Bring back the Sega Dreamcast
blogs.cnet.com — Success in this business isn't always measured in sales and revenue, sometimes it's measured in what it does for the average person. And while Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo left Sega in their wake, the Dreamcast provided an experience that acted as the forerunner to many of the consoles we enjoy today. Sega should release Dreamcast 2 on 9/9/09.

- joehobbes, on 12/05/2007, -5/+347I know I've said this many times before, but the Dreamcast is the most underrated console of all time. There were so many great games on the little white box that showed off every little bit of Sega's creativity. It was also very much ahead of its time with built-in online capabilities and such.
Anyway, I still recommend the Dreamcast just about any game that is willing to give it a try.
Here's some of the best reasons to look into it right now:
http://www.racketboy.com/retro/2006/10/best-dreamc ...- Elranzer, on 12/05/2007, -12/+35Underrated sure, but a small nostalgic fanbase is not enough for a "Dreamcast 2" (with nothing unchanged from the first DC, according to the article) to be an economically viable platform. I think what the author really wants is just just buy a Dreamcast.
Four consoles is too many, and Xbox was supposedly the spiritual successor to the Dreamcast anyway (when Peter Moore was head of Xbox division, at least).- mythicflux, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4Technically there already are 4 consoles on the market. The PS2 is still selling by a fair amount (more than the PS3).
If Sega wanted to focus on the low end game market they could probably produce a $99 Dreamcast 2 to compete exclusively with the PS2. This would be a perfectly feasible platform if Sega started it back up and simply tried to re-release thier existing software catalog for it (especially if a theoretical Dreamcast 2 had the ability to play old Sega games similar to the Wii virtual console and Xbox Live). 323 Dreamcast titles (plus old Genesis, Saturn, Etc games) is not too bad for a cheap $100 machine. Especially if Sega were to sell them at $20 (or $10) a piece.

