- AmishRefugee, on 10/12/2007, -12/+23does that include the 1 million+ blu-rays of Talledega Nights that came with PS3s?
- imsoclever, on 10/12/2007, -0/+11You realize both could fail.
- klawz, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9With all the DRM ***** necessary, I sure hope so.
- ZennZero, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9It is happening due to studio support (or rather lack thereof):

While I am hoping this is just a temporary drought of HD DVD titles, a drought at this stage is all it takes to kill the format. Oh well, at least the Xbox360 HDDVD player only cost me $160. - JayD16, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8Whats wrong with adding BR-R numbers?
- theragu40, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Lower cost doesn't necessarily mean success. Gamecube anyone? Porn availability, however, is a much better argument.
- JayD16, on 10/12/2007, -5/+7It was the first 500k...
- g3r4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I hope that Sony, even should Blu-Ray fail as a movie medium, keeps using Blu-Ray within the PS3 (No revision models with HD-DVD). For the console, it was a strong choice as it allows developers more storage space than even HD-DVD currently. As soon as that turns around, and the HD-DVD can suddenly hold 50GB, I'm all for the it and its higher data transfer rates.
- Phocion55, on 10/12/2007, -8/+10Seeing how the PS3 is just a vehicle used by Sony to whore out Blu-Ray to the masses, can't say I'm too shocked.
- Itazura, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3"Between January 7 and 14"
No it does not include those. - rysar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Universal is releasing something like 100 more HD-DVDs this year.... including the Harry Potter series on HD.... we'll see how that affects sales.
- theragu40, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Also, you have to consider that this is coming from a site that has 'PS3' right in their domain name. It's a Playstation site. Now, I'm not saying their numbers are wrong, but it's not altogether unlikely that they "accidentally" may have included PS3 games and all the Talladega Nights disks in with those figures to give the Blu-ray numbers a boost.
- sundancekid503, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3When they say 2:1 that's not just the ratio, that's the actual sales volume.
- matth1jd, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2This could be because I've seen several Blu-Ray displays in stores, that is a Blu-Ray player attached to a very nice television playing Blu-Ray demo content, or a Blu-Ray movie. I have seen ZERO HD-DVD demo displays. Sheer exposure has probably helped Blu-Ray. (edit: digid beat me)
- infimprob, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2So much for the Betamax and VHS model
- LACHRYMIST, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Screw both of 'em - HDDVD and Bluray.
Long live regular-ass DVD. - Dhalsim007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Damn....I knew PS3 was good for SOMETHING! I'm still pushing for the dual-format discs, so we can stop this counter-productive turf war.
- rysar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The HD-DVD/Blu-Ray battle will probably rage for another year, at least until the VHS sales finally peter out completely. The driving factor for HD/Blu content now is HDTV sales. As people get on board with the new formats, these sales figures are still minor compared to the total percentage of DVD sales... in another year, that will be another holiday season to push these new technologies to consumers and begin really educating the people about the formats.
Ultimately though, Joe Consumer will pick whatever the sales droid at Best Buy pushes. In this case, its Blu-Ray everywhere. Education will drive sales, which will end up driving the studios to release their titles on these formats. - digid, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Blu-ray's marketing campaign is by far superior. I just went into my local compusa and every endcap had some blu-ray discs hanging down the side and a sony section with all kinds of blu-ray posters. A lot of DVDs I've unwrapped recently have a little slip inside with a Blu-ray advert. I have basically seen no HD-DVD advertisement. From time to time I've seen an HD-DVD horizontal banner on digg but then again there was a blu-ray vertical banner on the same page to the side.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2QJ.net is one of the biggest spammers and content stealing POS blogs I've ever had the displeasure of encountering. ***** OFF QJ.
- Junkyarddawg, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1The report is based on HD-DVD and Blu-ray sales in the first two weeks of January alone, and concludes that PS3 will land blu-ray the victory in the format war.
You can read the source article here:
http://www.nxtbook.com/nxtbooks/questex/hmr012807/index.php
It's a really annoying magazine layout thing, so it takes ages to load, and you'll have to flick to page 8 to find the story.
In brief, the article reports that HD-DVD still leads somewhat, but in the first two weeks of january blu-ray outsold hd-dvd by 6 to 4, and the article cites analysts who think this is due to xmas present PS3's.
The same analysts think that blu-ray will win the console wars largely because of the PS3.
This analyst thinks those analysts are right about the blu-ray sales being due to xmas PS3's, but that they are overestimating the effect of the PS3. - UnnDunn, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Two things are going to save HD DVD:
1. Lower cost always wins out. By the end of this year we're going to start seeing HD DVD players hit $200 with a movie library robust enough to make it worth it, while BD players will still be over $500. We're also going to be seeing the big PC people adding HD DVD drives to mass-market PCs, whereas Blu-ray will still be in the mid-range.
2. Porn. 'nuff said, really. Especially with the better interactive features of HD DVD. - seandfeeney, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1wasn't this on the home page the other day and it said 3:1?
Burried as dup. - MouseCircus, on 10/12/2007, -12/+12It is for pathetic PS3 fanboys who are looking for some good news. Which is evident from the fact that it's an article on ps3.qj.net.
Yet again, I'm being slightly sarcastic. - munkyxtc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Someday when I can afford to park my Ferrari in my castle I'll care about buying blu-ray...for now I'm content with my sub $200 HD DVD Player for the 360. Eventually early adopters will turn into adopters and one will be accepted by the general population; lets see how $899 blu-ray players stand up against $450 standalone HD DVD players. Hell; the arguement is stupid; both provide superior video compared to DVD on the right setup -- for me it's all about price, and that's where HD DVD won me over.
- DaveBG, on 10/12/2007, -7/+6Those are the last days of hd dvd...
- Rianousuke, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1 Yeah, and remember how well UMD Movies sold for like 4 months? Look at them now. Same *****. HD DVD has better color and sharpness and lower production costs and is open, as opposed to the nannied BR format.
Eat *****, Sony. - vancanucksfan, on 10/12/2007, -5/+1oops,duplicate post. bury
- majordannyboy, on 10/12/2007, -6/+1do these sales include porn??? Because you can't buy porn on blu-ray on HD DVD.
- CapAmerica, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4Are they also include PS3 games and Blu-Ray-R?
All they refer to is discs, not Blu-Ray/HD-DVD movies.
I question this a bit. For all we know HD-DVD could be winning in the Movie market, but with the additions of -R and PS3 games its going to make Blu-Ray look stronger. - syl1985, on 10/12/2007, -10/+4This isn't gaming news, in any way/shape/form
- Thorlord, on 10/12/2007, -12/+6wow. raised 7% margin over the course of 7 days.
its still behind HD-DvD so marked as innaccurate. - vancanucksfan, on 10/12/2007, -10/+3Blu-ray is kicking ass on amazon. Check it
