- eLuminx, on 05/09/2008, -15/+6YOu know they are going to destroy the greatness that is Bioshock. There is no way they can pull this off, especially not after having seen how the pirates movie turned out. I will be pessimistic about this one, 'till the product is finally released. Why can't they ever let a good thing be...
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/09/2008, -0/+19thats not true at all, the plot was highly cerebral. there is quite a bit that the film medium can offer the title, considering that they don't make alot of cheesy intentional 'first person shooter' camera shots like in the horrible doom movie.
- jgtg32a, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Am I the only person who didn't completely hate the FP part of that movie. They didn't do it right, it could have been better if
1) they had the gun up
2) a slight bounce in the camera to show running, they used a steady cam
3) don't shoot at stuff that we can't see, this was done a couple of times
Just make it more like that scene from Children of Men except don't put blood on camera, that damn near ruined the scene- Vindexus, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Blood on the camera ***** me off. I don't like to be reminded that what I'm seeing is on a screen. At least it faded away eventually.
- gutistg, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2It was a very expensive scene to shoot. The blood was an accident, and the budget didn't allow for another take.
Also, the scene is powerful, despite the blood. Don't be a nitpick. - bagboyrebel, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3It was an amazing scene in my opinion. The movie was worth paying to see for that scene alone.
- jgtg32a, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Am I the only person who didn't completely hate the FP part of that movie. They didn't do it right, it could have been better if
- spwpi10, on 05/09/2008, -3/+4I loved the pirates movies. All of them.
- zkwang, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10Buddy this is not gonna be some little or medium sized budget ... 2K Games retain the producer role and with the money flowing in from GTA IV ... this movie will get the budget it deserves to become something great.
- eLuminx, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Is not always about the budget a film has, is about staying the course with the story/game. The budget could be the biggest in film history, it doesnt necessarily mean is going to be the greatest movie in history.
All i am saying is, most of the time a great game is adapted into a film, is never good, is either mediocre or just OK. - chavarin, on 05/09/2008, -0/+0Well, the story ended in a couple of different ways, and not very tidily in either case. I see a LOT of room for improvement, and depending on who they get to adapt the "mood" of the game, a plot that is more inspired by the game than the actual game plot could be very good. The idea of bioshock was to incorporate the best elements of several game genre's, none them fully developed, including the story line. Together they made an excellent game, but without those other elements the story needs some serious working with, and beefing up if you ask me (which you didn't, I know.) And, considering the games environment, no-a big budget wouldn't necessarily make the game a good one, but without it I doubt it would succeed.
- eLuminx, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Is not always about the budget a film has, is about staying the course with the story/game. The budget could be the biggest in film history, it doesnt necessarily mean is going to be the greatest movie in history.

- Stuart750, on 05/09/2008, -1/+20That's exactly the problem movies have. A book or video game is your own first-hand experience, and a film gives you a third-person perspective on the story. They're not going to capture the same feel the Bioshock game had, especially the environment, which is what I found most captivating.
- fanclerks, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Damn you digg.... clicked the down thumb when I meant to digg you up.
I'm with you on the difficulty of adapting video games to movies, although it can be done if it's in the hands of someone who knows that their doing. Look at the first Resident Evil. It wasn't quite like the game, but it was still a great movie. I'm pretty sure they can still pull off the look and feel of the game, but of course, it won't be 100% exactly like the game was. Hell, at least Boll isn't directing it!- potofgravy, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Maybe you didn't see the same Resident Evil I saw.
- chavarin, on 05/09/2008, -2/+0Actually most books are not written in a first person perspective. It would be hard to write a book by using it: "You walked down the road. You noticed a rock and kicked it. It sailed across the street and a bum yelled at you for hitting him." And the relatively new first person shooter concept in games is not always embraced by people such as myself, who tend to become sea-sick after 5 minutes. Bio-shock was just too great to let that hinder me though.
Do you perhaps mean you are given more creative freedom to develop the world of books /games? Movies are limited in that they are one person's vision, and that vision rarely lives up to our own. I usually risk it though, because I love being back in the bioshock. It might be terrible but that's a chance I'll have to take.- TheInimitable, on 05/09/2008, -0/+7That's actually second person.
- bagboyrebel, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2choose your own adventure books?
- BenKenobi88, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1One of the most popular literary devices is to write the story from the perspective of one person, not knowing everything, only aware of what he or she is aware of...it's harder to do that for movies because we don't want to hear a narrative of one guy's thoughts, we like interaction and seeing everything.
- Melun91, on 05/10/2008, -0/+0Yeah, and autobiographies don't exist.
- fanclerks, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Damn you digg.... clicked the down thumb when I meant to digg you up.
- markbrown, on 05/09/2008, -8/+6It's Verbinski -- it shouldn't be bad.
- dagamer34, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5Did you SEE his last movie? Sooo Looonngg
- therightclique, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Long and completely nonsensical. I can't remember a single thing I saw in that movie.
- vlad43210, on 05/09/2008, -3/+2I'm going to get buried for this, but I *loved* PotC3. The thing is, Bioshock isn't exactly a Disney ride, so we'll see how Verbinski handles it.
- Pulch, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3You are going to get buried. Not because of your taste in movies, because you saying that makes it a self fulfilling prophecy.
- chadillak, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1"shouldn't" being the operative word in that sentence.
- dagamer34, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5Did you SEE his last movie? Sooo Looonngg