- djphatjive, on 12/05/2007, -10/+16Isn't the xbox 360 basically a Dreamcast 2? Peter Moore??????
- dragon76, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9I think what's missing from the 360 is more arcade titles. SEGA was king of the arcades, creating impressive gaming with very little need to learn special moves or without needing to know much storyline. In the end, the titles were engrossing despite simple controls and light story. Shinobi, Altered Beast, Rolling Thunder, Golden Axe, etc.
- tfletch, on 12/05/2007, -0/+34Oh I was a major fan of the Dreamcast. You remember Chu Chu Rocket?
- DMRsweden, on 12/05/2007, -5/+1Chu Chu Rocket!!!! ^^,
- spyrochaete, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9Here's the insane Japanese commercial:
http://www.demodulated.com/crap/chuchu.mpeg - CrackyJSquirrel, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Oh man, still to this day when people start talking about DC, I always bring up chu-chu rocket..
- thehyperborean, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1chu chu rocket ftw! :) that game is awesome.
- AdonalFoyle, on 12/05/2007, -2/+47Hell yeah the DC was underrated, it was by far the easiest console to pirate!
- Loonacy, on 12/05/2007, -0/+52Yeah, I downloaded my Dreamcast the day it came out.
- UNL1M1T3D, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4That must have been a huge download.
- billybob217, on 12/05/2007, -2/+4In 1999 I was still on dial up... That download must have taken you eons... I couldn't possibly have afforded such a thing...
- Exbzurg, on 12/05/2007, -6/+1I also do not get the joke!!!! /sarcasm
- thehyperborean, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4ahh, yes. we had alllll the games for the dreamcast... just required popping in the ol' utopia boot loader first.
- Loonacy, on 12/05/2007, -0/+52Yeah, I downloaded my Dreamcast the day it came out.
- staticneuron, on 12/05/2007, -3/+4I did love the DC but asking for a new one after the unexplainable decline in quality from sega recently I am not to sure about that. They released jet set future which was ok but was missing something from the previous game and the sonics are horrible the Phantasy stars underwhelming. The only thing that manages to be decent are their tennis and the virtua fighter.
- Brodels, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3How did Sega Bass Fishing not get into that list?! I've been meaning to digg that out of my cupboard for a while now along with the fishing rod.
- WallnutBoy, on 12/05/2007, -2/+2Heheh.. You used 'digg' when you meant 'dig'.
Oh my what has Digg done to us all -_-
- WallnutBoy, on 12/05/2007, -2/+2Heheh.. You used 'digg' when you meant 'dig'.
- Kelmon, on 12/05/2007, -0/+8I'm sorry but where the hell is Metropolis Street Racer (MSR) on that list? That still ranks as the finest racing game as far as I am concerned, although I confess to not having played the later versions on the XBox/360 when the series was renamed to Project Gotham Racing. Sort it out.
- Cerebral, on 12/05/2007, -6/+1Underrated, absolutely. However the system had little to NO 3rd party support which is what initially kept people away from the system. IMO the PS2 was just too much for it to stand against. The PS2 had backwards compatibility with all previous games and was the first "cheap" DVD player at the time (sounds like the PS3 actually doesn't it). Other than that I don't want to see a new Dreamcast coming to the market. I do however want to see the same level of innovation out of developers as we saw while the DC was alive (Project Seaman anyone... yes I know II is coming).
- Spuy767, on 12/05/2007, -14/+2I liked my dreamcast. I liked Bleemcast. I just don't think that Sega can hack it any more. They were always paying second fiddle, first to nintendo, then to Sony. BTW, just bought a PS3 after owning a 360 for two years, and I can sayi without a doubt that the PS3 is far superior in graphical prowess.
- mywhitenoise, on 12/05/2007, -0/+12I own a PS3, and don't own a 360. I honestly don't see a difference in graphics, don't make us sound like idiots.
- turpenine, on 12/05/2007, -3/+2the ps3 has almost the exact same amount of graphical power, it is more powerful in physics areas though.
- Spuy767, on 12/05/2007, -14/+2I liked my dreamcast. I liked Bleemcast. I just don't think that Sega can hack it any more. They were always paying second fiddle, first to nintendo, then to Sony. - mrgreen4242, on 12/05/2007, -7/+2The Dreamcast was a decent machine, but the controller was awful. The main trouble with it, aside from lack of 3rd party support, which was more Sony's fault than Sega, imo, was that Sega kept releasing new machines. Genesis, Sega CD, 32x, Saturn, Dreamcast (I think I'm even missing one in there) ... in that time we had the SNES, N64 and barely got the Gamecube. None of those were runaway successes (except the SNES of course) but they made money.
- Shawn4168, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4In all fairness, the Sega CD and the 32x were simply addons for the console. The 32x could be considered the equivalent of the expansion pack on the N64, and the N64 also had the N64DD released in Japan (and we almost got it here in the states).
- expert01, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Agreed (in part). Playing Unreal Tournament with one joystick and four buttons for movement was unbearable.
- maexus, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1It was the same for Golden Eye
- stoanhart, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4I absolutely love the DC controller. One of my favorite controllers ever. XBox is my next favorite. I have no idea how people can stand the dual-shock. Eww.
- fuzzynyanko, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I dunno. Have you seen the quality of Sega games lately? Microsoft might have been able to come close since Peter Moore was their VP of gaming, but he's with EA now.
- Flakor, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I didn't get the chance to play it, but I really wanted to.
- Genjeta, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6To this day I still play my Dreamcast, I have no idea why it failed that badly. It had such amazingly fun games, I still say its better than atleast the Xbox and the gamecube. Shenmue and Sonic Adventure are two of my favorite game series, but the dreamcast has atleast a dozen more MUST HAVE games.
- applecrypt, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2joehobbes, I totally 100% agree. I've still got mine and i've a box load of games that are just incredible, even by todays standards. Shame ppl seemed to ignore it while waiting for the ps2 ! :(
- cbuddha42, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I still played my Dreamcast up until a few years ago. I had no problems with the controller and loved some of the games for it. I was still playing a bunch of games when the CD drive eventually died. It was a sad day because many of those were exclusive to Dreamcast or I hadn't re-bought for other reasons. I mean really, whats the point of buying NFL 2k7 or whatever they are on when you have NFL 2k?
- Ataxia87, on 12/05/2007, -2/+1For more Sega/Dreamcast/voyeuristic "news" see:

