Sorry, bad habit. Just bury me.- NGliam, on 06/26/2008, -25/+6I don't get it, why is it "an"? An multiplayer?
- Stupidumb, on 06/26/2008, -9/+57"M" is pronounced with an "e" sound at the beginning. Just leave it as an acronym, you *****. YOU ***** ***** *****. I'm sorry, this diablo 3 news is making me sex nuts and retard strong.
- Codwhy, on 06/26/2008, -1/+7before you know it he will be attacking you trying to put your dick in his mouth
- Murdats, on 06/26/2008, -3/+13actually it would be an massive
- afx1, on 06/26/2008, -0/+18it's how you pronounce the word, not how it's spelled. em em oh
- dominikkom, on 06/26/2008, -16/+3I never knew failing could be a habit

- dominikkom, on 06/26/2008, -3/+2Cant say that I do, living in Europe and all. Seems kind of trivial
- DragonForce4, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1You seem to do it quite well
- biffen, on 06/26/2008, -19/+6You're a idiot. I'm an genius,
- phpftw, on 06/26/2008, -19/+2It's actually 'a MMO' not 'an MMO', same as 'a HTML page' which is correct, 'an HTML page' isn't.
- thekungfuman, on 06/26/2008, -1/+24No, it is "an MMO" just like it is "an HTML" page. You use an when the next work begins with a vowel or a vowel sound. The letter M is pronounced "eh-mm" so using an would be correct.
- rovsky, on 06/26/2008, -1/+22wrong, you go by the sound...if it has a vowel sound in the beginning its "an"
- skinnyskittles, on 06/26/2008, -7/+1he is saying the words and not the letters hence his use of "a" for "massive"
- Elranzer, on 06/26/2008, -0/+8MMO = "em em oh"
Therefor "an MMO" - emjaymj, on 06/26/2008, -0/+9Unless you actually think to yourself "a hypertext markup language page" every time you see "an HTML page," you're double wrong. The use of a/an is completely phonetic. Same reason we say "an hour" or "a user."
- Handonam, on 06/26/2008, -0/+3http://www.gpuss.co.uk/english_usage/a_or_an.htm
................... - exomni, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1@ thekungfuman
""You use an when the next work begins with a vowel or a vowel sound.""
Wrong. You use "an" where the next worD begins with a vowel sound. Period.
You wouldn't say "an used condom", it's "a used condom". "A" and "an" is entirely phonetic. It's there to make the english language speakable.
- bonds, on 06/26/2008, -9/+3Done!
- Augie1969, on 06/26/2008, -1/+47Good grammar is NOT a bad habit.
- thanakar, on 06/26/2008, -14/+2To bad you're wrong. "A" is correct in this case since the next word does not start with a vowel. "I have it is not a massively multiplayer online...."
- Draakan, on 06/26/2008, -0/+8Are there different rules concerning letters on their own? Like when you pronounce the letter M, it starts with an E sound. Would that make the use of "an" instead of "a" correct or not?
- Handonam, on 06/26/2008, -1/+1to bad?
wow. you got way 'to' defensive there with your bad grammar skills.
i really don't know why you guys are THIS CONFUSED on the 'a' and 'an' topic. this is something you should have known way before you cheated on your college term papers.
- themastersb, on 06/26/2008, -11/+9An hero?
- Rndm_Tngnt, on 06/26/2008, -5/+3A hero.
An heroic action. - zyklon, on 06/26/2008, -0/+6Rndm_Tngnt: WOOOOOOSH
- Rndm_Tngnt, on 06/26/2008, -5/+3A hero.
- xaeon, on 06/26/2008, -1/+8Jesus, I can't believe there is so much arguing over this very simple piece of grammar. It's "an." The difference between using "a" and "an" depends on the phonetic pronunciation of the following word. MMO has an "em" sound to it, and therefore it is absolutely correct to say "an MMO."
If you disagree, you're wrong.- sikosmurf, on 06/27/2008, -1/+3That depends on whether or not you think "An em-em-oh" or "a massively multiplayer online " Either way can be correct.
- Dracusis, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1xaeon is right, sikosmurf is wrong.
You should never fully expand words of an acronym in speech, to do so nullifies their purpose -- an acronym is used to simplify the expression of multiple words that form a more complex meaning. As MMO does not form a pronounceable word of any kind, xaeon is correct.
The case where this gets really confusing is with an acronym (or any word really) starts with a/an H. As xaeon pointed out, the use of 'a' or 'an' is dictated by the sound of the word, but many words that begin with H use a silent form. For example, "It would be an honour" it the proper form, in contrast "It would be a honour" just sounds clumsy. Although due to the nature of English, nouns starting with a/an H can sound clumsy depending oh how the word is pronounced. If you are an American or an Aussie then saying "an HTML page" may feel strange, but try saying it with a pompous British accent or sound out the H with as "aye-ch" and it flows much more naturally. However, if you're like me, a "hay-ch" sounder, then using "an" feels wrong.
Stupid English language. - Silentnite85, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2You mean I shouldn't say Laugh out Loud? Because I do. I'm that guy. I say that in normal speech now instead of laughing. Or I would if anyone would talk to me IRL.
- acid_jazz, on 06/27/2008, -0/+2Unless you pronounce it "Mamo"...
*shrug*
Yeah, I don't know what he was thinking.

