- metroidragon, on 03/05/2008, -31/+4how... semi-tasteful.
- Chompy, on 03/05/2008, -0/+24Bah, anyone who knows anything about Gygax knows that he'd be the first to make jokes like this about himself.
He's up in heaven right now, and he's rolling all natural 20s.
- Chompy, on 03/05/2008, -0/+24Bah, anyone who knows anything about Gygax knows that he'd be the first to make jokes like this about himself.
- Greatn3ss, on 03/05/2008, -8/+124I see what they did there.
- thatfunman, on 03/05/2008, -16/+1Rollin' like a dice?
- Shaflugi, on 03/05/2008, -1/+16The singular of "dice" is "die"
- Enasni1212, on 03/05/2008, -0/+13I see what you may or may not have done there...
- spacefaced, on 03/06/2008, -4/+3Not like Di like her name is Di, but Di like when she died.
- Shaflugi, on 03/05/2008, -1/+16The singular of "dice" is "die"
- tocsy, on 03/05/2008, -1/+13Yeah, I literally said to myself, "Why would he be rolling in his grave? Wait.... OHHHH."
- Myst3r1o, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4You know... it didn't hit me until you said "rolling" in your topic even though I seen it say "rolling" in the image. Wow... clever.
- thatfunman, on 03/05/2008, -16/+1Rollin' like a dice?
- bradleyjx, on 03/05/2008, -5/+25ha ha ... triple entendre

- felidaeus, on 03/06/2008, -6/+1an entedre is a sexual pun.
So what, the rolling refers to his wizard robe and hat?- TheKrillr, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3um, no. entendre in english equates to meaning (though in french its the verb "To Hear"). a double entendre is a "double meaning", and triple entendre would be triple meaning.
and um... its "I take off my robe and wizard hat..." not wizard robe and hat. :-p- felidaeus, on 03/09/2008, -0/+1http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_entendre
I'll go with both correct for 500 and leave it at that.

- ToMZiLLA, on 03/05/2008, -16/+6He didn't have enough resist
- iceblademan, on 03/05/2008, -3/+56He's probably rolling so many natural 20's now
- Xondar, on 03/05/2008, -4/+7Actually, Hell is where you ONLY roll natural 20s.
- Chompy, on 03/05/2008, -0/+15No, hell is where the DM only rolls natural 20s.

- korea, on 03/05/2008, -51/+5What the...? When did xkcd start showing signs of effort toward some graphic artistry?
Oh, I see. - chrissku, on 03/05/2008, -33/+1If I had a penny for everytime someone tried to show me this.........
- paradigmx, on 03/06/2008, -0/+0you'd have an Arcade?
- Jadinlee, on 03/05/2008, -91/+2I hate all these tributes that are nothing more than sad attempts at driving traffic to their site.
- zephyear, on 03/05/2008, -1/+58i doubt the PA guys are worried about not enough traffic, sort of the most popular video game webcomic on the internet
- Forbizzle, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3Penny-Arcade was one of the original pages that would bring down servers from linking
- logicalnoise, on 03/05/2008, -0/+27Tycho has played pen and paper RPGs since he was 6 and is an active fantasy author. He's an honest to god fan of everything greg did.
- lunacite, on 03/05/2008, -0/+11If by greg....you mean Gary...then I concur
- logicalnoise, on 03/05/2008, -0/+5derp my bad.
- lunacite, on 03/05/2008, -0/+11If by greg....you mean Gary...then I concur
- kdamp, on 03/05/2008, -1/+34Yeah Jadin, you're right. Penny Arcade is really hurting for traffic. Oh, what new lows will they stoop to?!
- dood, on 03/05/2008, -0/+18They might start up some charity to help entertain sick kids. So transparent, their motives!
- xsidekick409, on 03/06/2008, -0/+17 "The first time I ever played Dungeons & Dragons, I was six years old - books with great red demons on the cover that dared us to claim their riches, subtitled by this alien name Gygax. My mother was furious when she found my uncles had exposed me to those subterranean burrows, spilling over with rubies, and tourmalines, and the wealth of old kings even songs no longer remember. As a young man, I began hiding the books I bought inside my bed, which had a vast hollow space I had hidden in as a child. These books were soon discovered, and blamed for everything from recent colds to the dissolution of my parents' marriage. I took the wrong lesson, I'm afraid: I didn't learn to fear them. What I learned was that books, some books, were swollen with power - and this power projected into the physical realm. Some books contain the machinery required to create and sustain universes.
I owe a tremendous debt to his legacy. I couldn't even calculate how deep. "
-Tycho
Don't bash something without having a solid reason for doing so.

