Blizzard: Microsoft Doesn't Care About PC Gaming
gamasutra.com — Microsoft should "put more emphasis on the Windows operating system," Blizzard Entertainment COO Paul Sams recently told Gamasutra. "Their gaming focus is very much on the [Xbox] 360. And that makes sense, cause they're a hardware manufacturer as well as a software developer," Sams pointed out.

- samard2002, on 07/04/2008, -8/+18It's odd to hear this from Blizzard as I don't tend to think of their games as beings ones that push the limits of technology. Their cinematics and gameplay are the best in the business, but their graphics are average at best. WoW is the most popular game in the world, but the visuals look like something a team of modders could produce. This is not meant to be an insult, just a testament to how good the "game" part of their games are.
- XHashmeerX, on 07/04/2008, -1/+9While their graphics aren't cutting edge, you can't complain about some great art direction.
- samard2002, on 07/04/2008, -0/+7You are right, but art direction does not need help from an MS operating system, which was the point of my post and this article. I knew people would read the first sentence of my post and just take as a knock on Blizzard, which it wasn't at all.
- shadowmoose, on 07/05/2008, -1/+11I've always appreciated the fact that blizzard didn't go for the best graphics in the world. It means that more computers are out there to play their games. Think wow would be as popular if it took crysis level computers to run? Gameplay has always been more important to me then graphics any day of the week.
- dha07030, on 07/05/2008, -0/+2You sort of, almost, kind of insulted Blizzard so people digg you down, sigh.
- t.toe, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3To be fair, the newest Blizzard game (WoW) was released in 2004. Even though there were expansion packs to that game, it's still based on old technology.
- iamsmooth, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3Graphically, Blizzard is not supposed to be superior. They dumb down the graphics so EVERYONE can enjoy their games without paying $2000 for a computer.
- Mejogid, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1My guess would be this article ties in with one of their announced projects - Starcraft II anyone?
@shadowmoose
You're arguing with the air - he was commenting on the fact that games like WoW don't require MS to put more focus on gaming in Windows, since they're technologically comparatively simple (at least in the audio/visual area you would associate with gaming technology). - MattSFJ2, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1See the Diablo 3 gameplay vid
- XHashmeerX, on 07/04/2008, -1/+9While their graphics aren't cutting edge, you can't complain about some great art direction.
- Tahiri, on 07/04/2008, -14/+5Cause PC gaming is nigh-dead

- jgtg32a, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1/sarcasm
Dude, where are we again?
- ChiffX, on 07/04/2008, -4/+12Microsoft doesn't care about PC gaming, George Bush doesn't care about black people, and Blizzard doesn't care about their customers remaining virgins for life.
- vsujohn2, on 07/04/2008, -3/+2Maybe you should speak for yourself on that last part
- ChiffX, on 07/05/2008, -0/+9*Blizzard doesn't care about their World of Warcraft customers remaining virgins for life.
- vsujohn2, on 07/04/2008, -3/+2Maybe you should speak for yourself on that last part
- jo3ry4n, on 07/04/2008, -4/+9I gotta be honest I own a pc and a 360 and lately as times gone on I learn to the 360, I don't want to be a new Graphics card ever few years, it's getting tired when I can buy a console for the same price with a longer shelf life.
- latova, on 07/04/2008, -3/+4I know that's ***** because you're using a computer right now to comment on digg. Graphics cards cost less than any console so I can only assume that either you're an idiot who buys them for like 600 dollars and gets ripped off, or you're a stupid console fanboy who wants to see the PC gaming platform die. Pick one.
- BoonTobias, on 07/04/2008, -6/+1someone who likes consoles more doesn't necessarily feel that pc gaming should die, consoles have better games, it's a fact, not everyone likes to game with a mouse/kb,
and look at all the games available on the 3 consoles, give me 5 pc games that are better
and wow doesn't count - latova, on 07/04/2008, -2/+13Team Fortress 2, Starcraft, Diablo II, Half life series, Counterstrike, Knights of the Old republic, COD4, Deus Ex, Rollercoaster Tycoon, Unreal 2004, etc etc etc. I could spend an hour listing all my favorites.
I know some PC games are for console too. But they'll always look better and play better on PC. Mouse/Keyboard are the best gaming controls ever. Period. - xxbrighteyed, on 07/05/2008, -4/+2Most accurate controller, yes, but I play games on both consoles and PC and I much prefer my Xbox 360 controller to anything else
- mimigins, on 07/05/2008, -1/+3Sims 2! Sims 2!
/ducks - Exbzurq, on 07/05/2008, -0/+5Also you can mod games on a PC and not so much on consoles. That alone makes PC games infinitely better then their console counterparts.
- Falsey, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1"I know that's ***** because you're using a computer right now to comment on digg. "
How does this relate at all to what he said?
- BoonTobias, on 07/04/2008, -6/+1someone who likes consoles more doesn't necessarily feel that pc gaming should die, consoles have better games, it's a fact, not everyone likes to game with a mouse/kb,
- pablo0713, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1More pointless myths from an ignorant computer user. Keep your boring 360!

