- bjornski, on 11/21/2008, -2/+85I love my MMOs, but I still spend 95% of my time soloing. They're big, single-player games to me.
- InfernoX, on 11/21/2008, -5/+69I'm one of those strange hybrid gamers, I can travel between both Singleplayer and Multiplayer and absolute love every second of both.
- worseforwine, on 11/21/2008, -0/+28I really hope you are wrong, well written scripted stories will always offer something MMOs can't.
- IHaveCrayons, on 11/21/2008, -0/+27Fallout 3. That's singleplayer.
- homercles337, on 11/21/2008, -0/+25I not only enjoy single player, i prefer it. Before starting Fallout 3, i was playing Crysis. Before Crysis it was Oblivion. I think i racked up over 200 hours in Oblivion. I have even played every single game in TES series--even Arena. Oops, is that showing my age?
- Sneezyx, on 11/21/2008, -0/+23Nonsense. Fallout 3's massive sales prove there's still a solid market for single-player games, which the developers and publishers ignore at their peril.
- mnemy, on 11/21/2008, -0/+19I love me some competition, but today's multiplayer games get old real fast. For console, I like split screen, which for some bizarre reason is being fazed out. It infuriates me that all the new racing games are online multiplayer only. I get no enjoyment out of ramming some stranger I've never seen nor will never see again into the railing. Might as well be a computer. It's all about getting rowdy with your friends in RL.
And I pretty much refuse to play FPSes with stupid 13 yr olds calling everyone fags and *****. My tolerance for that ended with the original Counterstrike. - subliminalurge, on 11/21/2008, -0/+19Yep, back when I used to play WoW I only ever teamed up with other people when there was absolutely, positively no other way to complete a quest. Not in an effort to be anti-social, I'm not, but because it can be so hard to find someone that fits the criteria of 1). is willing to the quest you need, and 2). isn't a complete douchebag.
Finally stopped playing and let my account expire at level 67 because anything fun at that level was requiring me to team up, and I got tired of, each and every time, having at least one idiot in the group who totally ***** things up for the rest of us. - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -1/+19Ah... Bard's Tale, You've killed 999999 reg dragons.... Ultima Series..........
I shed a tear... - V878, on 11/21/2008, -0/+16Games with good-sized single player campaigns I've played recently: Fallout 3, Fable 2, Mass Effect, Bioshock, GTA4, Saints Row 2, MGS4.
Few shorter length single player games I played recently: Heavenly Sword, Ratchet&Clank:Tools of Destruction, Uncharted: Drakes Fortune, CoD4 (might get overshadowed by the MP but the SP was a lot of fun)
None of those are older than Fall '07. While there may be a strong push for MP games these days, it's hard to deny there aren't a good deal of solid single player games on the market. I prefer Single Player games myself and have found plenty in the list above to keep me entertained. - sofaKing812, on 11/21/2008, -0/+16I enjoy playing multiplayer games, but what kills me are the jackasses you have to deal with. For example, in L4D last night I had to try three times before I found a game where everyone wasn't yell "Ah ***** that *****" or some other retarded ***** not related to the game the whole time. I wish (and it might be possible and I just don't know about it) that Live had an age setting that would match you with players your own age. I know that not all younger players are this way and older players can be this way too, but I have a suspicion that the occurrences of playing with immature people would be reduced.
- mywhitenoise, on 11/21/2008, -6/+19multi-player sucks. I honestly don't see the appeal. So damn repetitive, shoot, kill, die, shoot, kill, die.
The only multi-player game I like is Warhawk because it's fast paced and has a ton of variety. Overall I'd choose a strong campaign over a multi-player fad that will be lost when the next fad arrives in two months. - roxgod666, on 11/21/2008, -3/+16That's pretty much the majority of all gamers so i don't see it as being strange. I bought gears of war 2 mainly for the multiplayer but since they ***** it up so hard, i have no problem playing solo. It's still very fun.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+11Title makes me think of my sex life.
- strad2, on 11/21/2008, -0/+11You sound like a typical (modern day) gamer to me.
- omnithought, on 11/21/2008, -0/+10I think a lot of us who are older gamers that got into games when they were text adventures may have become used to playing solo and are just more accustomed to it. Even in arcade machines and early consoles, at the most you're playing against 3 other players and they're all right there with you.
The earliest true multiplayer I remember is the MUD's and MUSH's, which were still text based.
When you grow up playing epic quests by yourself, such as the Ultima series, it takes some getting used to in order to feel at home in a WoW raid. While those are fun, I still love exploring a game world on my own and discovering what gems the developers put in there. Somehow, something like Barrens chat just cheapens what would otherwise be a perfectly wonderful adventure. And yeah, I can turn of the chat channel, but it doesn't stop some douche from humping corpses next to you. - kingUssop, on 11/21/2008, -0/+10I know there's a huge market for SP that gets under served now. Even World of Warcraft's own statistics are that people are playing that game solo. I wish the "social" buzzword would die down, because it's not that impressive to me. If I wanted company I could always you know... go out and meet people? I don't, so I think I get the message from myself, why do I need that shoved in every videogame?
- jebaird, on 11/21/2008, -0/+10and your point is?
- oboshoe, on 11/21/2008, -0/+9digg for ZORK
man the ZORK series was the ***** for text adventures - inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+98/16-bit solo gaming such awesome memories.
- roxgod666, on 11/21/2008, -0/+9It's pretty much like sports for gamers. In basketball, you shoot, steal, and run throughout the game as well. You have one objective, to win, just like in shooters. There are different ways to win and different things you can do to win etc...Sports and video games should not be compared but it was the best analogy i could think of.
