Awesome NES and SNES characters using craft beads (pics)
flickr.com — Flickr album of really cool crafts done using only plastic beads with characters such as Quickman, Yoshi, Shyguy, Link, and more. A must see.

- Vicille, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4@Mullinsmcd
There's a post about it on craftster from a while back worth checking out.
http://www.craftster.org/forum/index.php?topic=98400.0 - squishee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3Mullinsmcd,
Those beads are typically called "fuse beads." They're the kind that you stick onto the little plastic template that has pegs sticking up, and then you stick a piece of wax paper over it and iron it until the beads melt together. - LacY, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2They're "perler beads" Perler is the brand that makes them... you put a SPECIAL piece of paper between them and the iron and the head from the iron fuses them. Don't use wax paper--the wax paper actually sticks to the iron (yes, I know from experience). :)
You can get the beads at most crafts stores in the "kids" section. - ReXorcist, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Cool, I didn't know they still made the beads for this.
I still have a Ninji from SMB2 that I made 15 years ago kickin' around here somewhere... - ayeroxor, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4"the wax paper actually sticks to the iron (yes, I know from experience). :)"
The wax is only on one side of the paper. Don't iron that side. Problem solved... - squishee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1LacY, you don't need a special kind of paper. Wax paper works fine. I used to work at an elementary school, and we ironed the crap out of fuse beads every other day with wax paper covering them. As long as you keep moving the iron over it and don't let it sit still on one spot for too long, it shouldn't stick.
- fuzzboxer, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Here's a story about the guy: http://blogcritics.org/archives/2006/09/03/181616.php
- Tivac, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Foglera is not the guy mentioned in that article.
- Aarlos, on 10/12/2007, -1/+6Chrono!!
- KiSA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Chrono? are you referring to Chrono Trigger or the character, Crono?
Do not disrespect one of the greatest games ever created! - desertrose, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Crono!! :]
and it also bothered me that the girl who commented on the Crono beads spelled it Chrono as well.
but, the FFVI moogle and Link...jeez. i wish i had those fuse beads again. - Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3The character's actual name is Chrono, with the H. There was only room for five letters in the naming code, so they dropped the H. No other character required more than 5 letters in their name so Square didn't bother to expand the code to include six letters. (which is odd considering Schala and Dalton are dummied-out data characters you can find with Game Shark).
- KiSA, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3Chrono? are you referring to Chrono Trigger or the character, Crono?

Sorry, I still bown down to Earthbound like I bought it yesterday. It's just... one of a kind. - CherryTzors, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I liked the first-person acid trip battles. I never did finish Earthbound though...

- wingnut21, on 10/12/2007, -2/+7Digg just can't get enough of pixels transformed into real life lately. Painted rooms, LEGOs, birthday cakes, bricks, craft beads...
C'mon people make it interesting. Do it with cars and aerial photography.
(Although I must admit, these are done really really well--especially the colors.) - halosniper7, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1smurf?

- eplawless, on 10/12/2007, -0/+3woooooooooooo!
- Voxxov, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1They're not actually beads. Its this neat kit where you get tons of these plastic things and arrange them on a plastic grid. You put waxpaper over it and iron it, and the plastic colored pieces melt together and look like pixels. Used to play with that stuff when i was little....
Cool site.- Elranzer, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Perler Beads - http://www.perlerbeads.com/
You can also buy them at Wal-Mart or Target.

- kjm16, on 10/12/2007, -2/+4Sonic wasn't NES or SNES, was he? I thaught he was Genisis only.
- Rikushix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+4He's a part of the Nintendo family, now with the Virtual Console.
- ucbmckee, on 10/12/2007, -1/+3I have a friend who is terribly crafty and likes to do random things. She made an assortment of S/NES characters out of craft clay. If people like this sort of thing, they're displayed at:
http://myspace-903.vo.llnwd.net/00121/30/95/121985903_l.jpg
Yes, I know, it's a myspace link. The things aren't for sale, at least not that I know of (they're old, whatever was for sale was probably already sold), and I'm not advertising for her or anything. I just thought they were kind of cool.- ginrummy, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Pretty neat. It's amazing how easily pixels translate into just about everything else.
- ucbmckee, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ahh, since the link doesn't have any attribution, those belong to Amy Ng of SF. I'd post the link to her myspace, but, uh, yaaaaahh.... maybe she'd kill me.
- flamingmb, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2yay ness and mr saturn!

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/19/93839030_d065b40a9b_s.jpg- om3ganet, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1Apparently the Roman one of same style is from the somethingawful forums. I'm guessing this is from the same set.

A Fantastic Black Mage! - BuiltToday, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I've been doing this too, but I'm mounting mine on the games' background.
I have been setting up a site to sell these and a bunch of other cool NES designs.
Check back soon for the URL.

- brandonhoth, on 10/12/2007, -7/+1When I was a child, I spaoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
I guess I am asking, who gives a *****? Fruity beads based on 20 year old video games? OOOh, the novelty!- gfixler, on 10/12/2007, -1/+2Well, I love it. It's sheer joy for me to look through their perler bead sprite set. I've even played a bit myself:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/garyfixler/sets/263696/ - Mega Man
http://www.flickr.com/photos/garyfixler/sets/280642/ - Zelda stuff
http://www.flickr.com/photos/garyfixler/sets/288328/ - Koopas/Mr. Game & Watch
http://www.flickr.com/photos/garyfixler/sets/72057594110204707/ - Mario sprite done in keychain Rubik's Cubes
http://www.flickr.com/photos/garyfixler/sets/72157594196654347/ - a morph I made (originally on the computer)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/garyfixler/sets/72057594111061797/ - an entire art exhibit I attended, based on this stuff
And yet, these craft projects don't define me. They were honest fun I had while relaxing in front of the TV after long days at a respectable job. Somehow, despite being "childish," I've managed to pull together what I would have to call a really great life, full of great friends, and good times. What exactly am I missing? What is it I should put away, and in favor of what? Your words don't strike me as someone who feels the kind of happiness each day that I've found through living how I choose, and not how some presumed societal norm dictates. And yes, this entails occasionally reminiscing with my fond childhood memories, and retaining some of my childlike wonder.