- zephyrxero, on 07/04/2008, -10/+6Windows gaming is dead! Long live Linux gaming! :P
...now if only Blizzard and Valve would release native versions of their games (and Steam).- Prathik89, on 07/06/2008, -1/+2haha linux.
- jgtg32a, on 07/06/2008, -1/+1They both run rather well in Wine.
- str3ama, on 07/04/2008, -2/+11I can honestly say that's *****. The only thing Microsoft is guilty for is using PC games as a way to promote and force gamers to upgrade to their latest operating system. They like to make games that could otherwise be played on other versions besides the latest Windows, require the latest version to be played. Halo 2 comes to mind, some release group released an XP crack to let you play it on XP.
But in terms of not caring about PC Gaming and focusing on the 360 more, I'd say thats not entirely true because they have to go to the developers. And the developers only want to create for consoles because they think it'll sell more games out of fear of piracy and that they perceive that pc gaming is on the decline. It's mostly a developer issue, I'm sure Microsoft would love to have some great games that it would make require Vista. - robomixx, on 07/05/2008, -9/+1What about black people?
- WhereAmI, on 07/05/2008, -3/+3Then make a Linux port and use the money they have made to develop OpenGL.
- sUGArDawg, on 07/05/2008, -5/+2Umm, right, Microsoft doesn't care about one of their biggest revenue sources....sure, Blizzard, sure
- AsadM, on 07/05/2008, -2/+3Microsoft only cares for money!
- Prathik89, on 07/06/2008, -0/+3O RLY?
- atreusk, on 07/05/2008, -5/+2pc gaming can diminish, no seriously yes
- MewTwo, on 07/05/2008, -5/+2PC gaming... annoying, whiny, and whiny.
- jgtg32a, on 07/06/2008, -0/+2Why wouldn't we be we've been getting a ***** show of lousy ports, with gimped play.
- zeebo, on 07/05/2008, -3/+4Of course Microsoft doesn't care about PC gaming, they've got the Xbox360. Linux users do however. Get us ports of Diablo 3 and Starcraft 2.
- chaosblade77, on 07/05/2008, -1/+2The fact Halo Wars is slated to be a 360 exclusive leads me to believe that they care more about console gaming. However, I wouldn't say they don't care about PC gaming at all. Hopefully Halo Wars will just be a timed exclusive and they are just denying a PC release so it will sell better on the 360. I'd possibly be interested in that, but there's no way I'm buying a RTS like that for a console.
- WhereAmI, on 07/06/2008, -1/+1Not really, real PC gamers don't give a ***** about Halo.
- chaosblade77, on 07/06/2008, -1/+1PC gamers care about RTS games though (at least the ones I know), and with Ensemble behind it there is definitely potential for it to be a good game, regardless of the "Halo" title. Of course, they've kind of gone down hill since AoE2 so it's hard to know what to expect.
- WhereAmI, on 07/06/2008, -1/+1Not really, real PC gamers don't give a ***** about Halo.
- jimmick, on 07/06/2008, -1/+3PC gaming > Card gaming > Board Gaming > Console Gaming
- RunnyBabbit, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1Eh... I'd have to say Diplomacy is better than Poker but I respect your opinion...
...because consoles suck.
- RunnyBabbit, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1Eh... I'd have to say Diplomacy is better than Poker but I respect your opinion...
- MattSFJ2, on 07/06/2008, -0/+1If MS just released Halo 3 for PC (Not just a port either, give it to Midway or something for mouse and keyboard controls) and integrated it with X-Box Live through Windows Live they would make a lot more money.
- jo3ry4n, on 07/08/2008, -0/+0LMFAO!!!
you're a stupid console fan boy who wants to see the PC gaming platform die. Pick one.
Um okay? Genius, I know I am using a computer and I actually am a Network Tech and work with them all day long. You're missing my point and by the way seek therapy. All of you lame asses who snap on a dime to call someone a fan boy is hilarious. I mean how old are you anyway? I merely said the 360 is more convenient to me, it is an opinion and to play the top tier graphics in any pc game yes you do need a very expensive card and we all know that so argue all you want. On a console there is no need to adjust any settings, it looks great on my HDTV with my surround sound reciever (I know I can drag the pc over before you try to 'school me' bro. I am speaking on terms of usability and ease, if you love your PC games? Great, guess what I do too so nice job on misunderstanding the post. I am pointing out that the 360 imho is a much nicer platform for me as of late.
So go take your Prozac you psychos. Oh and nice job pulling out old (but great) PC titles for your argument of 5 good modern titles, Starcraft and Diablo II? Why don't we pull out Castle Wolfenstein and XCom while we're at it hahaha.
Oh and thank you Falsey for having intelligence and understanding me.
