Brutes are playable in Halo 3, video on Dec. 20th
xbox360fanboy.com — It's rumored that Brutes will be a playable class in Halo 3. Even better, a video confirming this should be released on Xbox Live Marketplace on Dec. 20th.

- tlongren, on 10/12/2007, -27/+7Awesome!! Can't wait for the Halo 3 demo.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -7/+49Are you freaking kidding me? If this is for the multiplayer then that's fine by me but I was hoping to, I don't know, play as the Master Chief for more than half of the game this time. In Halo 2 you didn't even end the game with the main character!
The side story was cool for Halo 2, but seriously, can we please play as the soldier that just kicks ass and takes names? - SimonX314, on 10/12/2007, -2/+31Its gotta 3 classes in multiplayer. Spartans, elites, and brutes, and they are going to balance the crap out of them during the beta. They better do master chief for the whole campaign.
- SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12They'd better balance them for multiplayer. Elites have enormous heads that make them easy sniper pickings from the front and either side. Only idiots use Elites anymore. Brutes would be giant targets too for body shots and their tiny heads would make them impossible to snipe. I don't think this is a good idea. They should just stick with Master Chiefs.
- Nobi-Wan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+16All I gotta say is that each character better not have some "special ability" for multiplayer. It will save them a lot of time and wasted programming if they make the characters equal in all regards. I'm really fearing that the "mystery X button" is now going to be running fast for Spartans, cloaking for Elites, and probably jumping really high for the stupid Brutes.
- roosterjm2k2, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4well, if they balance them accordingly...it could work out amazing.
No game has done this better than Tribes. The classes in tribes were perfect because no single class stood out as the best...they all had their role...if they do something similar in halo3 online, it could be sweet. The problem is, weapon appropritation has to be considered...to make a bigger, slower class better, it has to have bigger weapons and more defense...at the same time, the lighter classes have to be more vulnerable and have less weapons to chose from...which i think would be a bad idea for the halo 'feel'
I have a feeling, if it makes it in the game and its true, then it would be in single player...im torn about my feeling for MP use of a brute.
I for one, liked the idea of having an elite to play as...but not the alternating kind. I think it would have been cool to chose in the begining of campaign which you were, and throughout the campaings you led up to a final battle that is shared between the MC and the elite...but I didnt dis-like the halo2 setup as much as everyone else. - SkeletaLlama, on 10/12/2007, -8/+5Bungie is known for their ability to balance weapons and maps. I think if anyone can pull it off, they can. Though it might take them a few system updates and tweaks to perfect the balance.
- NickyBatts, on 10/12/2007, -10/+13Awww... I liked playing as the Arbiter. You're all just haters.
- dolemite5005, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8@SkeletaLlama
The weapons in Halo 2 are anything but balanced. Neither are the characters ( there's a reason no one plays as elites). - W00DR0W, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Who cares about playing as an over-hyped gorilla, the brutes are just a Planet of the Apes rip off anyway. Lamest characters in Halo.
What I'm interested in is playing a Jackal, or something more interesting than the Brutes. - KissTheRing, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@Nobi-Wan
The master chief is no soldier, he's a marine. Don't let a real marine ever hear you calling them a soldier, they'll give you an ear full at the least. - TrainwreckX, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1There is no real evidence that this is right. I garuntee there won't be any new halo content at all on Marketplace on the 20th.
- shinynew, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Update: Bungie's Frank O'Connor, under his NeoGAF alias, Stinkles, has debunked part of this rumor (twice). According to Frankie, Brutes will not be playable characters. The video may still come to pass, though. We'll just have to wait and see.
- Singels, on 10/12/2007, -10/+0More (potentially) great Halo 3news.
Give me... give me now.... i want... i want... i want ;) - mrfreeziexp, on 10/12/2007, -7/+3Wow, that would be..... interesting.
- dpl_, on 10/12/2007, -2/+24So, instead of having armored human hands holding weapons, there's going to be hairy gorilla hands.
- InsomniaSlim, on 10/12/2007, -0/+10It actually makes sense if you think about it... According to the end of the Halo 2 storyline, the Brutes essentially took over the Elites in a coup. So it wouldn't be surprising to me they play a larger role in Halo 3.
I'm just curious if you get their "rampage" when they are low on health. In Halo 2, when they were one hit from death, they bounded around like an ape on meth. If they hit you, you were splattered. It might be cool to have that... a class of character with low shield and high strength...?- LtCarter47, on 10/12/2007, -1/+18Have you seen many apes on meth?
- InsomniaSlim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11Actually, no... not meth... but I've heard about the effect of blueberries.