- Riatsala, on 11/21/2008, -3/+12Most of my all time favorites are single player games, but I seem to be spending more time on multi-player recently.
- chas46, on 11/21/2008, -3/+11I go back and forth, when I get bored playing with multiplayer i play a good round of single adventuring.
- BenS, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8MP would be alot more fun without the screaming 10 year olds that play all day and kill you in seconds...
- BionicAntboy, on 11/21/2008, -0/+8I agree. There's not enough multiplayer split screen games, which is kind of ironic how much more doable split screen is with an HDTV.
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7Bi-Gamer
- LedZepAddict, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7That's good single-player.
I've only played COD4 once since I bought Fallout. If a game is good then it's category doesn't matter. - Sozin, on 11/21/2008, -0/+799 Bricks.
http://www.kongregate.com/games/WeirdBeardGames/99 ... - UselessTrivia, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7Who here remembers Legend of the Red Dragon (LORD)?
That game was some how simultaneously single player and multiplayer. It was text-based, designed to play on Bulletin Board Systems which you dialed into. It was basically a turn-based RPG game, but people usually weren't on at the same time, so you left messages, killed players while they were sleeping, etc... Maybe sometimes you'd run into another player, and you could chat or do a live turn-based fight.
I love those asynchronous turn-based games. Very few people make games like that anymore, despite the fact that web interfaces are perfect for it. Tradwars 2000 was another great example...very much a multiplayer game...all about roaming around in space, making money, killing other players...but yet most of the time you were in there all by yourself. - themadrammer, on 08/18/2009, -0/+7 Anyone remember playing video games when we all still had an attention span that lasted a couple of monthes?
I remember slogging through dungeons for MONTHES. The same ole ***** day in and day out, looking for secret rooms and monsters. I spent 4 monthes on Zak McCraken at least. Geez. I can't sit through 3 hours anymore. - jthei, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7Everyone on digg spends most of their time "soloing"
- EmperorAwesome, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7I'm the exact opposite. Once in a while I'll sign into counterstrike or TF2 or something, and then realize why I don't play multiplayer games. There aren't any other people out there that play for a couple hours a week, while I'm busy working or socializing, these people are getting freakishly good at shortening my lifespan to practically nothing per round.
- megaton, on 11/21/2008, -2/+9The fact that you're being dugg up so high indicates that you're not as much of an anomaly as you'd like to think you are.
But that doesn't mean you're not special. Just like everyone else. - TheAngryMob, on 11/21/2008, -0/+7Is it me, or does that title also describe most Diggers' love lives?
- Phaedryn, on 11/21/2008, -1/+8I would kill for a game like Fallout 3 with a true Co-Op mode.
ie - when you start playing you choose a password, any of your friends that know the password can join your "world" (or you can join theirs) any time. Sort of like Diablo2 I guess
It would let me play a game I love with those I enjoy playing with, and at our own pace. - crazyhorse13, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6You must have missed Half-life 2.
- borez, on 11/21/2008, -1/+7Anybody remember the name of that tetris gravity game thing that was on digg a couple of weeks ago?
- veriix, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6go ***** yourself
- caddyalan, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6One of my most nerdy multiplayer experiences early on in life was playing Aerobiz -- a slow, serious airplane company management strategy game -- with three other players at a party. That was far less accessible than Secret of Mana. If I'd had a 4-player device with my NES, then I could've played that system's version of M.U.L.E.
Even so, many of my favorite old and current games are single player only, and don't have any "socialization bonus" or internet connections. Those include action games, RPGs, strategy games, and visual novels. - worseforwine, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6That's the attitude that keeps me off xbox live! Thanks!
- inactive, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6i fund farcry 2 to be pretty bad overall.
no sense of civil war (no battles or firefights raging), no villagers or civilians, no animals, no traffic on the roads, everyone magically wants to kill me, regardless of who they are, roadblocks get tedious, dull missions, average graphics, bad vehicle behaviour
apart from that it's ok - max420, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6I feel exactly the same way as the author of this article. I agree that it is nice to have the ability to connect to a limitless number of people. But I grew up with single player games, and they hold a special place in my heart. More often then not, I much rather enjoy a game alone, then in a multi-player setting.
Games like Left 4 Dead are different tho, little to no story, and designed from the ground up as a multi-player experience. - BionicAntboy, on 11/21/2008, -0/+6A million Fallout 3 players prove you wrong.
- mnemy, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5Seriously. I used to play 4 player split screen on a little ~25" CRT. I can handle the reduced view of 2 player split screen on my 42" 1080p HDTV.
- sofaKing812, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5While I don't totally agree with you, Warhawk is a freaking great multiplayer game.
- volacide, on 11/22/2008, -1/+6Who are you kidding, they should have just made that whole game one straight line and all you would have to do is press W on the keyboard and shoot ***** along your way while explosions went off around you.
- burgermeiste, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5"A 30 year-old transgender from..."
It's OK, rocknrollninja. We love you. - combatchuck, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5That's why the Wii is so popular, despite its complete lack of games that don't suck. They're doing the split-screen party gaming thing.
- Valyn, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5Exactly. I love multiplayer, but not with idiots. unfortunately, that's tough to find with strangers.
I love MMO's. Id rather play alone than with idiots. But i refuse to play them alone. I'd rather go play fallout. - ngageguy, on 11/21/2008, -0/+5The description scared me as I knew exactly what it meant and I thought I was the only one. *sigh*