- TheTaint, on 03/05/2008, -14/+1Somehow I find this semi-tasteful.
- CavalierEternal, on 03/05/2008, -28/+27Rather than make the obligatory D&D references to stats or rolling die, I'll just say farewell to a true visionary.
- Aeaus, on 03/05/2008, -4/+34Rather then get dugg up, you'll get buried.
- Llanowar, on 03/05/2008, -1/+31Much like Gary Gygax.
- TobiasParker, on 03/06/2008, -0/+15If Gary Gygax gets dugg up, his family is going to be pissed.
- Llanowar, on 03/05/2008, -1/+31Much like Gary Gygax.

- krellor, on 03/05/2008, -1/+15nerd check: fail.
- korea, on 03/05/2008, -3/+11Gygax was a visionary and his original ideas will be used for a long time. Heck, its largely preferred over newer editions of the game.
- BoneheadFarker, on 03/05/2008, -5/+2For as creative as he was, he still owes a lot to Tolkin. He's probably showing Tolkin how far he expanded on the novels right now. I doubt Tolkin will full appreciate the 20-sided dice though...
- Coffeedemon, on 03/05/2008, -1/+12Tolkien too.
- stretch611, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1At first I thought the rolling in the grave comment was a knock against the new 4th edition until I realized the pun.

- aefven, on 03/05/2008, -2/+64It's more tasteful than G4's The Feed had:
"Saving Throw Failed: Gygax Dead"- Ballchinian, on 03/05/2008, -0/+52Well, thats because G4 is not good for anything.
- aefven, on 03/05/2008, -1/+14Amen... except for Sessler. I like Sessler.
- punkcat, on 03/05/2008, -1/+14i'd say sessler and the webb girl are ok. but i would seriously fire any others.
- Jibberwalk, on 03/06/2008, -1/+10Odd, how the only two remnants of TechTV are the only ones (I'm going to safely assume) we as a collective like.
Man, I'm still bitter about that. Rev3 is great and all... but TechTV was got me heavy into computers when I was growing up. - stretch611, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4"TechTV was got me heavy into computers when I was growing up.".
Thank you very much for making me feel old. When I was a teenager MTV actually played music videos.
- punkcat, on 03/05/2008, -1/+14i'd say sessler and the webb girl are ok. but i would seriously fire any others.

- Curlz31, on 03/05/2008, -33/+3Does anyone else have no idea what the hell this means?
- MrNewbie, on 03/05/2008, -10/+0THANK YOU!
Stop Digging him (and probably I) down, and bloody well explain it.- DarthSupero, on 03/05/2008, -0/+17Gary Gygax created D&D. D&D involves rolling dice. Rolling in one's grave is a well-known expression. Hence, 'rolling in his grave'.
Seriously, you guys might be on the wrong website.- Curlz31, on 03/05/2008, -6/+2Finally...thank you.
- DarthSupero, on 03/15/2008, -0/+1You're welcome.

- MrNewbie, on 03/05/2008, -10/+0THANK YOU!
- ChairShot83, on 03/05/2008, -3/+12With Jesus making regular appearances in their comics, this is rather toned down compared to their other work.
Still funny, I'm just saying..- danwallace, on 03/05/2008, -9/+29The difference being that Gygax was a real guy who died.
- amercer, on 03/05/2008, -4/+15Zing!
- Syphon8, on 03/05/2008, -6/+20Jesus was also a real guy who died.
- BoneheadFarker, on 03/05/2008, -12/+2Prove it. And no, the Bible cannot be used as proof of anything...
- Coffeedemon, on 03/05/2008, -5/+7He did not say anything about "sons of god". There is supposedly some historical evidence that there was a Jesus. I think personally he was probably like the crazy guy by the bus stop and his legend got inflated over time.
- dla26, on 03/06/2008, -9/+2Check out "The God Who Wasn't There" (http://www.thegodmovie.com/). It makes a great case for how Jesus is just an amalgam of other legends and myths and most Christian holidays (Christmas and Easter in particular) have their roots in pagan traditions.
- Syphon8, on 03/06/2008, -1/+11Who said anything about the Bible? There's enormous evidence of his existence. He wasn't a man-God, but he was real.
- Skurt, on 03/06/2008, -7/+3Yeah, he died, then he came back to life! Anyone who has watched 'Night of the Living Dead' knows the only way to kill a Zombie is to shoot it in the head...
- BoneheadFarker, on 03/05/2008, -12/+2Prove it. And no, the Bible cannot be used as proof of anything...

