- joehobbes, on 12/05/2007, -5/+347I know I've said this many times before, but the Dreamcast is the most underrated console of all time. There were so many great games on the little white box that showed off every little bit of Sega's creativity. It was also very much ahead of its time with built-in online capabilities and such.
Anyway, I still recommend the Dreamcast just about any game that is willing to give it a try.
Here's some of the best reasons to look into it right now:

It had internet capability out of the box (it could have rivaled PS2) and created something years before Xbox Live. It was also the first out the door so the system holds a lot of the arcade fighting games that have never been ported over to other consoles. The graphics card wasn't bad for its time either. Damn you, SEGA :(
- estvir, on 12/05/2007, -2/+132When I think Dreamcast the first thing I think of is "Crazy Taxi" - oh how I loved that game and I don't know why. Also, Re-Volt was on the DC? I never knew that, it was heaps of fun on PC.
If I see a cheap DC about I'm going to pick one up. - inactive, on 12/05/2007, -2/+101Dreamcast was the so ahead of its time people just didn't seem to get it... How i miss thee...
- benitojuarez, on 12/05/2007, -15/+106Personally even after all these years, I think the graphics on the dreamcast blow the ps2 away.
- omgroffles, on 12/05/2007, -3/+88Honestly for me, the PS2 was a step back as the Dreamcast took such a huge (but widely unrecognized or appreciated) step forward for consoles.
- christof53, on 12/05/2007, -0/+83If they make a Dreamcast 2, they have to make a Shenmue 3.
- orca94, on 12/05/2007, -1/+73***** yeah.
The Dreamcast is the most highly underrated console of all time. Anyway I think I'll go back to playing some Power Stone. - mu0p, on 12/05/2007, -1/+64OH DON'T REMIND ME OF THE DREAMCAST 2D FIGHTERS. My friends and i sunk probably years of our lives into Capcom vs. SNK 2 and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. The dreamcast ports of those games were near perfect because of the arcade boards that were used in the original games having a kinship with the DC hardware. Some of the best arcade ports ever. They just don't make 'em like that anymore.
Too bad sega is run by bumbling idiots and the console market is way crowded. I'd love to see DC again, i loved that system. - axisnate02, on 12/05/2007, -2/+63Three Words.
PHANTASY STAR ONLINE. - inactive, on 12/05/2007, -8/+65Blow away? No. Compare? Very much so.
- Juntistik, on 12/05/2007, -3/+58Sega Dreamcast... Automatic digg.
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -1/+53I bought one on ebay last year and I've had tons of fun with it! So many great games, including the best version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2!
- Loonacy, on 12/05/2007, -0/+52Yeah, I downloaded my Dreamcast the day it came out.
- Lionhart, on 12/05/2007, -5/+54At least you don't have three PS3s.
- diggdowner, on 12/05/2007, -1/+47I have three Dreamcasts myself!
(...though they all need some sort of repair...) - AdonalFoyle, on 12/05/2007, -2/+47Hell yeah the DC was underrated, it was by far the easiest console to pirate!
- AshamedAmerican, on 12/05/2007, -0/+40I still miss having the RESIDENT EVIL health meter right on my controller instead of having to pause the game to look at it!
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+36Power Stone 2 was one of my favorite games of all time
- tfletch, on 12/05/2007, -0/+34Oh I was a major fan of the Dreamcast. You remember Chu Chu Rocket?
- dremelofdeath, on 12/05/2007, -0/+31I still have my console I got (early) for Christmas that year, back in '99. I can remember happily bragging about how awesome I was that I had one of the first Dreamcasts. I had Sonic Adventure and Rippin' Riders (for those of you that remember the launch titles) and I subscribed to the official Dreamcast Magazine. I was cool.
If that isn't nostalgia, I don't know what is. Sega, bring back the Dreamcast.
(Oh yeah, and make it backwards compatible... who knows, maybe even downloadable retro Dreamcast games!) - baldgye, on 12/05/2007, -0/+30i'd love there to be a dreamcast 2, and i loved the little tamagotchi memory card thing... i never owned one, but it had some cool games and was out well before the ps2
- tizona, on 12/05/2007, -1/+28and while you're at it... bring us Shenmue 3 >_>
- Ghoztt, on 12/05/2007, -0/+26Heh, recently I sold every single one of my gaming systems I've kept throughout the years. NES... Genesis... N64... PS2... Gamecube... you name it. I had it.
....but I kept my Sega Dreamcast. Incredible selection of some TIMELESS games (Powerstone, Jet Set Radio, Bangai-O, Rez, Skies of Arcadia to name a few), and the BEST CONTROLLER EVAR!!! DUGG. - Elranzer, on 12/05/2007, -12/+35Underrated sure, but a small nostalgic fanbase is not enough for a "Dreamcast 2" (with nothing unchanged from the first DC, according to the article) to be an economically viable platform. I think what the author really wants is just just buy a Dreamcast.
