Bullet Points: 5 Turn-of-the-Century Games
doubleviking.com — A few games from the 1998-2000 era are still going strong. But these games aren't capitalizing on nostalgia: the people who play them never stopped playing them in the first place. Here's a list of five games that have survived the loss of most developer/publisher support, the loss of 95% of their original fan bases, and the attacks of 9/11/01

- unicronband, on 06/09/2008, -0/+4I love replaying the games of the golden age of my childhood (basically every Squaresoft RPG b/w the 16 & 32-bit gens). Maybe it's the amount of time I invested in them as a kid or the nostalgia factor surrounding them, or maybe games today are just getting *****, but I know I can easily overlook a game's dated graphics if the gameplay/story still hold up.
Ironically the games that were most impressive at the time seem to have aged the worst. I know I'll get dugg down for admitting this, but after playing a few rounds of Goldeneye with some friends a few months ago, we had to turn it off because it just didn't hold up to the games that have come out since. At the time it was remarkable because it was undoubtedly the best console FPS, but since then the FPS formula has been polished to such a flawless sheen that the once proud Goldeneye has been reduced to a fondly remembered relic of the jagged polygonal past.
I won't pretend I'm not impressed with the graphics in today's games. Sometimes I find myself standing in the middle of Liberty City with my jaw on the floor, just staring at the reflections on the water or the sunlight being scattered by the wires on a bridge pulsating against the cars passing by. But that appeal only lasts so long. The true test of a games greatness is being able to play it 5, 10, 15 years later and still get a buttload of enjoyment out of it. I fear that many of today's games won't have that kind of staying power. - WilliamDS, on 06/09/2008, -0/+3interesting read. there were actually quite a few games that I loved from the late 1990s
- Cowgodx, on 06/10/2008, -0/+4I played every game on that list until at least 2003.
- iamronburgundy, on 06/10/2008, -0/+2*****, I'm still playing Starcraft.