- bebop717, on 05/09/2008, -2/+19I saw a recent screentest, lets just say it needs more gore and less verbinski.
- Pulch, on 05/09/2008, -0/+12which I think is Russian for "bad dialog"
- svtspeed, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5I see what you did there....

- Terr01, on 05/09/2008, -3/+1I don't have a problem with that, myself, at least not since I read Atlas Shrugged at the advice of a friend, with no prior knowlege of Rand etc.

lets keep our fingers crossed guys, the director have done movies with wet environments... so thats a plus. - ItsMyWii, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1It's very fitting that the director's first name is Gore.
- OmEGa8943, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1you know they will

- BlackTye, on 05/09/2008, -7/+48Hold on...
Nope, it's not April.- Spudster, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1With Gore Verbinski and John Logan this looks... promising?
- Feep, on 05/09/2008, -3/+212I wonder. Will the title character harvest or spare the little sisters?
- bjs3171, on 05/09/2008, -1/+128He'll spare them...normally. but there will be some event in the plot that forces him to harvest them. that works to his advantage in order for him to get through whatever plot point it is, but then his character will go through a moral dilemma, and ultimately go back to sparing the little brats.
- ahmedb07, on 05/09/2008, -1/+59well said....Hollywood is so predictable.
- houndeyex, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5I agree. They've got to explore the "possible outcomes" in one run.
- mithrasinvictus, on 05/09/2008, -0/+31i think it more likely that another character will harvest and suffer the consequences.
- mattlreese, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5Even though we can predict what might happen I still will be there opening night.
- petebot, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1But then he won't get the "Little Sister Savior" achievement!
- Shadowgamers, on 05/09/2008, -0/+43There'll be two screenings, one for where they do, and one where they don't.
:V- biffen, on 05/09/2008, -7/+1THAT is a fantastic idea. Just like the game let the player choose, they could let the audience choose too.
- goonnoodles, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3Nah.
- Melun91, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1They will probably just have an alternate ending in a special edition dvd.
- petershultz, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Or available on the internet, where the characters drive off into the sunset broadcasting a radio message about humanity...
- biffen, on 05/09/2008, -7/+1THAT is a fantastic idea. Just like the game let the player choose, they could let the audience choose too.
- sodoh, on 05/09/2008, -0/+47Actually what will be more interesting is if like me 10 minutes into the movie the hero realises he can't die at all and just whacks the big daddys to death with a spanner, happily respawning over and over until it is done.
At least it can't be as bad as we think, Uwe Boll isn't directing it.- ShinMoses, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6When I first saw the article, that was my worst fear
- chavarin, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5But then he won't get the achievement on hard!
- Caffro, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6More achievement points if you spare !!
- mclewell, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5Better spare them, else will we get the bad ending.
- n0c0ntr0l, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2The bad ending is better for a film...
- mithrasinvictus, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1bad endings are good because, if there are enough of them, the good endings won't be as predictable.
- CTK14A, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Definitely better for a sequel.
- n0c0ntr0l, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2The bad ending is better for a film...
- drink409, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1He'll harvest 1 to see what it looks like but spare the rest to get the achievement points
- chubbstar, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2i really hope its the bad ending cuz im sick of happy-happy hollywood endings. plus then the sequel could be him running amok with and army of splicers in 60's new york.
- chillypacman, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1IIf it's like any other game based movie the more appropriate question is: will the title character have sex with the mermaids or not?
- bjs3171, on 05/09/2008, -1/+128He'll spare them...normally. but there will be some event in the plot that forces him to harvest them. that works to his advantage in order for him to get through whatever plot point it is, but then his character will go through a moral dilemma, and ultimately go back to sparing the little brats.
- Nerdman01, on 05/09/2008, -7/+119Oh my god! I just reallly hope they don't mess it up...

