- Slashered, on 11/08/2009, -1/+128A large version of the img can be opened inside. I'd also like to note that this huge ***** page-splitting Dragon Age ad had nothing to do with this submission.
- clondike7, on 11/09/2009, -3/+77dammit Digg. changing the background of the site isn't fair. AdBlock can't stop that!
- nixpix66, on 11/09/2009, -2/+48On a side note, who else is really really ***** excited for Mass Effect 2?
- Frankzulla, on 11/08/2009, -1/+45That's pretty much spot-on. I love Bioware but they sure as hell have a formula.
- Kerafyrm, on 11/09/2009, -0/+32It's on every single gaming article submission.
- Brododium, on 11/09/2009, -11/+41Buried for this ridiculous page-consuming advertisement.
- PhoenixAvatar2, on 11/09/2009, -0/+23To block it - right click it -> adblock plus: block image -> OK.
Only problem is it leaves a black background. - Orbital101, on 11/09/2009, -2/+24I just wanna chime in so that one more voice is saying "The ad background is lame" for the Digg.com powerbrokers to hear.
If I wanted to look at Myspace, I'd be on Myspace. - bobotheking, on 11/09/2009, -0/+16Interesting read, but I think these cliches apply to just about every RPG (and even a lot of non-RPGs). For example, I'll try it with Final Fantasy 1.
Humble origins-- Well, you're a band of warriors, but it's implied that you aren't a particularly special band of warriors. If this were in the chart, it would probably be shaded yellow.
Devastating battle-- Early on, you battle Garland, setting the course of events into motion. It doesn't turn your world upside down, but that's mostly due to the lack of a plot. This would probably be yellow too.
Two companions (magical and martial)-- It all depends on how you picked your team. You will have three companions and they are with you from the very beginning. This would be yellow or red.
Elite order-- There's no elite order, but the king of Coneria (along with everyone with anything to say) makes a big deal about how only you can make the orbs shine again. I'd rate this blue.
Four locations-- Yup. Earth Cave, Gurgu Volcano, Onrac, and the Sky Castle. After that, you revisit the Temple of Fiends, but let's not split hairs here. This should be a deep shade of blue.
Sinister organization-- Nope. Again, this has everything to do with the lack of a plot in FF1. However, you can be sure that every single RPG that followed it is subject to this cliche. I defy you to come up with a counter example. Red in this case.
Dream sequence-- Nope. This is probably due to the limitations of the NES. I'm guessing they'd have a dream sequence if they could. This cliche is also particularly common in later RPGs (I'm having a hard time thinking of one that doesn't have a dream sequence of some kind).
Ancient civilization-- Lefein. In fact, most of the last quarter of the game is in some way connected to the Lefeinish. Easy blue.
So I admit that it's not an especially good fit, but I think it works pretty well considering that the game is over 20 years old. Video games are full of these cliches. There's a pretty comprehensive database over at tvtropes.org if you want to waste a few hours.. - nepidae, on 11/09/2009, -0/+16Ow my eyes ... And yes I'm talking about the terrible digg "theme" at the moment. hopefully when i log on next in a few days it will be gone.
- fatfonzie, on 11/09/2009, -0/+14Kevin needs the money.
- FallingDonkey, on 11/09/2009, -1/+14Dammit, Bethesda / Bio ware. *****. I'm an idiot.
- CSFFlame, on 11/09/2009, -1/+14Yes it can:
http://cotnet.diggstatic.com/img/skins/* - Stevosaurous, on 11/09/2009, -0/+11if you block the ad..... its a bit like digg is a random encounter in the desolation of space.....
right no more rpgs for me. - MutatedNantuko, on 11/09/2009, -0/+10http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hero_with_a_Thous ...
- TobiasParker, on 11/09/2009, -0/+10you have to tool around with adblock to get it gone, and then you are left with a black background.
- Mossman85, on 11/09/2009, -0/+8WHY COULDN'T IT AT LEAST BE A CLOSE UP OF THAT HOT ELF ON THE RIGHT
- Brododium, on 11/09/2009, -1/+9When more of the page is occupied by advertisement than content/comments, then I think it's somewhat excessive and invasive.
I'm not upset, I'm just teary and hopelessly emotional. - ChileanGoD, on 11/09/2009, -1/+8If you hate these background ads you can express yourself here:
http://digg.com/design/Who_on_Digg_hates_this - Tyrghast, on 11/09/2009, -0/+7BLOODY SCARFACE GUY IS WATCHING YOU DIGG
This article was mostly good for making me reminisce through all the great stories Bioware has had the privilege of sharing with us. - Soleanthia, on 11/09/2009, -0/+6It's not the submitters fault. Digg has it on every gaming submission.
- emjaymj, on 11/09/2009, -0/+6A lot of these are pretty much just hallmarks of the fantasy genre in general. It's like saying guns and explosions and martial arts are cliches of action movies... well no *****.
