- SoulMaster2, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16Isn't Starcraft the national sport of Korea?
- merreborn, on 10/12/2007, -0/+16It's supposed to be like reading a magazine. I think it accomplishes that goal, although the goal itself is questionable.
Trying to make new technology (web) mimic old technology (magazines) is kinda silly, some times. - ryllharu, on 10/12/2007, -6/+22Sites like these, are far and away, the worst format imaginable.
At least it was a mildly interesting read. - Durrok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+13This should help:
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/print/48/3 - Chompy, on 10/12/2007, -1/+11They've gained power for fairly simple reasons; I dunno why it's so hard for so many other companies to comprehend this.
1. They don't release buggy ***** with the now-industry-standard "we'll just patch it later" attitude.
2. Quality. Everything they put out is richly imagined and polished. When a project doesn't meet these standards, they simply don't release it.
3. Love. These guys love their work, and it shows in everything they do. While the EAs of the world are busy pumping out another soulless Madden 200X, these guys are designing rich background stories and lore to go with their games.
The EAs of the world can't do this because they simply don't understand creative people. They're soulless factories, and it shows in their products. - zirtbow, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9They also don't go all out with the gfx to sell eyecandy. Their stuff seems to run on a ton of older stuff around (although there is probably someone out there with a AMD K6 or something.). Just by keeping the reqirements low they seem to reach a pretty big audiance... kind of like what google does.
- ilnyckyj, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9beautiful only if your browser is using the default text size...i have to turn up the minimum text size because I've got a 15-inch laptop with a native resolution of 1600x1200. The content may have been interesting, but I'll never know because the formatting made it unreadable for me.
- karch, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9:/ I thought after the first page, the type, spacing, balance, and color were beautiful.
- Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8It's considered a sport in South Korea. The competitors appear on television commercials and battle in public competitions.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47GLuOd3QVk - Gigabutt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8is it just me or do they skip over Starcraft's success and only focus on Blizz's current cash cow series; Warcraft?
- Tricky, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Yeah, and these people are INSANE. Actions per minute can get up to and over 500. Insane finger skillz.
- Ryuuzaki, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Blizzard lost my respect when they attacked bnetd http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bnetd and freecraft http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freecraft , two free software projects, written from scratch.
Enemies of free software, lawsuit terrorists, screw them. - Kiel, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5the escapist is designed to be an online magazine, mainly available in pdf, but with an html format available. I get the pdf regularly and enjoy that alot more.
- rizon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Yeah, they skipped Starcraft.
Starcraft > Warcraft
On a side note, I got kicked out of a channel on Battle.net by a Blizzard rep because I was talking about this, and it was on Slashdot too :-( - FreakTrap, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6I think it's a pretty original design, and don't find it too hard to read; however, if you still don't like it, look at the bottom of the screen, and try pressing the buttons labeled 'Text' and 'PDF.'
- FreakTrap, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6While the title of the story makes you not want to read it, the story is actually worth reading.
- cohortq, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4SC players are celebrities AND date movie stars? What is this utopian society you speak of.
- matthall28, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9ah this site is really hard to use/read.... god dam
- relinquish, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4The title has the word "revealed" in it. Digg++
- badch0w, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Nope, I've been there three times now... it's that big, trust me ;)
- mailedbypostman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3What happened Starcraft! KHAAAN!
- Cheeseness, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Not to dis Blizzard at all, but a lot of their stuff is clearly Warhammer inspired, so they were able to (with Warcraft and Starcraft) draw on an already established comsumer base of strategy geeks.
I believe that this went a long way to getting their foot (in addition to any other sub waist appendages) in and through the door. That they've managed to stay on top is a testament to how good they are as developers and a company. - Sequence, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Very interesting read!
+Digg - PhatBoyG, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Raking in $75 million a month, you would think they could update content more often. But I gotta give kudos to their enhancements to the genre, saved instances with weekly reset, massive player base, reasonable quality (compared to SoError), huge cash flow. And everything to date has been a zero cost update. Can't say that with EQ2 ($50), two adventure packs($5, $7), two expansions ($30, $30), another adventure pack ($8) and another expansion in the fall ($40). If I didn't have a 70 on Kithicor, I'd consider WoW purely for the social aspect of it -- everyone at work plays on the same server.
