Bungie Game Reveal Blocked By Publisher
kotaku.com — Today, a letter has been posted on the front page of the developer's website. Signed by Harold Ryan, Bungie's president, it says that the team were planning on revealing a new game at E3 this week, but their "plans were just changed by our publisher", so they won't be showing anything. Bummer.

- strictnein, on 07/16/2008, -21/+1Ughh... annoying *****. I thought Bungie was out from under the thumb of everyone?
Rumor: Sounds like the FFXIII announcement was added at the very last minute so Bungie got bumped from MS's E3 presentation. Why that would cause them to also cancel their reveal tomorrow is beyond me.- B1663r, on 07/16/2008, -2/+11Everyone seems to have forgotten...
Microsoft has right of first refusal as publisher of any new Bungie properties. - Nobi-Wan, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Yeah it's annoying... but what's the big deal? It's not as if it's a game we know anything about or that's been delayed time and time again. It's not even announced yet. Just be patient and I'm sure it'll be something cool enough that'll be worth the wait.
Most people seem to forget that making video games is a business and it was a business decision and probably for a reason that'll do more good than harm.

It's wiki, don't listen to it.- AdmiralKarelia, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1If I recall correctly, Jason Jones is technically the president, being the only remaining founder. He's also listed first on Bungie's "Meet the Team" page. He used to be co-founder with Alex Seropian, who was the president and CEO, but I believe Jason took over that job when Alex left.

- Archfiend, on 07/16/2008, -0/+4Confused as to why people are obsessed with 7? It's in reference to Bungie's popular "pre-Halo" FPS, Marathon. Quite often, there were references to the number 7, whether it be the number of enemies in a room to the number of rooms in a level. Further research of this "phenomenon" can be found at http://marathon.bungie.org/story/seven.html

- Quicksilver4648, on 07/16/2008, -20/+6Bungie is independent. Microsoft has NO control over them. They only own the Halo license.
- SupaDawg, on 07/16/2008, -3/+10Microsoft is the exclusive publisher for Bungie. Hence "right of first refusal". Quicksilver, you best bone up on your facts.

- B1663r, on 07/16/2008, -1/+7crowbar77,
They can make ps3 games if Microsoft refuses to publish their game. Thus the whole right of first refusal thing.

- Wiinii, on 07/16/2008, -6/+82I am going to toss out a theory on this, it's more than just a new Halo game...it's also about the motion controller.
EGM magazine said it over a year ago; Bungie is working on a new Halo game that will be bundled with a motion controller, see the EGM magazine clip for yourself here: http://arcade-junkies.com/2008/07/e3-2008-set-to-b ...
Nintendo revealed their Wiimote 1:1 add-on before Microsoft's press conference. Why? Because their intel told them that Microsoft was releasing one with true 1:1 control. Nintendo eludes to the fact that they knew others would follow what they're doing several times during their press conference, saying that they can't just sit still on their success.
Microsoft also suspected that Sony was revealing a motion controller, so they thought 'let's see what Sony reveals first, and we'll reveal ours after them on Wednesday to steal back the thunder'.
Think about this last point; every single major Microsoft leak came true (Avatars, Lips, and even the 3D dashboard) accept the biggest one of them all, the motion controller.- Caleb83, on 07/16/2008, -2/+28eludes/alludes, accept/except. sorry, but someone was bound to do it.

- Myonosken, on 07/16/2008, -0/+7If they're trying to do a marketing stunt, why would anyone in the company be allowed to tell people outside? Especially one who runs a popular site and would have put it on the web?

- MillionsLivio, on 07/16/2008, -3/+2Had they previously stated they would reveal any game at E3? If not, why would they even post about not being able to show a game that they had not previously mentioned to the public? This is obviously a marketing campaign, a rather lame one at that, and I expect they will show a trailer at the end of E3.
- kuwan, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1I haven't followed their updates very well but I wasn't expecting any announcement at E3. They have, however, been making a lot of noise about the upcoming Penny Arcade Expo at the end of August. I saw no evidence from Bungie that they'd be announcing anything at E3 but there's been a lot of "you might want to go to the Penny Arcade Expo if you can - hint hint, wink wink" type of messages in their weekly updates for some time.