Honestly, this is not my blog, I don't care if you click on it or not. - i208khonsu, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2What sega could do is release a dreamcast pc emulator and sell it as well as a developer suite.
- pontiac, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2I too miss my Dreamcast. You may call me crazy but I miss my Saturn more :( Panzer Dragoon Saga was one of the most fun RPG gaming experiences I've ever had. And the Shining Forces series were fun too. The Saturn controller was also one of my favorite all time controllers, seriously the best for Capcom games. If Sega would just release a retro system that was meant to just play all of their old games Dreamcast and back I'm sure you see a ton of people go out and get them. None of their systems got the support they deserved. And they all had such great original games.
- TimDigg, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1Fire Pro Wrestling D!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
- Elranzer, on 12/05/2007, -12/+35Underrated sure, but a small nostalgic fanbase is not enough for a "Dreamcast 2" (with nothing unchanged from the first DC, according to the article) to be an economically viable platform. I think what the author really wants is just just buy a Dreamcast.
- duggtodeath, on 12/05/2007, -1/+136My friends and I still talk about this system today. It had internet capability out of the box (it could have rivaled PS2) and created something years before Xbox Live. It was also the first out the door so the system holds a lot of the arcade fighting games that have never been ported over to other consoles. The graphics card wasn't bad for its time either. Damn you, SEGA :(
- mu0p, on 12/05/2007, -1/+64OH DON'T REMIND ME OF THE DREAMCAST 2D FIGHTERS. My friends and i sunk probably years of our lives into Capcom vs. SNK 2 and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. The dreamcast ports of those games were near perfect because of the arcade boards that were used in the original games having a kinship with the DC hardware. Some of the best arcade ports ever. They just don't make 'em like that anymore.
Too bad sega is run by bumbling idiots and the console market is way crowded. I'd love to see DC again, i loved that system.- BlackOp, on 12/05/2007, -13/+33S > vs games.
- Cerebral, on 12/05/2007, -2/+7"We're gunna take you for a ride..."
- duggtodeath, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Amen to that!
- spinaltap87, on 12/05/2007, -0/+13I remember playing tons of Phantasy Star Online on the DC. That being said I cant believe how almost 10 years later online play for the Wii is so weak.
- macdude22, on 12/05/2007, -2/+4If I'm not mistaken Microsoft hired a number of the SegaNet folks to work on Xbox life so that right there was an advantage for them taking the next step while everyone else was taking their first.
- rarson, on 12/05/2007, -1/+4Sega was way ahead of it's time. Genesis had online capabilities. Remember Sega Channel?
This article pisses me off though.
"After all, this is a console that was advanced when it came out and disgustingly obsolete once the Playstation 2 hit store shelves just one year later."
Disgustingly obsolete? Yeah right! Soul Calibur kicked the crap out of pretty much every PS2 fighter. VF3 looked better on the Dreamcast than it did on the PS2. Hell, it even took them a year or so just to figure out how to get anti-aliasing to work on the PS2. It wasn't that the PS2 was a way better machine, it's that Sony hyped the crap out of it and everyone bought it. The fact that the DC could pretty much match the PS2 in graphics even though it came out a year earlier says a lot. Hell, I guess you could say we're seeing the same thing all over again with the 360 and the PS3. - heathuff23, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Well put! But its ability to play burned games without being modded really set it apart. I love it!
- darthchaosrspw, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1And don't forget that the early Dreamcasts had "out of the box" homebrew capabilities. NES emulators running at native speed, Atari 2600 emulatorsrunning at near native to native speeds, SNES emulators running at almost near native speed, homebrew games (Beats Of Rage, anybody?), VCD players, DivX video players, mp3 players, and so on.
- mu0p, on 12/05/2007, -1/+64OH DON'T REMIND ME OF THE DREAMCAST 2D FIGHTERS. My friends and i sunk probably years of our lives into Capcom vs. SNK 2 and Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. - estvir, on 12/05/2007, -2/+132When I think Dreamcast the first thing I think of is "Crazy Taxi" - oh how I loved that game and I don't know why. Also, Re-Volt was on the DC? I never knew that, it was heaps of fun on PC.
If I see a cheap DC about I'm going to pick one up.- Flamancot, on 12/05/2007, -1/+18word, crazy taxi.
- Browzer, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6Crazy Taxi rocked. Virtua Tennis was amazing, and Worms was a lot of fun, too. I had a group of friends that was very skeptical about the DC. Then I bought one and started lugging it over to their houses every weekend. It wasn't long before they all got their own. We still look back at that system fondly.
I am happy to say, though, that the XBox 360 feels like the spiritual successor to the DC.- rarson, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1Except the DC wasn't plagued with hardware problems.
- ratbear, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Multi player worms with one controller on the DC......Wasted many a smoke-filled night on that one.
- Browzer, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6Crazy Taxi rocked. Virtua Tennis was amazing, and Worms was a lot of fun, too. I had a group of friends that was very skeptical about the DC. - kertong, on 12/05/2007, -0/+22Crazy taxi is good, but samba de amigo + alcohol is possibly the most fun you can have with your clothes on. :)
- xkorbin, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1dreamcast is the leetest.
- brainster31, on 12/05/2007, -1/+9Jet Set Radio man Jet Set
- blackbeardtron, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5Skies of Arcadia!
- StormTroopr, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2And Grandia II to go with it.
- rarson, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2I still have a copy of Seaman.
- roosterjm2k2, on 12/05/2007, -2/+8I've got a few million laying around too.
- merdiesel, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1Soul Calibur to this day, is still one of the greatest games ever made.
What a great system the Dreamcast was. It was the first system I purchased with my own money. Worth every penny, seeing as that I still own it and it works just as good as the day I bought it. In the eyes of gamers, Sega did everything right. If only they put a god damn dvd player in there, things might have turned out entirely different.
- Flamancot, on 12/05/2007, -1/+18word, crazy taxi.
- SnowflakePillow, on 12/05/2007, -1/+53I bought one on ebay last year and I've had tons of fun with it! So many great games, including the best version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2!
- Skwerl, on 12/05/2007, -0/+6I wasted weeks of my life unlocking every level, costume, and character in that game. It was worth it to see that screen full of fighters, that game was a blast with 3 friends. The little VMU animations for the Soul Caliber fighters were great as well.
- rarson, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3I bought mine on launch. Best $200 console ever.
- JenadaeXX, on 12/05/2007, -2/+101Dreamcast was the so ahead of its time people just didn't seem to get it... How i miss thee...
- stilesja, on 12/05/2007, -3/+1Kind of like the Atari 5200
- diggdowner, on 12/05/2007, -1/+47I have three Dreamcasts myself!
(...though they all need some sort of repair...)- Lionhart, on 12/05/2007, -5/+54At least you don't have three PS3s.
- Keitosha, on 12/05/2007, -1/+8But i have 3 PS..... oh crap! :/