- zdiddy85, on 06/26/2008, -9/+21But if it was, I'd still pay for it. :(
- kencurran, on 06/26/2008, -1/+3I have to agree with this.
- CaptMonkey, on 06/26/2008, -4/+152It seems unlikely that they would make it an MMO, since it would be in direct competition with their biggest moneymaker. Plus, I think they want to corner the market on people who refuse to pay a monthly fee who are currently playing games like Guild Wars.
Of course, they could always make it an MMO and make a package deal of something like $20 a month for Diablo + WoW... and we would all pay it. Productivity would slump, families would break apart, and Blizzard employees would swim in Scrooge McDuck-style money bins.- apec766, on 06/26/2008, -1/+24I would personally drop out of school for 3 years. >_>
- paranoiabacon, on 06/26/2008, -9/+1A theory I read on Gizmodo was that they might take the opposite track as they're doing with WoW and release World of Diablo on consoles with no monthly subscription. It would not be in any competition with their leading money minter, and would even encourage WoW players to go out and buy it. Moreover it would branch out even further into the casual market. Win-win? The more I hear about it the more I get excited and the more I would respect Blizzard for being evil geniuses.
- reconflux, on 06/26/2008, -0/+11If the game was better than WoW and people moved over, wouldn't they lose money?
- fadetoone, on 06/26/2008, -1/+2I'd at least call it something like the Damned of Diablo and not use World again.
- Codwhy, on 06/26/2008, -2/+4@reconflux -
lose money to who?
themselves? - strictnein, on 06/26/2008, -0/+6@Codwhy: if "World of Diablo" had no subscription fee, and people moved from WoW to WoD they'd lose revenue after awhile.
- IndigoMoss, on 06/26/2008, -0/+3That sounds like the worst idea I've ever heard.
- Tugsy, on 06/26/2008, -8/+3I'm not into the whole MMO thing, I've seen what it can do to people... However, I am a huge Diablo fan so if they do release the third installment as one I may have to risk it.
- MoofTheStoof, on 06/26/2008, -2/+10I'm not into the whole (_______) thing, I've seen what it can do to people...
You can put anything into the blank, but oddly the most correct answer to put there is "people." - Pittance, on 06/26/2008, -0/+6You've seen what it can do to weak people with no self control or limiting factors. Limit yourself and diversify your activities.
- Tugsy, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Well my point was that my friend at Uni got far to addicted to one of these MMO, not sure which one is was, he was living a diet of micirwaveable food, we lost or social contact with him (in the same house!) and his girlfriend left him. It just seems like you have dedicate far too much of your time to get anything out of these games. Here's to hoping they stick to the classic Diablo gameplay standard.
- MoofTheStoof, on 06/26/2008, -2/+10I'm not into the whole (_______) thing, I've seen what it can do to people...

