- DBiz, on 10/12/2007, -16/+68GTA hit its peak with Vice City.
Nothing like listening to Flock of Seagulls while driving down neon lit streets in a stolen, camaro-like car. - scallon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+23A lot of us have played "EVERY GTA", its not much of an accomplishment
- richlizard24, on 10/12/2007, -1/+22As long as I get to screw and kill hookers, they are all good in my book.
- corevette, on 10/12/2007, -3/+22for anyone who didn't see....heres the GTA IV trailer:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5579091980861180434&hl=en - goosnargh, on 10/12/2007, -1/+15"The other GTA that nobody played, Grand Theft Auto 2"
Pretty sure this guy has no idea what he's talking about. - thehuntedpossum, on 10/12/2007, -2/+15I really like GTA III, its pretty similar to Vice City, but at its time (aka, when i was younger and in my teenage angst years) it was badass.
- Franey97, on 10/12/2007, -4/+17Or because Vice City was a much cooler setting compared to San Andreas? Theres a thousand thug beat em ups out there, doing it in the 80's was a much cooler, original idea.
- scallon, on 10/12/2007, -1/+14@gigaqauck
How is it racism? Some of us just dont like the gangsta' genre. I'll take a good mafia game (or movie for that matter) over a gangbanger story any day of the week. - lava, on 10/12/2007, -2/+13Who do I have to choose? I really like all of them.
- AndrewDB, on 01/10/2008, -1/+12Are you joking Purple? I used to play GTA II like it was nobodies business. I loved it.
I can remember slamming the hand break on a pedestrian and watching puddles of blood follow my car...
As for my favorite?
Vice City.
I'm an 80s child, I love the music, I love the colors, and everything else. Vice City was the best, although I'm waiting to see what they do with the new one. - MisterCookie, on 10/12/2007, -6/+15I thought Vice City was the best; San Andreas was a step back in gameplay IMO. A lot of concepts that were introduced were never fully developed, and the game was incredibly buggy and just felt unpolished(Remember the bug during the mission where the guy is trying to jump off a roof?)
- Copperhe4d, on 10/12/2007, -3/+12GTA III is good. atleast it doesnt have a storyline thats set around Jetpacks and Aliens
- scallon, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9in its day, GTA 2 was played by a lot of people.
- ngmcs8203, on 10/12/2007, -0/+9I have to agree with both parts of your post. I immediately read the first page and clicked on the link in the text thinking it was a jump to the article. Only to find out that the rest of the article is only linked on the left hand side.
And the original GTA was a flipping awesome game. - MetalLizard, on 10/12/2007, -0/+8GTA III should be the surefire winner. It brought the original 2D games (which did NOT suck, contrary to this article), and put them in a massive 3D world with in-depth missions. The other GTA 3 incarnations, Vice City, and San Andreas, just didn't give me the same experience as GTA III did when it was released in 2001. This list isn't for the true GTA fans, it's for the people who never played the original 2D games on the PC.
- thelatemail, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7I was actually surprised at the slagging off that the original GTA got as well. There should have been some consideration that the game was not only the funnest thing around, it was also incredibly easy to mod compared to other games of the time. Anyone else out there spend hours installing new car packs and playing Snowball City? (http://www.illspirit.com/index.php?page=snowball)
- reddevil3, on 10/12/2007, -0/+7Good ***** God how huge was SA? I spent 60 hours to finish the game and I could have easily spent 20-30 more hours finishing up the rest. But I just got tired of the poor combat controls....I hope they re-do everything for GTA IV.
Bicycling was a lot of fun...I just wish you could listen to music at the same time. - punkrockxtian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+8For the uninformed, the mission MisterCookie is talking about is where you're trying to stop some rapper from committing suicide by jumping off a building. If you had previously used a cheat code in the game, you wouldn't have enough time to catch him, but if you did you wouldn't be able to pass the mission.
- purple, on 10/12/2007, -2/+8I think, in comparison to the numbers that played GTA 3, GTA 2 was played by nobody.
- sardion2000, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Console I assume? GTA:SA on the PC was perfected.
- purple, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6Catching the guy in the back of the truck?
Never experienced any problems with that. - nklnch, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6@m4szyman, "the eating/working out thing was a pain"
People really exaggerate this. Eating and working out sounds dumb when you read about it, but after actually playing it, that is a really small part of the game. Over my entire 30 hours or so of play time, I spent less time eating and working out than I did doing a single mission. It never became an annoying chore at all. It actually added a small dose of realism and variety to the game.
That said, I still liked Vice City better due to the satirical humor. - Regulator980, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6I have to agree with most diggers here and say that Vice City is my personal favorite GTA incarnation. This probably also has to do with the fact that Ray Liotta is a total badass. Hands down, he owned in Goodfellas.
- laplie, on 10/12/2007, -0/+6the original was one of the best for me. Anyone else remember "KILL FRENZY"!!! But like most of the GTA games, it got a little repetative towards the middle.
- johnny23, on 10/12/2007, -3/+8@gigaquack
No, it's not racism. I can't identify with the characters in GTA:SA as much as the ones in GTA:VC. I grew up wanting to be Don Johnson!!! Couldn't get the hang of that 5 o'clock shadow though...
I don't think that makes me a racist as much as it makes you a racist for trying to bring up the subject. - kidd3ckz, on 10/12/2007, -6/+11I hear you can steal iPods in GTA IV, so you can listen to music while walking around- riding bicycles, my dad works for Rockstar.
