joystiq.com — We knew it was coming. Any game that features little girls as an enemy was bound to eventually draw the attention of the mainstream media...

- aspec, on 10/10/2007, -9/+2Funny story, Mr. T went to England in an attempt to save them from themselves... teeth not withstanding.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -7/+18Thompsont can't touch this one legally.:
In the settlement, filed with Federal District Court Judge Cecilia Altonaga, Thompson has agreed that he:
1.) will not sue or threaten to sue to block sale or distribution of any game published by Take Two or its subsidiaries (i.e., Rockstar).
2.) will not communicate to Take Two or anyone doing business with T2 (like, say Wal-Mart) any accusation that the company committed any wrongdoing by selling its games. Thompson is not restricted from criticizing the content of T2 games, nor is he prevented from acting as counsel in lawsuits brought against Take Two by other parties
3.) will make any future contacts with T2 through its attorneys
For its part Take Two has agreed to dismiss the federal lawsuit and Thompson will drop his counterclaim. T2 has also agreed to drop the Bully contempt of court matter. There was to have been a hearing on the case tomorrow morning, and Thompson could potentially have been jailed if he were found to be in contempt by a Miami-Dade County judge.

- seneyr, on 10/10/2007, -1/+24Honestly can't say that I'm surprised. What's more surprising is that being a Boston paper, they didn't try to get Dr. Jenkins to comment. What's further surprising is the conspicuous lack of Jack Thompson here.
- Scynet, on 10/10/2007, -4/+1Hrmph, probably bribed by Hollywood. They're afraid of losing their position as the main entertainment creator to videogames, and willing to do anything to make the masses stay away from them.
- Salgat, on 10/10/2007, -3/+45Bring it on, more publicity to the game.
- oneoverzero, on 10/10/2007, -2/+3In this case, not all publicity is good publicity. If the game (and others) earns an AO rating because of a paper/study like this, then it will be really, really bad publicity.
- mattyice11, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9The game is already out...it's rated M.
- ngmcs8203, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4You're right, but it hasn't stopped them from changing ratings of released games in the past.
- MWeather, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3So you're saying they didn't know about killing little sister when they gave it that rating?
- ih8ualot, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3The ESRB rated BioShock M, all aware that the player has the capability to kill little girls. It's a very integral and necessary part of the game.
The ESRB rated San Andreas M, not aware that there was a hidden sex minigame. When the minigame was discovered, it warranted a new rating until that content was removed.
- ngmcs8203, on 10/10/2007, -1/+4You're right, but it hasn't stopped them from changing ratings of released games in the past.

- CaptMonkey, on 10/10/2007, -4/+83I've been saving them instead of killing them, myself. It's not because I'm a nice guy though, I just want the achievement points for saving them all. If it wasn't for that, I'd be cracking open some little sisters and ripping some slugs out.
- Pimpalicious316, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15*****, you mean there's an achievement for saving them all? i've been harvesting all game so i could get more ADAM. oh well, looks like another play-through for me.
- MrMuffMeat, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8You can get an achievement for killing them all too. I am harvesting them all my first time, and then I will go back through and save them all. I will also go through and mix and match to see if that produces a different ending.
- Pimpalicious316, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1well, i saved the very first one because that woman said to do it. but then when i saw how much more ADAM i got harvesting, i started doing that only. looks like 2 more play-throughs now.
- CZzyzx41, on 10/10/2007, -0/+28If you want more Adam, he says he's down. You can get ahold of him at (619) 426-1708.

- hollismb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8Yup. It's 100 points too.
- brufleth, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5There are two endings. One if you save them all and one if you've harvested any of them.
- gimlik, on 10/10/2007, -3/+3Can you confirm this? If so, post a link.
- ih8ualot, on 10/10/2007, -3/+0Yes, would you kindly produce a link?
Tee hee... - sldSquirrel, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I got the "good" ending after harvesting two and saving the rest. The ending depends on how many you harvest, but I'm not exactly sure how many you can harvest before you get the "bad" ending.
- mrkmrk, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Wikipedia's plot summary describes both endings.
- Kurisuku, on 10/10/2007, -7/+2I haven't been able to play the game yet -- I don't buy games until they're on sale / On ebay for under 50 -- But in a few months when I do get the game I'm pretty sure I'll be killing every last one of 'em. :)
- dazzy20034, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Ive been rescuing them aswell, did'nt know about the reward though....i will see the ending soon as am just coming upto the last level...
I think the rewards from that woman far outweight the big of extra adam anyway.....i mean for every 3 girls you rescue you get like 200 adam....plus other gifts....- TheNik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Plus the game's real ending is the savior one. :/
- jimmick, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0You get a prize if you rescue every little sister IN ONE LEVEL, not every 3 *whip crack*
- Pimpalicious316, on 10/10/2007, -1/+15*****, you mean there's an achievement for saving them all? i've been harvesting all game so i could get more ADAM. oh well, looks like another play-through for me.