- Syphon8, on 06/26/2008, -1/+2D2 was pretty much an MMO anyways. It'll be massively multiplayer for sure.
- LucerinRed, on 06/26/2008, -2/+15Something along the business model of Guild Wars wouldn't be bad. A lot of people referred to Guild Wars as a spiritual successor of D2, especially considering a lot of the original D2 staff worked on GW.
- CHAD3814, on 06/26/2008, -1/+8Uhh most of the D1 & D2 engineers (founded and) work at Flagship, making Hellgate and Mythos.

- ligyron, on 06/26/2008, -0/+8Well, didn't/don't they have job postings referring to a "next-gen MMORPG"?
- cJw314, on 06/26/2008, -1/+5Yeah, but they've also said they're working on an MMO... as well as another game or two.
My vote is D3 is NOT an mmo. - Pittance, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2Correct. They are probably working on a starcraft MMO, or an entirely different world for an MMO. Or they simply like calling WoW "next-gen" because they want to get good people to upgrade it and keep it competitive for a longer time.
- Syphon8, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Yesterday they posted an offer for someone to work with the developers of D1 and D2.
- cJw314, on 06/26/2008, -1/+5Yeah, but they've also said they're working on an MMO... as well as another game or two.
- Epik, on 06/26/2008, -8/+12It will be an MMO. It will not compete directly with WoW. Diablo and Warcraft have always attracted a different crowd with Diablo usually getting the older or more mature players. It will be an MMO because Blizzard, of all companies, knows it brings in the cash and now they've got the experience. I want a D3 I can play longer than 2 weeks. What are you going to do after you beat the game and it's not an MMO? Go on and continue doing mephisto runs for items? What for?
I hope it's a Diablo MMO. It will bring in so many people who are not playing WoW. And I hope the WoW kiddies stay in Azeroth.- TaKeReMaster, on 06/26/2008, -1/+5pk silly

Hahahahahhahahaahahahahahahaha......ooooooh boooy........

