos) you can back up your games using gcos and the broadband adapter or one of the several other biosses.
Oh yeah, gclinux of course. It's cool, debian based, and with a little hacking, you can mplayer things over the bba.
I find that ritek g04s (i use office depot mini dvd-rs) work pretty well, though i need to adjust my laser pot so i don't have to use these (expensive). Most other dvdrs give disk read errors while loading.
Just pull the case off of your gamecube (use a __clear__ bic pen and a lighter to unscrew the gamebit screws), tape down the drive lid sensor, and you can use full size dvds. You can also find replacement cases online. - russizm, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The PSO method is so old and outdated...
I used it to play AC (which is the only thing that it was actually meant to play) but almost every game with that method has some sort of glitch/crash/slowness/weird sound problem.
The broadband adapter just can't handle big games. - moofree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I used it to play AC (which is the only thing that it was actually meant to play)"
You're talking about the animal crossing loader.
The GC Simulator is a totally different program. The repack does introduce some weird sound glitches while loading (weird buzzing sound), but it has a relatively high compatibility, and almost never crashes (so long as you can get the game to load)
It runs the broadband adapter at 100mbit/sec, but since the serial port that the bba hooks into is only about 25mbit/s (23 i think?), i limit it to 20mbps.
The animal crossing loader only did 10mb/s.
While there is some slowdown with gcsim, it does run many games. Prince of perisas work (including two thrones), both metroid primes work, zelda four swords, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, Super Mario Sunshine, Mario Strikers, Gun, umm... what else... There's alot of games that work (but i've lately just been putting them on dvd-rs)
You're right, the PSO 1&2 method is old, but it still works. You can psul/psoload any .dol you want. I bet the maxdrive method is cheaper, but there's alot of nifty things you can do with the Broadband adapter. (hell, i just want to get a qoob)
- moofree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I've been using Phantasy Star Online 1&2 to play my gamecube 'backups' for months.
- doggyboy, on 10/12/2007, -11/+2Is there a website that the .iso images are or is there mods I have to do for the GC?
- hipsterelitist, on 10/12/2007, -12/+3lack of pirating ability has been the one thing keeping me from buying a game cube, which in my mind is the only currently available system worth having.
- looneyboy784, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3Bah. I've been doing this for like 30 years jeez get with the times...
good post spread knowledge of fair use. - Mister.Joshua, on 10/12/2007, -10/+5If this had happened two or three years ago, Gamecube might have been as successful as Xbox in the US.
- CyberSmackdown, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8In terms of lost revenue due to piracy?
- Mister.Joshua, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3It cracks me up how everyone online is so pro-piracy when it comes to mp3 files, but totally against it when it comes to games. I don't have a study to back me up. I hope someone does one. It just seems like common sense to me that piracy would have the same effect on console games that it has on music, i.e. increased revenue.
Everyone I know who owns an Xbox has modded it in some way. Just about all the publicity I've seen related to Xbox has been about modding. Subjective, sure, but do YOU have any proof that mod chips HARMED the Xbox?
I believe that hardware mods contributed greatly to the success of the Xbox. Look at the hundreds of unlicensed third-party products developed around illegal mods. Look how many times Kevin Rose, for example, has talked about Xbox mods on television. Look at the after-market in BROKEN Xboxes. There is a HUGE market around modified hardware. People want to get ahold of those machines! I don't think it's such a leap to believe that this massive pirate market also contributes to Microsoft's profit in a way analogous to pirate mp3 files and the music industry. Just like most music pirates, I buy a lot more Xbox games due to my pirate activity than I would have otherwise--sometimes three or four copies for system link play. How many Gamecube games have I purchased? ZERO.
If you want to down-mod me without considering the argument, though, so be it. It's your right to be ignorant.
- bpinard, on 10/28/2007, -6/+12Yet another reason why Pirates are better than Ninjas.
- ahhell, on 10/28/2007, -0/+3Uh...isn't that memory card essentially a "mod chip".
I was hoping there was a way of playing backups without having to buy anything.- russizm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1a mod chip would actually have to be installed onto the hardware of the system. It would require soldering.
This does not.
- russizm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1a mod chip would actually have to be installed onto the hardware of the system. It would require soldering.
- Spencerocks, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4This sounds mighty illegal.
- serpentor, on 10/28/2007, -3/+2Have to agree with other posters, the GC would've done better had this come out earlier. I skipped the PS2 and Xbox b/c I didn't think either had any games even worth pirating. Others obviously disagree. I'd consider GC now but I already have my sights set on a DS Lite.
- SidewalkPilot, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3Illegal, isn't it?
- OneAndOnlySnob, on 10/12/2007, -11/+5Cool, how to pirate games for the console by the only trustworthy console company. The one that is losing marketshare every day. Right on the front page. Thanks digg.
- peruytu, on 10/12/2007, -21/+2What is it with people and their obsession to keep nintendo alive!? If something sucks and keeps on sucking, then it will die, and there's nothing you nintendo fanboys can do about it. Besides, piracy has never killed a system. People have been pirating PS1 and PS2 games for years, and Sony continues to be the leader in the video game market. And the only thing that's keeping nintendo alive is of course their handheld system which of course has a competitor in the form of the PSP. Like it or not, nintendo's days are numbered. New designs of handhelds or the Revolution will not stop the inevitable. Live with it!
