- leonidas22, on 12/26/2008, -17/+253That was just amazing. No doubt my favorite WoW user created video. The shadows/lightning/movement were just superb. Only thing I would want different is some better music. Which it seems I am not alone on this. Something fast with a quick beat.
- chaoswings, on 12/27/2008, -0/+123That's cause this video isn't machinima. In machinima people use the game engine to produce the footage, so they are basically limited to what you can normally do in-game. But this movie was produced using a professional 3D rendering software like Maya. The person used Blizzard's in-game models and then created every animation specifically for this movie.
- merrickx, on 12/26/2008, -7/+104Wow, the guy says he an animator and foreseeing a layoff. I think he wont have any trouble finding a decent job in the field. This is some of the best machinima. I want to see it dubbed in with some dramatic, orchestra music. It was done so clean too. Makes me think he's being modest when he says he's an animator. This looks akin to things you'd see professional and commercial animators making.
- shaka999, on 12/27/2008, -60/+136Screw y'all. The music fit perfectly.
Hats off, that was awesome. - protip, on 12/27/2008, -0/+75Rest assured you are not that much of a nerd, there is no such thing as Sword of Azshara, those would be Chromatically Tempered Swords.
Talon of Azshara doesn't even look close to those. - Stormwern, on 12/26/2008, -16/+91Wow, best machinima I've seen. Animation, camera, music sync, everything 10/10.
- inactive, on 12/26/2008, -8/+81That was outstanding.
Most WoW Machinima's are filled with the same crappy in game movements/mouth flaps and emotes. This was just...wow o.o - svensko, on 12/27/2008, -49/+118The music ruined it. Was I watching a war short or a pop video? I couldn't decide.
- SasquatchBill, on 12/27/2008, -17/+80I liked the music. It was different from what you would expect.
Someone further down the comments suggested something orchestral, and I just think that if it was orchestral it would be exactly what we were all expecting. Fast orchestral? Been done before.
J-Pop with horns? Wasn't expecting it at all. Made me expect comedy at first, but by the end I liked it. It gave the animation it's own style. - flamyngo, on 12/27/2008, -5/+56Okay, usually I get bored like halfway through these machinima things... this time I was wanting more!
- airwalke, on 12/27/2008, -12/+60I must be the only one who thought the music fit perfectly. I love the sweeping orchestral scores, but really, it all gets old after awhile. Nice machinima to break the mold.
- Baronvontito1, on 12/27/2008, -2/+42That was surprisingly badass.
- Spuy767, on 12/27/2008, -7/+45What internet video would be complete without an incredibly grtating soundtrack.
- GirlsCallMeMatt, on 12/27/2008, -9/+44I agree, the poppy japanese music didn't really fit with the animation
- karkin, on 12/27/2008, -17/+51Rogues in full t2.
Dualweilding [Sword of Azshara]
:/ I feel bad knowing that. - Dookie113, on 12/27/2008, -11/+43animation was impressive, but the music... a little strange imo
- Geezus101, on 12/26/2008, -6/+38I hope this is made into a series. Everything was incredibly well done.
Oh and here is it's warcraftmovies.com link, so you can download it and rate it.
http://warcraftmovies.com/movieview.php?id=97157 - >mark, on 12/27/2008, -30/+58music is bloody annoying
- LanceLungstrong, on 12/27/2008, -2/+27um, how would that be? Bloodelves where only added with the BC expansion.
- Zpanzer, on 12/27/2008, -0/+23well, to end up with a result like this, you first need to know how to animate.. thats the hardest part.
The dude who did the animations for this video is clearly someone who have been doing it for a long time, resulting in all his animations are looking very "alive", animation is not something you learn over night ;)
Once you've reached a satisfying level of animation skills, you'll export the wow models needed for the movie and start rigging them(read: giving the 3d model a skeleton and assigning it to the model), this process can be hard, to get a good rig where all the muscles etc. behave like in the real world takes time.
After the rigging is done, you are set. Animate everything and make the sorroundings(in this case, export Stormwind out of WoW), set up some light, render it and make the last things inside a video editor. Congratulations, you're done :) - doraemonxo, on 12/27/2008, -5/+28definitely if a more ominous soundtrack was in place would make it better. i felt like i was watching britney spears kills the humans.
- slashdotordigg, on 12/27/2008, -4/+2510/10. I was kinda expecting a 13 yr old boy bitching over some rare item he literally gave away. Great story as well, FTW for its suspense.
- Jacs02056, on 12/27/2008, -12/+30Onyxia will always be my favorite boss.