I'm sorry....whew. Okay...I'm over it.
What is so mature about Diablo?- jamesLankford, on 06/26/2008, -14/+7people who play WoW are 13 years old
people who diablo are over 25 years old - bonds, on 06/26/2008, -0/+9lawl, battlenet much?
- gaqua, on 06/26/2008, -1/+9jamesLankford: most of the people I know who play WoW are in their 20-30s. After all they have what, 10 million subscribers?
And before World of Warcraft, the only Warcraft games were Real-Time Strategy, not exactly the most common PC games for idiotic children. (That would unfortunately be Counter-Strike).
Diablo is a click-fest, and while it was a fun game with great ambience, saying it's "more mature" than Warcraft is hilariously stupid. I cannot count the number of times I would be hassled by Koreans asking for "SOJ!?" or selling duped items.
Besides, everybody knows the most mature game in the world is minesweeper. The drama, the tension.... - Syphon8, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1The story, and the content?
- jamesLankford, on 06/26/2008, -14/+7people who play WoW are 13 years old
- CannedMango, on 06/26/2008, -0/+9I don't think it will be an MMO. WoW has already "borrowed" all of the key elements from both Warcraft and Diablo so making it another MMO would be pretty redundant at this point. It's just going to be an up-to-date hack and slash, destroy-your-mouse adventure game.
Between this and Starcraft 2, I think I should probably apply for my unemployment insurance in advance.- bullhead2007, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2I'm just curious. Other than swords, magic, and bows, what does WoW share in common with Diablo?
- RussellDovey, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2Diablo and WOW share:
- Sockets in weapons and armour;
- The sound gems make when you pick them up and put them down;
- Clicking all the ***** time;
- The occasional boss or creature in a dungeon;
- Very similar inventory system. - CannedMango, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1I was thinking mostly:
• magic weapon properties (WoW weapons/armour really are just an extension of Diablo weapons/armour)
• inventory style/equipment screen
• talent trees
• classes
The only thing to really differentiate the two would be the types of enemies and the world map.
- Cate320, on 06/26/2008, -1/+3Diablo and Warcraft attracted different crowds only because they were different types of games. Hack & slash and strategy. The characters and setting were pretty similar when it comes down to it. Both fantasy-ish worlds. The only differences are minor.. like D2 doesn't have any other playable races besides humans, and the world is slightly less technologically advanced.
If they were both MMOs, they would be competing with each other. I had never played Warcraft when I picked up WoW and I was surprised at how many aspects of it actually reminded me of Diablo II.
I would love a World of Diablo MMO though, I end up trying every MMO that comes out anyway, and with Blizz behind it, you know it would be great. - Nitesmoke, on 06/26/2008, -1/+2Diablo 3 is going to a MMO. Diablo 2 is. I remember about a year ago maybe in PC gamer they had an interview with a game designer at Blizzard about Diablo 3. The way he described it was: There is a war going on between Heaven and Hell. You choose a side and go from there. There will probably be a single player game as well, but I can not imagine Blizzard not making online play a huge part of this game. Will there be a monthly fee? Who knows? I wouldn't expect anything like a WoW clone, though. D3 will have a much darker and more mature theme. I wouldn't be surprised for it to me "M" rated.
- Onion575, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2Diablo? Mature players? Ever tried playing D2 LoD on closed battle.net? Some of the most immature bastards I've ever come across...
- ParaSwarm, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Diablo mature? Warcraft immature? You obviously never played a Warcraft game before WoW. Believe it or not, there were actually 3 Warcraft games released before World of Warcraft, and they were quite good. I'm not making this up.
- atroxodisse, on 06/27/2008, -0/+1It's D3 and it's not an MMO.
- deusflac, on 06/26/2008, -9/+3ummm wasnt diablo 2 an mmo. it was massive, it had multi players and it was online.
- jamesLankford, on 06/26/2008, -0/+6how many people could play the same instance of diablo at the same time?
1000"s ? no
so it wasn't massivley multi player - freshyill, on 06/26/2008, -0/+4It's not a matter of being massive and multi-player it's a matter of being "massively multi-player".
GTA IV is massive, and it has multiplayer, but that doesn't fit either. - stretch611, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1But the biggest thing was that it had a decent size solo play mode.
People could easily spend a few hundred hours playing it without ever connecting to a network. If hack'n'slash was your thing, it had great re-playability through different classes and different ways of playing those classes with skill selections.
- jamesLankford, on 06/26/2008, -0/+6how many people could play the same instance of diablo at the same time?
- Hokuman, on 06/26/2008, -5/+5i SO hope you are wrong, and they make D3 a MMO, WoW was a huge success and i believe D3 as a MMO will sure be.
- Drifton, on 06/26/2008, -1/+8I wouldn't mind it being an MMO as long as it doesnt look or feel like WoW I guess.
- nubbz51, on 06/26/2008, -3/+5I loved Diablo and Diablo II, I played them both for months and months, I don't like WoW at all, so I think that MMO is the way to go
- tim5779, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2just look at their "top secret" project job offerings, they're all mmo related.
http://www.blizzard.com/us/jobopp/ - napalmx, on 06/26/2008, -0/+3I agree, hopefully it isn't an MMO.
But for all those who say Blizzard wouldn't possibly release a game in direct competition to their prime cash raker, I say this: Blizzard is notoriously slow in development. This game will spend at least 3 years in development before it is released. Blizzard knows this, and they could plan on coinciding it with the end of WoW's life cycle.
Course, this is all useless speculation until we hear it from a reputable source (read: Blizzard.)- Pittance, on 06/26/2008, -1/+1Starcraft vs Warcraft. Direct competition. Now I know they were offset years apart, but people still play starcraft today, and definitely after WC3 came out.
- dn11, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1those weren't MMOs - they didn't have subscription fees and didn't require the kind of time dedication to get into that an MMO does
- Hey_Vern, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2Of course it might have been in development for the past two years.
- Pittance, on 06/26/2008, -1/+1Starcraft vs Warcraft. Direct competition. Now I know they were offset years apart, but people still play starcraft today, and definitely after WC3 came out.
- fool13, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2I really hope you are right. Between college and working I simply would not have the time to play a MMO. I also played WoW for 2 years and I can say I really have no desire to get THAT involved in a game again. Either way, I'm very excited for D3!
- Jookly, on 06/26/2008, -5/+2I hope it is a MMO because that would rock, you guys are losers.
- wtfy0, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2it's def an MMO. They have been hiring like crazy for a "Next Gen MMO"
- phorty40, on 06/26/2008, -0/+3The MMO they are hiring for is the LOST VIKINGS VS THE PURPLE WALRUS ARMY
- jaynemother, on 06/26/2008, -2/+1Looks like Digg needs to go back to grammar school.
- dn11, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1It's possible but WoW will still be popular for a long time. I don't think they'll make another full on MMO until they are ready to replace WoW, and WoW isn't exactly declining to any great degree right now. But, it will probably be more MMO like. The question is whether it has any subscription fees...
- EvilFerret, on 06/26/2008, -1/+1I'm thinking they'll most likely do something in between, much like Hellgate decided to do. There will still be single player/lan elements, and will have free multiplayer.....Then they'll have a option of paying a small monthly fee ($10/month) for *premium* content. There will be constant updates with new items/quests/areas ect, some will be available to free players while the insane stuff will be for subscribers only. It will have hubs where players meet/trade/group ect (much like Guild Wars/Hellgate), but will NOT be MMO.
My biggest worry is them announcing it for the 360 and PS3 as well, which would mean watered down gameplay to suit the console gamers with short attention spans.- phorty40, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1yeah but Hellgate was literaly hell. it was unstable and full of glitches and ...