- moofree, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Piracy was one of the major factors that killed the dreamcast.
Nintendo's not dead, they just don't have the market share that microsoft and sony have. They make solid systems, and make fun games. That's I ever expected from nintendo.
And they actually profit from selling their systems (unlike the MS and Sony that sell their hardware at a loss)
Thumbs down for the troll.
- moofree, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Piracy was one of the major factors that killed the dreamcast.
- russizm, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Anyone know if there are solderless mod chips for gc yet?
I would much rather have a hardware mod than switch out discs every time i want to play something.- moofree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nope, no solderless modchips that i know of.
The ninja mod and qoob chips only have like 6 or 7 wires, I don't have one, but my friend does. He got it installed in 15 minutes with no headaches.
- moofree, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Nope, no solderless modchips that i know of.
- jonesey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I'll give it a digg. I chipped mine last year and am loving the extra features it gives me: Besides being able to play 'backups', the cube is now region free, and you can force it to output everything in high def (as long as you have one of the early cubes with the digital out port)
- moofree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2You need a qoob modchip to force progressive scan. I guess you have a qoob. They seem to be the best.
- 16bit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+13Nintendo does not suck. I find it refreshing that they live with the spirit of classic gaming. If there ever was a company that had "esprit de corps" it's Nintendo. They are proud of who they are and what they do. They have the money to back just about any project, but aren't in the industry JUST for the money.
Ask the guys at Nintendo about how they feel about gaming, then ask the guys at Sony. You will get seriously different answers on where the industry is going and where it should be.
It's nice that you care about graphics and your Playstations and your year after year of Madden, but it's not doing anything for the future of gaming, just vaccumming money.- yugiohdan6, on 10/28/2007, -1/+5i agree the gamecube actually has better graphics then the ps2 and not to mention there aren't as many good games on ps2 like there are on gamecube like mario kart, super mario sunshine, animal crossing, pikmin, super smash bros., etc
- BassCadet, on 10/12/2007, -12/+1Whoa whoa whoa.
Is this fo REAL? - STKD, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1Jebus this news is OLD. This has been known about and done for over a year now via PSO.
- helfire, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3This is different than PSO, your not streaming the game in this method so no slow loads and no huge setup just to play the game. Just bot and swap, much nicer.
- heysuburbia, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Qoob is a solderless mod chip, but I recommend going with the Viper Extreme, it's fairly easy.
Links to both chips:
http://basicfunction.com/html/?postid=61- onceler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Qoob is not solderless. What I do find odd about the Maxdrive mod is that it costs that same as modchips.
- coptimus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Qoob is only solderless if you consider that you don't need to solder the wires to the Qoob chip. There is soldering to be done on the Mobo of the Gamecube itself. However, this is even easier than an Xbox solder job.
- joehobbes, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I would go through all of this to play retail ISOs, but the emulator possibilities sounds great as an alternative to my Dreamcast -- especially with my Wavebirds!
- TheJackal, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1FYI... To use your Wavebirds with this you need to hold down the start button while you boot the MDP Disk.
- PhoneGuy, on 10/12/2007, -9/+0What's a GameCube?
Now tell me womething I really wanna know ... will it work with my Sega Master System? And will I once again enjoy the skateboard riding antics of WonderBoy? - DigeratiPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5why bother? the gamecube games are relatively cheap and when you add up the cost of buying the max drive pro, mini-dvd-r's, a dvd-burner (if you dont already have one), plus the time it takes to download dumped iso's, and the steps to boot from the 'backups', its not worth it imo.
I'd rather just buy the kids a game once and a while so they can actually enjoy it, rather then 'spoil' them and the experience by dumping a bunch of blank discs next to the NGC. Plus I would be in line with the law, and be supporting one of my favorite companies.- heysuburbia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3DVD's are about 40cents each, a burner is 80$, and a mod chip is 50$.
I can "get" 10 ISO's overnight. SO......
For 142$ and 3 nights I can have 30 Games which would cost 1000$ - 1500$.
Also, the ISO's are usually out before the game hits the shelves (Especially for people in the UK)
I still buy games I REALLY want and just play ISO's of games I wouldn't buy anyway.
- heysuburbia, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3DVD's are about 40cents each, a burner is 80$, and a mod chip is 50$.
- acemilo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I already have a hardmod (viper chip) so this is useless for me, but this is definitely cool. You could probably do this with the cobra bios if you decrypt it.
- akatrito, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2hmm i dunno, after reading that whole article, i think the EVO Edition looks like a better buy...looks more deluxe....
you know someone would even after he said PRO only. ;) - dclowd9901, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Look forward to trying this. Thanks to the pervasive bastard who put it together.
- Jaxor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4LOL! This is the most negative story I've seen yet in terms of comment diggs. [view show all]

Take it easy- with the rating system! :)
[here comes the diggs...] - bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -7/+4Ha... yeah... "backups"... right.
Not fond of piracy crap getting on the front page here.- bpapa, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3OH WHAT A SUPRISE the teenagers rain down with a "burial" since they disagree with me. How about getting a job and paying for your own stuff?