Gary: "We were all out at the zoo one day, I was doing some acting, walking on the railing of the gorilla exhibit. I fell in. Everyone screamed and Tommy jumped in after me, forgetting that he had blueberries in his front pocket. The gorillas just went wild. They jumped all over his body and threw him around like a rag doll to get to those blueberries. One gorilla would throw him to another gorilla who tossed him to another. Everyone panicked and cried out for somebody to help but it was too late. The gorillas beat him to death before the zookeepers could gas them all."
Lisa: "Gary, you didn't kill your brother. Those gorillas did."
- Wyndhurst, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0It looks like snipers are going to have a hay day again in Halo 3 with anyone that plays as the brute characters just like with the elites on H2.
- billisdog, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11As long as they don't make you use the brute shot. Weakest grenades EVAR
- praisethelard, on 06/06/2008, -2/+8Yes, but kickass melee.
- slurpeyatari, on 10/12/2007, -5/+0Alright! another excuse to go back into hibernation
- Chinsquad, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5The Chief should be playable for the majority of the game, but a brute should be playable for at most one level, if at all. Just to give us a full convenient point of view.
Plus, that rampage would be cool. - rumit, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4Playing the game as a Brute will ruin the game.
- thisisbs, on 10/12/2007, -8/+8Halo 2 was ruined by playing an elite...who taught them english anyway?
- night141, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7Why was it ruined? Playing as the enemy you were fighting against was a nice change in the gameplay and a complete WTF....SWEET! moment when the dropships landed on the heretic stronghold and here I am surrounded by elites and grunts...and I'm one of them!
And subtitles would have been lame. Better to just keep it in english.
But to each his own I guess. - knodi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Playing the Arbiter was awesome in Halo 2 it really fit in the story and told a side of the war that MC would have never seen the civil war that wages with in the covanent.
- DBiz, on 10/12/2007, -10/+2KNOW WHAT ELSE WAS AWESOME!?!!?
When the game all of a sudden ended! I can't believe they released Halo 1.5 and charged $50, but they did!!!1!1!1!
Let me lay it out: Halo is overrated beyond belief, and for the next year we're going to have all of Bungie's useless details crammed down our throat. "Oh, tell everyone that Master Chief is now rendered. Also, tell everyone that Mario may make a cameo."
Bungie: Masters of the hype. - Konrad9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Bungie doesn't hype it, the idiot fanboys hype it.
- whickywhickyjim, on 10/12/2007, -13/+4Yay! Instead of writing a good plot, bungie is just going to recycle some more stupid material and release another laughable sequel. Wow, I can play as an ape or maybe the plant or maybe the shield alien. If you had really developed over the 2 years you worked on Halo2, you'd probably already have those things ready. Halo2 multiplayer is fine, but it isn't really anything that wasn't there in the original halo. Bungie is doing really marginal work and making big bucks off of it. If the plot was interesting this might be more excusable, but the plot is just *****. Lame. Next.
- night141, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Actually if you have read the books along with playing the game you'll know that the plot is actually a decent mystery/action story. Hell, I hate reading and even the books had me itching to read just one more page.
But continue to be blinded by your rage against mainstream. - knodi, on 10/12/2007, -1/+5Halo has a really really good sci-fi plot play the games read the books. The story is of salvation.
- night141, on 10/12/2007, -2/+10Actually if you have read the books along with playing the game you'll know that the plot is actually a decent mystery/action story. Hell, I hate reading and even the books had me itching to read just one more page.
- gardnmi, on 10/12/2007, -9/+2In the Halo universe imposable thumbs rule all.
- slickrick2k1, on 10/12/2007, -2/+9I think the kids from the commercial should be playable characters.
- knodi, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2Holy *****. awesome
- DBiz, on 10/12/2007, -5/+4And in other useless Bungie news not worth reporting, one of the developers just took a *****.
- whickywhickyjim, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5@night
That is because you are an idiot. Maybe if halo could stop stealing other people's stories and spent time on an _original_ plot you might have a point. Maybe. The first halo might be one of the greatest games I've ever played, with a good plot and immersive gameplay, although it borrowed heavily from the aliens movies, the starship troopers novel, planet of the apes and many others. However, the second game's plot and game engine development was garbage and showed an utter lack of any originality, poor plot writing ability, and poor developement - haven't you noticed how poorly the cut scenes and levels were rendered or do you think that they're awesome mainstream too?. I simply expected much more from bungie, especially after how solid the original halo was. What I got was an unpolished turd. I can see I'm wasting my time with you, so I'll just stop here. - Sammy20, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Holy ***** the Halo universe is so boring.
- enforcerpsu, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7All I have to say is that I want to play as the master chief through the entire Halo 3 game. Don't make me play as some side story BS alien. The chief eats these guys for breakfast, don't make me play as one. That was one of the worst parts about halo 2.
