nyuk nyuk - MaddDog, on 10/12/2007, -22/+49Battlefield 2182 Expansion: Now with even more ads, and additional free spyware that is automatically installed for your convenience!
Seriously, it is every gamer's duty to spread the bad word about Battlefield 2182 and drive their business down. - toasty168, on 10/12/2007, -30/+9I don't know. I still hate Sony more. Although, EA does come pretty close. Die Sony, EA and Bush administration!!!
- rocke86, on 10/12/2007, -22/+7"The expansion pack will include three new armies, each named after their respective sponsors, such as Coca-Cola and McDonalds. A brand new feature, called “Pay-per-weapon”, will allow players buy their weapons and ammunition using microtransactions. "
Yuck, just plain horrid. - Klarth, on 10/12/2007, -5/+85THE ARTICLE IS A JOKE.
- texpundit, on 10/12/2007, -20/+4Victoria's Secret as a sponsor?!? WTF?!?
What are the sponsoring in the game? Special, purchasible frilly armor panties...for your secretly crossdressing soldier?

Battlefield 2008, Battlefield 2009 ... - PYREX, on 10/12/2007, -2/+5ahhahahahahhaaa hilarious article
brilliant satire, EA deserves it.
btw, bf2142 sucks. it's just bf2 with REALLY annoying ads. same graphics, same physics, same gameplay. - Guye, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2The fact people were so ready to believe the article was real still sorta tells you something...
- ril560, on 10/12/2007, -2/+0@PYREX
the gameplay is 10x better. i do have to admit that the graphics havent changed at all except for the addition of "advanced lighting" which does nothing after i turn it on. I havent noticed any adds at all, but i used the EA downloader. I also didnt have to agree to a EULA for the spyware crap, can anyone confirm if theres an actual difference there? - reichg, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4EA forgot to mention that Satan is now a full parter with EA and to expect more sinister behavior from EA. Because starting in the following months EA will be charging for updates and patches to ensure that EA pisses off as many people and in every way as humanly possible.

"In case you didn’t realize by now, this is ovbiously fake, and hopefully a bit fun with the spyware, bugs and advertising news surrounding BF2142 at the moment."- EbowUK, on 10/12/2007, -1/+9I thought the fun of these stories was *not* pointing out they were fake and giggling at how many people rant and rave at them?
- Talus, on 10/12/2007, -2/+14Somebody really needs to add a (humour) tag to this story's title. LOTS of people are upset about the whole in-game ad thing already .. and they've already proven that they'll believe ANYTHING anybody tells them about EA .. so long as it is negative.
- crysys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I read somewhere that the president of EA can't get an erection unless he kills a dog.
It's true because I read it on the internet.
- crysys, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8I read somewhere that the president of EA can't get an erection unless he kills a dog.
- toasty168, on 10/12/2007, -4/+7You know, the ads might not be so bad if you didn't have to pay so much for the game. You'd think after spending 50-60 bucks you wouldn't have to put up with ads. However, if the game was significantly cheaper or free, I wouldn't mind the ads.
- kaffein, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5You can get the game for $37 @ Frys...
Although the game is fun, still not sure I want to give in even at that price.
Another thing that ticks me off is that if you want to host a server, you pretty much really need a ranked server in order to get players. If the EA premium was not so damn over priced it wouldn't be that bad... $66 extra dollars??
Ranked:
32 Max Player Slots $159.68 Monthly
Unranked:
32 Max Player Slots $96.00 Monthly - Klowner, on 10/12/2007, -1/+7holy crap, those prices are for running your OWN server? As in, paying for the box and the bandwidth, PLUS that? That's frickin ridiculous.
- Toger, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2@Klowner
Normally you spend that much for the server total -- the supplier takes care of box, bandwidth, etc etc. Most places sell it on a per-slot basis, so if you want a ranked server, you pay $x / concurrent player. You don't have to first rent the box and bandwidth.
- kaffein, on 10/12/2007, -4/+5You can get the game for $37 @ Frys...
- retral, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6*ahem* This would be so typical of today's EA.
- tungsai, on 10/12/2007, -3/+2I'm Lovin' It! (TM)
@EbowUK: Yeah! Why couldn't they keep their mouths shut? I wanted to make fun of more people going, "OMG EA SUX SO BAD bla bla bla" - themulf, on 10/12/2007, -4/+8I am a big BF fan, and I have all the PC BF games. But I am going to sit this one out, at least for a while. Anyone else? I'm curious if this game will flop like Vietnam.
- Gunblade, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3I don't believe Vietnam was a flop. That game was fun and stable just like 1942. Just it came in so quick with BF2 just trouncing it because most 1942 players decided to just wait. Plus the mods alone for 1942 kept you going and were pretty satisfying :) and well...there was the Indochina Conflict Mod...that was well better than Vietnam lol.
- ZapWizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4I too am sitting this game out.
- TheBrandman, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2My soldier name in the demo is "DontBuyTheGame". I really don't think this is worth it, but the demo is some good, free, fun.
- Gunblade, on 10/12/2007, -8/+0While this is funny...
I think if Victoria Secret were ever to make a game it would probably be surprisingly good. They spend a crap load on freaking market research and the whole how to control us crap. Ultimately resulting in a good "product" most of the time or in this case game.
Now I just wonder what kind of game- texpundit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Dood... you don't need market research...
1) Guys like hot women is lingerie. We don't really care how much it costs.
2) Women like cute/sexy underwear (as long as it's relatively comfortable). Women only care a little more about how much it costs.
Bam! There's all the market research you need.
- texpundit, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8Dood... you don't need market research...
- KnightMareInc, on 10/12/2007, -5/+2you know its gonna be announced soon
- RMnTnA, on 10/12/2007, -7/+2Why don't they just build the games better to begin with?
The article was amusing but not hilarious.
I hate the British accents in the game. They get a bit annoying at times. It would be a good game if they fix it. The only thing at this point I like about it is how easy you can get unlocks, the weapons and Titan mode. Other than that the game sucks. ;-)
BF2 rock on! - Punisher2K, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4You can tell how many deuche bags don't even read the articles based on the comments.
RTFAMF - kasted, on 10/12/2007, -1/+10i hate myself for owning EA products
- turner050, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1The BF series of games are all I play lately. I think everyone i s way to quick to hate on EA. So what if there's an ad or two on the map you're playing on? I've been playing the crap out of BF2142 and I still have yet to notice one ad. It's obviously not intrusive so why is everyone getting their panties in a bunch over this? I think most just need something to be pissed at all the time.
- kuchino, on 10/12/2007, -4/+10Fix bf2 first!

- SeenD, on 10/12/2007, -8/+4no digg.
voted for inaccurate. because it is a fake - kellymahan, on 10/12/2007, -3/+5There's ads in BF2142?
Ad-Block FTW =)- PYREX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2would be nice if it worked. but, nope. not if you plan on actually playing it online (which virtually everyone who buys it does).
- Gir53457, on 10/12/2007, -4/+3Care to explain why a Lingerie company is advertising to a bunch of nerdy men in their twenties to thirties? Wait. Never mind... Hehehehe...
- Waywinkle, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4I was a fan of BF2, but 2142 doesn't do it for me, apart from the futuristic vehicles and weapons, it seems like they just want to charge retail for a mod someone could have made themselves for free.
- wolver1ne, on 10/12/2007, -2/+2Battlefield = The Sims
- kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1they BOTH are published (and no developed) by EA games.
- kcpwnsgman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1(and now developed)*
- mbthompson, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Good joke article. But as they said at the end all the real spyware, bugs, etc. are enough to keep me away from this lemon.
- floatingpoints, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0For game that do have ads - they can be fixed by simply replacing the textures. Easy.
So even if this was real, it's pretty much a non issue.
Next.- alexkorova, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Ehm, since it's a online game it would probably download the ads from the 'net. And sure, there will probably be blockers, but it might be hard if it masks it with the rest of the game data.
- Rabid_Llama, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Too bad blocking the ads (which is impossible at the moment) is explicitly against the EULA and they could ban you from their ranked servers for it. I'm not sure if they're capable of doing that right now, but it would be within their right.
I hate the entire ads-in-games concept on principle anyway. Paying $50 for a game with no monthly-incurred costs for the developers (i.e., non-MMO games) should be enough. - PYREX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1unfortunately every time you connect it changes them, so you cant just replace or rename a file like you do to avoid the startup movies. no doubt they have punkbuster set up to interpret ad blocking as cheating as well.
- j3one, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5ok so I have to come in here and admit I used to play allot of BF2... The only reason I am not now is time constraints and its not a priority. That said, I grabbed the demo for 2142 and have to say I am not impressed. Knifing someone and getting their dog-tag is way cool, but other than that I don't think a walker and new gameplay mode are worth a whole new game.
The ultimate slam to EA would be if someone made a 2142 mod for bf2, hehe.... - icepickk55, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4article was great lol .....in speaking about this amazing new game play......anyone here on Digg every play Tribes 2?? the whole game just kinda feels like a clone of that game....
- kaffein, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2A lot of games took game play mechanics from the Tribes series... (Planetside, Halo, Battlefield, etc.)
- CDRutledge, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I can't think of a online FPS better then Tribes 2, FTW!!
