Was wondering how many posts till a loudmouthed pimply faced teenager showed up and made a rude comment. Answer: 6 - EvolvedAnt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"Why so long?
Game in a day is much better." -Willywonka
Actualy the guy who runs the game in a day site was the person who challenged him to make a good game in a week, using ONLY FREE software. Game in a day uses software that costs hundreds of dollars, so infact this is better because someone who just purchased their first PC and has nothing but internet access can make a game in a week even if he does not know much about programming at all. - hugo, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1joe mama,
why don't you make a better game in a week and post it here - OrangeTide, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1This is bogus:
Rule #3: No Engines, only basic libraries / APIs
but they use PyGame. I would consider PyGame an engine for doing sprite games, it does most of the heavy lifting.
The 16K MUD competition was far more interesting: http://www.andreasen.org/16k-original.shtml - ThePikey, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1"It's not great. It's not polished. It's not balanced. There are only six rooms. The art is crappy and it is buggy. But it's fun for a few minutes, and it was whipped together in a week to prove IT CAN BE DONE."
The author says it all right on his page. I'd like to see the trolls do as well in 40 hours. - evilunleashed, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The link isn't working for me right now, my office's sub-par internet connection I'm sure, but just going from the title, I'm guessing this is about Madden 06? ;)
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0It does suck ass...
Why do it if you're not going to do it right? - ziffel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"@software2: He did do it right... His goal was to write a game under a week, and he did. It was supposed to be a learning experience; he wasn't trying to make a t0t411y 1337 game."
Unfortunately, that concept is beyond the grasp of some of the mental midgets that post here. - geminitojanus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Saw this when it happened about a month or two ago. Incredible he wrote the game, but cheated a lot to make it happen. The game would never be fun with how fast it was written, and was mostly just a "doing it because I can" thing. At least it gets the author's point about python across.

http://www.gameinaday.com/ - dtrinh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0read: how to make a game that no one will play and that severly sucks.
quite frankly, Im rather confident that there are a few games in the bargain bin at EBgames that look just like this. If you're going to make a game - you should at least make it worth all the time you put into it. - pcgeek101, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0nice read +digg. thanks for the link
- marvngardn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Looks like I've found a new weekend project to attempt. You digg it the most!
- rousehouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I have always wanted to do something like this challenge. Great digg...

It's $100 for the Torque engine. It's not hundredS ;) And if you were to limit yourself to free software there is always stuff like CrystalSpace. - mcspectrum, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I always wanted to make a game like this, and it's great that he did it in python. Neat article thanks.
- hawks5999, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0From just a quick scan it looks similar to the old Gateway to Apshai that I spent probably 100+ hours playing back in the day on my Coleco Adam.
uhh... why's everyone looking at me like I'm old? - capran, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man I've been wanting make games forever. Just never had the time, energy, patience, will, etc. to learn enough programming.
Now I *really* need to do this. :) - kylef, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nice stuff.
- craigtheguru, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Good work. While the end result is somewhat featureless, the real experience brought on by the true-to-real-life time constraint was obviously rewarding. I've coded many games in various languages and I know the pain and joy. I'm not yet in to python, but this has inspired me to take a look. I'd consider using OpenGL and C++ but I'm sure it'd have taken at least twice as long just fighting with the programming language!
- Hara, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This game is such crap! It's like he only spent a week!
Seriously though, this is a great article and shows what is required to make a basic game. Imagine what it'd be if he spent more time and had more people (like artists). The question now is, can a small group of people make a FUN/Enjoyable Quality game with similar budget but perhaps a bit more time? - JamesWilson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0MS Paint is not free. He broke a rule there. PyGame is questionable.
- Scorch6969, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i still think rpg maker 2000 is way more fun to use than python...