Little Weed = Jail Time - Kurisuku, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25Well most these people writing their anti-game-violence articles used to also sit down and watch Sapranos with their 10 year olds back when it was on the air.
They don't want THEIR entertainment removed. They just want to get rid of the entertainment they don't understand.- apoc06, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6well said!
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2It's pathetic. "You have the ability to kill little girls, so you're testing the limits of the ultraviolent genre. IT doesn't matter that the game is purposely morally ambiguous." They just attack media they don't even bother to understand,
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -6/+35Alcohol = Ok
- Pxtl, on 10/10/2007, -1/+32Killing little kids and monsters that look like little kids are old hat in sci-fi/horror films. Think about Screamers, or Children of the Corn, etc. Bioshock just uses the same theme, and suddenly it's teh evil 'cause it's a game.
- RyanBlueThunder, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1That's because videogames are only meant for children! RIght? /I've been 'saving' all of the Little Sisters...SPOILER SPOILER: [the tonics and teddy bear ADAM gifts make up for the decreased ADAM]
- CannibalTom, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2well the movie industry is one of the most powerful lobbyists. I don't think I've ever heard of video game lobbyist. Face the truth, in your country, they lobbyists matter.
- mogus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1NO.
Movie violence=accepted, but CORRUPTING OUR YOUTH (and everyone else, for that matter)
video game violence= see movie violence.
The answer is not to make both acceptable, but to reject that which is debasing our society.- Aticper, on 10/10/2007, -1/+0Do you honestly believe that a previously sane person will magically transform into a demented serial killer as soon as they play a violent game?
Face it - a component of sanity is being able to distinguish between fantasy and reality. Even a ten year old has it. No person with this quality is going to confuse killing a fantasy creature in a videogame with killing a real person. If you're that screwed up, there's no help for you - videogame or no.
There is nothing wrong with violent videogame, so long as you understand that they are, in fact, videogames.

- 1jaxstate1, on 10/10/2007, -1/+190I've killed millions of people in video games, and I've yet to have the urge to kill in real life. These types of "it will make people more violent" arguments are just dumb.

- cderry, on 10/10/2007, -3/+4Millions, huh?
- Fr00sh, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Why is that so suprising?
- thugok, on 10/10/2007, -1/+5You have obviously never done an AE grind in an MMORPG. Millions is probably a conservative number.
- cderry, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Actually, I've been playing WoW for 2 years now. I've played several weekends of rep grinding, instances, and raiding. A million is a LOT and "millions" assumes more than 1 million.
- bumbletowne, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2no it's not. I also play wow. Some of us have mob type counters (really flippin old mod) that monitor our stats. In 14 days played: just under 200,000. Now do the math for 2 years....(which for me is 100 days played). This includes all the little critters and tiny one-hit bitches.
O and i'm pretty sure i nuked that one million mark at 12...with pokemon...