- erkokite, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2I had a DC with a broken PS. If you look up the pinout for the power connector on the motherboard and a normal ATX power supply, you can see that you can use an ATX PS with the DC. I did it myself. Only requires a couple of wires- no special components.
- benitojuarez, on 12/05/2007, -15/+106Personally even after all these years, I think the graphics on the dreamcast blow the ps2 away.
- JenadaeXX, on 12/05/2007, -8/+65Blow away? No. Compare? Very much so.
- MASTERPL, on 12/05/2007, -0/+19I remember seeing both side by side at Fry's electronics. I personally owned a DC before a PS2 because side by side the DC had better graphics imo.
- DarkDx, on 12/05/2007, -1/+15That was true until the developers finally got into all ps2's hardware, but if you consider the DC was older, it was a aconplishment, go sega!
- Xephyr, on 12/05/2007, -2/+8Oh how I'd love to know what an aconplishment is.
- RickyBennett, on 12/05/2007, -11/+2i thank it had better graphics then the xbox did i spent $50 on a dc at a pondshop and got my favorite games off ebay
- Jeffler, on 12/05/2007, -2/+14Pondshop? Maybe thtas why you thought it had better graphics than an Xbox, because it was all underwater?
- Jeffler, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2Apologies for butchering the word that's, by the way.
- RickyBennett, on 12/05/2007, -5/+1dud you ever hear of typos
and if i recall when the xbox came out they sead you can see every blade of grass which was not true on my sonic adventures game you can see every blade
at the time it had better graphics - benitojuarez, on 12/06/2007, -0/+2Holy ***** I hope english isn't your first language.
- Jeffler, on 12/05/2007, -2/+14Pondshop? Maybe thtas why you thought it had better graphics than an Xbox, because it was all underwater?
- solid12345, on 12/05/2007, -1/+14Dreamcast's graphics were always brighter and more colorful due to its extra video ram. Even the best visual Playstation 2 games still have muddy textures.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4That's not mud.
- HypocriteDigg, on 12/05/2007, -3/+3Not only were the graphics comparable, but it was smaller and had a 'cover' type CD drive instead of a 'tray load'. I loved it. I just sold my mint condition one on ebay a few months ago.
Oh, not to mentions it had MUCH MUCH better games!!!- juicebag, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1Can't say I agree. Most of the DC's best games are now on another system. And anyway, IMO PS2 had better games.
- MagicCake, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3Not quite, but they do compare to early PS2 games. However, the DC did have some games with some really sharp textures, and I'm a sucker for good textures.
- erkokite, on 12/05/2007, -3/+4The DC also supported DUDV bump mapping (between DOT3 and Emboss mapping in quality- also the best way to do water without a fragment shader). The PS2 didn't support bump mapping other than emboss mapping. Apparently now you can cheat it into doing DOT3, but there is probably a good sized performance hit. So that is one way the DC did indeed have superior graphical capabilities to the PS3.
- rarson, on 12/05/2007, -0/+7DC games were also better-looking because of hardware anti-aliasing. It took PS2 programmers a while to figure it out, but in my opinion, even the latest greatest PS2 games tend to have a certain graininess to them that all Playstation (1 and 2) games seem to have. Dreamcast might not have been able to push quite as many polygons as the PS2, but they were much prettier polygons.
- SpeedSteamBoat, on 12/05/2007, -2/+1I actually like the "grainy" look better personally. I guess I just identify it with Playstation and the endless hours a spent pounding at grey or black controller growing up. Regardless, the lack excessive smudging and AA comes off as more mature to me. It's part of why playing Halo always reminded me of those soft-ish plastic cars and sandboxes you play with as a kid. Rounded corners and semi-soft materials so you don't hurt yourself. PC games have a similar appeal.
- baldgye, on 12/05/2007, -0/+30i'd love there to be a dreamcast 2, and i loved the little tamagotchi memory card thing... i never owned one, but it had some cool games and was out well before the ps2
- EdgarVerona, on 12/05/2007, -0/+22Yeah. I remember that, you could upload critters from the Sonic Adventure game and play with them on the memory card. It was disturbingly more addictive than the Sonic game itself. =)
- Hazardc, on 12/05/2007, -0/+6it was also nice for sports games to see your plays on the controller so your opponent had no idea what you were picking
- dafragsta, on 12/05/2007, -2/+3That is something that desperately needs to come back. I still don't know why controllers don't have full color LCDs, even if they are only 1.5"
- Hazardc, on 12/05/2007, -0/+6it was also nice for sports games to see your plays on the controller so your opponent had no idea what you were picking
- PixelD, on 12/05/2007, -1/+16Yeah until after the first week and the $5 batteries died. Then everytime you turned it on all you heard was that awful high pitched while.
- ubergeek09, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Ah yes I love the memory card
- MagicCake, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Yeah that was actually a really cool idea. They got a lot of ***** for it, but I liked the VMU. The battery life was awful though, and those little batteries were like $8...
- EdgarVerona, on 12/05/2007, -0/+22Yeah. I remember that, you could upload critters from the Sonic Adventure game and play with them on the memory card. It was disturbingly more addictive than the Sonic game itself. =)
- JordanM85, on 12/05/2007, -55/+5The Dreamcast showed the competition exactly what not to do. Sega is better off just making games. And do we really need a 4th system on the market?
- Anorhc, on 12/05/2007, -1/+10In short: Yes. For what reason: I have no idea.
- Juntistik, on 12/05/2007, -0/+8I would love a 4th system in the market. Why? More/better games.
- RxDaniel, on 12/05/2007, -11/+8Do we need 4 consoles? No. I vote Microsoft leave since they were last to join.
- itsthebrod, on 12/05/2007, -9/+6Yes, get rid of the most successful one. You're brilliant aren't you!
- slicecom, on 12/05/2007, -5/+7Haha I hate to break it to you, but Microsoft has never had the most successful console. PS2 was the most successful of last generation and Wii is the most successful so far this one. Wii has sold more units than 360 in half the time.
- BabyWookie, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4The Wii is not in this generation though. It competes with the PS2.
- Bootes, on 12/05/2007, -2/+3It's pretty easy to become popular when you're losing money like crazy. A company that actually needs profits will have a hard time competing against MS. The question is can the Xbox be remotely successful when MS forces it's games division to start making profits.
- itsthebrod, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1The 360 is no longer losing money. Look it up.
- Bootes, on 12/06/2007, -0/+1Uhm MS has had two quarters in which their game division did not lose money. At the release of Halo 2 and at the release of Halo 3.
- WhereAmI, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1The whole Xbox thing from the beginning has just had profitable times. And with the RRoD woes and the fact they think they can make 30 million dollars from GTA IV exclusive content, they sure aren't responsible.
- slicecom, on 12/05/2007, -5/+7Haha I hate to break it to you, but Microsoft has never had the most successful console. PS2 was the most successful of last generation and Wii is the most successful so far this one. Wii has sold more units than 360 in half the time.
- itsthebrod, on 12/05/2007, -9/+6Yes, get rid of the most successful one. You're brilliant aren't you!
- MagicCake, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2The fourth system thing is a good point, but... Dreamcast, man. Dreamcast.
- Anorhc, on 12/05/2007, -1/+13After finals are out, I'm going to be digging out my Dreamcast. It had the games that I've ever wanted in a console, which were arcade ports and shoot'em ups. Don't see many of those on the shelves of stores.

