Boobs or Brawn: How do gamers choose their virtual gender?
hellforge.gameriot.com — Sometimes, if the game permits it, we get to choose the gender we play. So which is it? Dudes or Boobs? People ’s reasoning for choosing one character over another can vary. Let’s explore some common player types now, and find out whether gamers really are just enjoying a fantasy world… or fantasizing about something completely different.
- 860 diggs
- digg it
- dig1x, on 09/28/2008, -6/+134Boobs. If I'm going to look at a half-naked 3D avatar of my choosing, I dont want a dude.
I'm not gay, not that there's anything wrong with that.- MacSuxWindozSux, on 09/28/2008, -18/+5Perv. lol!
- thcobbs, on 09/29/2008, -0/+10He'd only be a perv if he used the nudity patch for the sims and got off on it.
- Narcism, on 09/29/2008, -0/+5@thcobbs, that's different from porn how?
- otros, on 09/29/2008, -0/+6Because those bodies are like 8 pixels each?
- Narcism, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Pfft, I can get off looking at a muffin, doesn't mean *****.
- wily6, on 09/29/2008, -1/+12Dugg for Seinfeld reference lol
- JAGUART, on 09/29/2008, -5/+13You're a liar. Anyone who plays a chick likes to trick males into homosexual chat.
- darkfire79, on 09/29/2008, -8/+4Um.. and how exactly are they tricked? Obviously if the person is talking about #ing their vagina or something, that's not homosexual chat. Im gay and the last thing I want to hear about is vagina. And telling me how much you like my boobs isnt going to do anything for me either... even if I did have man boobs, and I dont, not that there's anything wrong with that. If people are doing it to trick others into homosexual chat.. it's for ***** and giggles. ( for the most part )
- warrenterr, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2there's a lot wrong with man boobs, especially if your not over 40.
- GlassAgate, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2Seinfeld did it!
Seinfeld did it! - Dracusis, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2Darkfire, we're digging you down because you didn't get the joke, not because of of your sexual preference.
- Shogi, on 09/29/2008, -1/+24I'm not gonna lie, sometimes I play a chick just to sucker other players into giving me free stuff or helping me out. Works like a charm too. Played Lineage 2 for a while as a chick, not half an hour into the game a GM showed up and asked me if I wanted any help.
Then I played up the girlyness and got free gold and weapons, but that's beside the point.- Cerialthriller, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4yeah i did this in WoW, the sluttier your name, the easier it is to find groups for stuff. But i realized this after helping out this "female" alot in FFXI only to find out she was a guy IRL.
- Dracusis, on 09/30/2008, -0/+2I played a female Heroes character with the same group for about 6 months before someone finally asked if I was really a girl, I answered "no" and you'd think I'd just killed their mothers or something. I never lied about my gender bending though, if someone asks I'll tell it straight.
- warrenterr, on 09/29/2008, -8/+5you know, choosing to look at fake female parts is nothing to be proud of.
- cwbypete, on 09/29/2008, -0/+14When it comes to fake female parts, pride just isn't an issue.
- Dustin00, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3The male parts are fake too... so choosing between fake female and fake male, I *still* would rather look at fake female parts for the duration of the game.
- MacSuxWindozSux, on 09/28/2008, -18/+5Perv. lol!
- voomfoo, on 09/28/2008, -3/+102I much rather look at the backside of a virtual chick for 15 hours than some dude.
- ufia, on 09/29/2008, -30/+6What does it say about you that you are willing to play as a female character for 15 hours? While you're at it, are you wearing your mom's lingerie too?
- dborgir, on 09/29/2008, -1/+11"What does it say about you that you are willing to play as a female character for 15 hours?"
That he'd rather look at a simulated woman for 15 hours than look at a simulated man... i'm pretty sure he explained that in his post
"While you're at it, are you wearing your mom's lingerie too?"
is there something wrong with that? - DNABeast, on 09/29/2008, -0/+11Of course I wear ladies underwear. I don't like men's underpants touching my privates. Gross.