- MokeyAUS, on 10/10/2007, -2/+14I think gaming is only ever going to affect the people who have a problem anyway. For me it's stress relief, I've been playing violent games since I was little, and I'm a fairly non-violent person.
This is biggest fault of the media/Jack Thompson, they refuse to see the positives of violent gaming. The media lives on negativity, so the gaming world suffers.- cesig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3More correctly, it lives on fear.
- MokeyAUS, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Yes, you'd be very right there. Most of the planet watching fear and negativity every night. Slightly depressing really.
- cesig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+3More correctly, it lives on fear.
- lpmiller, on 10/10/2007, -1/+196if it wasn't for violent videogames, I'd be killing people on a fairly regular basis.
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21Actually, the drastic decrease in rapes over the past three decades has been attributed to the increased prevalence of pornography, so maybe you're on to something. I believe the ancient Greeks called it "catharsis".
- rarefied, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Care to cite this assertion?
- p0tent1al, on 10/10/2007, -1/+18It's not rocket science. A lot of people, when they are angry, listen to rap or rock music, or play video games. Playing GTA and shooting some ***** up can relieve the stress you may be feeling towards people in real life. I think it's quite the opposite that a lot of people would have you think. Video Games and music curb violence, not the other way around. Same for what Urusai was talking about.
- Optimaximal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+12But guns don't kill people, rappers do!
- cathars1s, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1decrease in rape has been attributed to a variety of things. In Freakonomics, it's attributed to more abortions. Many attribute it to more surveilance cameras. Some say cell phones. Point is, porn is far from the best explanation available.
- rarefied, on 10/10/2007, -2/+6Care to cite this assertion?
- bumbletowne, on 10/10/2007, -7/+1sorry, no. That is attributed to cell phones. I don't know where you went to forensic school....but yeah decrease in serial murder successive kills and rape is due to the use and prevalence of cell phones. That was like in Survey of Forensics 101...which i took, getting a degree in Forensic Biology
- supersaw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1i bet mike tyson wishes he knew how to use a cell phone
- Urusai, on 10/10/2007, -4/+21Actually, the drastic decrease in rapes over the past three decades has been attributed to the increased prevalence of pornography, so maybe you're on to something. I believe the ancient Greeks called it "catharsis".

- Ayavaron, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2"Live every day like it's shark week."
- fucter, on 10/10/2007, -21/+4well, if you dont kill them you get an ending of bliss, if you kill at least 1, your ending is that you hijack a submarine. other than that, it makes no difference in the actual game. you also dont see anything whether you harvest or rescue.
- bluezinc, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3DAMMIT, DONT TELL US!! IT JUST CAME OUT FOR ***** SAKE!
- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -2/+1Spoiler alert.
- XHashmeerX, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0***** great....I totally just didn't read that...i hope I didn't really comprehend what I just wrote.
Not for nothing, you were probably the same ***** that didn't want Harry Potter spoiled for you.
And half of you now bitching about being spoiled, were probably trying to spoil Harry Potter for everybody else. ***** all you.
- thoughtudied999, on 10/10/2007, -0/+34Oh my god...
After playing the game through once and harvesting all of the little sisters I can tell you, the game is most certainly NOT solely about that. Plus, the cut scene where you kill them for their adam is all suggestive. It does not actually show them being killed...- Rkoril, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, technically you are ripping open their belly and ripping the sea slug out that's attached to their stomach, but I don't think anyone would want to see that, or would they?
- supersaw, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1Why not we see worse ***** on the news
- ReCkLeSsX, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, you first see her, then you're about to attack, and when you regain visibility, you have a slug in your hand.
- Rkoril, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Well, technically you are ripping open their belly and ripping the sea slug out that's attached to their stomach, but I don't think anyone would want to see that, or would they?
- ohsoserial, on 10/10/2007, -0/+11They wouldn't make such a big deal about it if they bothered to know about the achievement for saving the Little Sisters. No self respecting XBox gamer would pass that up.
I haven't killed one yet. .... oh, but I want to. - MarrowMan, on 10/10/2007, -3/+8were the books Frankenstein or Dracula any less violent 100 years ago? They were just as readily available as games are today, I think our great grand parents did okay, and didn't turn into raging sociopaths. What we view as entertainment always comes under fire if it isn't considered "normal" by the mainstream. I say ***** them, kill the lil brats, have fun, it's a game for crying out loud.

- vhold, on 10/10/2007, -1/+9It doesn't even show it when you kill them. They get frightened right before it happens, so I can see how that would really offend extremely sensible people, but erm, they are totally fine with all the freaky insane mutated people bashing each other with pipes and clawing each others' guts out?
- PixelCloud, on 10/10/2007, -1/+1These scenes are SUPPOSE to make you feel scared and not knowing what to do. That is the what the developers intended. Good job bioware