so... yey...- toekneebullard, on 05/09/2008, -0/+19Uwe would make a masterpiece out of it.
But it would take place int he desert rather than underwater, and it would be about zombies rather than splicers, and it would be related to the game by name only.- warcin, on 05/09/2008, -0/+8only using Uwe's definition of masterpiece witch hold no resemblance to how anyone else anywhere would define it.
- toekneebullard, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3I can't believe I didn't get buried into oblivion with that first sentence.
- toekneebullard, on 05/09/2008, -0/+19Uwe would make a masterpiece out of it.
- alukima, on 05/09/2008, -4/+72This is one of the few video games that I think would make a decent movie.
Actually Bio-shock is one out of three games I have played recently where I didn't feel like I was playing recycled garbage. Although it did scare the crap out of me a few times when I was playing it by myself. I ended up finishing it with every light in the house on.- bjs3171, on 05/09/2008, -11/+5I thought Half Life 2 was going to be a great movie. But then Clive Owen and that Black chick with the baby just got in a raft, sailed 10 feet, the big boat found them, and the story just ended, without the actual adventure. what a ***** waste.
- Pittance, on 05/09/2008, -1/+6Children of Men? Good movie albeit damn sad. Not even close to half life. You're missing the aliens and the fact that people didnt stop having babies in half life.
- PyroBlam, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6They did stop having babys in hl2, in hl2 ep1 at the end credits it is mentioned.
- Protoss, on 05/09/2008, -0/+7The Combine put up a supression field, thats why there were no kids in Half-Life 2. And when it was shut down at the end of Ep1, Dr. Kliener tells everyone to well...sex it up.
- Vindexus, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1I don't understand why people are digging you down, that was ***** hilarious.
- Pittance, on 05/09/2008, -1/+6Children of Men? Good movie albeit damn sad. Not even close to half life. You're missing the aliens and the fact that people didnt stop having babies in half life.
- Orion682, on 05/09/2008, -14/+9Too bad you WERE playing recycled garbage. It was called System Shock 2 the first time around. It was also a better game the first time around...
- SeriousMite, on 05/09/2008, -5/+4Totally agree. Bioshock is a worse game in every way except graphics. I found it almost as big a disappointment as Invisible War.
- neko, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2I wouldn't go as far as to call it garbage, though it can't really come close to System Shock. Even graphically - at least System Shock's FOV wasn't screwed up so you felt you were wearing binoculars through the whole game, and they managed to get mouse sensitivity right. Oh, and inventory management that wasn't dumbed down. And death was something to be avoided (at least until you found and activated the Quantum Entanglement Device for that level =p)
Still, a nice enough game, provided you don't attempt to compare it to the classics. - Terr01, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Random plug: Deus Ex!
Similar style of being realy heavy on tactical options, although having a stronger storyline than System Shock 2 with less emphasis on survival horror. (And character didn't have axeblades for faces.) - Orion682, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2I love how I'm being dugg down but all the comments people bothered to leave, by and large, agree with me.
And perhaps garbage was too strong a word. It wasn't a bad game, it was just bad compared to SS2. The lack of any penalty for death was what upset me the most...
And I get the feeling that most of the people who dugg me down never even played/heard of SS2, and just figure "ZOMG BIOSHOCK IS THE BEST GAME EVARR BECAUSE I PLAYD IT ON MA XBOX"
People need to learn their gaming history...- chavarin, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1If you use the vita chamber on hard, you won't get an achievement. For me, that was a STIFF penalty.
- Orion682, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1... Go play a real ***** game...
- petebot, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1Maybe people are digging you down because you're an arrogant douche.
- chavarin, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1If you use the vita chamber on hard, you won't get an achievement. For me, that was a STIFF penalty.
- alukima, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3I am so very sorry I could never afford a PC decent enough to play PC games. (Please dont tell me how cheap they were/are, my family couldnt even afford the internet for a long time.) But since it offends you so that I dont know the history of gaming let me take time away from actually having fun playing games so I can read articles and reviews of these "historical games" and be a pompous jerk like you.
Then I can blame being dugg down on others lack of knowledge. Not the fact that I am being a jerk.- Orion682, on 05/12/2008, -1/+1So because you couldn't afford it then you can't spend 5 bucks on it now to play it? I played both Deus Ex and SS2 long after they were "new" for the same reason, but it let me appreciate good gameplay because in spite of the now dated graphics, those games were masterpieces.
I never said you can never have fun playing games, or that BioShock wasn't fun. I said that compared to System Shock 2, it's a pale imitation: dumbed and watered down to make it more appealing to the masses who know nothing about depth in gaming. Yes the story was good, yes the environment was amazing, but all of this still winds up heavily ripping off System Shock 2. It seems the formula for the game was to convert cyberpunk to steampunk + a hefty dose of simplification and hope that no one remembers its predecessor which was better in every way except graphics.
And unlike Bioshock, which gives away 90% of the plot in the first 10 minutes (listen closely to, I believe, the second recording, to what the mutant storming the party says), System Shock 2 hit you with the plot twist so hard, and so unexpectedly that you felt as if you might just sue them for whiplash.
So if you want to play BioShock and enjoy it, go ahead. But I feel you have no right to say how good a game it is without the context. And that context is System Shock 2.

