- inactive, on 12/18/2007, -9/+194buried for not linking to the original ap story, you cocksucking joystiq *****
- GeekSwag, on 12/18/2007, -1/+74For a while I've been thinking that Digg should implement a system whereby the users could recommend an alternate link for a submission.
So lets say this submission makes the front page:
1) Joystiq gets buku hits which = $$$
2) Users see it's nothing but blog spam
3) Users start submitting an "alternate link" for the article
4) The article now redirects to the popular link as opposed to the original.
5) Blog spam goes away. - jtbndy, on 12/18/2007, -13/+71I actually thought Crysis should be most overrated game of the year.
- Superperson, on 12/18/2007, -2/+49BLOG SPAM!
- truspector, on 12/18/2007, -16/+58Bioshock game of the year?!?!?! No way, the Sony Defense Force told me it was only a 5/10. MS must be out buying review scores again. :(
/sarcasm - totorototoro, on 12/18/2007, -3/+40I'm tempted to bust out my son's Xbox360 from under the tree to play this game right now :(
- sinizuh, on 12/18/2007, -0/+29Well, look at that. Not everyone can agree on a Game of the Year. Is that a bad thing or a good thing that there has been multiple great games that have come out in 2007?
- MaynardJK, on 12/18/2007, -6/+30Buried for saying AC was better than Bioshock. That is blasphemy.
- markperia, on 12/18/2007, -0/+22Isn't it fun to buy your kids something that you would probably enjoy more? Its like being selfish without all the guilt.
- MacTyler, on 12/18/2007, -2/+22OMG dad are you serious!?
- KingGoonie, on 12/18/2007, -16/+36Halo 3... just like Halo before it (never played single player Halo 2) is VERY VERY VERY VERY OVERRATED. They are both good games... not great... AND the multiplayer aspect of all part 2 and part 3? Again... its ok... good but by no means great. COD4 multiplayer blows it away.
- santiago1, on 12/18/2007, -4/+24 Apparently the reviewers haven't yet played it to the end...

In 2007, a bounty of actual games finally mattered more than nerdy debates over each system's technological merits. And for the first time since Pong bounced its way into our living rooms, it seems as if video games are again being relished by all sorts of folks.
That retired couple next door? They're probably better than you at Wii Sports.
Here's our annual look at the best and worst in video games, 2007 edition.
------ BEST GAME: "BioShock." A first-person shooter turned morality play, a thinking person's action game, a piece of electronic fiction with a soul. There are many positive ways to describe this gripping game and they're all true. There's just nothing else like this eerie vision of an undersea social experiment gone horribly wrong. Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows PC, $59.99, Rated M.
------ BEST DEAL: The Orange Box. For $59.99, the innovators at Valve Corp. have provided one of the best bargains in 2007. You get five games, and all of them are excellent. "Portal," in particular, seems destined for legendary status, having spawned a cottage industry for plush companion cubes. (If you don't know what that means, you're really missing out). Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Windows PC, $59.99, Rated T through M.
------ BEST GAME THAT INVOLVES GETTING OFF THE SOFA: "Rock Band." Close the windows, lock the doors and warn the neighbors before you blare the volume. "Rock Band" elevates music rhythm games to arena-filling levels in a game that gets better the more people there are. For a true rocking experience you'll at least need two guitars -- lead and bass -- plus a drummer and a singer to belt out the dozens of tunes. Groupies are optional.
------ WORST TREND: The annual holiday video game deluge. Please, video game makers, you're only hurting your most loyal fans here. We spend all year with hardly anything new to play, then October rolls around and it's like an avalanche. Suddenly, we're faced with tough decisions about which of the dozens of good games we can actually afford to buy. Why not release more of these gems in the winter, spring or summer doldrums, when we're really looking for -- and more able to afford -- something new?
------ MOST TIRING CONTROVERSY. "Manhunt 2." OK people, it seems pretty obvious that "Manhunt 2" is not a game for the kiddies. So why all the uproar? Ratings issues aside, if a game that lets you perform execution moves is a turnoff, change the channel. Parents have a tough job keeping content like this away from their children, but it's ultimately part of the responsibility. And this game is no more graphic than any number of R-rated movies I've seen -- except they aren't being altered to appeal to industry ratings groups.
------ BEST (AND WORST) TREND: First person shooters were back in a big way this year. From the sublime ("BioShock") to the visually stunning ("Crysis"), there are more ways to wield weapons in convincing three-dimensional worlds than ever before. That's the good news, particularly for console owners. PC owners, however, are going to need beefy systems costing many thousands of dollars to make these gorgeous games playable.
------ MOST OVERRATED GAME: "Halo 3." Yes, I went there. And I'm not saying "Halo 3" is bad. It's a decent game, with some good fighting and excellent online modes, no doubt. But don't believe Microsoft Corp.'s marketing and PR hype machine. Halo 3 changes nothing about video games. "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" has a more interesting multiplayer component. And "Halo 3's" single-player story is baffling and leaves this supposedly epic saga feeling somewhat incomplete.