It's called EA.
Blizzard puts heart, time, effort and care into their games. And if it takes 10 years I don't mind waiting.- apec766, on 06/26/2008, -0/+9This is the truth. I'd rather wait a few years between games to get TRUE QUALITY games that can stand the test of time, rather than rehashing of crap. That is why I LOVE Blizzard: 3 franchises. That's it. And every one of them good.
- strictnein, on 06/26/2008, -1/+2Is it ironic that the starter of this thread is named "EA Swanson"?
- kraetos, on 06/26/2008, -1/+10Mythical Man-Month. You can't just throw engineers at anything involving programming and expect things to speed up. In fact, you can expect them to slow down, while the new engineers spend months getting familiar with the code that's already been written.
Blizzard games are done when their done. Every game Blizzard has released in 12 years has been a smash hit. Many of them changed the very genre itself. You can't argue with that.

"There is no cow level" was a mantra from the original Diablo. It was because of that reason that Blizzard added the cow level to Diablo 2.
That quote should dugg up by anyone who actually played the original. - banido, on 06/26/2008, -1/+11"There is no cow level" is also a cheat in StarCraft... instant win I think.

....I honestly hope to god D3 (Damn that has a nice ring to it doesn't it? D3...) won't be all about the items this time. Maybe rip a page from WoW's book and introduce "Bind on Pickup" items. Now trying stealing my Enigma you *****!- Cate320, on 06/26/2008, -1/+39I find collecting items more fun than the actual story :x
- Elliottx, on 06/26/2008, -0/+7Yeah. Collecting the items was fun, but since you could trade anything it felt empty.
I remember I once got all 3 of my level 99 fully geared characters stripped of everything they owned because of a bad maphack download. (Yeah, I was that stupid)
The story is pretty good though if you're really into that stuff. I love the fact that the "Mysterious Stranger" is the hero you played in Diablo 1 who went nuts and tried to control Diablo/seal him away by putting the soulstone into his head. Lol.
I just hope Blizzard don't go too gung-ho with the graphics on this, I don't think my pretty vista laptop could handle it.- Useight, on 06/26/2008, -2/+0I hope they do ramp up the graphics. I have a superclocked 8800GT for a reason.