- voodooatl, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I want to know more about World of Starcraft
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Blizzard kicks a$$, IMO. I still play Diablo LOD to this day and it's as entertaining as ever. May have tried to copy Blizz games but few succeed. Dugg.
- raykart, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3I like ready Escapist. Really great online mag, always a good read.
- sw96, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Yeah, bcuz, u know, is _REALLY EASY_ to churn out one of those "great addicting game" ... Yep, nothing to it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2...That is awesome. I'm moving to korea...
- doomgoat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2True, so true. Blizzard games had immersive and rich stories, some (most) of which i couldnt even catch up with. Blizzard has been dissapointing with the lack of starcraft though. Blizzard multiplayer is also excellent, almost never have problems. But EA's hundreds of half assed games (Command and Conquer Generals) have such horrible multiplayer...
- blacklilyninja, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not sure if i missed it but there was no mention of SC or SC-ghost. I am a WoW-aholic. was a diablo-holic (1&2). Played all 3 WC games to death. Starcraft was my obsesion. Waited for the now on-the-shelf Ghost. I actually bought my x-box for that game nearly 3 years ago. Now I have to wait.... again. It was the only game for the mac in the early days.
Blizzard. Thank you for ruining my life and making me very very poor. My child is considering suing you for stealing his mom away. He said it was legal peer pressure but it made sense. - matthall28, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3thank you so much...
- bugsy187, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Don't you guys think you're overreacting? Aside from the first page and the navigation, the design is quite nice. They type and image treatment forms good composition. The type hardly burns your eyes since it's white type on black and emitting less light than a white page.
Are you guys simply rejecting a design that is somewhat new and unfamiliar? - futoshi, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2What the hell?
They totally glossed over Warcraft 2 which was far more successful than War1 and what really made Blizzrard big.
Did they even talk about Starcraft or War3? - Jack9, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3In addition to the article being factually inaccurate multiple times (the Escapist must be the new Omni), the article doesn't say anything about why Blizzard is successful. No digg for contributing to stupidity.
- twylight, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ric Romero here reporting live on the interweb. Blizzard is a big company with clout. See my expose at 10.
- uymai, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2this site made my eyes bleed
- Splitt3rxx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1heres how:they made a great addicting game
not much else to say rly. - otatop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1My dad still has an AMD K6. The saddest part is, I remember he upgraded to the K6 to play the original Delta Force way back when. Starcraft still plays like a breeze on that computer.
- tehvsx, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Those are some secrets. I was expecting to read about Diablo III or something interesting, instead it was just a bunch of stuff that doesn't really matter to me :(
(Maybe I should have read the description better :P)
It's also extremely fun to read .00001px size font. - SirNuke, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They did. Starcraft's success is what made Blizzard Blizzard. Kind of interesting to think about how if Westwood put the 115% into C&C Red Alert like Blizzard did to Starcraft, Westwood may have become what Blizzard is today.
Except that Westwood would probably still be developing C&C games rather than putting their cash cow and fans' hopes to rest. What never ceases to amaze me is how little respect or dedication Blizzard shows to their fans. Never mind the whole 'destroyer of childhood dreams for not making any more Starcraft games", I still can't figure out how they justified suing the makers of bnetd and Freecraft. - kenok, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Then download and read the PDF file instead.
- danbruno, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Yeah, but he alluded to Robert Johnson over and over again. Surely, that must be worth something.
- bugsy187, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2The graphic design (except for the first page) is a refreshing break from all of the web 2.0 sites out there right now. Type and image are well integrated. If I see one more "clean" site with link clouds, I'm gonna gag. (no offense digg.)
- dbxz, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2when i read the title i was like YES diablo 3 info! but then it wasnt :(
- DROB003, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1@ilnyckyj
Spot on - Flankk, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Terran Marine: (taking a beer out of the container for a nuclear bomb) Thank god for cold fusion!
- Telemako, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Their article focuses on World of Warcraft previous steps, so they consider Warcraft + Diablo the recipe for this later success, that's why they don't talk about Starcraft.
Nice reading but being a starcraft fan I was waiting it's appearance and got a bit dissapointed when found out the little importance they gave to it =( - raingrove, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0http://youtube.com/watch?v=3CbFNtQflqw&search=
- RexyRex, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0I enjoyed Starcraft much more than any other Blizzard game. The article was alright, but to be honest I only read the first two pages and skimmed the rest.
