- Rev0lver, on 10/11/2008, -8/+77Just don't gimp the PC version and I'm a-ok with it. But seriously...Diablo on a gampad? *shudders*
- Lionhart, on 10/11/2008, -5/+50Well that would be really weird, but at least I wouldn't have to hear the endless clicky clicky clicky when my roomates play.
- Infidelcastr0, on 10/11/2008, -8/+52Sounds great as long as they don't abandon the PC.
- Sherman901, on 10/12/2008, -1/+34yeah, too bad that was taken care of by EA, not Valve.
- seavers, on 10/12/2008, -1/+25"Of all our games, Diablo III would be the one to port because of the way it plays, but there are no plans to move this to any other platform"
- TheResistless, on 10/12/2008, -0/+24I'm looking at you Epic.
- spaceman84, on 10/12/2008, -6/+28Lol. NO. Maybe on the PS3 where you can hook up a keyboard and mouse, but there is no way in hell that you could effectively play WoW with a regular console controller.
- LordStandley, on 10/12/2008, -4/+21Nope, just his frustrated curse filled screaming about how they ***** up the translation of the controls to the consoles.
- webergolf, on 10/12/2008, -1/+17and it had a lot of issues on the PS3.....
- Godmil, on 10/12/2008, -2/+17PS3 has keyboard/mouse support (it was a viable option for UT3)
- GoKings, on 10/12/2008, -5/+19I really hope not... Remember Diablo on Playstation? Wow the game didn't even come close in comparison. Blizzard makes great computer games, not console games.
- LMN8R, on 10/12/2008, -2/+16Do some research and you'll realize that most of those "no trouble" PS3 ports involve teams many many times larger than the 360 teams. It's a requirement to take advantage of the PS3's ass-backwards proprietary esoteric hardware that was never designed with games in mind.
For *****'s sake, some developers devote 150+ to single PS3 games while 150 people is what Valve has in total - spread across TF2, Left 4 Dead, Episode 3, god knows what else, and Steam and customer support as well. - freebird4, on 10/12/2008, -3/+17If it does, it'll prob only come to the 360. Porting a PC game to Xbox architecture is almost as easy as just recompiling the code. That's why Valve only ports to Xbox in-house.
- LordVance, on 10/12/2008, -0/+13Actions Per Minute has absolutely nothing to do with whether keyboard/mouse would be better or not. Keyboard/Mouse is better if for no reason other than the fact that all of the game systems are designed around the mouse being an integral part of the user interface (hit: the user interface is a much larger system than simply the GUI).
Inventory Management is a huge part of the Diablo Series, and I'm not talking about the tetris mini-game, I'm talking about things as simple as picking up the one item you want when there are 50 in close proximity to you.
Other than inventory management, think about class skills - and this ones huge. Diablo isn't played by pointing your character in the correct direction and hitting a skill - many (most?) of the skills are location based; the difference between casting Multi-Shot with your mouse 10 feet in front of your character, and 40 feet in front of your character is huge. Pin-point control over spell casting is integral to Diablo; you don't teleport "X" units in front of your character, you teleport to a specific location on the screen.
It's not just teleport and multi-shot, it's nearly everything. Most cone attacks base the size of the cone on the location of your mouse pointer, many attacks for even "melee" classes are specific-location based.
Sure, all of this could be handled by using an analog stick as a quazi-mouse input, but it can't possibly be done with the smoothness and the speed (click a small rectangle in 5 random sections of your television with an analog stick in rapid succession - now imagine doing that all day, that's how the games played) possible with a mouse.
Mouse =/= Analog Stick
Mouse == The entire basis for the Diablo user interface.
At the end of the day, it could be done - and it wouldn't even be hard (as simple as using the analog stick to control "mouse" pointer location), but it wouldn't play nearly as good either. - iofthestorm, on 10/12/2008, -0/+12Well, UT3 was clearly consolized, which no doubt led to diminished PC sales. What the hell is up with the 10 foot interface on a PC? Not to mention the complete lack of graphics quality settings, especially when compared to UT2k4. When companies abandon the PC, they get what they deserve.
- crownedgriffin, on 10/12/2008, -1/+13My Dreamcast had a keyboard.
- Frozenfuryblade, on 10/12/2008, -2/+14Well, that's Square, and this is Blizzard. I'm more confident in Blizzard's ability to produce a quality game of any type, on any console. Plus if it sucks, then they won't release it.
- joeleslie, on 10/12/2008, -1/+12If they do end up porting it to PS3, they would probably almost certainly give it USB keyboard and mouse support.
- Fabbyfubz, on 10/12/2008, -2/+13TOO MANY ABILITIES; NOT ENOUGH BUTTONS
- latova, on 10/12/2008, -7/+18It'll still end up like most console games out there: better with keyboard and mouse.