- dborgir, on 09/29/2008, -1/+11"What does it say about you that you are willing to play as a female character for 15 hours?"
- LordVance, on 09/29/2008, -0/+11I almost always play whatever is animated better. Normally one or the other of a certain race/class will walk stupid enough to make the choice for me (take WoW as an example, human males walk like they have a stick up their arse, but female orcs have the worst casting animations I've ever seen... the choice for either race is made for me).
- johndavidjack, on 09/29/2008, -7/+2Or you could look at a real one...
- Demener, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2Some of us do that in addition to looking at virtual chicks.
- johndavidjack, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2^^^
This is the internet, do I have to believe you?
- warrenterr, on 09/29/2008, -1/+4okay.
- ufia, on 09/29/2008, -30/+6What does it say about you that you are willing to play as a female character for 15 hours? While you're at it, are you wearing your mom's lingerie too?
- Elliottx, on 09/28/2008, -8/+20I always pick a guy, and if I have the option to outfit him I give him clothes that make him look all mysterious and *****.
City of Heroes is a great example for this, I've made tones of different people using different styles. I always try to give them a hood or a mask though. Pretty fun.- LordVance, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Masks With Hair - 90% of my heroes and villains use that option :-)
I almost always play one of the giant males, but never the normal size male. Their running animation is too jacked. - Demener, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1It depends on the character I'm playing. I liked my Large body type male Elec brute just as much as my Necro Dark MM.
WoW I stared at my Male Tauren warrior scratching his ass for hundreds of hours so when I played Druid of course I rolled a female Tauren. All the male undead faces looked terrible to me so when I rolled UD warlock it was female.
Now I'm playing Warhammer, I love my Witch Elf (class is only female) but I made my Sorcerer male and Black orcs are not only an experiment in how ugly a toon you can make, but exclusively male.
- LordVance, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Masks With Hair - 90% of my heroes and villains use that option :-)
- adiyo011, on 09/28/2008, -1/+51Okay, in this MMO, women's armor was cheaper. Okay, ***** it. Done it for the boobs.
- Unremarkable, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2UO reference?
- Jabunx, on 09/28/2008, -23/+3That's what I say all the time! I pick the chick. Lawl.
- Ogedei, on 09/29/2008, -1/+14Dugg down for "saying" lawl.
- dsmx, on 09/29/2008, -2/+6Lets see you have a choice between looking at a hot chick for the rest of the game or a bloke for the rest of the game, hmm tough decision on which one to pick.
- MindTrigger, on 09/29/2008, -0/+8I guess I always see my characters as an extension of myself into the game world, so I choose male characters.
- koko775, on 09/29/2008, -2/+3I restate the article so i pick the corresponding gender to my chosen rationalization.
I'll most likely be dugg down for this, but...
Guys, RTFA. Seriously. READ THE ***** ARTICLE.
- koko775, on 09/29/2008, -2/+3I restate the article so i pick the corresponding gender to my chosen rationalization.
- MindTrigger, on 09/29/2008, -0/+8I guess I always see my characters as an extension of myself into the game world, so I choose male characters.
- Shogi, on 09/29/2008, -1/+35My main is almost always a guy, but that has more to do with which gender I associate with classes. Buff melee characters are almost always male for me, less physical support or nuker classes are fair game for chicks (especially healers and archers).
- GanjaSoulDiver, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3I'm the opposite, I like to look ***** up :D
- TheCatsProxy, on 09/29/2008, -7/+19That wasn't sexist at all.
- brsteve88, on 09/29/2008, -0/+12I'm sorry, it's a fact that the average man is physically stronger than the average women. A jacked barbarian man just looks more natural than a jacked barbarian woman.
- Shogi, on 09/29/2008, -0/+11It's not intended to be sexist at all. That's just the way I pick because that's the mental image I have. I have more than once played as a female melee basher tank character, and played as a male healer. Besides the melee characters are usually overly butch where as the support types tend to be more elegant, something I'd rather see played by a chick.
