- subtheorist, on 10/16/2009, -0/+39Schafer is an evil genius. I'm pretty sure him and his whole team were eating massive quantities of shrooms while developing Psychonauts.
- internetisscary, on 10/16/2009, -0/+32Hey look, Jack Black is acting all crazy again!
- Ziriux, on 10/16/2009, -3/+32Everything about this game was done smart, from marketing by EA as always, to writing by Tim as well as the crazy art style is beautiful.
- highpitch83, on 10/16/2009, -1/+22How is it "smart marketing" to saturate any and all forms of media with your product and a star that is recognizable by 100% of your target demographic? This article should be titled: "Marketing on an infinite budget: EA style." This is the same approach that the Gears of War, Halo, Call of Duty (including the Modern Warfare titles) have done for years... it's not "smart" or "innovative" its common sense.
- AManWithNoName, on 10/16/2009, -1/+18I am the milkman, my milk is delicious.
- SpeedyThing, on 10/16/2009, -1/+16Anyone who thinks that the gameplay made Psychonauts flop is wrong...it was the people didn't get it. And I don't mean that nastily, it's just it was a hard game to summarise and people like to know what they're buying.
Just like a Terry Gilingham film, games like this require the public to put aside their entrenched perceptions and take a leap of faith. Brutal Legend neatly circumvents this by adding an incredibly topical Guitar Hero fuelled metal layer. Psychonauts was about a strange kid with psychic powers at a holiday camp.
Those of us who played it loved it. But it was always going to be an impossibly hard sale. - RegalBegal, on 10/16/2009, -1/+14I call it Smarketing.
- FredFredrickson, on 10/16/2009, -1/+14...Tim Schafer? That should stick out more than Jack Black.
- irfanmp, on 10/16/2009, -2/+14I dunno, it does have an 84 aggregate score on Metacritic and a 9.0 on IGN.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Br%C3%BCtal_Legend#Re ... - ManUnitdFan, on 10/16/2009, -0/+9It's a damn shame more people didn't play Psychonauts. That was one of the more original games of the last ten years, and it was awesome.
- Encephalon, on 10/16/2009, -0/+9Jack Black is an awful actor, yes. But his part in this game is basically everything that Tenacious D has been doing for years. He's been practicing for this one game his entire life and is somehow perfect for THIS role. Not wanting to purchase (perhaps even rent) this game simply because his name is attached to it seems like a petty excuse to rebel but, hey, to each his own.
- Ziriux, on 10/16/2009, -0/+8It's already out genius!
- inactive, on 10/16/2009, -0/+7I thought I saw the main character on Metalacholypse last night
- Schmapdi, on 10/16/2009, -0/+6Psychonauts was indeed fantastic - but don't forget his real Magnum Opus - Grim Fandango. Oh what I wouldn't give for a modernized version of that.
- allenthar, on 10/16/2009, -0/+6Gilingham? REALLY?
I think you're thinking of Terry Gilliam :P - pablosaurus, on 10/17/2009, -2/+8Wow. Did you even read your own rant? Yeah, you aren't a fanboy at all. You and your PC are great, we get it. Some games are better on PC (I wouldn't buy an FPS on a console personally) but I'm guessing you haven't played Brutal Legend or you'd notice that the main combat sections wouldn't really work as well with a mouse and keyboard. Not that they wouldn't be playable, just odd. Not everything plays better on PC (as much as we'd like it to). For example, Splinter Cell looks much better on PC but is almost unplayable with a keyboard and mouse.
I don't think the people digging you down are the pathetic ones. - smurfz, on 10/16/2009, -1/+6Badass game!
- nanowerx, on 10/16/2009, -0/+5This isnt a movie, this game has a supurbly written script (unlike many of his recent movies). Jack Black is not crazy and over-the-top here. He fits the role of the character perfectly. Dont shortchange yourself.
- dncarlson, on 10/16/2009, -0/+5Best level in almost any game ever.
- rwiggum, on 10/16/2009, -0/+5Tim Schaffer's comedy, not Jack Black's.
- chunkybeefstu, on 10/16/2009, -1/+6The nigh-unexplored realm of heavy metal album art coming to life doesn't stick out at all to you?
- Minivolt, on 10/16/2009, -0/+5As humor is subjective, it would be hard to convince you that he is funny. But he does have a good singing voice. So he is "good" at something, unlike what you're implying.
- Reibooi, on 10/16/2009, -5/+10I don't know about all this talk about smart marketing and what not but I can tell you that Brutal Legend is a incredible game. It's fun and incredibly funny and has great characters and a insanely creative world. What more could you ask for?
- WanderingGuru, on 10/17/2009, -0/+4I know I can use a PC monitor with a 360, but as I said, I like the idea of getting a PS3 more because of the extra bonus of using it as a BluRay player. Times are tough so I have to be more selective about spending my money on non-essentials like gaming.