------ BEST IDEA FOR A GAME GONE HORRIBLY WRONG. "Lair." Seriously, this PlayStation 3 game looks so awesome yet plays so horribly, it's like a sick joke from the developers. You're supposed to use the PS3's motion-sensitive controller to pilot your very own fire-breathing, butt-kicking dragon. Unfortunately, moving the controller left to move your dragon left, for example, is fairly impossible. Don't even get me started on 180-degree turns. I'm sure with practice you'll gain some semblance of control, but most people will give up in frustration long before they ever reach that point.
------ MOST FRUSTRATING DELAYS: If I can't get my hands on blockbusters like "Metal Gear Solid IV: Guns of the Patriots," "Spore" or "Grand Theft Auto IV" soon, I think I'm going to lose it. Production delays are common in the games industry, and they're generally a good thing in the long run. The extra time only makes for a better, hopefully bug-free, gaming experience. But we've been hearing about these titles for like, ever, and I'm frankly getting very impatient.
Here's hoping all these games become a reality in 2008.
(Copyright ©2007 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.) - latova, on 12/18/2007, -5/+21"Overrated" is typically something like Killzone, which is hyped up to be the Halo Killer but instead gets mediocre reviews. Something isn't overrated just because YOU don't like it but everyone else does, its overrated when its hyped up and everyone doesn't like it.
If all of you don't buy games like Halo and Bioshock you think they're overrated, what the hell do you buy then? Little pink pony adventures? - graciouspatty, on 12/18/2007, -0/+13Ok, maybe halo 3 isn't the best game of the year. But BioShock certainly isn't either.
- superkendall, on 12/18/2007, -1/+14No kidding, it was more toward the end when I became disappointed with the story.
- KingGoonie, on 12/18/2007, -6/+18i bought Bioshock as my first 360 game a few weeks ago... but honestly haven't really been playing it much as COD4 and Galaxy been getting all my game time... so on that alone its not my game of year. Galaxy is, then COD4... Maybe when I get a little further into it it will start gripping me more, but right now its a really fun game, I don't know if I would say great yet (I'm right at the part where you finish killing your first big daddy and then go to this new part where he tells you in beginning to save his family somewhere in that area... )
- santasing, on 12/18/2007, -4/+16While you can disagree, I really don't think Bioshock is a great game. Graphics are good, but I was expecting more after the media hysteria about having a moral choice in the game. For me, it was an ok game, been there done that. The puzzle solving was boring, and way too much micromanagement of ammo etc.
- totorototoro, on 12/18/2007, -0/+12I prefer to think of it as a gift that keeps on giving :p
- skyfire1, on 12/18/2007, -1/+12Ron Paul playing Halo on the iPhone.
- j4nj1m3n3z, on 12/18/2007, -0/+11I think they forgot Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the most frustrating delays category....
- inactive, on 12/18/2007, -6/+17Bioshock was good, but frankly I didnt think it was that good. The story was awsome, but the game had some drawbacks. No multiplayer is a huge one. It was also 100% linear, you really couldnt make any choices that affected the story outside of the little sisters. The variaty of bad guys seem limited too, after about the 3rd stage you have pretty much seen all of them.
I loved the game, but there were a ton of great games this year. I wouldnt pick Halo 3 as game of the year, but I dont think it was Bioshock either. I would still pick H3 over BS because after you beat BS, there isnt a huge incentive to go back and find new things. The Halo 3 Multiplayer at least keeps things fresh.
Game of the year for me is CoD4. That had a great single player and some of the best multiplayer in a while. - inactive, on 12/18/2007, -1/+11One of these days, when I get a better PC, I'm gonna have to give Bioshock a try. Right now, the Orange Box is my current favorite game of the year, because several months later, I still can't put it down.
- Klarth, on 12/18/2007, -1/+11And then a thousand 4channers register and all stories become links to this documentary: http://youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU
- ChrisWalkr, on 12/18/2007, -1/+11And Portal?
- Bing11, on 12/18/2007, -17/+26Bioshock? Riiight... that was one epic ending, let me tell you.
I'm going to have to go with Galaxy, and it seems I'm not the only one here. Besides, it also appeals to many other people (like the sort who DON'T visit Digg).
Mario takes it this year, sorry AP/Joystiq/anyone-else-giving-Bioshock-or-Halo3-a-blowjob. - Hawkeye05, on 12/18/2007, -1/+10Buried for being sensitive to language, this is the internet ya stupid Bastard!

- Hobbes24, on 12/18/2007, -2/+10...but it's so shiny...
- Dauragon88, on 12/18/2007, -3/+11Bioshock is pretty awesome, but its not that damn great. It also kind of annoys me that Halo 3 catches all this flack for being very sequel-like and not deviating as much from Halo 2, but most of those people either aren't old enough, or just plain dont remember System Shock, or System Shock 2. If you played those games, you would know that Bioshock is just those games with prettier graphics, just like Halo 3.