- bysin, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9I agree... Now excuse me, I got a fork lift to drive.
- MagicCake, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3Do you know where I can find some sailors?
Kidding, kidding. I loved Shenmue, and I was so disappointed with the brutal cliffhanger at the end of the second one. They need to wrap that ***** up, Dreamcast 2 or not. - coyoteblue, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1also, more power stones and sonic adventure

- MillionsLivio, on 12/05/2007, -0/+19I still play mine, Sword of Berserk is great.
- mickhead, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2That game was an interactive movie. But I loved it.
10 minutes of cutscene. 5 minutes of gameplay. repeat.
Still awesome though.- MillionsLivio, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Watch the Berserk anime if you liked it, or even better read the manga.
- mickhead, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2That game was an interactive movie. But I loved it.
- tizona, on 12/05/2007, -1/+28and while you're at it... bring us Shenmue 3 >_>
- EdgarVerona, on 12/05/2007, -1/+22Ah, Shenmue. Never before or since has a game so accurately modeled social awkwardness in conversations.
Don't get me wrong, I loved the game. But watching the long pauses, frequent "Umm"s, and strained expressions on characters when they talked to each other definitely made me uncomfortable. It was like watching a verbal train wreck. When I was a kid I played through Shenmue 1, and I was pretty much convinced by the end that most people in Japan must have Aspberger's Syndrome if everyone on the street talks to each other like that. - mikecc, on 12/05/2007, -3/+3Haha, I never was able to beat Shenmue, and I ended up using Shenmue specifically to play Space Harrier on that other Sega system in his house's living room!
- EdgarVerona, on 12/05/2007, -1/+22Ah, Shenmue. Never before or since has a game so accurately modeled social awkwardness in conversations.
- omgroffles, on 12/05/2007, -3/+88Honestly for me, the PS2 was a step back as the Dreamcast took such a huge (but widely unrecognized or appreciated) step forward for consoles.
- dremelofdeath, on 12/05/2007, -0/+31I still have my console I got (early) for Christmas that year, back in '99. I can remember happily bragging about how awesome I was that I had one of the first Dreamcasts. I had Sonic Adventure and Rippin' Riders (for those of you that remember the launch titles) and I subscribed to the official Dreamcast Magazine. I was cool.
If that isn't nostalgia, I don't know what is. Sega, bring back the Dreamcast.
(Oh yeah, and make it backwards compatible... who knows, maybe even downloadable retro Dreamcast games!)- EdgarVerona, on 12/05/2007, -4/+18Aye. I blew the first 400 bucks I made at my first job in High School on the Dreamcast and all 4 controllers etc...
When it went under a few months later, I realized I had learned a valuable lesson. Don't be an early adopter.- nakani, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1Whattttt? DC had ill games coming out en masse for at least 2-3 years after it launched. And then they kept trickling in after it "died" (Ikaruga, Rez, etc)
- ihaterobots, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3I did the same thing. I was the only one to get it the day it came out. I had organized a dorm floor Soul Caliber tournament the week all week leading up to launch day. Got back from the mall and played all night. I loved my DC :)
- EdgarVerona, on 12/05/2007, -4/+18Aye. I blew the first 400 bucks I made at my first job in High School on the Dreamcast and all 4 controllers etc...