- frsrblch, on 10/10/2007, -1/+3Well, it's clear that they haven't played the game, but I guess that being informed comes after making sensationalist headlines on their list of priorities.
I started off by saving the first one. That attitude lasted until I got to the Gatherers Garden and saw how far that 80 ADAM could get me. Next time through though, I'll do it the hard way and save them.- vhold, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6*SPOILER*
The woman who asks you to spare them occasionally rewards you with 200 adam, amongst other things, if you save them.- xtmno3, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4MORE SPOILER:

- kidsix, on 10/10/2007, -1/+47from doom to half-life to gears of war to bioshock, i've "killed" thousands. tens of thousands, maybe. but in real life i am a total pacifist. i am the guy who catches the moths and lets them go outside. the point that is lost on many is that those who "get it", like me and like many of you, do not correlate what happens in a game to real life.
how come it is only the killing that the nutjobs emulate? how come those who say GTA pushed them to kill don't also think that they can fall off a ten story building and then just magically appear at outside the hospital all fine and dandy? that is the part that escapes me. if you are picking and choosing which parts of the violent games you confuse with reality, then you are just a liar looking for an excuse so you don't have to own up to your crimes.- GMorgan, on 10/10/2007, -1/+16You let moths go? I mean the freaky things deserve nothing less than death. I've had many a night, grabbing my pump action shotgun and manically chasing moths around town. - LilJimmyNordin, on 10/10/2007, -0/+13Shotgun? Pussy. Real men use the wrench on a moth.
- cesig, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4People who aren't criminals also use violent games as excuses so they don't have to own up to their incompetence as parents, leaders, neighbors, etc.

- daridave, on 10/10/2007, -0/+25Oh, come the ***** on. Me and my friends used to decapitate our sister's Barbies all the time to just piss them off, but we never and will never hurt a lady in our life. Again, if someone is to be psychologically affected by this game, then he shouldn't be playing ANYTHING in the first place. I can't stand these stupid attacks in video games anymore... it's just ridiculous!!!

- jason469, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2You can never win with the tight-wad mainstream. We should have be able to see what actually happens vs the screen going black if we were going to get this much BS from the media.
- AndyVenus, on 10/10/2007, -2/+2If I had a little sister, I'd probably be injecting myself and trying to throw bolts of electricity at her right now.
- MagicCake, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Yeah, I know I do that all the time. Mom gets pissed, though.
- Blizaine, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I can't bring myself to harvest one of them... Oh well, I think I get an achievement if I only save them the whole game.

- jason469, on 10/10/2007, -0/+7**** all of you, who are trying to tell us what happens if you play the game with/without killing the little sisters.
I haven't played it through and I bet I'm not the only one so STFU.- Zephik, on 10/10/2007, -0/+0Go buy the game before you read stories about it then tard! Jeez, your just like those harry potter fans, STOP WITH THE SPOILERS! I HAVEN'T READ THE BOOK YET!! ....then go buy the ***** book and read it before you read comments about the book, or in this case, the game. Duh? ...why are you reading the comments in the first place? I'm pretty sure your more intelligent that a monkey, so you should already know that there will be plenty of spoilers being talked about. Read the article, move along. Case closed.
- nutzngum, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1do what i did - don't read articles until you've finished the game. i did it one way, and now i'm going to play the game again and do it the *other* way.
great game, btw - i really didn't expect to enjoy it do much...with that much hype, i thought it would be impossible to enjoy it, but i did, immensely.
- hollismb, on 10/10/2007, -1/+60*MINOR SPOILER*
Not only (in the 360 version) do you get 100 achievement points at the end of the game for saving them all instead of harvesting, but you end up getting more Adam and rewards for saving them too. Harvesting them gives you 40 more Adam than saving them, but after every 3 Little Sisters you save, one of them leaves a teddy bear as a gift that contains 200 more Adam, some better ammunition (anti-personnel, armor, heat seeking rockets, etc.) and a Plasmid you can only get from the Little Sister (Hypnotize Big Daddy).
So, just like in real life, just because you can harvest a ten year old girl for genetic currency material, it doesn't necessarily mean you should. ;)- Optimaximal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+8> So, just like in real life, just because you can harvest a ten year old girl for genetic currency material, it doesn't necessarily mean you should. ;)

- nutzngum, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1...and it doesn't seem to save beyond the start of the big last scene...when I hit "continue", it started the final scene again...and trying 6 times to get it right was enough...
- Bove, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I get this paper, and saw it yesterday when I got home from work.