When I think of crushing skills and cleaving goblins in half with a huge axe, I think dude. When I think healer/magic/support, I think chick. Just the way my mental image of the classes has been shaped. Same way secretary brings to mind a woman, as does nurse, soldier brings to mind a guy, as does lumberjack. Not exclusively male or female roles, just my tendency.
If I were being sexist I'd say I don't play a female melee character because women are weak and could never fill that role.
- houndeyex, on 09/29/2008, -3/+1Warcraft III -> Night Elf Archer
'nuff said. - dragon76, on 09/29/2008, -0/+6I remember playing PSO when it first came out and choosing a Force because I love using magic. All the guys that were playing as the Androids and Robots were always giving me *****. That is until you get to a decent level (20 and up) and you can walk into a room an nuke the whole thing with one spell.
I think with the sophistication of games, it's not really gender that matters to most people that have more than a passing interest in a game, but class. People mainly pick the characters that look the coolest and that's really dependent on the game designer if it skews male or female or is balanced.- Soniti, on 09/30/2008, -0/+1So true. FOnewearl ftw.
- mr138, on 09/29/2008, -0/+0I like my main as a guy too, but he's usually a caster. Alt's are always chicks. Chicks with giants axes rock.
- DarkShroud, on 09/29/2008, -1/+15It depends on the game. Unless there is a difference in game play I prefer to look at a hot chick when I play for hours on end. But I'm not going to just play a game to look at girls, that's what the internet is for.
- happytedium, on 09/29/2008, -0/+11Depends what looks better/has better animations, because sometimes the male version just looks bad ass (ie. undead males in WoW, whereas most other races, females look better/have better animations).
- tm13lke, on 09/29/2008, -1/+25Sometimes I will roll a female character in WoW because all the guys are like "OMG GIRL" and give me free stuff.
- Lythium, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4My NElf rogue (F) has gotten tips for dancing. True story. Not even stripping or anything - just waiting for my party.
- ryananger, on 09/29/2008, -2/+5Have to agree with you on the whole WoW thing. Dranei females are just much better looking than Dranei males...
- Demener, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Dranei male is the only race I couldn't level to AT LEAST 5.
- tm13lke, on 09/29/2008, -1/+25Sometimes I will roll a female character in WoW because all the guys are like "OMG GIRL" and give me free stuff.
- carolinax, on 09/29/2008, -3/+6Question: Don't you associate your own level of connection with the player if its the same gender as you? Are you more invested because its a male character, or does your attention stick because its a female?
Either way - I generally go for female characters because I stick with my gender when I can (LOLLOL ACCESSORIES)- thesha1, on 09/29/2008, -0/+6i know that if i make an online friendship with a female character on WoW, i automatically assume they are a RL girl, even though i know plenty of guys IRL who play girls. so i then talk to them like they are a girl, and connect with them better. and then i find out they're guys and it changes everything. hah
- Blacksoth, on 09/29/2008, -0/+0 My investment in my character has nothing to do with it's gender model and everything to do with the time I've put into it and the parts I like about it including the class, professions, gear as a result of my work. I do think it's interesting that other women find it easier to talk to me though simply because I play a female character. I never claimed to actually be female ever. I guess looks DO matter to women.
- wrathofg0d, on 09/29/2008, -2/+39It was hilarious how guys who chose female characters in Age of Conan got screwed by a hilarious bug that made female characters attack slower. God, what a ***** game.
- Enasni1212, on 09/29/2008, -2/+18Was it hilarious?
- KMartSheriff, on 09/29/2008, -0/+13Yes.
- wrathofg0d, on 09/29/2008, -1/+14yes
- darkfire79, on 09/29/2008, -3/+0U guyz! I told you not to tell anyone.. thanks alot.
- datastorageguy, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Exactly why I am not buying Warhammer until it has been thoroughly tested for lameness by the community of people who buy every new MMO out due to hype.
- Enasni1212, on 09/29/2008, -2/+18Was it hilarious?
- D14BL0, on 09/29/2008, -1/+8I've always went with female characters when I play video games.