The only difference is that there was enough time between those games for people to forget all about them and then go "OMG BIOSHOCK IS THE MOST REVOLUTIONARY GAME EVER D:" - mwalker05, on 12/18/2007, -0/+8i guess only first person shooters came out this year
- orca94, on 12/18/2007, -2/+10UT3 better than Bioshock are you mad?
- Bara, on 12/18/2007, -3/+11I didn't realize that a game can be judged entirely based only on its ending. If that were the case, I guess Super Mario 64 was one of the worst games on the 64.... I mean come on, a cake!?
- retrovertigo, on 12/18/2007, -4/+11Absolutely. With all the the technical hype around the game, it's shocking (but yet not all that surprising) that it didn't sell well. What person wants to buy an Enterprise-Server Powered machine just to run a game that really isn't all that great. Cool physics and all, but c'mon. Good physics does not a good game make... or something yoda-like.
- crackedplastic, on 12/18/2007, -0/+7Yeah, a lot of people suggested something similar to that, but it'll never happen.
Seems like a big mission for Digg (see the recent survey questions) is to attempt to promote "neat, new" sites. The problem is that these sites simply repost information that's already out there. Sites like Joystiq (and Engadget, Gizmodo, etc.) depend on rehashing information from other sites (their "original" content is very minimal).
Propeller/Netscape actually has some sort of link editing to reflect the source material (not sure, since I don't visit it). Yeah, Propeller is lame since it's a Digg ripoff, but having this sort of functionality would be great for Digg. - crackedplastic, on 12/18/2007, -0/+7Seriously. If you're on a "news collector" site, LINK TO THE SOURCE rather than another "news collector" site. Damn.
- ninjasenses, on 12/18/2007, -1/+8I rented bioshock just because of everyone saying it was so good, only to be let down. Beat it in a week, definatley worth the 10$ to rent, but replayability is 0. halo 3 and cod 4 are way better investments than this game because of the replayabilty, and to me that makes those games way better than bioshock.
- Hobbes24, on 12/18/2007, -1/+8yea, but that would make the entire joystiq article retarted...oh wait
- Frostman3D, on 12/18/2007, -4/+11Looks like somebody misspelled Mario Galaxy.
- latova, on 12/18/2007, -2/+9I own all of the Halo games. Halo 3 is a good game. It's not a bad game, but its not a great game either. Halo 3 is probably a must-own by any shooter fan, but it is not game of the year material. While it is a good shooter, is it not revolutionary by any means.
- inactive, on 12/18/2007, -0/+6It's good for people at work
- spect3r, on 12/18/2007, -1/+7Good for Bioshock. It was a solid game. Maybe a lame ending, but through and through it was quite enjoyable.
TF2 or Portal would have been nice to see as well. Valve really stepped it up with those two. - JasonCox, on 12/18/2007, -3/+9The game was good but it sure as heck wasnt GOTY matireal.
- bmdubya, on 12/18/2007, -9/+15I agree with that story, especially Halo 3. I had it for a month, then it got old. So many little whinny bitches online make it not fun at all. I traded it in to get Call of Duty 4. It has a better single player, but the multiplayer is where it shines. I love the ranking system a helluva lot better on Call of Duty 4. Plus when younger kids find out it is more challenging because there are no shields, it makes the online community so much better. The AP should add Call of Duty 4 on their list for best multiplayer of the year.
- hjdutch, on 12/19/2007, -0/+6PORTAL was best game of the year
- dansmeek, on 12/18/2007, -2/+8the micromanagement of ammo is what really annoyed me here. that and, the enemies get tougher without any real advanced AI. i kept hearing about the game AI and how it was revolutionary.... my ass. if you call occasionally going to a health station when you are low on health (or running away), or dissapearing after a quick fire, or distinguishing between the human opponent and other enemies.... well, thats the extent. and enemies only get tougher because 4/5 through the game they suddenly get 300% stronger and 500% more powerful.
and the turrets. THE TURRETS. explain to me how a machine can know how to fire at one person (the player) but not at another person (the crazy girl who has firey arms). bleh.
still better than a lot of games AI, but not revolutionary by any means. and i really would have loved this game more if they allowed us to have more ammo. - Chirp08, on 12/18/2007, -1/+7Don't you mean Assassins Creed?
- Jordan117, on 12/18/2007, -3/+9I'm so sick of people ***** on Halo 3 for being "overhyped". Hype has no reflection on the game itself, just on Microsoft's marketing department.
Also, it is NOT just Halo 2 with better graphics. Did Halo 2 have saved films? Equipment? File sharing? Forge? Four player online co-op? Campaign scoring? Armor permutations? Seamless integration with Bungie.net? Not to mention all the new weapons. I mean, seriously now... - AuLKenny, on 12/18/2007, -0/+5awww *****...