- TotalHalibut, on 12/27/2008, -1/+18Quite. It's an amazing feat, don't get me wrong, but it's not machinima. Machinima is about working within the constraints of the game in question, and yes, sometimes that involves using emotes. The trick is not using them too often, and utilizing different camera angles and shots to make it less obvious that you're using the same canned animation repeatedly.
- thecyko1, on 12/27/2008, -4/+20The poppy japanese music didn't fit the anime-ish fight scenes?
- bashturd, on 12/27/2008, -0/+16he didn't just record a game, he created the animation himself based on blizzard's models.
- Incomp3tnt, on 12/27/2008, -0/+15Yeah that's not machinima. Machinima is limited to what the game engine allows, and none of that can be done in-game (which would be awesome). The creator took the WoW models and made it in another program, people further down the comments suspect Maya.
- Anarchon, on 12/26/2008, -6/+20Anyone know what he used to make this? Comments at Vimeo asked the question, but we've got no answers yet.
- ElGanyan, on 12/27/2008, -2/+16But ended up being mostly cheesy. No, it doesn't make sense. That animation deserved better than that music.
- quendiljt, on 12/27/2008, -12/+26That was really excellently animated, and even the music grew on me. I'd love to see more.
- AyaJulia, on 12/27/2008, -0/+14I can only imagine you're being buried because no one realizes the assassination target WAS Onyxia? /shrug. Made me want to fight her, that's for sure.
- jave8u, on 12/27/2008, -3/+17Damn. I don't even play/like/enjoy WoW.
- ingrrid, on 12/27/2008, -1/+14Credits?
- doubleoh7, on 12/27/2008, -2/+13Hide & Seek by Namie Amuro.
- Korgmeister, on 12/27/2008, -1/+12Are you sure that was a machinima?
It seemed to be intimated that the models, textures and environment were taken from WoW, but the video was rendered in a proper 3D program. - echos, on 12/27/2008, -0/+10This is the "How do they do it" post...
Basically the trick to creating something like this is just knowing how to use tools like those available at http://wowmodelviewer.org/ to convert the models into something a 3D animation suite can understand. The 3D animation tool can be anything that can either be something that reads the 3D models directly or uses an accepted format from a model conversion tool. Most likely this animation was done in something like 3DS Max or Maya.
Then once you have the model in your 3D app you can then begin to animate however you wish, some extra model rigging may be required if the conversion tool doesn't convert this as well. Then go through your sequences and build the animations and then render them. Once rendered you then drop them into a non-linear editor such as Final Cut Pro or Premiere. Thats all there really is to it...
Also having talent doesn't hurt either. - LucasVB, on 12/27/2008, -1/+11"Pop war" seems to work exceptionally well, though.
- samson7842, on 12/27/2008, -1/+11I guess I'm in the minority here. I liked both the animation and the music.
- Stormwern, on 12/26/2008, -1/+11Maya I think, iirc I've read in interviews that blizz models are in that format.
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -10/+20Nice Bloodfang. This must of happened pre-BC. The good old days. :(
- inactive, on 12/27/2008, -1/+10Well, Bloodelf characters were added in BC, but NPC Bloodelves existed pre-BC, so the models would exist.
- candela3, on 12/27/2008, -0/+9Ho-...ly ....crap.
I liked it all... EVEN the music was an excellent touch.
Digging it doesn't even do this video justice, but nonetheless;
Dugg. - DragonForce4, on 12/27/2008, -0/+9...
- dangsta, on 12/27/2008, -31/+39terrible music wtf.
- Viperlasson, on 12/27/2008, -7/+15Would you rather have some linkin park or a random death metal group? I thought the music fit perfectly with the main character.
- AyaJulia, on 12/27/2008, -0/+8To be fair, the models were different back then. That was definitely a post-BC model. :) But yeah, it's stupid to ignore the fact that High Elves/Blood Elves have been in the Warcraft series all along.
- Seemefearme, on 12/27/2008, -0/+8Great video. The complaints about the music baffle me, as I found it to go perfect with the entire video. If he's going to be laid off, I have faith he'll find work with as gifted he seems to be.
- mutants, on 12/27/2008, -0/+8Blizzard should be contacting this person about a job. This is incredibly good!
- christinme, on 12/27/2008, -0/+7dude, if that guy runs out of a job it was because he had a manager as an idiot. That was an amazing movie. That was just phenomenal. The shadow, animation, story line, etc. The music was interesting but it was still very nice and added to the intense fighting. And holy crap was the fighting sweet. You can't even get that kind of fighting in actual movies. This fighting was nicely played out and unexpected. I say unexpected because usually you can tell what is going to happen in a movie, but this fighting was simply amazing.
- Th3_anOmoLy, on 12/27/2008, -2/+9Some of her moves reminded me of Ayame in Tenchu.
Awesome video. -