Except for racing games...- butterz730, on 09/29/2008, -1/+1I always play as a female in GTA IV, simply because in free mode people help me out more.
- MrFisty, on 09/29/2008, -1/+2Why not have both? Just like in real life.
- darkfire79, on 09/29/2008, -0/+0Well of course, I make all my avatars hermaphrodites.
- warrenterr, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1I know, i think games that let you choose only between male and female discriminate against transexuals
- bobjewback, on 09/29/2008, -2/+27i always try to make my character look like an exaggerated version of myself, thus very attractive and good with ladies
- Llanowar, on 09/29/2008, -5/+69I think you misspelled opposite.
- wily6, on 09/29/2008, -1/+15I nominate Llanowar for comment of the day.
- Sornos, on 09/29/2008, -0/+7Llanowar Digger
Tap for win. - klasital, on 09/29/2008, -5/+0lol that's just hilarious. typical digger are good with ladies, guess not
- Llanowar, on 09/29/2008, -5/+69I think you misspelled opposite.
- Ogedei, on 09/29/2008, -1/+10Valkyrie needs food badly. Valkyrie is about to. aaaagggghhhhhhh!
- DAC1138, on 09/29/2008, -8/+1Dugg for boobs
tee hee hee - lukekim91, on 09/29/2008, -17/+2screw you. two of my friends died trying to decide between boobs or brawn
- soccerman90, on 09/29/2008, -2/+1screw you. two of my friends died saying; screw you. two of my friends died trying to decide between boobs or brawn
- Demener, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2screw you, both of your comments were buried for using this meme.
- Cerialthriller, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2screw you, 2 of my friends got buried when they died
- soccerman90, on 09/29/2008, -2/+1screw you. two of my friends died saying; screw you. two of my friends died trying to decide between boobs or brawn
- HelloNavi, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1My characters tend to be as much like myself as the game will permit. If I can't get anything really close to what I look like, I usually just make them look as silly as possible.
- Blacksoth, on 09/29/2008, -1/+0That's funny. I usually exaggerate my characters to be as different as possible. My horde main is a Tauren male with a broken horn (looks like an animal more than it does a human male), while my alliance main is a female BLACK skinned (or as close as the coloring will allow) female paladin (despite being male and white).
- spyd3rweb, on 09/29/2008, -0/+10Usually in games with a 3rd person view all you see is the ass, and who wouldn't want to stare at a hot chicks ass while you're playing.
- Lythium, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2- straight women
- gay men
Other questions?
- Lythium, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2- straight women
- VinnieDaMac, on 09/29/2008, -0/+5I play male characters in MMO's because I don't like getting hit on by other guys. I also try to recreate myself too. On all other types of game, it doesn't matter to me.
- D14BL0, on 09/29/2008, -6/+3Does WoW have a slider bar to adjust the level of Cheetos dust on your character's fingers?
- mizarone, on 09/29/2008, -0/+11That's in the World of World of Warcraft game.
- D14BL0, on 09/29/2008, -6/+3Does WoW have a slider bar to adjust the level of Cheetos dust on your character's fingers?
- W00DR0W, on 09/29/2008, -1/+4I hear that, "I'd rather play a video game as a woman because then I get my rocks off while I play!" argument, it's still awkward when someone sees you playing as a chick though.
And I prefer to make a character that looks like myself or a characature anyways, played an Evil Picard in Mass Effect.- KMartSheriff, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Amen. "I'd rather stare at a chicks ass"? Is that your guy's only reason?
- pagno, on 09/29/2008, -1/+2To me, it made sense to play a warlock as a female in WoW. Especially with that witches hat!
- Syphon8, on 09/29/2008, -3/+2The only game where I always choose a female is Guitar Hero.
- Elderon, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2I choose my character to be like myself so I play male characters. Am I gay for doing so? I think not. staring at a cartoon ass ( a la night elf wow) is not a turn on for me. If I want to see hot ass I'll open up some porn.
- warrenterr, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1thank you. But I think you should have real girls before porn on your list, imo.