Four consoles is too many, and Xbox was supposedly the spiritual successor to the Dreamcast anyway (when Peter Moore was head of Xbox division, at least). - kertong, on 12/05/2007, -0/+22Crazy taxi is good, but samba de amigo + alcohol is possibly the most fun you can have with your clothes on. :)
- EdgarVerona, on 12/05/2007, -0/+22Yeah. I remember that, you could upload critters from the Sonic Adventure game and play with them on the memory card. It was disturbingly more addictive than the Sonic game itself. =)
- EdgarVerona, on 12/05/2007, -1/+22Ah, Shenmue. Never before or since has a game so accurately modeled social awkwardness in conversations.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the game. But watching the long pauses, frequent "Umm"s, and strained expressions on characters when they talked to each other definitely made me uncomfortable. It was like watching a verbal train wreck. When I was a kid I played through Shenmue 1, and I was pretty much convinced by the end that most people in Japan must have Aspberger's Syndrome if everyone on the street talks to each other like that. - vocalyouth, on 12/05/2007, -0/+20I bought a used Dreamcast for like $25 a few years ago and an assortment of games from various used bins. I have easily played it more than I ever played my PS2. Also turned out to have a lot of my favorite games. It got me back into gaming at a time that I wasn't very interested in it anymore. I really wish Sega would get back into the console market, though I have always seen the Xbox to be the sort of spiritual successor to the Dreamcast (similar controller, good online setup, original Xbox had Shenmue 2 here in the US and for a while came packed with Sega GT and Jet Set Radio Future). All the Sega support is what actually sold me on original Xbox. I haven't bought a Sega branded game in a few years though, now, I don't think, since they branched the sports off to 2K. Either way, Dreamcast was a great system and if you find one laying around somewhere for cheap it's absolutely worth your time to pick one up and a stack of games. (must play: Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Jet Grind Radio, Soul Caliber)
- inactive, on 12/05/2007, -0/+19I remember seeing both side by side at Fry's electronics. I personally owned a DC before a PS2 because side by side the DC had better graphics imo.
- MillionsLivio, on 12/05/2007, -0/+18I still play mine, Sword of Berserk is great.
- Hazardc, on 12/05/2007, -2/+19and the genesis had sega channel, which to this day is still the most ahead of its time thing ever put on a console IMO. it was like having the xbox live marketplace, but having it well over a decade ago
- Flamancot, on 12/05/2007, -1/+18word, crazy taxi.
- mrASSMAN, on 12/05/2007, -0/+16I was in need of cash a few months ago so I decided to sell my dreamcast system.. and it was bought immediately on Craigslist. I now regret that decision immensely. :(
- magiclava, on 12/05/2007, -4/+20Dreamcast games on wii's vc would be pretty amazing.
- xtianbretz, on 12/05/2007, -0/+16Doesn't anyone remember Sword of the Berzerk? That was my personal favorite of the bunch. Plus the villain characters name was "Ballzack".
- Hortinstein, on 12/05/2007, -0/+15I also have to mention that the dreamcast was my first online enabled device at home. We didn't have a computer at the time, and my parents refused to get internet, so i would hack bluelight k-mart temp trial codes so I could use them over direct dialing to play pso. I would also chat on AIM over IRC
I think it was like "/msg hortinstein send screenname message" to even send an im...maybe thats why i am such a good typer - PixelD, on 12/05/2007, -1/+16Yeah until after the first week and the $5 batteries died. Then everytime you turned it on all you heard was that awful high pitched while.
- zhulien, on 12/05/2007, -1/+16it's funny when people talk about consoles like this in past tense. I still play my DC all the time, and still buy games for it. last new game I bought was released *THIS* year!
- DarkDx, on 12/05/2007, -1/+15That was true until the developers finally got into all ps2's hardware, but if you consider the DC was older, it was a aconplishment, go sega!
- EdgarVerona, on 12/05/2007, -4/+18Aye. I blew the first 400 bucks I made at my first job in High School on the Dreamcast and all 4 controllers etc...
When it went under a few months later, I realized I had learned a valuable lesson. Don't be an early adopter. - spinaltap87, on 12/05/2007, -0/+13I remember playing tons of Phantasy Star Online on the DC. That being said I cant believe how almost 10 years later online play for the Wii is so weak.
- EdgarVerona, on 12/05/2007, -0/+13Maybe I should get... ANOTHER...
/creepy Ryo reference - dikaiosyne, on 12/05/2007, -4/+17I bought a Dreamcast on opening night. I still have my fishing rod and broadband adapter along with an assortment of games. Too many zombies were humping in the PS2 orgy to realize the diamond in the rough that the Dreamcast was. The 360 is essentially an improved Dreamcast with a Bill Gates stamp of approval.
- solid12345, on 12/05/2007, -1/+14Dreamcast's graphics were always brighter and more colorful due to its extra video ram. Even the best visual Playstation 2 games still have muddy textures.
- Jeffler, on 12/05/2007, -2/+14Pondshop? Maybe thtas why you thought it had better graphics than an Xbox, because it was all underwater?
- mywhitenoise, on 12/05/2007, -0/+12I own a PS3, and don't own a 360. I honestly don't see a difference in graphics, don't make us sound like idiots.
- tengeta, on 12/05/2007, -1/+13I sold my Dreamcast in 8th grade... then severely regretted it, but in my Junior year of high school I got an offer to buy one off a friend going to college (he needed both space and money, score for me) and I got the system with 6 controllers, 12 vmu's, and some controller extension cords for just 25 bucks. He already sold the games so I had to get those on Ebay, but still it was and to this day is awesome. I'm gonna keep this stuff till its too broken to use... I've petitioned Sega personally to bring the Dreamcast back... but now it would need enough changes to make a Dreamcast II. They still should though, if they actually did things right and realized how the few fans they got are almost 100% insane about the system, they could get more to do the same.
As for now, I think I'm going to go play some Power Stone 2. (Get that one while you can Dreamcast owners... its hard to find and getting more expensive) - TangentThought, on 12/05/2007, -1/+13After finals are out, I'm going to be digging out my Dreamcast. It had the games that I've ever wanted in a console, which were arcade ports and shoot'em ups. Don't see many of those on the shelves of stores.