- Schmapdi, on 10/12/2008, -1/+11Yeah - because Blizzard just hasn't found any way to be profitable on the PC.
... - jggube, on 10/12/2008, -3/+12If it does, I'll be stuck on the couch for a few months.
- gothsquirrel, on 10/12/2008, -1/+10They made the first Diablo for the ps1 and it wasn't bad.
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -0/+9So does Wii.
And probably 360, seeing as how it has USB ports. - LordVance, on 10/12/2008, -0/+8I think the concern is that if they put out a game that plays sub-par on the console it will diminish the value of the franchise. Personally, I'll be playing it on the PC and would hate to have to endure a Diablo on a console again; however, I think that Blizzards name is far beyond being tarnished by a sub-par port at this point. Worst case scenario - they don't win over the console crowd; they already have the PC crowd eating out of the palm of their hand in droves.
It's really a consideration of:
A) Would we be able to create a "Blizzard" quality release of Diablo III on a console? (the name Blizzard means quite a bit more today than it did when DIablo I was released on the PS)
and
B) Would it be cost effective? They aren't console developers, and their codebase most likely isn't written with portability really in mind - it would be a learning curve and a large time investment, but would it sell? The game certainly will play better on the PC, and everyone knows it - so is there a large enough player base that will only buy it if it comes out on a console to warrant the cost of porting? - jermm, on 10/11/2008, -0/+8FREE MONEY!! (well, cheap money)
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -0/+8+1 EXP
- thirty6chambers, on 10/12/2008, -0/+8have you ever played diablo?
- Areign, on 10/12/2008, -0/+7did you ever play diablo 2? all i can think of is my right hand on the mouse and my left hand sprawled over 15 or so hotkeys. how are you gona get those hotkeys without a keyboard. i guess you could bind the ***** out of it but that to me just wouldnt do.
- th3heretic, on 10/12/2008, -2/+9Sucks to be you.
- bocaJWho, on 10/12/2008, -3/+10There's no reason the console couldn't use a keyboard.
- Xaramoth, on 10/12/2008, -2/+9DO WANT
- allothersnsused, on 10/13/2008, -0/+7A, A, A, A, A, A, A, A, A, A.
- twigboy, on 10/12/2008, -0/+6starcraft was on n64 i believe
and one of my all time faves, the lost vikings was on snes! - Enasni1212, on 10/12/2008, -0/+6But Ghost didn't get released for ANY platform. How could you wish that on us?
HOW COULD YOU!? - staffell, on 10/12/2008, -4/+10Holy ***** this would be good news! I love the Diablo series, but I haven't upgraded my graphics card in years...and I would need to. Bring it to the PS3 and I'd be beaming.
- HamSandwich, on 10/12/2008, -0/+6But... if it's not a click-fest, it's just not Diablo.
- ninjan, on 10/12/2008, -0/+6My Atari 2600 or N64 are probably not the consoles in mind. :(
- JustinHopewell, on 10/13/2008, -0/+6Let's also not forget that UT3, a decent twitch-FPS on its own right, was a pretty vast disappointment when compared to UT2K4. What were they thinking when they dropped Assault mode... AGAIN?!
- nochilinopity, on 10/12/2008, -2/+7Why bother? Even my 6-year old laptop can run WoW
- tutfire, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5It was 15 years ago, but who's counting?
By that logic I could say that Nintendo sucks at making games for their console because the best game they made (arguably Super Mario Bros) came out in 1985. - staffell, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6where did you get that?
- Areign, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6i bought my comp 2 summers ago (1000$) and can play crysis warhead. what the ***** were you doing? adding a mb of ram each time around?
- nmanguy, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6Well, they are really dumbing down this third one with no health potions and less thinking, so I guess that it is 100% ready for console prime time.
- benitojuarez, on 10/12/2008, -4/+9Oh if they dumb this down for consoles like they (they being ion storm/eidos) did deus ex 2 i will be so pissed.
- freebird4, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6Wht?
- inactive, on 10/12/2008, -0/+5PC > Consoles.
- Dreamtwister, on 10/12/2008, -1/+6Which, you know, they are totally going to.
(wah, wah, wah, piracy, wah, wah, wah, casual gamer, wah, wah, wah, paradigm shift, wah, wah, DRM.) - inactive, on 10/12/2008, -1/+5Macs suck anyways.
- mustang460, on 10/12/2008, -0/+4
"Of all our games, Diablo III would be the one to port because of the way it plays,” said Boyarsky, “but there are no plans to move this to any other platform.
also if you watch the vid, the interviewer directly after says "so you are crushing the dreams of console owners?" to which he replies "yea pretty much"