- Lunarbunny, on 09/29/2008, -0/+13Usually in RPGs (MMO or not) I make my first character the 'token male' then end up making females for the rest of my characters. I agree with the 'which ass would I rather be staring at' argument personally.
- Abomonog, on 09/29/2008, -1/+2Since I play mostly FPS games it doesn't really matter.
- chrgrose, on 09/29/2008, -0/+5in Unreal Tournament 2004, I'm always a chick... a robot chick...
you know, for that extra zing with my kinky.- Crucible1001, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Well, in UT games I always go with female characters because they are smaller targets.
- passedoutghost, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Well I just download custom characters which make me a smaller target.
- Abomonog, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1I used to run around in Q3A using the killer naked girl model that was produced for it and I did a female for Oblivion because some of the missions change if you do. But for me the question is "do I like the skin?", over "what sex is it?",.
- chrgrose, on 09/29/2008, -0/+5in Unreal Tournament 2004, I'm always a chick... a robot chick...
- Lavarock, on 09/29/2008, -1/+1And dead.
- themusicalduck, on 09/29/2008, -0/+11It's always funny when some 13 year-old kid starts trying to flirt with my female undead on WoW.
- pagno, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Female undead are hot!
- MuffinFlavored, on 09/29/2008, -2/+109Many

- PakoBedejo, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4Actually...in 4 years of WoW, I've only encountered about half a dozen people who actually Role Played...It's like saying everyone who played Tomb Raider was role playing as Lara Croft.
- ParanoydAndroid, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2I think you're lying, because If you actually played WoW for any length of time, then you would know that there's tons of RP-ers on there. They have their own servers however (RP, RPPvP), and so you don't mix with them unless you want to (and I don't honestly know any long time players who didn't make at least one alt on an RP server to check i out)
- DrNafork, on 09/29/2008, -1/+3There is a lot of Girls role playing Men. They just don't want to met :
Ch4d0W As4S1n :"OMGZ !!!!!1!!1 GiRlz !!!1!11 B00Bz !!!!11"
- ferrell, on 09/29/2008, -1/+27I always liked to play as Voldo.
I'm not sure what that says about me.- Demener, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1I couldn't play as Voldo until I unlocked the Entire Kos-Mos outfit and assigned it to him in SC3... Then I learned him errr her fairly well. >.>
- Hanny26, on 09/29/2008, -1/+5I played male Undeads in WoW. I've been playing a male Chaos in Warhammer. I dunno why, I've just always though that guys playing female characters in games is a bit odd. To each his own though I suppose.
- InfernoX, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2Depends on the game.
In an RPG I usually playthrough the first time as a male and then most of my subsequent playthroughs are as a female. Reason being that the first time I usually make some horrible mess of a character and I don't want to invest a lot of time into their appearance when I have to remake them once I realize that my skills are a jumbled mess. - tyler71, on 09/29/2008, -0/+8Dugg for Diablo II Amazon
- passedoutghost, on 09/29/2008, -2/+5I'm a guy and therefore I'll play as a guy. It seems to me that people who have female characters and also adopt feminine monikers like "Sweet Chick 86" might have some gender issues. Also I don't get off on fake computer generated boobies, no matter how much I crank up the resolution, anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering. Plus what's the point of ooglying at a low polygon "mesh"?
- PakoBedejo, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3I agree with you. I play WoW with female avatars of the races whose male counterparts are 1/2-screen wide (i.e. Tauren, Draenei) and I refuse to play as Zoolander, so Blood Elf as well. However, I give them masculine names (Paco). So, if someone thinks that Pacowarrior is a chick, they have some issues.
- diggdiggerid, on 09/29/2008, -2/+5I usually play as a guy because I can't masturbate to polygons and also I don't usually play "kitchen simulator 3"
- CrushThemTorg, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3The level where you have a lot of babies and are subtly abused by society and your spouse is ***** awesome.
- OMGNinjas, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Where'd that artwork of the female Witch Doctor come from? Never seen that before.
- Blacksoth, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Witch Doctor is a new class in Diablo 3.