- MacDevyn, on 07/16/2008, -4/+3Its all a scheme to build up hype for their new game. Bungie is known for their viral marketing and this is no exception. Bungie even posted when their site was down "expect delays". This was planned and we'll see stuff about their new project within the week.
- soot, on 07/16/2008, -0/+20I was positive it was a marketing hoax at first, but now I'm not so sure.
Some people are suggesting that the publisher (Microsoft) made the decision to axe the announcement because there were no big surprises from the competition's keynote this year (Sony). From a commercial perspective they probably decided to wait until "the right time" to show it.

So... are any of you following this? For those not in the know, the newly independent Bungie Studios was supposed to have a HUGE announcement during E3. Most people assumed it would happen on Monday during the MS Press Conference. It didn't... however www.bungie.net was changed to reflect some Superintendent stuff with a countdown timer (leading to 0700 Pacific Time... Bungie is huge on 7's).
Now, exactly 12 hours before the supposed announcement (at 7:00pm Pacific Time... damned 7's), there's a letter stating the announcement was cancelled by Microsoft, ie- Bungie's publisher. Some people are calling *****. Who knows? I am FURIOUS! If there is no Bungie announcement tomorrow morning, I will curl into a ball and die. Or not, but I'll be sad as hell!
At any rate, assuming there is a future announcement, my guess as to what it is is as follows:
The Superintendent might be an indication of some sort of story-driven gameplay about a lowly robot (think Wall-E) in charge of monitoring and taking care of a Halo Ring or some other portion of the Halo mythos. There is mention here of "Custodial" bots:

The installations are designed to be run by advanced Artificial Intelligence constructs specially purposed by the Forerunners. The highest Intelligence on each Installation is a single Monitor. The Monitor's task is to ensure that the Installation's Constructors, Sentinels and Enforcers repair, maintain and defend the ring from damage, contain the Flood specimens, and ensure that their own Installation is ready to fire on demand, including running activation simulations.
In addition, each Installation contains less intelligent constructs, known as Sentinels. The Sentinels serve virtually any purpose necessary to ensure that the Halo functions properly; they are also capable of combating small Flood outbreaks. Should a major Flood outbreak occur, heavier automations, such as the Enforcers and Sentinel Majors will be created to assist the Sentinels. In the meantime, Constructors are also created to ensure that the Forerunner structures on the Installation are kept in optimal shape, and that they are not damaged by conflict or weather.
Save for the Monitor, all automations can be constructed at specialized Sentinel Production Facilities that float high in the Halo's atmosphere. These Facilities have never been seen (except briefly in the sky above the level Sacred Icon, one can be seen crashing as you exit near the end of the level, you then fight through the remains of it in Quarantine Zone), but they seem to contain limitless materials for constructing any number of automations.
343 Guilty Spark was a noted Monitor-Custodian of Installation 04. Perhaps The Superintendent fits in with this somehow?
Of course, this could be part of a new round of Bungie ARGing. This site for 101.9 Fox FM has a Bungie-esque countdown going on. Also, the i love bees website seems to have resurfaced. This was the ARG that kicked off the viral marketing campaign for Halo 2.
At any rate, it's late, I'm retarded and need to kill this post. Please comment and keep me sane!

EDIT: A few other things... Notice the countdown timer on the 1019foxfm site is different? Perhaps it is a short ARG? Perhaps it begins tomorrow with a kickoff... then the real announcement is at the end of that timer - which would be 08/07/08 (seven's again) at 7:00pm Pacific I believe (can anyone confirm this?).
Lastly, look at the text from that site:
-CODE-
the SPDR-x.xx.x message (SYS7EM PERIL DIS7RIBU7ED REFLEX... again with the 7's)... isn't that one of the line errors on the terminals in Halo 3? The ones you need to view for the achievement?
UPDATE: this thread on the Bungie forums has an interesting subject line for page 5 (the link). That is NOT the subject of the thread. Look at other pages to verify. It is definitely a viral thing, as far as I care to believe at this point. Very interesting...- xepherys, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2http://www.tfproject.org/tfp/showthread.php?t=1377 ...
The link I was referring to that people were down-digging me for. That thread has all of my original quotes and links.