- alex288288, on 10/12/2007, -5/+3Wow....I cant belive that these ***** are being sponserd by these dicks form Coke, Mcdonalds, and Victoria secert...
and they wonder why people pirate games..why PC games never used to have "AD's" now..there ***** everywhere i for one think thats *****, Advertisments should tay rthe ***** away from Pc games........thats ***** *****.. - malice8691, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3How do I block all the ads but keep the victoria secret ones?
- Guard, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Buried just because it seems half the people that commented were too stupid to realize it was a joke.
Which goes to prove that half the people on Digg don't read the articles.- RMnTnA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Well Put Guard!
- PYREX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1and you were too stupid to realize their comment was a joke on a joke
- Megladon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Yah, no kidding, lol. How much longer till i am playing WOW or SWg and see an Home Depot or Burger King advertisement IN THE GAME, lol
- smedstadc, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1EA and Dice are milking this franchise for all its worth. Because they know that the games fans will buy it despite the myriad of problems the game has.
They still haven't fixed the game ruining bugs and exploits that plague the engine. Players can't even connect to a server because of a Punkbuster bug, the ranked servers STILL DON'T WORK, and they're throwing advertisements into the game to make a little extra cash. I give the game 2 months before Dice issues a patch... and even then I bet it'll be half-baked and poorly tested to the point that it crashes all the servers every two or three rounds ...again.
...and still they pump out buggy game after buggy game, year after year. And we put up with it.- RMnTnA, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Nicely put smedstadc, and don't forget the 10 expansion packs to make even more money!
- PYREX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1now i know the marketers are telling EA people will still buy them.
but im one of those people who WONT. i was a huge fan of the BF series and really looking forward to this game; but i can tell you i will NEVER buy it or install it unless they issue a version that is completely ad free. im sure there are millions of people just like me, and EA will notice.
if they think time will make it any more acceptable & the norm, they're in for a surprise. there are plenty of alternative ad-free games out there. i'd take any one over IGA.
- Asianwaste, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know what? The article seemed plausible with the buy your own weapons microtransactions... but I sort of caught on after putting ads on your soldiers. Funny stuff.
- musntSurfatWork, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0you know for a game and company that draws so much negative aura, there sure are a lot of people that have something to write about, including me D'OH!
- r3m1x, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3wtf Victoria's Secret? Does this mean Tyra Banks is an unlockable in expansion packs?
- FrostyTheDMan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Gawd, don't give em any ideas. :0) Digg cuz its funny.
- CollegeRuled, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I haven't seen a single ad in BF 2142 since it's release.
- peverett, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1You know what - I KNOW its a joke article - but it would be cool if someone actually made this as a mod - Although everybody would want to play for the Victoria's Secrets army - I'm betting their Armour would be... interesting + female body model ;)
Not that we'd want a war simulation where you get to kill Coca-Cola and McDonald's employees - that Jack Thompson bloke would have a fit! - MacLikeDonald, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BF 2142 pwns all you h4ters. No Digg!
- NeoRicen, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Haha, sucked in Americans, Australias Anti Spyware laws prohibit these in game ads.
By the way, buried as inaccurate as the title is grossly misleading.- dupswapdrop, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I am just waiting for someone to hack into the ad system and run some funny ads. As for the spyware just edit their cookies and screw up the data base.
- McNubbins, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1It's a good game...I'm still playing the demo though because I'm not sure if I want to commit. All of this news about spyware bugs me out.
- foodbar, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Joke or not, these days you need a 22nd century computer to play these modern games.
(ObOldGeezer: In my day we played pong on an 8086 and LIKED it) - Codename, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Hopefully, this one won't ship with spyware.

You have obviously never even played the game! How can ads that haven't even started showing up yet be "REALLY annoying?" The only thing they've got going right now are propaganda ads and you hardly even notice them. The real ads will be the same thing (except maybe for the Victoria Secret ads if there ever is any). - DexLuther, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pyrex Wrote: "unfortunately every time you connect it changes them, so you cant just replace or rename a file like you do to avoid the startup movies. no doubt they have punkbuster set up to interpret ad blocking as cheating as well."
Again you are wrong (don't you ever get tired of that?). You can change them easily. I have, and they don't change at start up or anything.
All you need is:
Photoshop (or similar program)
.JPG to .DDS converter
And a neat little program I have to import the images in DDS (or BIK) format into the file where they store the ads to be displayed.
This file isn't scanned by PB, so you aren't seen as a cheater and can play online or offline with 0 problems.
Don't believe me? Check out this screenshot: http://img96.imageshack.us/img96/2429/screen032fc6.jpg (just a test ad I created to see if it actually worked)