- egthareal, on 12/05/2007, -48/+2grow up peterpan the dreamcast was mediocrity at its best.
- Tippis, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5Not so. It was a perfect little network intrusion device...
- vocalyouth, on 12/05/2007, -0/+20I bought a used Dreamcast for like $25 a few years ago and an assortment of games from various used bins. I have easily played it more than I ever played my PS2. Also turned out to have a lot of my favorite games. It got me back into gaming at a time that I wasn't very interested in it anymore. I really wish Sega would get back into the console market, though I have always seen the Xbox to be the sort of spiritual successor to the Dreamcast (similar controller, good online setup, original Xbox had Shenmue 2 here in the US and for a while came packed with Sega GT and Jet Set Radio Future). All the Sega support is what actually sold me on original Xbox. I haven't bought a Sega branded game in a few years though, now, I don't think, since they branched the sports off to 2K. Either way, Dreamcast was a great system and if you find one laying around somewhere for cheap it's absolutely worth your time to pick one up and a stack of games. (must play: Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia, Jet Grind Radio, Soul Caliber)
- nakani, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2To add to your list: Street Fighter 3, Rez, Crazy Taxi, Chu Chu Rocket, Sonic Adventure, Powerstone, Virtua Tennis, NFL2K_
- orca94, on 12/05/2007, -1/+73***** yeah.
The Dreamcast is the most highly underrated console of all time. Anyway I think I'll go back to playing some Power Stone.- usingpond, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5GO FOR IT!!
- saysomestuff, on 12/05/2007, -0/+8Power Stone, what a game, still one of the few fun 4 players.
- ParaSwarm, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3Power Stone 1 is 2-player, Power Stone 2 is 4-player. In my opinion the first one is better... wasn't a huge fan of the second one but it's still good in it's own way.

SEGA DREAMCAAAAAST. - doctordbx, on 12/05/2007, -22/+3I think it's fair to say a lot of the Dreamcast's legacy lives on in the Xbox360.
- danfuturo, on 12/05/2007, -6/+16sure it is. After all, DC was all about FPS, right?
[/s]- Juntistik, on 12/05/2007, -8/+4Have you even looked at the 360 game library? There are plenty of games that aren't first person shooters..

- talkingwires, on 12/05/2007, -3/+3For those digging his comment down, ever hear of Peter More? He worked on launching both consoles, and it a way, the Dreamcast's lineage follows through to the 360. 1UP did a funny look at at the similarities between the consoles around the 360's launch: http://www.1up.com/do/feature?cId=3145154

"Umm... crazy but advanced controller... innovative gameplay... thumbs it's nose at the competition...
Sounds like you want a Wii. Ha!
Who are these "suits" you keep talking about, anyway?" - Frostman3D, on 12/05/2007, -29/+6I had a dreamcast, bought it the day it came out. It was pretty cool, had some cool games. but it's dead and gone, PS2 killed it, we have much better game systems now....

- dikaiosyne, on 12/05/2007, -4/+17I bought a Dreamcast on opening night. I still have my fishing rod and broadband adapter along with an assortment of games. Too many zombies were humping in the PS2 orgy to realize the diamond in the rough that the Dreamcast was. The 360 is essentially an improved Dreamcast with a Bill Gates stamp of approval.
- dobesov, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3This is exactly what I was going to say. Thank you for saying it first. The xbox360 is the spiritual successor of the dreamcast.