- handheldchimp, on 07/16/2008, -1/+4If this was real, then the site would have gone back to its normal state, and they would have posted this as a Weekly Update type story.
- sovietninja, on 07/16/2008, -7/+1The Superintendent came across the Husked Casket, thinking it was a part of the destroyed ring that made it through the slipspace portal. Believing that it could contain Flood lifeforms, its programs began to assess the properties of the Husked Casket. However, before the Superintendent could complete its initial scans, a rogue signal burst through its connection relays. In a flight of panic, the Superintendent believed it scanners had picked up a lifeform similiar to its creator, and immediately fearing being overtaken by the rogue prescence hacking into its subroutines, it activated its emergency transmitter, sending one final message, "When a couple of SIs said "we’re up in no good", Started making trouble in my neighbourhood, I got in one little fight and my mom got scared, And said "you’re moving with your aunte and uncle in bel-air".
- Westrunner, on 07/16/2008, -7/+1It sure seems real to me. This makes me want to not buy Microsoft products, specifically any that were advertised at E3. Bungie has always been good to me. Microsoft charges 200 dollars for a 120 gig hard-drive and an online service loaded with ads. I'm about ready to piss on my fanboy hat.
Resistance 2 is looking pretty sweet.- sovietninja, on 07/16/2008, -1/+4Have some food....
- koutetsu, on 07/16/2008, -2/+1Uh... you are aware that MS has nothing to do with the publishing for Bungie anymore, right?
- chaos7, on 07/16/2008, -2/+2maybe this is new viral marketing.
- RyeBrye, on 07/16/2008, -5/+3"Reveal" is a verb. "Revelation" is a noun.
- xepherys, on 07/16/2008, -7/+5Can anyone tell me why I have so many -diggs? What am I doing that's pissing people off so much? :(
- zelzin, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6You keep posting comments.
- rowlodge, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1an announcement coming from the halo 3 bungie.net site, ....what could it be?
- BedPost, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3Decent 1up article on the story: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3168765. It seems pretty real.
- iPatella, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1I think they pulled it.
- hamibal, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Yeah, it's gone.
- M724, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Another reason to believe this is a short-run marketing stunt. Everybody calm down! We'll figure it all out in a little over 4 hours!
- DheiF, on 07/16/2008, -0/+3Hey guys,
Have you tried removing the dot at the end of the hyperlink?
http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3168765 - BedPost, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Wow. It added the period for some reason. Nice catch, DheiF.
- TwwIX, on 07/16/2008, -9/+4Another subpar overhyped first person shooter!?
- Balanced, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1Bungie used to make really good games. perhaps one day they will again.
- Xplodzion, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1Nice band wagon you have there.
- itsthebrod, on 07/16/2008, -1/+1Fortunately, no one cares about your opinion.
- xepherys, on 07/16/2008, -4/+2Doubt it's real. Easy enough to get blogmedia in on it. Or to fool more people than you'd imagine. Either way, I almost assure you that something is going on... and it's not a cancelled announcement.
- hamibal, on 07/16/2008, -1/+0Good Going marketing team... lets get the fans all excited about this "announcement". Personally, I think they may have genetically made a real master chief and are going to release him to run for president?
- smitlet, on 07/16/2008, -1/+2Obviously the reveal is still going ahead. This is typical BUNGIE
- Resiroth, on 07/16/2008, -0/+6"UPDATE:
First off, open both of the following pages in 2 different tabs:
http://www.bungie.net/images/games/Reboot_homePage ...
http://www.bungie.net/images/games/Reboot_homePage ...
Now, in the first picture, look to the left side where the 3 squares are (the first saying "ALERT STATUS", the second a picture of the SI, and the third one has a "bar code"). You see the 3 squares I'm talking about? Good, read on.
In that same picture (link #1), to the left of the 3rd square, there is some text, but so small it's hard to tell what it says with the naked eye. Some have said that it says "DEATH ANGEL" (in l33t speak, of course).
Now look at the second picture in the same spot. Clearly it's different. Can anyone with the necessary tools figure out what it says?"
From animus on bungie.net forums. I guess I had the necessary tools ( control scroll lol ) and I think it says death angel.- Spem, on 07/16/2008, -0/+2On the second image, you not only have to rotate the text, but also flip that text horizontally (after rotation). I don't know what it might be considered saying, but the text is "J4 B4 N4 T H4 "
The number 4 in both "B4" and "H4" may be something else. It is difficult to tell because character spacing doesn't look to have been maintained.
In the first image, I can see where people see "D34TH ANG3L". However, again, character spacing is not maintained near the A in "Angel". There is a space after the letter... plus, the G looks more like a 3 when messing with saturation levels and color balance. but if it were to spell something, I think it would most likely spell "Death Angel" rather than "Death A Neel".- 2ndDairy, on 07/16/2008, -0/+1It's likely Death Angle. The same text shows up larger on the Halo 360 and the Halo 3 Cold Storage promo.