- gingerbreadcat, on 09/29/2008, -2/+5This article explains why young, testosterone-poisoned, insecure males justify playing a girl. It hardly answers the question in the title.
- tacomafia, on 09/29/2008, -12/+4I play a male. Everyone knows that only gay people and chicks choose female avatars.
My avatar is an extension of myself. If you choose to associate yourself as a female, you shall be treated as such.- tacomafia, on 09/29/2008, -4/+3The people who digg me down are the people I'm talking about.
Butthurt. - luken355, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4I LOL'd!
seriously, a little homophobic? don't catch teh ghey! - TrevorBelmont, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4How do you get internet service in your cave?
- tacomafia, on 09/29/2008, -4/+3The people who digg me down are the people I'm talking about.
- Knowitallism, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Dugg for being a D2 SS
- chrgrose, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2I gravitate toward the chicks, but before that I care more about special abilities. For instance, I still play diablo 2 and sorceress is my favorite char simply because her skills are cool. However I also like being a bone necromancer because those skill casts are awesome, even though it doesn't do much damage. On the other hand, to me the Assassin is boring and i'm just not into the Amazon right now, even though she looks like she wants to rape me with her rocking *****. Unfortunately I am mainly using a Hammerdin Paladin which is a godlike class but to me is far more boring than a sorc or a necro.
I'm still hoping blizzard keeps the sorc and necro. I'll take either, please. The witchdoctor looks cool, but I'm honestly just not into crazy voodoo magic *****. Its kind of like a druid, except with a hunch, bad teeth, and jibberish language. I want to throw lightning bolts, fireballs, and frozen spikes around. - bronzelining, on 09/29/2008, -0/+4It depends. In soul caliber, I'll pick yoshimitsu before ivy, because i want to kill the opponent, not entice them to make boob/watermelon jokes. If it's halo, i'll pick female, just because the voice is so much better than the male voice. If it's WOW, i pick female, because i don't really think any of the males should look like they do. If it's harvest moon, i pick female, because the game seems a whole lot more fun when the boys compliment you, rather than playing as the male, where both the males and the females just tell you to go water the blasted bush. If it's sonic, i'll play as the male characters just because it's sonic. In Mercs 2, i'll always be the male character, simply because i don't picture females with explosives.
- Fabbyfubz, on 09/29/2008, -4/+2I choose male characters because I don't want other people to think that I can't drive and that I have no logic skills.
- FFXIfrohike, on 09/29/2008, -4/+2Buried for "Boobs or Brawn"
- lofispy, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1It all depends on the game for me, whichever one is going to help me further ingratiate myself into the game, and let's me play from the inside the characters head so to speak is the one I'm going to go for.
- MikeWanDo, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2I think it's hilarious how the submitter changed the title to boobs or brawn from beauty or brawn. Obviously boobs = diggs.
- X9001, on 09/29/2008, -0/+11You get free ***** from people who think your a chick when you play as one
- gdonald, on 09/29/2008, -1/+3Female characters are much nicer to look at and have a higher resale value on Ebay when you switch to a new game. For example I got $400 for a hot blonde level 50 Dark Age of Camelot buff bot once.
- mannyfreshh, on 09/29/2008, -4/+1"Still, you can never be too careful, as these guys are the gaming world’s “masters of disguise”. Next time you meet a female character that actually claims to be a girl in real life, don’t be so quick to jump on the “cyber??!” band-wagon. Chances are: her sword is bigger then yours."
- MindTrigger, on 09/29/2008, -2/+5I *always* choose male characters, since I am one. I've never understood why any man or boy would be excited about playing a female character, picking out her dresses, and other women's clothes with such excitement. Seems like some people need therapy, or to come out of the closet.
I also don't understand how men can stand the way other men react to female characters in games. Guys go absolutely ape-***** and suspend all reality to picture you as a hot gamergirl, sitting at home on your PC in your underwear. If that's not scary enough to keep men from playing female avatars, I don't know what it would take.- TrevorBelmont, on 09/29/2008, -3/+8Yeah, nothing beats watching your male avatar run and jump, his muscles subtly tensing under the weight of his sword, the lone bead of sweat rolling down the small of his back, seeing him thrust his sword into the bellies of armies of lesser men...