Also...make a multiplayer option to play as master chief models only...because once they release it someone will find an exploit with one of the models.- thisisbs, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1THANK YOU!!! thats what i am trying to say!!! why would i want to play as something i have been killing through 1 whole game and half of another? just keep me on the same side the whole way through. also you never hear anyone going halo 2 was better than 1 do you? no because you played master chief the whole way through.
- ScubaSteve2188, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0for the love of god, dont make us play as brutes in single player. or elites. thats all i ask for. id rather not have them in multiplayer either, but as long as they keep it to skin changes only, i guess it would be ok. i just hope bungie doesnt go overboard with the options. keep it simple, keep it fun. a few new weapons/vehicles are cool, but we dont need 200 types of grenades, 4 types of sniper rifles, and 18 kind of warthogs. halo doesnt need crazy options and gadgets to be fun. if you want low gravity, play 007.
- JackHallows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Wait, so they ARE playable, or they're RUMORED to be playable? Misleading title....
Anyway, I wouldn't want to play as a brute, or a hunter, or anything else because they would just be huge targets... Elites already are... - whickywhickyjim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3@KissTheRing
I was a marine. And while I applaud your notion of correct referencing, the master chief is not a marine. A master chief is a navy rank, so he's technically a filthy sailor.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_Chief_Petty_Officer
And while I'm at it - Johnson should be a Gunnery Sargent, as per the insignia on his uniform. It is not acceptable in the marines, although it is acceptable in the army, to shorten the title of senior NCO's to sargent or "sarge." If anything, Johnson would be called Gunny. Why bungie can't figure this out is beyond me - maybe they're too busy worrying about what music to put into the next Halo2 soundtrack cd release.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gunnery_Sergeant- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Very nice. My friend Osvaldo is in ROTC at my high-school (we're sophomores) and we were talking about Halo... the reference to him being Master Chief came up, and we argued with some other friends there who swore up and down he was a marine... which, although stated in the games as being true, is wrong.
But, there is a continuity problem between the Halo universe and current military ranks. The UNSC is the series's human Navy force. However, all of the "marines," are designated as UNSC Marines.
It's a little weird, but maybe, in Halo's universe, we can simply accept that all army forces have merged... seeing as the only ones necessary are Navy (because Air Force sort of loses it's significance when the Navy's the one in space and air) and Marines (ground troops.) - MackPrime, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2maybe because it's in the future. PERHAPS ranks changed in like 200+ years? PERHAPS?
- JackHallows, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2whickywhickyjim, these games are not set in modern times. There have already been countless endless arguments about it; Bungie even said themselves that things might have changed just a little 550 years in the future...
- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1@ MackPrime
546 years, to be exact :)
- Blandyman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4Very nice. My friend Osvaldo is in ROTC at my high-school (we're sophomores) and we were talking about Halo... the reference to him being Master Chief came up, and we argued with some other friends there who swore up and down he was a marine... which, although stated in the games as being true, is wrong.
- whickywhickyjim, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Maybe things have changed. Or maybe it just shows that they have poor attention to detail when it comes to the execution of simple things like rank and maybe they convienently came up with a stupid excuse instead of admiting that they made an error.
Anyway, he can't be a marine because at the beginning of halo2 you get intoduced to your new gear by a master gunnery sargent ( who johnson calls "master guns," which is a correct an acceptable term for that rank) who later gets killed in the armory. That rank is an E9, and is equivalent in grade to a Master Chief. If the chief were a marine, he would probably hold this rank instead of master chief. You might argue that he could be a sargent major, which is another E9 marine rank, but sargents major are specifically commanders of enlisted troop units and directly handle the troopies - which isn't the chief's bag, baby. - goonbaggins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The Brute part is false. It was smacked down by Bungie's community manager.
http://halo.bungie.org/news.html?item=17427 - monchster, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Well, so much for that rumor. It did stir quite a bit of attention though, huh!?!?!? Lol...
- HighCouncillor, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0@whickywhickyjim
I agree that bungie did get things a bit wrong, but to suit the game. I think we need to look at the bigger picture. The Halo series as a whole is rated very highly. Perhaps people who disagree just need to GET OVER IT. It is interesting that the people that say they hate they games seem to know a lot about it. Hence
"at the beginning of halo2 you get intoduced to your new gear by a master gunnery sargent ( who johnson calls "master guns," which is a correct an acceptable term for that rank) who later gets killed in the armory."
Kinda' hypocritical really...
Anyhow, today Bungie has confirmed that a video will be available on XBL marketplace from 20/12/06. Sorry, 12/20/06 (I'm not American...)