- ozroy, on 05/09/2008, -1/+12Deus Ex is the game I think would make a fantastic movie. Although this could be good too.
- rainmanbk, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6YES, I loved the first game in the series! Totally agree with you.
- jgtg32a, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1would have to be a rather long movie or multiple movies, maybe an HBO miniseries would be good also.
- Terr01, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Yeah, I think trying to compress it into a single movie would be crap. A single movie would either have to junk huge areas of plot, leaving holes, or else would needs gratuitious amounts of spontaneous exposition by characters.
- Falc, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10how about Half-Life starring Ed Norton as Gordon Freeman, Olivia Munn as Alyx Vance and Robert Guillaume as Dr. Eli Vance (of course)

- fuzzmeister, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Halo would also work, the game is basically a movie already. Peter Jackson needs to get on that. And if they could do a Half-Life movie where Gordon being silent was clever/interesting, maybe.
- maddogz433, on 05/10/2008, -0/+0i'm telling you guys, a real, solid Pokemon movie, like real people, and a good script, would bring Pokemon back to the Future. seriously.
- bjs3171, on 05/09/2008, -11/+5I thought Half Life 2 was going to be a great movie. But then Clive Owen and that Black chick with the baby just got in a raft, sailed 10 feet, the big boat found them, and the story just ended, without the actual adventure. what a ***** waste.
- mentallyinhell, on 05/09/2008, -4/+21It'll make for a great film. But I still just want to see a big daddy.

- bagboyrebel, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1So the movie retroactively makes the game bad? It's actually pretty simple, if you like the move then good for you, if you don't like it then ignore it.
- MalkyMalc, on 05/09/2008, -0/+7Outstanding, that's some quality talent making this movie. If their hearts are in it then this could be the first good game-movie film.
- chavarin, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4i THINK you're forgetting Super Mario Brothers, with John Leguizamo.
- weeman43302, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1God I *love* that movie

- logicalnoise, on 05/09/2008, -0/+9better choice would have been Marc Caro and Jean-Pierre Jeunet(city of lost children, Delicatessen). But Gore has chops too.
- ozzilee, on 05/09/2008, -3/+1Yeah, because the last time Jean-Pierre Jeunet did an American film it turned out so well...
- Coffeedemon, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1He didn't have much say in Alien 4. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. With real control he would be great. Don't think he and Caro work together anymore though.
- logicalnoise, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1alien 4 is still better than alien 3 and IMO wasn't even that bad.
- Fixhotep, on 05/09/2008, -0/+0I liked Alien3, actually. Recently I saw the directors cut for the first time and wow, it's a much better film. I was very impressed with the entire Alien box set.
- scojerroc, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3Jeunet would kick ass at this. Most of his movies have a compatible flavour already.
- beastie99, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1YES! I could also see Terry Gilliam directing it....think BRAZIL.
- ozzilee, on 05/09/2008, -3/+1Yeah, because the last time Jean-Pierre Jeunet did an American film it turned out so well...
- dagnabbit, on 05/09/2008, -4/+51As AskaNinja said about the director's last movie (Pirates of the Caribbean), hopefully there will be a lot more gore, and a whole lot less verbinski.
- neferiousrich, on 05/09/2008, -0/+18which is russian for "bad dialog"
- follower64, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5And hopefully, no body parts will have storylines.
- chavarin, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1What was so wrong with Pirates? They were kid's movies and they were damn good ones, or at least I enjoyed watching them with my brothers. They were funny.
- follower64, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3The first one was good, the second one was 'What the hell?", and the third one was "I've been raped".
- drlha, on 05/09/2008, -10/+5Gore Verbinski and John Logan are both talentless hacks, but they have proven that they can bring in the big bucks, so I expect this will at least make money. Logan I'm most worried about, this is the guy who basically killed the ST:TNG film franchise with the utterly ***** entirely due to the script Nemesis.
- noots, on 05/09/2008, -4/+11sorry, but Gladiator ***** rocked. +1 John Logan.