I mean, even the Lord of the Rings trilogy would score blue in nearly every category. - hacknslash64, on 11/09/2009, -0/+6The dream sequences in BG2 were some freaky *****
- bagelmaster, on 11/09/2009, -8/+14I want another KoTOR made by Bioware and not that stupid MMO. :'(
- ShadeDragon, on 11/09/2009, -0/+4Just because some of the framing for the plot is similar doesn't mean they are all the same. Characters imo have deeper personalities and gameplay is richer then most other game producing companies.
- Tyrghast, on 11/09/2009, -1/+5Too bad. I'm about 40 hours in on my first character and barely even scratching the surface of such a rich and fascinating RPG. The side-characters and quests are more fleshed out than any previous Bioware RPG.
- milwaukeesbeast, on 11/09/2009, -1/+4And by tool around he means right click the picture and select block image.....
- SkittlesUSA, on 11/09/2009, -2/+5On a side note to your side note, who else is really really ***** excited for The Old Republic??
BioWare is sweet. - MrFisty, on 11/10/2009, -0/+3I was playing Mass Effect on the weekend and couldn't help note heaps of similarities to KOTOR: the card game in the casino, hacking the Mira core, a unifying space citadel etc. There were others but I can't think of them off the top of my head.
But I'm not sure I'd say the Sinister Organisation one fits exactly for Mass Effect. Cerberus always felt like a non event to me. They don't really follow you, you stumble across them and it's all done and dusted within a couple of missions. Maybe they'll be back in ME2... along with more awkward sex scenes to make your eyes roll right out of your head. - tibisor, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2you break it, you buy it!
- ChileanGoD, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2I seriously think that if i ever see a dragons age box in a retail store I am going to punch it in the face.
- Beatmiser, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2I'm playing the Human Noble Campaign right now, and so far it does have a bit of a cliched edge to it, however that said, the writing within the cliches is good enough that I feel fully immersed so I'm not really too bothered by whatever is being perceived in Origins. All in all cliche or no this is the best game I've picked up in a long time.
(Now just get rid of the damn wallpaper on the site Digg- I love the game but come on this is freaking horrible). - nepidae, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2how is ***** up the layout of a site i visit every day "smart"? Hell this basically negated about 3 peoples recommendations to buy the game. I may buy it, but now I will probably wait for a 1/2 off day on steam if I haven't forgotten about the game by then.
- stubear, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2While I agree for the most part with this "article", their games are a lot of fun, though a second or third run through needs to wait about a year before attempting, the names of the characters in Jade Empire were absolutely, without a doubt, the best game names EVER.
- SpazAttack5000, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Me me me me me me!
- Spandia, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2Your perception of irony is seriously at fault.
- medlakeguy, on 11/09/2009, -1/+3I'm afraid my computer won't be able to handle it.
- GregLoire, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2You weren't going to buy it anyway.
- greggerm, on 11/09/2009, -0/+2<----- STOPPIT!!! ------>
- DarkHornet, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Bioware may make great RPGs, and I'm loving Dragon Age, but.. on top of the cliche story and character elements that seem to come with every RPG (Bioware isn't the only company using this format), there is also a lot of forced, unnatural dialogue in the early parts of the game.
Specifically, they fall into the trap of having the characters explain to you what's going on like you just had amnesia. There are always more subtle ways to give the player early information, especially when you rely on something like the codex from both Mass Effect and Dragon Age for much of the universe lore, anyway. - ProtocolDroid, on 11/09/2009, -1/+2Because it's turned the comments section into a tiny little column. Intrusive? I don't know. ***** annoying? Very much so.
- nepidae, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1This is actually the biggest reason why I am pissed. BioWare/Black Isle is sweet, and to associate with this ***** just tarnishes their name.
- SolInvictus, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Sure. It'd be way too long, though. FF8 and FF12 have the same basic story structure. FF12 and FF7 likewise share the same initial story.
- Elranzer, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Spikey-haired teenager leads a gang of unlikely heroes made up entirely of anime clichés against a recently-awakened ancient evil?
- Orbital101, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Kinda funny, too, considering how many Digg stories talk about how much Myspace sucks.
- Elranzer, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Many of us are in the same boat. I don't want to pay monthly to play KoToR 3.
I feel the same way about Final Fantasy XIV. I hate all MMORPGs. - nepidae, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1thats what it reminds me of, thank you. and grats digg for evoking that response. though perhaps you should hire some QA folk.
- ChuckDees, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1Oh like they couldn't make a cliche Squaresoft chart?
Main hero has memory loss and is a clone/ghost blah blah blah......... - fadeddragon, on 11/09/2009, -0/+1http://digg.com/mods/How_to_remove_the_Digg_Dragon ...
I used mabsark's method and it removed the background. - TFindlay, on 11/15/2009, -0/+1Jade empire re uses some of the faces from KotOR