- lucasftw, on 10/16/2009, -1/+5Is the author of this article a native English speaker?
I take it back, he sounds like a native English speaker....who happens to be in 9th grade. - darkeagle5601, on 10/16/2009, -3/+7Wow, not picking up a game because of the main characters voice, especially when it's done well it fits right with the character? That's a stretch, but way to be a rebel I guess.
- Dimbleby, on 10/16/2009, -0/+4Doesn't run in 1080p.
- nanowerx, on 10/16/2009, -0/+3Most reviewers will blow through the main story line so they can beat the game and write up a review quick. I beat it with 70% of the game completed in like 13 hours. While that still is pretty short by todays standards, I got more joy out of those 13 hours than I have with quite a few games that have triple that amount of playtime.
Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare only had like a 10 hour single player campaign and we all know how ***** awesome that game is.
Don't return the game, you would be doing a disservice to yourself. - sageerrant, on 10/16/2009, -0/+3Most games don't.
- insanekoz, on 10/16/2009, -1/+4Best level in the game, bar none.
- Tyrghast, on 10/16/2009, -0/+3His games are always fun and entertaining, yet never seem to get very popular.
- TriNiiTy, on 10/16/2009, -0/+3You left out gameplay which is the heart of any great game whether it has a great story/world or not. See Fallout 3, Bioshock, inFAMOUS, etc. So unless you like the gameplay in Brutal Legend it's likely that the characters and the story will be a moot point.
- ummcordell, on 10/16/2009, -1/+4Best game I've played since Bioshock.
Art direction, voice acting, story, gameplay... all top notch. It reeks of creativity. - Dimbleby, on 10/16/2009, -0/+3Granted. But BL has been widely touted as 1080p capable.
http://forum.ea.com/eaforum/posts/list/321599.page - w00t692, on 10/16/2009, -0/+3Eh, the shader effects blow anything the PS2 could do out of the water.
Polygonal wise as well. I'm not seeing your point, besides being a sarcastic dick. - sageerrant, on 10/16/2009, -0/+2Then you have earned a digg for making note of misrepresentation.
- Spelda, on 10/16/2009, -1/+3It took me twelve hours. It's only that short if you're playing on easiest difficulty and plow right through the main story without doing sidequests.
- eleminop, on 10/16/2009, -0/+2Its a fun game, but the demo is misleading, the game is more like Overlord than DMC.
- Ziriux, on 10/16/2009, -0/+2Yes his wild imagination have made him unique in what he does.
- StevieJanowski, on 10/16/2009, -2/+4I saw jack black on the VMAs and he was pushing it hard
- MaxMWood, on 10/17/2009, -0/+2I didn't really have any interest in trying the demo for Brutal Legend but I decided to download it and give it a shot anyway, not knowing what to expect. What can I say? It's awesome, such a great demo!
- happytheclam, on 10/16/2009, -1/+3This is retarded. They game hardly had anything special with it's marketing. Some o.k. video's of gameplay and some trailers and a commercial that made no sense. No cool trailers like Infamous or God of War III, or Call of Duty 6. Nothing. It's just a hot topic and a good genre. And the game developers usually have nothing to do with the marketing.
You put a guy like Jack Black in your game with Every Metal Icon of the 70's and 80's and the game doesn't really even need marketing, because of the hype it will generate.
I don't get how this guy calls the marketing Genius. What an idiot he knows nothing.
The Game however is Awesome. - m0og0o, on 10/16/2009, -2/+4As a video game maker, I'd ask you to support this game and its studio since they're one of the few developers left who care most about quality.
- nanowerx, on 10/16/2009, -0/+1You did
- jacksons98, on 10/16/2009, -0/+1Thank you!
- TheKitchenSinkX, on 10/17/2009, -0/+1Psychonauts sold poorly because it was a cartoonish platforming game that had little to no marketing, and for no other reason.
If it were another gritty realistic FPS with good marketing, it would have sold well, or at least a lot better than it did. It's that simple. - Jorlock, on 10/18/2009, -0/+1After seeing Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny I'm convinced Jack Black is a good actor.
He was also pretty decent in 2005's King Kong. - pablosaurus, on 10/17/2009, -1/+2That and almost all of the characters were kids. It seems when kids hit a certain age they don't want to be a part of anything that they view as even a little childish. It seems like it takes about a decade to get over that.
- mattcoady, on 10/17/2009, -0/+1Wait no more!
- mattcoady, on 10/17/2009, -0/+1He's already gotten his fat paycheck for the voice work and he'll continue to do his thing long after this game. To not buy this would take away money from the pockets of double fine studios who's entire future rides game to game.