Yeah those dudes who play as chicks must be gay.- MindTrigger, on 09/29/2008, -3/+5If you are paying that much attention to what your ***** *GAME* character looks like in the game, you are a freak. I see my avatar as an extension of myself into the game world, therefor I am not staring at my own digital ass. You sound like a good candidate for that therapy I mentioned above. :)

article doesn't explain anything besides poor observations made by one person from a small sampling of guys/games. It doesn't even mention the existence of female gamers. It references story based games with real characters (MGS, Devil May Cry, Tomb Raider, etc) but your choosing to play Lara, is different than choosing to play a female orc.
It also references Diablo 2 a lot, in which, you probably choose your character because of the class you want to play, not who you identify with or want to stare at. I spent most of my time playing a sorceress, because she had the best MF gear (pre 1.09, i didn't play after that), but would have honestly rather had been a necromancer (too bad they're awful).
This might actually make an interesting study, if somebody took it seriously, and didn't just write it to get more blog hits.- havocjaw, on 09/29/2008, -0/+1Agreed
This article doesn't have any evidence to back anything that's being stated. It's just his opinion, which doesn't lead to any valuable conclusion.

- BellaVitaGirl, on 09/29/2008, -0/+8I'm a girl and when I pick a character I think of it as an extension of myself, so I don't ever play as a guy. Besides, most of the guy characters in WoW are ugly (or Horde chars in general--why else do you think they created blood elves)? I want something pleasant to look at if I'm spending time in a game. Although I must add it's not the boobs or any part of the body that are fun to look at -- I like looking at the dresses etc. and seeing a girl kick butt in a VERY male-dominated game.
- da233, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3Don't lie, we know you're staring at the boobies.
- luken355, on 09/29/2008, -4/+0HORDE pwns Alliance, so whatever you said is moot
/played pre-burning crusade
//orcs, trolls, and undead FTW
///really, why play warcraft to be a human, or a short beer swilling beard?
////gnomes are cool - Magnus150, on 09/29/2008, -0/+2Orc chicks turn me on.
- InsaneOni, on 09/29/2008, -0/+3I've noticed that girls tend to be more likely to play their own gender. Every actual female player that was in my Alliance in EvE Online was a female character. Then there were scores of guys that just had female characters.
- Blacksoth, on 09/29/2008, -1/+0I've played WoW for quite some time in the top 1% of raiding guilds and I can say with absolute certainty, women are very well represented among serious gamers even if their representation falls short overall (you sound like a casual gamer if your focus is dresses).
Btw, not all of us want to play a character because it's pretty. I proudly play Horde knowing that I don't have to deal with the whiny kids who all roll NE rogues and hunters (now, sadly, playing BE rogues and hunters). You're not cool, get over it. - BellaVitaGirl, on 09/29/2008, -0/+0I'm a fairly casual gamer. I get bored playing with one single character so I tend to make a new one every so often. I do have Horde characters (including Tauren and Trolls), but a lot of the times the levels and things (undead lol) are just too depressing for me to hang out in. It's a personal choice. Since I don't have a high level character, I tend to be stuck with males a lot of the time because the percentage of people that make it to level 70 is going to be pretty equal gender-wise (I imagine). However, I have about 20 characters, none about level 30, so I'm going to go with whatever fits my mood and aesthetic eye without caring what twink I can make, etc., because it's only a game and if I'm playing it for fun I don't want to be depressed while doing it, although I know I'm going to run into a lot of casual gamers (who are mostly male in MMORGS).
Oh, and yeah, the whiny people are on Horde side too (esp. lower levels). I tend to prefer my Alliance server because the people there have been nicer to me and my characters/levels are more fun to look at (and higher level subsequently).
Actually, maybe it's not the aesthetic...maybe it's just that my first Horde character was a troll and Barrens chat killed me.
