Ben Heck's Latest Wonder Project: PS3 Laptop
gizmodo.com — It looks like the PS3 is finally getting some hot mod love from console modding's reigning wizard, Ben Heck. He's obviously been leveling up his already formidable powers, this looks like his sickest project yet.

- mywhitenoise, on 04/11/2008, -6/+25But about 30x more useful...and this is coming from someone who has been using macs for years.

I thought it was just a shiny pile of useless plastic and metal - synyster, on 04/11/2008, -4/+5if you install linux
- mrsteveman1, on 04/11/2008, -2/+4Yea, can't install linux on a home computer, that would be just silly
- synyster, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1why would that be silly, ps3 got 7 cores and is good at ripping blue ray disk and other video related decoding, compressing and recording stuff. overall ps3 have powerful computation skills.

- dubloe7, on 04/11/2008, -10/+4probably because people are tired of hearing about the piece of ***** that is the macbook air.
I almost got fired for a job the other day when a guy showed me and a coworker his macbook air. after he left my coworker asked me about it and i started telling him why it was so *****, it turned out the guy had come back and took his anger about his crappy purchase out on me by telling my manager.- Spuy767, on 04/11/2008, -2/+8OR maybe he enjoyed his purchase and just thought you were a douche? Just a thought.
- dubloe7, on 04/12/2008, -0/+1I'm douche because I told someone else that it was a really light computer with no optical drive and only 32 gigs of storage while i thought he wasn't there? and that it costs like $2000.
your right, when a coworker asks my opinion on something I should just not tell them, I should punch them in the stomach instead.

- digitalpencil, on 04/11/2008, -2/+4People have no sense of humour.. If it was something non-mac it probably would have been dugg through the ceiling, but any mention of anything mac is isn't fanboism.. isn't it?

Funny how people turn things around..

- fatherdaly, on 04/11/2008, -2/+1I'd say that's probably not a macbook air.
Its a PS3, just for clarification.

- Vaughanabe13, on 04/11/2008, -3/+101This is one of those things that is incredibly awesome even though there is absolutely no reason for it.
- volacide, on 04/11/2008, -1/+15Except to play Metal Gear Solid 4 anywhere and everywhere. Sounds reason enough for me. Sitting on the plane watching a 4 hour cutscene. :D
- polywaffle, on 04/11/2008, -0/+7dont think it has a battery, and if it does a ps3 probably draws an amazing amount of power so it wouldnt last at all
- volacide, on 04/11/2008, -1/+8You ruin my fun. :( I was willfully disregarding that fact.
- JrGhoull, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1true, but its a good prototype. shows how something liek this might be done. hell in 10 years if patterns hold up then the ps3 should be a very small and cheap (and low energy consuming?) machine ...having its complete game collection by then. Obviously the ps4 will be out by then...but no one has yet entered into the laptop/console hybrid gerne yet. I would love to see sony (or at least somebody!) Such an idea would have alot of potential. powerful game machine that you could take anywhere and play with friends...even have wireless lan parties and what not. plus, providing that they managed to keep the price to around the level that they have kept consoles at...it would cost basically what a low end laptop would. all those factors in my mind come together and form an almost instant success.
edit: they should try this with the ps2 right now.Its very small, cheap, and one of the most popular game systems ever.
- polywaffle, on 04/11/2008, -0/+7dont think it has a battery, and if it does a ps3 probably draws an amazing amount of power so it wouldnt last at all
- kmb1794, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1ummm. yeah that's because gizmodo doesn't know how to publish specs.
- Kbriggs, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2What about if you were in Iraq, and had little access to tech equipment.
- volacide, on 04/11/2008, -1/+15Except to play Metal Gear Solid 4 anywhere and everywhere. Sounds reason enough for me. Sitting on the plane watching a 4 hour cutscene. :D
- OpCzar, on 04/11/2008, -14/+9I liked the color scheme of the 360 laptop, better
- theaceoffire, on 04/11/2008, -1/+4Black has always been my thing.
O.o now he needs to make a Wii + GB DS laptop, and his conquest will be complete!- iofthestorm, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5Pretty sure he's already made a Wii laptop, and why would you need a DS laptop? It's already portable, and frickin tiny in fact. There was a guy who rigged two laptop screens together and sent the output from the DS to the screens (one was a touchscreen) but that took an FPGA and some serious hacking skills, since the DS doesn't have any native video-out.
- theaceoffire, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1>.> I meant incorporating them together so that you could have all of nintendo in a single package...
Sorta like combining the PS3 laptop with a PSP, so you can play all current Sony games on one laptop.
- theaceoffire, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1>.> I meant incorporating them together so that you could have all of nintendo in a single package...

- lostgiddy, on 04/11/2008, -3/+22This Laptop makes more sense then the Xbox version. The Keyboard on the Xbox does not have many uses. The Keyboard on PS3 can be used with the Web Browser and Linux which would be mint!
- had3l, on 04/11/2008, -2/+1I think that his only design flaw is that the keyboard is too small though, he had space for a bigger one.
- WyldeJ, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2"The Keyboard on the Xbox does not have many uses"
What are you talking about?
- WyldeJ, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2"The Keyboard on the Xbox does not have many uses"
- lazyslacker, on 04/11/2008, -4/+2mint? Is that slag for good or awesome?