- datdamonfoo, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Watch any horror movie and kids are hunted and killed all the time. What's the difference? At least here you can save them.
- Phyltre, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Heh. And whatever you do, don't watch Grindhouse.
- bleonard, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Cool topic but a weak as F article.
- T3hl33tg33k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Heh heh. You just said Farticle.
- popstop785, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah but it is not like you can take a wrench and bash their head in like you can other enemies. It is supposed to be a decision making thing that adds to the intensity of the game. And by all means I read a note from the game producer hinting they are not even human to begin with.
and saying the Little Sisters are the main point in the game is sad. The ONLY game I have ever played that had a little girl as the "star" and "enemy" of the game was. . . anybody remember Alma? lol
P.S. Jackoff Thompson has already bashed the game. Talked crap when it was advertising during a WWF show. He said it was advertising to kids under 17 as tehy are teh only ones that watch WWF. Ironic though, it is ok for -17 kids to watch half naked men bash each other with chair and tables but it is not ok to mess with a video game. Jackoff Thompson needs to go get laid.- Optimaximal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Yeah, but the WWE has much deeper pockets than your average game developer. On top of advertising revenue, it's also heavily subsidised by the Class-C drugs industry!

- tech42er, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'll have to disagree with you there. I'd much rather see a short analysis of an idiotic, ignorant article and then a link to it than just the article.
- keepinithamsta, on 10/10/2007, -3/+2The source article is inaccurate.
"‘BioShock,' which is available for Xbox 360 and Windows PCs.."
It's not quite available for PC..- TotalHalibut, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Sure it is, go and buy it :/
- popstop785, on 10/10/2007, -3/+1Yes it is. You can get the PC version anywhere. Gamestop, Steam DL, etc etc.
- Optimaximal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Is that a digg (see what I did there) at the staggered release dates or the anti-piracy measures?
- shredswithpiks, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2he was making a comment on how the update/activation server was down for a little while and people who bought the game couldn't actually play it... I think.
comment went right over digg's collective head or something.
- airwalkery2k, on 10/10/2007, -0/+4Isn't that the entire point of the characters? To make people think twice about killing a monster? I thought the entire idea of the Little Sisters was to invoke a sense of 'shades of gray' attitude toward the decision to either kill an evil monster or save what seems to be a little girl, depending on your viewpoint.
- cloudyprison, on 10/10/2007, -0/+5Some morons can't see past that. OMG cute kitten, don't kill! But sir, its a hideous radioactive mutant MONSTER kitten!
- SonicPower, on 10/10/2007, -6/+3Well, if anyway has played the game, if you do decide to kill the little sisters, you end up with the worst ending.
- jferraro, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1I'm not sure why you have negative diggs. The good ending is way more fulfilling after you have put so much time into the game IMO. Anyone that doesn't want to spend time playing game, (though you are really missing out) can watch the endings on You Tube.
- napalmdaddy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+1Oh yes. Video games make me want to murder people.
Actually does the exact opposite for me: It calms and takes aggression out, making me not want to bitchslap my kids :) - potterboy, on 10/10/2007, -0/+15Next F.E.A.R. will be getting flack for portraying little girls in a negative and demonic fashion.
- Optimaximal, on 10/10/2007, -0/+6Aren't all little girls demons anyway? I remember my cousin being a complete little cow when she was young.

- Zetabyte, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2Saving these girls wouldn't have the same impact if you didn't have the option to kill them instead. It's a truly potent moral dilemma that accents the world of Rapture perfectly.
- tyns, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2Is it me or do those Little Sisters look an awful lot like Christina Ricci?

- dawgma, on 10/10/2007, -1/+2I've rescued every little sister so far. When you harvest a sister, you get 160 units of ADAM. When you rescue them you only get 80. However, for every 3 girls that you rescue, you get a gift of 200 ADAM from one of the caretakers of Rapture. So the difference between harvesting and rescuing is really only 40 ADAM. Plus you get other gifts like ammunition and a large chunk of change. I'm also hoping there might be other benefits to saving the girls every time.
- hollismb, on 10/10/2007, -0/+2You can only get the 'Hypnotize Big Daddy' plasmid that way too.
- politik192, on 10/10/2007, -2/+0Harvest the girl I say...gotta get me ADAM up!