- quaunaut, on 10/12/2007, -0/+5Vice City the peak? Am I the only person that thought that entire romp was in a city that was designed terribly(Unlike GTA3's city), the story was mostly crap(Once again, unlike GTA3), and isn't a total fanboy of the 80s? I'm all for an 80s soundtrack, but thats not gonna knock it up any higher if you ask me. I loved San Andreas from beginning to end(except the flying parts), but I'll still always see GTA3 as the best. The most revolutionary combined with the best story by far(Mafioso to Yakuza to Cartel? Yowza), I'd have it as peak and San Andreas as a close second.
- bigfkncee, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7you're kidding,right?
- chazuk, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"no switchable radio stations for you, early GTA fans!"
I'm sure i remember tuning the drum and bass channel on the PS1 version with any car.
Am i wrong? I'll have to set the ps1 up and see. - ezweave, on 10/12/2007, -5/+9@DBiz
I don't know about "it's peak", but Vice City should have won this comparison: it's just a lot tighter, the story is more interesting, etc. San Andreas is great, but it's too big and kind of gets boring in the middle. Vice City was fun, all of the time. - t3hNinj4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4Mercenaries definitely wasn't a terrible game, and it really wasn't a GTA clone either. The reviews ( http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/xbx/mercenaries?q=Mercenaries ) are pretty good, and it was really a solid open-ended action game that didn't even have that much in common with the GTA games, aside from the obvious similarities. Huge, completely destructible environments, tons of explosives, drivable vehicles, solid mechanics, a good engine, a decent plot, and lots of Korean soldiers to fight ... what's not to like?
- sardion2000, on 10/12/2007, -2/+6On the console, Vice City may have been the peak, but on PC San Andreas was the peak.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -7/+10I agree that GTA: SA is the best, i have played EVERY GTA game and i still play SA even after i beat it.
- straxus, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3GTA3 was my favorite. I love that your character never speaks. It made it much easier to project myself onto the character I was playing. Even though Vice City was technically a better game, I wasn't able to get into it as much as 3 since Tommy has his own distinct voice and personality.
- jmoh, on 10/12/2007, -3/+6Nah I think GTA:Liberty City has to be the best one out there. Not only did it revolutionize the decaying adventure series, but transformed it into a whole new genre. Plus the game did a hell of a job painting the scene very well, nothing beats a great storyline with a great game.
- bigfkncee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4no they didn't . it sucked. violence and nintendo doesnt always work
- corkfecker, on 10/12/2007, -1/+4I preferred the character in vice city. I'd vote vice city. Though some parts of san andreas were really class.
- latenightdigger, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2Fans of Ray Liotta's performance in Goodfellas might want to look into the movie Something Wild, made four years earlier. His part is smaller but he plays a more raw and intimidating character.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091983/
And I'd vote for Vice City too. - piratepete, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2wasn't GTA 2 the game where you could put a music cd in while the game was playing and it would play it from there on the Playstation? So it was like your own radio station with your cds.
- zioxide, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I love all of them, but Vice City is definitely my favorite.
Many elements of San Andreas, like being able to fly real planes (instead of a ***** seaplane), character customization, swimming, better guns and stuff, makes San Andreas great, but the setting in Vice City was so awesome. The city was perfect, the character was perfect, the music was perfect, everything.
Now, since they're making GTAIV based in Liberty City again, we might see Vice City again in the sequel to GTAIV. And that would be awesome. - tim4, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2There's also a Game Boy Color GTA game. The Game Boy Advance one is not the first handheld GTA.
Proof: http://www.gamespot.com/gbc/action/grandtheftauto/index.html - beatbox32, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I really hope they make a San Andreas sequel...Not sure where they would go with it, but I definitely loved the story and characters.
- poet, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3Mercenaries was on of the worst games in the past 5 years. It's definitely not the best GTA clone.
- m4szyman, on 10/12/2007, -3/+4Vice City was definitely the peak. San Andreas was good but it had a lot of problems - the eating/working out thing was a pain, the gang territory thing got annoying really fast, the city was huge but 3/4 of it was flat and uninteresting compared to Vice City (the desert/forrest areas were really dull), the whole "gangsta" theme didn't appeal to me or anyone I know, the story was all over the place (you start out as a gang member and somehow end up in the forrest helping a hippie burn crops and then end up helping a nerd wage war on another nerd with remote control helicopters) and the soundtrack was pretty bad if you're not into hip hop.
- CannonDancer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I do believe you could change radio stations by pressing up on the d-pad.
- punkrockxtian, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I hate how this site uses the exact same border on EVERY picture on their site.
- goosepillows, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I agree. This point is neglected in most GTA comparisons.
Didn't anyone else think CJ had about as much personality as the mute from GTA III?
As tommy verceti, when i acted like a badass, i emoted as a badass would. I DID YOUR WIFE!
I felt that the storyline progressions in GTA III and San Andreas made the main characters weak, and at the mercy of others. Not so in Vice City, you were the boss in Vice. - Endies, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2I would still say that GTA III is the best. It may not have the guns, it may not be the biggest, it may not be the nicest looking; but its got something to it. What, well for the most part, the best driving system in any of the games indefinitely as well as possibly just just the best game engine. Theres just something about it the works better than the other games.
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -2/+3I have only played the original :(
