- oorizwan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7As long as everyone else can have games where they can blow the crap up out of American neighborhoods, cities and buildings, I don`t see the problem with this game as a work of fiction. Hell, I would love to "blow up anything I see" in just about any country....oh wait -- yeah, I can see why this is offensive now.
What I hate about these types of games is the double standards. Its all well and good when you are infiltrating another country as an eilite CT operative, but if a game similar to Mercenaries 2 came out and was set in the US, it would be hailed as a terrorist training tool (or whatever crap the US media spouts these days). Ah well, whatever fits in your jaundiced world view.... - eMpi, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8And perhaps you should worry about .. well, whatever you worry about. And let everybody else worry about what people worries about.
Basically you're saying you hate people having an opinion on something. Something they don't have a college degree in. Even though you yourself just expressed an opinion. Bono is a symbol for millions of peoples opinion on the poverty/Africa subject. I don't favour elitism... - spyrochaete, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8“It sends a message to Americans, ‘You have a danger next door, here in Latin America, and action must be taken’
This game really should be banned. It is poison for the mind of our vulnerable parents. American parents are very suggestable and take the mass media very seriously. They could grow up to become warmongering politicians who fear minorities at home and abroad.
I highly recommend writing the ESRB to recommend this title be rated CO - Children Only. Only a gamer with the intelligence of a child can see that video games are purely fantasy. If you insist on exposing your parents to such content, be sure to play the game with them and explain that the people portrayed on the television, much like cartoons, are not real people. - Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -10/+15Why is it that power-hungry tyrants can never understand the concept of a free market? Pandemic Studios is an independent company, and they make whatever games they damn well please.
I advise Chavez to grow up and stop hallucinating about U.S.-based conspiracies (which I noticed the article repeats without disclaimer, by the way). I also advise anyone getting hyper over this upcoming game to get a life. - astrotrain, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Maybe if we included Bono ans U2 as a 'Master Boss' to destroy he would be more happier.
** bono moving mouth like bad chinese movie **
"All your base are belong to U2..." - jbus, on 10/12/2007, -6/+10Nothing to worry about people, I'm sure this is just military contracted pre-training for the kids that will eventually enlist to help invade Venezuela in a few years... err months.
- Rayonic, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4@ oorizwan :
I seem to be able to cause a lot of crime and havoc and death and in the Grand Theft Auto games. Those are based in the United States.
And how many games have taken place in a post-apocalyptic America? Too many to count. Also consider the games where the U.S. breaks up into several smaller nations (Crimson Skies, etc.) - TonySki, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5OK, it's a video game. Why the ***** can't other governments notice that? if there was a book or movie about it, they have no problem, but once it's a video game they all have to get all up in arms calling that they get their country removed from the game or the game banned all together.
I remember a few years back that Pakistan or some other middle eastern country didn't want their country in SOCOM 3 because it showed that they supported terrorism. bunch of ***** with their heads up their asses so far they see light. - IHaveIssues, on 10/12/2007, -4/+6They should make a video game where we shoot, rape, stab little americans boys and girls. Haha, they would be fun and it's just a game!
- raindog469, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Just like the last time this game came up, I see no lack of consistency on Bono's part, nor do I see how he's been "drawn into" this other than by activists looking for a promotional angle, and the press invoking his name to make it a story.
Bono's pet cause is Africa. Period. End of story. Venezuela is not in Africa and therefore not Bono's problem. I donate money to the EFF, various AIDS charities and other liberal causes, but wouldn't have any trouble owning stock in a company who made a game that made fun of something other liberal people like, such as PETA. (Imagine a game where you have to liberate animals from PETA's shelters before PETA puts them to sleep, for example - an arguably more realistic scenario than this Venezuela game depicts since PETA really does kill thousands of animals every year.)
If Bono actually divests himself of this company and puts out an apologetic statement, he's no longer a philanthropist, he's just a politician. - oorizwan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@rayonic
World of difference between a game like GTA which is a glorified crime movie (albeit more open ended and free form) and Mercenaries - which involves deploying military hardware in a much more realistic (if just as fantasy-laced) setting than GTA. Also, GTA has received so much flak for its setting, that Rockstar is regretting its cowboy attitude quite a lot at the moment. Consider that Venezuela may have a problem with involuntary portrayal of itself by a US game company. If the company wants to make games about blowing ithe US up - all well and good. More consideration for others is always necessary in an increasaingly tight-knit world. - jerrygofixit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1STFU BONO!!!!!! NO MORE TALKING FOR YOU!!!!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -3/+3youre hilarious. thank you sir for that comment. it has put a rainbow, on an otherwise dreary day.
good day sir. - darkcaps, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0I think thats great
- modiggs1976, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2See, what's great about this is it's Bono. After all those years of Bono being this self-righteous, pious rock star, he gets activists screaming at him. I love it.
- Redtide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Bono is a *****
- spurtle, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0"OK, it's a video game. Why the ***** can't other governments notice that?"
Because that's what kids are into these days and don't want these peaceniks brainwashing them. - becominglumberg, on 10/12/2007, -6/+3I never said Bono can't have an opinion. Just don't propose a solution unless you understand how it works.
Case and point: I don't think NASA develops space shuttles very well right now. I am very much for shuttle reform. I am, however, not a rocket scientist, and would never submit a plan for an overhaul. - tuna1, on 10/12/2007, -9/+6**Stuggling to avoid making tin foil hat comment**
- DannoHung, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1I wonder why North Korea wasn't complaining about the first Mercenaries game?
- Grimdotdotdot, on 10/12/2007, -8/+3"Called Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, it is made by Pandemic Studios, based in Los Angeles, in which a private equity firm established by the U2 lead singer has invested $300m (£165m)."
Why the hell does Bono want to invest money in Los Angeles? - tuna1, on 10/12/2007, -11/+4Why the hell would would he want to invest money in London?
- mrussell, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1Am I being stupid? This article doesn't actually explain how Bono's involved...
"Bono has been unwittingly caught up in a row..."
"A spokesperson for Bono failed to return calls..."
Interesting story, but they could have used anyone's name without bothering to justify it. - mrussell, on 10/12/2007, -8/+1OK I am stupid, destroy me please
- becominglumberg, on 10/12/2007, -11/+3I hate when artist like Bono decide that they are qualified political scientists/ economists/ etc. I do respect that he is one of the few artists that puts his money where his mouth is, but his African debt relief policy is bunk. African countries need a lot of help, but if we forgive all of their (mostly privately owned) debt, the withdrawal of future investments in the countries would be much more detrimental than the oppressive debt they are currently in.
Case and point, rock stars should worry about their hair, and let economists worry about economies, and political scientists worry about politics.