- tinotheelf, on 03/05/2008, -4/+8If I'm not mistaken, it's a play on this Doug Marlette tribute to the Challenger astronauts:
http://www.metronc.com/images/article_photos/Marle ...- Wolfghost, on 03/05/2008, -0/+4Which shouldn't lessen Penny Arcade's tribute.
It's a old method (animal with single tear), that predates Marlette's tribute to the Challenger astronauts. I've seen it many times, first with Bill Mauldin's 1965 tribute to Winston Churchill (http://www.loc.gov/exhibits/churchill/interactive/ ... I doubt Mauldin was the first.
- Wolfghost, on 03/05/2008, -0/+4Which shouldn't lessen Penny Arcade's tribute.
- Plughie, on 03/05/2008, -3/+10Failed his saving throw versus death magic. :(
- Ploosheeta, on 03/05/2008, -12/+2I know someone else who will be rolling in his grave:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=oHg5SJYRHA0&feature=rel ...- neo1513, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4You have to wait until Rick Astley is dead to make that joke
- d0onut, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3Everyone at his funeral will be RickRoll'd.
- neo1513, on 03/06/2008, -0/+4You have to wait until Rick Astley is dead to make that joke
- nyadney, on 03/05/2008, -3/+7i dont usually like PA, (nor do i dislike) so i never go out of my way to see their comics, but this is pretty cool.
- U83rn008, on 03/05/2008, -0/+7My hats are off to Penny Arcade. Keep up the good work gents. And now a moment of silence for those who have passed on...
- nydwarf, on 03/05/2008, -0/+7RIP
- tehbored, on 03/05/2008, -0/+7My level 7 cleric salutes you Gary Gygax. I think I'll cast a brass d20 in his honor.
- stretch611, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1Does someone have a level 15 Cleric that can cast a "Resurrection" spell for him?
- Spoomeister, on 03/05/2008, -10/+3I normally don't bother with Penny Arcade - charitable work or no, their 15 minutes were used up long ago - but this was well done.
- SilentRamble42, on 03/05/2008, -0/+12This man deserves a d20 gun salute at his funeral.
- shakajumbo, on 03/05/2008, -0/+9more like a d20 magic missile salute
- Tortue, on 03/06/2008, -0/+6I am 43 now. I still love AD&D. I have most of the original book written at the time by Gary. I really can't find people my age around here who still play, if I could I would still play. In my teen years my obsession with AD&D, and the friends I made playing it, help keep me from other more dangerous teenage pitfalls.
- bearcat8543, on 03/06/2008, -1/+1dangerous teenage pitfalls...you mean getting laid?
- spinaltap87, on 03/06/2008, -15/+2on a semi-related note...the Penny-arcade forums are so ***** gay.
- D4N747, on 03/06/2008, -1/+5I'm amazed no one's ripped on the fact that he died at age 69.
- iofthestorm, on 03/06/2008, -0/+7Probably because that would be completely untasteful... but then, this is the internet.
- barc0de, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1Ah, the old "make untasteful joke while claiming the moral high ground" trick.
- topdeck55, on 03/06/2008, -0/+20He will be critically missed.
- Doomsan, on 03/06/2008, -9/+4I don't get it
- subcomandante, on 03/06/2008, -2/+3I'm as lost as you are man.
- RetardoCrisp, on 03/06/2008, -0/+3I think it is perfect. He would have loved it!
- BevansDesign, on 03/06/2008, -3/+2I didn't get it when I saw it on their site this morning ("Huh? Why is he rolling in his grave?") but seeing it a second time, I got it. And it's quite amusing.
...
Just so we're clear, they're talking about rolling dice, right? - Maas, on 03/06/2008, -1/+0I like Exiern's (a less well known and more in-genra comic) tribute comic a bit better, although it isn't as clever.
http://www.exiern.com/istrip_files/strips/20080305 ... - digicanmon, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1He rolled for initiative too soon.....
- metrovoxmusic, on 03/06/2008, -0/+0dugg for dazzling wordplay
- ZenMojo, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1-1d20 constitution, but +1d20 wisdom.
- masterthiefster, on 03/06/2008, -0/+2Expect "signed by Gary Gygax!" items to show up on eBay in five, four, three...
- Elliottx, on 03/06/2008, -1/+2....Lol
I bet some sweaty D&D maniacs will no doubt be offended by this... ¬_¬ - theasp18, on 03/06/2008, -0/+1it's awesome and i thought pretty classy. how else would you portray him? dressed up in a wizard's robe?
anyway, same type of humor if you like the CATS base slogan. Check it out if you like:
http://digg.com/politics/All_Your_White_House_Are_ ... - CyberSkull, on 03/07/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I didn't get it at first myself. I haven't played DnD in years. (I don't think NWN counts).