are the graphics that good? no
was the storyline that good? yes, but do i play any other game religiously even 10 years later for THEIR storyline? no- Hokuman, on 06/26/2008, -0/+9THE GRAPHICS WERE NO GOOD AT THE TIME ?
... well i beg to disagree.. - chrgrose, on 06/26/2008, -0/+4I agree items were pretty critical to the gameplay, but spellcasting (or special abilities, whatever you want to call them, I was always a cold or electric Sorc) is probably at least on equal footing.
Also the graphics were pretty sweet. It has the same appeal as Starcraft graphics with their grainy textures and such. It isn't the graphics themselves but the 800x600 resolution.

"If you pick up this item you can NEVER give it to anyone else, EVER."
"Why?"
"BECAUSE... well... because it magically binds to your soul!"
Stupid, stupid, stupid.
On a secondary notes, wishing Diablo 2 not be about items is like wishing food not be about eating.- Hokuman, on 06/26/2008, -1/+2I find it strange that you like the idea of craving a crystal inside a person head would turn him into a huge demon and a item bound to the soul being stupid... well who knows... maybe it's just me...

Spore on the Wii and DS? They will probably have a different gameplay (Not sure though) . And Starcraft 2 will only come out as a PC and Mac game.

- Shao00, on 06/26/2008, -0/+23It wasn't meant to be sarcastic. Blizzard take their time on these games and polishes the hell out of them. You don't see this from any other game company. While it's painful to have to wait, their games become legendary when released.

- Ymeg, on 06/26/2008, -5/+9For everyone who says that the Diablo team left: I'm pretty sure it was just the managers. Not the actual production team.
- XBSHX, on 06/26/2008, -0/+8It wasn't just the managers. There was a mass exit of Blizzard North staff, most of which formed Flagship and Castaway. Blizzard North was then merged into the normal Blizzard staff and they're all now on the same campus.

Also Castaway Entertainment no longer exists. They didn't have enough funding to continue operations. Should have stayed at Blizzard IMO.

D2 was awesome because of the free dedicated servers they had. (and partly the reason why i never got into WoW) - XXXXXXXXXXXXXX, on 06/26/2008, -2/+11BATTLE.NET
Who the hell do you think Blizzard is? - fullphaser, on 06/26/2008, -3/+1That was back before the bandwidth consumed by the players overwhelmed the profit made off game sells, also d2 / d1 had a single player mode if they were making it (and I'm gonna go out on a limb and say their developers are tied up right now making another game) than it would more than likely have a monthly fee to cover server cost.
- Maverick0420, on 06/26/2008, -1/+5its still just speculation

- dygel, on 06/26/2008, -2/+43Buried as inaccurate. Blizzard hasn't confirmed anything yet. DiabloII.net claims to have "inside sources" confirming it. So, "DiabloII says, 'Yes'", not Blizzard.

- xenoc1de, on 06/26/2008, -0/+3It was runes after the soj, but I don't know if it stayed that way.
- dn90, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1last I checked, high runes have plummeted in value because 90% of the ones that exist are dupes, and sojs were worth like 3 hr's

I really wonder if it would be an mmo or rpg like it has been, time will tell. I think that if they do make it similar, they should make the games allow more then 9 people at a time, or possibly have "raid" games that allow more people. - Goldbricker, on 06/26/2008, -3/+75Just once I'd love for one of these announcements to go like this "We'd like to announce Diablo III. - cornerbodega, on 06/26/2008, -3/+32Why does the title say "Blizzard Affirms" and then cite a fan site? Buried as an attempt to shatter my dreams.
- kabojnk, on 06/26/2008, -0/+1Because the affirmation and the Blizzard fansite confirmation were two different things.
- Rodalli, on 06/26/2008, -0/+2The "affirmation" is Blizzard's VP confirming that they ARE announcing a new game this weekend, he just declined to say what game. But since StarCraft 2 has already been announced, I think it's a fair beat to say that the announced title is going to be a Diablo-related one, unless Blizz is launching a new franchise (unlikely).