- SPARTACVS, on 12/05/2007, -14/+4"I would like to see the innovative gameplay that used to be Sega's hallmark to come back and solidify itself on the new platform. I want a console that thumbs its nose at the competition and is created for the benefit of gamers -- not suits. I want a second Dreamcast that balks at derivative gameplay and welcomes an online space and old-fashioned gaming that will let the younger gamers among us finally see what it's like to play in a world where games are made for gamers and not for a profit."
It's called an "Xbox 360". :/ - axisnate02, on 12/05/2007, -2/+63Three Words.
PHANTASY STAR ONLINE.- RenaChan, on 12/05/2007, -0/+9RIP Sakura the FOnewearl level 174 when they brought down the servers i lost a little bit of my soul.
- Corinthos, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3Especially when V1 was free here in the states. It wasn't worth a monthly fee when they did a horrible job with updates and keeping the servers cheat free. I lost too many items because someone would freeze my character. Luckily I was never the victim of NOL.
- skippy562, on 12/05/2007, -7/+0very good...it looks like someone passed 1st grade!
- EvaMonkey01, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4Ah PSO, one of my fondest memories in Gaming, killing Ragrappies for fun, Beating the 4 forms of the final boss, picking up my first Spread Needle and knowing that I'll never change weapons again, bliss.
OH and the chat function, the friendship I made, the fun I had in just standing around talking in the hub, and I'll never forget the day some noob tried to freeze me and disconnected himself instead.
I miss it :( - sonycam, on 12/05/2007, -0/+4PSO was my first real online gaming experience. It seems repetitive to me right now (I bought a gamecube just so I could play PSO, and for some reason it sucked), but at the time, it blew me and all of my time away. I was amazed that I was speaking and making friends with people all over the world from my console. There was nothing like playing ruins at very hard mode with 3 friends. I would LOVE a Dreamcast 2.
- regine44, on 12/05/2007, -0/+0I think the reasons it sucked was that there was no keyboard for the game cube when they did release one it was so expensive it wasn't worth it.
- MisterSam, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5I have to second this. I loved PSO so much. For its time it was simply amazing. Beating Dark Falz on Very Hard for the first time with three other people was amazing. Finding my first double sabre, what a moment.
Seeing rare creatures, such as pal rappy or hildeblue, so awesome.
Playing PSO online were some of my best moments in gaming. It came out at the perfect time and just created a special atmosphere and moment in the history of gaming. - cambob76, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1I see five words.

- Ghoztt, on 12/05/2007, -0/+26Heh, recently I sold every single one of my gaming systems I've kept throughout the years. NES... Genesis... N64... PS2... Gamecube... you name it. I had it.
....but I kept my Sega Dreamcast. Incredible selection of some TIMELESS games (Powerstone, Jet Set Radio, Bangai-O, Rez, Skies of Arcadia to name a few), and the BEST CONTROLLER EVAR!!! DUGG.- serpentor, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6I notice you left the SNES off that list of sold systems. I bloody hope that was intentional (and that you owned the SNES to begin with).
- bungoman, on 12/05/2007, -1/+12why on earth would you sell all your video game systems? i would start selling my own organs before i sold any of my consoles.
- schoate09, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1So true. Regrettedly, I sold all of my old consoles a few years ago, and last year, I put down about $300 at the flea market to get (used ones in nice condition) every one and the games back.
- bungoman, on 12/05/2007, -1/+12why on earth would you sell all your video game systems? i would start selling my own organs before i sold any of my consoles.
- Cerebral, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3I'm sorry but the controller was not the BEST EVER. I always wanted the DC to have a 2nd analog stick on it. Other than that, Yes the controller was perfect.
- nakani, on 12/05/2007, -0/+2The only thing it sucked at was 6-button fighters. You always had to "sacrifice" the mediums by assigning them to the triggers
- MagicCake, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1...Why on earth would you sell all that?!
- serpentor, on 12/05/2007, -1/+6I notice you left the SNES off that list of sold systems. I bloody hope that was intentional (and that you owned the SNES to begin with).
- marccarroll, on 09/22/2008, -2/+2The reason I would like to see a Dreamcast sequel is because of Sega. I haven't bought a Sega title for over a year since (imo) the quality of Sega games have dropped. Perhaps they need to be under pressure, like when they were under pressure to great high quality first-party titles, to create great games again.
- zhulien, on 12/05/2007, -1/+16it's funny when people talk about consoles like this in past tense. I still play my DC all the time, and still buy games for it. last new game I bought was released *THIS* year!