- ozzilee, on 05/09/2008, -3/+11Verbinski a talentless hack? Please. He's a decent director. Mouse Hunt was pretty damn good. Remember when the first Pirates came out? Zero expectations. He took what should have been a throwaway Disney money-grab and turned it into a genuine Film. Sure, the other two Pirates movies were trash, but Verbinski's got genuine talent. He's no rock star, but he's certainly not a talentless hack.
- Frogee, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1It could have used a lot more Gore, and a lot less Verbinski.

- ortucis, on 05/09/2008, -10/+3Bioshock.. only the unique setting (not that unique) and few monsters make this game work. Other than that, pretty average gameplay and story. They cannot screw this one up since most people will just want the right 'look' for the movie first.

- Eslamicolt3, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2pure awesome
- mrtastycakes, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Here's hoping that the BioShock movie will serve as an antidote to the Atlas Shrugged movie. I'm still amazed that anyone would make an Atlas Shrugged movie. The book was a waste of paper and film is more expensive. - zephyr42, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6They could turn the whole idea in to a trilogy, and honestly, that Idea sounds fantastic. There's too much backstory that they'd have to do cutbacks to explain everything.

- sodoh, on 05/09/2008, -6/+1The game had great graphics, reasonably good atmosphere and ok'ish storyline. But the game itself was horribly flawed. It was like playing Quake on god mode. Sure it was scary, but the fact you couldn't die killed the *challenge*.
- vlad43210, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2I completely disagree. Unless you just enjoyed endless respawns and running around with no ammo/Adam, you had to put some effort into the game. It wasn't Ninja Gaiden (i.e. in terms of difficulty), but it wasn't easy either.
- sodoh, on 05/12/2008, -0/+1You didn't have to put any effort into the game at all. By the time I reached level 2 and realized that I couldn't actually die, by the time I hit the next level I was maxed out on my ammo. All you had to do hit everything with the spanner and respawn.

- zzz@tkz, on 05/09/2008, -2/+115 hours? I beat it in under 6 on normal or whatever. Seriously short game, glad I borrowed it.
- Jimmeeee, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2Did you listen to any of the cassette recordings, dialog, or story? Because if you played it with the intent of beating it, you missed the point. The point is to immerse yourself in the plot of the game.
- zzz@tkz, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1Yes I did, and it was still short.

- rrc589, on 05/09/2008, -5/+4I actually loved the setting and the premise. The story kept me interested but only in the beginning. I thought it got incredibly stale towards the end of the game and the final boss battle was a joke.
Just my opinion. I know I'm in the minority.- demiurgency, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4No. I agree. I think the story is pure genius the first 80%, and the last 20% is blech. I won't post spoilers about what caused the sudden turn, but everyone who's finished the game probably knows what I'm talking about.
Not completely unlike System Shock 2 actually. - centran, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4The ending... endings where changed in the "last hour". They where not happy with being pushed in that direction and felt they could have made it a lot better if given more time.
- vlad43210, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1See, I really don't get that. I *loved* the ending. I guess I went in with low expectations because every reviewer out there was all like, "yeah, but the ending SUCKS, boo hoo," so I thought it was going to be something really horrible. It's not. It's a satisfying conclusion to a good story that fits with the paranoid mood of the game.

- getbusyliving, on 05/09/2008, -3/+2Hopefully they can get the aiming right on the PC version this time
edit: DAMN should have RTFA- ComradeGoby, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Or the title....

- PurpleDingo, on 05/09/2008, -1/+14So, we're going to see an outrageous spectacle, a bastardized story, and an inappropriately famous lead who's never played the game. yay.
- bmcnally, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Like Hitman . . .
Damn it, Vin Diesel was born to play that part.

- groone, on 05/09/2008, -4/+1I hope they make it available on the torrent over the etherweb.
- grantino9, on 05/09/2008, -5/+1Isn't free will the point of the whole "twist" in Bioshock? I just don't see how this works outside of a first person video game setting with all the objectives and such. Mr. Verbinski, would you kindly not make this movie?
A man chooses, a slave obeys.- Cruelapollo, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2No, the game was actually pretty damn linear. Was still great though.
- ultraJesus, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1You don't get it. The linearity of the game is not what it up for debate, it is how the realization that the whole time up to this point, every decision that you think is your own has actually been spoon fed for you. Doing this in a movie wouldn't make sense.
- bagboyrebel, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Well you watch the main character doing things that appear to be of his own will and then you find out that someone else is controlling him. I don't see what's so hard about that.