- Evi1d33d, on 04/11/2008, -9/+4Forgot the grill.
- hellbent88, on 04/11/2008, -4/+7big enough for you?
- adidos, on 04/11/2008, -4/+1"That's what she said"
..wait, that doesn't make sense. How about: "that's what I said"
- adidos, on 04/11/2008, -4/+1"That's what she said"
- guyver33, on 04/11/2008, -5/+2That is just too sweet.
- nickzee, on 04/11/2008, -11/+5This is awesome. Did the 360 mod he made get the RED RINGS
- Myonosken, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Shut up.
But probably not as he added more cooling.
- Myonosken, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Shut up.
- Lprox5, on 04/11/2008, -9/+2That is one sexy laptop, where can I get one?
- secondwheel2, on 04/11/2008, -12/+1Videos, or I don't give a *****
- Jaysunli, on 04/11/2008, -11/+6Pretty useless mod.
- scarz99, on 04/11/2008, -6/+5Bitchin'
- Khast, on 04/11/2008, -7/+3Now if Sony and the other companies would get a clue.... Yeah a TV console is great, but if they made something like this OEM (Call it the PSP 2?)....I think they could probably make the top selling system in no time. Now about the games... Sweet graphics, but I understand a lot of games lack gameplay, or decent control schemes....*cough* Lair.
- xxA7XxaDdiCtxx, on 04/11/2008, -0/+10Some people like to play their consoles on their TV's with surround sound and not a small lcd screen.
- Borgcube, on 04/11/2008, -4/+1*cough*Nintendo DS*cough*PSP*cough*
- ChromaVita, on 04/11/2008, -2/+1Why wouldn't you just buy a high end gaming laptop?
- Ibox, on 04/11/2008, -1/+4So we have to upgrade every time a new game comes out... nothx.
- Silentnite85, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1Because you have to buy each and every game that comes out? My reasonably old computer can play Crysis decently, I'm not at 9000fps and full 5d color, but then I just enjoy playing the game.
And don't you buy a new system around about when the next gen system comes out?- acero47, on 04/11/2008, -0/+2Your analogy doesn't really answer IBox's claim, as there is more than one game per console. I understand what your saying, but not everyone can afford to buy a high-end computer ever, much less every couple years.
- Silentnite85, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1Because you have to buy each and every game that comes out? My reasonably old computer can play Crysis decently, I'm not at 9000fps and full 5d color, but then I just enjoy playing the game.
- Ibox, on 04/11/2008, -1/+4So we have to upgrade every time a new game comes out... nothx.
- Kbriggs, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1I believe the top selling system (all time) is a PS2, and I don't think it's run is over yet.
- g33kfu, on 04/11/2008, -2/+68He built this thing for Engadget, and somehow we get some Gizmodo blogspam...
Original story here (with more pics):
http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/10/the-ps3-laptop- ...- automate, on 04/11/2008, -0/+5Simple. Gizmodo posted the news 4 hours earlier than Engadget.
- RandaII, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1Engadget is more blog spam then any thing else.

It's pretty much the original story.- KidVicious, on 04/11/2008, -1/+5Damn comment system... http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/10/the-ps3-laptop- ...
- foofightrs777, on 04/11/2008, -1/+1Awesome. Though there's so much of it I might call it phat (In the Ronaldo 2006 world cup sense).
- forgiste, on 04/11/2008, -2/+2XD Brilliant! Mad props to Ben
- Cimlite, on 04/11/2008, -0/+12He should just make an all-in-one laptop. Wii, PS3, Xbox360... just throw it all in there.
What it would lack in portability it would make up for in pure kick-ass.- minigamer1896, on 04/11/2008, -1/+4Aside from the issue of the PS3 possibly killing the 360, it sounds like a good idea.
- RSS14, on 04/11/2008, -7/+1This guy has talent and he knows his skill well. He compacted the huge PS3 into a more compact laptop . . . engineers can learn from him.
- polizeit, on 04/11/2008, -0/+4not really, the only reason why he's able to do this and sony can't is because it wasn't done in an assembly line and not made in a technique friendly to mass production.
- mwilkinson, on 04/11/2008, -3/+3I like, how much? we make sexy time for it?
- Jerky1312, on 04/12/2008, -1/+1It's being auctioned off for charity. I wonder how much it will get.
- Zuhsz, on 04/11/2008, -3/+3I'm definitely trading in my Mac for on of them ps3tops...
- N256, on 04/11/2008, -1/+7600 watts of RAW LAPTOP
- Jiggles1875, on 04/11/2008, -4/+2I wonder what the battery life is on that beast. (if there even is one)
- bumblefoot, on 04/11/2008, -2/+1ben heck is a modding god
- CraigReed, on 04/11/2008, -3/+2The design is a bit tacky but the concept is awesome.
- Psythik, on 04/11/2008, -5/+6If he can fit a PS3 into a box that size, then why can't Sony?
- 335io07, on 04/11/2008, -2/+2I wish I had this much free time as this guy.
- xandox, on 04/11/2008, -1/+2That PS3 is freaking sweet as! It seems like everything Ben Heck does should be sold for a fortune! This guy could be and SHOULD be working for all the Console companies!
- ChinezePanda, on 04/11/2008, -2/+2Absolutely stunning!
Truly a very talented individual!
Bravo. - luke374, on 04/11/2008, -1/+13This guy only has one PS3 laptop, while I on the other hand, have three PS3 laptops.

- Ganja420, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1Would it be illegal to sell these?
- Ibox, on 04/11/2008, -0/+1yes, as a complete unit... But you could sell a kit to do yours like this, or send your in to have it done as a service.
- synyster, on 04/11/2008, -2/+1i wouldn't called it laptop and i don't' think i will put on my lap