- RxDaniel, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3You haven't played recent sonic games have you?
- Hortinstein, on 12/05/2007, -0/+10i agree gaming on the Dreamcast were my last few great gaming years, and I wouldnt trade anything for my memories of Shenmue I and II, Ikaruga, Bangai-O, House of the Dead 2, Crazy Taxi, Tech Romancer. Than there was Phantasy Star Online...my favorite game of all time, and really the first game that got me into an online community.
- Hortinstein, on 12/05/2007, -0/+15I also have to mention that the dreamcast was my first online enabled device at home. We didn't have a computer at the time, and my parents refused to get internet, so i would hack bluelight k-mart temp trial codes so I could use them over direct dialing to play pso. I would also chat on AIM over IRC
I think it was like "/msg hortinstein send screenname message" to even send an im...maybe thats why i am such a good typer- smoger, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3i used to use NetZero accounts, because we had AOL and it didn't support connections from the Dreamcast
- xtianbretz, on 12/05/2007, -0/+16Doesn't anyone remember Sword of the Berzerk? That was my personal favorite of the bunch. Plus the villain characters name was "Ballzack".
- LeviticusKrain, on 12/05/2007, -0/+3You probably already know but if you don't, check out the manga or anime called Berserk if you want that whole storyline continued. Personally my fav/only anime/manga I can watch nowadays without some annoying main character.

- mrASSMAN, on 12/05/2007, -0/+16I was in need of cash a few months ago so I decided to sell my dreamcast system.. and it was bought immediately on Craigslist. I now regret that decision immensely. :(
- colincornaby, on 12/05/2007, -5/+10Maybe Sega should learn how to make good games first. Don't get me wrong, I was a huge Sega fanboy back in the day... But they haven't had a good game in a while. They're not ready to make their own console again.
- edicius, on 12/05/2007, -0/+5Personally, I think that Sega is better at making games for their own consoles than they are at making games for other consoles. And if that is the case, then they need to come out with a new console to really shine as a great game developer again. I would like to see Sega replace Sony as the third console in the market, that would make for some great gaming. Sony has never really innovated in gaming IMHO.
- appleseed1234, on 12/05/2007, -0/+0The only problem is Sega's fallen on their face so many times in the last decade that they just don't have enough money or support to make a console, the only publishing companies on the market that I see capable of it are Activision and EA (and they won't). But who knows? Sega's been making a steady monetary comeback in the past 3 years, and if they get their ***** together, especially with all of the recent eyesore Sonic games, its possible.

- Dorepoll, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3Or on Live. With the XBOX Originals coming in, it might happen.
- schoate09, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1More likely on live. I don't think the Wii's processor is capable of emulating a DC (Hell, my Core2Duo cant), plus the Wii has a lack of RAM.
- GreyICE, on 12/05/2007, -1/+2Ugh. I mean, Dreamcast had some ahead-of-time features, but a time-traveling core wasn't one of them. The Wii and the Core2Duo both have more than enough horses to emulate Dreamcast with cycles to spare. Doesn't mean that the emulation software exists, or is efficient, but the hardware sure as hell can do it.
- schoate09, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1More likely on live. I don't think the Wii's processor is capable of emulating a DC (Hell, my Core2Duo cant), plus the Wii has a lack of RAM.

- MagicCake, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1GameTap has like 5, and they're *****. If they kept it up and got more of them, then great, but it's not looking like it.
- Shawn4168, on 12/05/2007, -0/+10Too bad a single Dreamcast game is more than double the Wii's internal storage :(
- radishes, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1I know at least a few of the shooters are. Trigger Heart, Ikaruga, and Rez HD. Think there's a couple others, but it's slipping my mind right now.
Hopefully, if these do well enough, they'll continue the trend.
- Dorepoll, on 12/05/2007, -1/+3Or on Live. With the XBOX Originals coming in, it might happen.
- tengeta, on 12/05/2007, -1/+14I sold my Dreamcast in 8th grade... then severely regretted it, but in my Junior year of high school I got an offer to buy one off a friend going to college (he needed both space and money, score for me) and I got the system with 6 controllers, 12 vmu's, and some controller extension cords for just 25 bucks. He already sold the games so I had to get those on Ebay, but still it was and to this day is awesome. I'm gonna keep this stuff till its too broken to use... I've petitioned Sega personally to bring the Dreamcast back... but now it would need enough changes to make a Dreamcast II. They still should though, if they actually did things right and realized how the few fans they got are almost 100% insane about the system, they could get more to do the same.
As for now, I think I'm going to go play some Power Stone 2. (Get that one while you can Dreamcast owners... its hard to find and getting more expensive)- llkk33vv11nn, on 12/05/2007, -0/+1Powerstone/Powerstone 2..... brings back memories

- mythicflux, on 12/05/2007, -1/+1Why not? Haven't you seen the mini Sega Genesis units they sell? Last year for Christmas I bought a Sega 6 in 1 Genesis controller. Basically it's a Genesis controller that has 6 Genesis games and connects to your TV visa composite cables. For about $20 bucks to boot. Point is that re-releasing a console in a new form is something that Sega currently does.
