- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+2I'm not sure what's so special either, autism is not disabling him from playing basketball... I agree with the above poster that this is really not an achievement. Anyone who feels that it IS quite an achievement needs to get their head out of their ignorant ass and learn a thing or two about autism. The way people are commenting it seems that people think autism is like Down's syndrome.. well it's NOT.
Autism is often described as "extreme male mind" which means many autistic people have trouble with feelings but excel in mathematics and 3d visualization. Last time I checked 3d visualization was pretty damned important in making shots with a basketball.
So that warm and fuzzy feeling you people are having ... that's called ignorance. Unfortunately in my country of the good ole USA ignorance is a plague!
(So is obesity but I will save that rant for another time) - DeathByWombat, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1I saw this on the news, that kid is incredible, not many people could do that, props to him!
- mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1it was pulled off the front page because it was voted by digg users as being "lame" or "spam"
- penguinix, on 10/12/2007, -0/+1A 3-point shooting savant?
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0BIG DIGG!
- TheGrinReaper, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0 What this kid did was astounding accomplishment for anyone. It's almost as if some of your are inadvertently implying that we cannot talk about such an event because this guy happens to be autistic. Autism is something that exists and though it may also exist as a label I don't think it is automatically negative.
-I had this moment when I saw that title on the front page where I was on the absolute virge of, admitted, disappointment with digg(ers) (and CBS too, Jesus) but after seeing this video that title honestly makes me think of how awesome that story is. - Wyattx17, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ownage.
- sasquatchtree, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0The ROC blows up a Digg spot! W00t!
- bobertfishbone, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0They played my old high school's team in that game. I know some of those kids.
- bakatrinh, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0kobe!
(chappelle show reference) - dbrodbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Give it 15 years and you will hear 'autistic player signs with NHL team.' That will be my son.... (unless elmerfudd's kid gets there first).
Oh and moron up there, autistic people are not retards. However, you seem to fit the bill nicely.
Anyone with a Toe is the ASD would have blown up? Wrong. Dead wrong. ASD is a wide specturm, it depends a great deal on the individual. - kitykity, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Yes--it's gone--help!
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0This is still the best basketball video EVER: http://www.youtube.com/?v=uVL5vwBuKY4
- elmerfudd, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I have a child who is high-functioning autistic. Tears are streaming down my face as I type this. The 3-pointers are amazing, but the real jerker is the reaction of his fellow teammates and students. Kids like him are usually targets of cruelty, at best ignored & shut out. Good for him!
- zarand, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0one of the most front page worthy stories i've ever seen
- collapsibletank, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0
Not autistic. Special educational needs yes. Autistic no. Anyone with even a toe on the autistic spectrum would've exploded in that environment.
Cracking vid though. Digg-dugged. - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0And you made it seem like he did something bad, like ruined the game or something, with that title
- capn_caveman, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1I should have warned people: this is a video
- jamiedb007, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0the video's not there anymore.. any idea how to find it? I wanted to show it to my Team~
Thanks - mrASSMAN, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0when i saw the title i thought it was about an autistic kid that went insane and went on a murderous rampage.. so i laughed and clicked.
it wasnt. but it was still great: digg! - speedmaster, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1What a great story! Been all over the local news here in the Rochester area.
- dbrodbeck, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0go to cbs news, they have it.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"I have a child who is high-functioning autistic. Tears are streaming down my face as I type this. Very true, the reaction from his friends is just great! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"Absolutely lame that this was pulled off the fron page."
No offense, but it's absolutely lame that it ever made it there in the first place. If everybody went around posting every feel good article they found on the AP/Reuters, Digg would just be another fark. Not to mention, yours was the third or fourth (at least) time it was submitted, frontpaged and removed within three days.
I don't find it lame that it was removed whatsoever. In fact, I find it impressive that digg seems to work, even if only in extremes. (Obviously, there are plenty of borderline diggs that still make it to and stay on the frontpage, but what can you do, you know?) - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1"thats the biggest "f-you" if you think about it. yeah.. i'm autistic. watch this... **pwndpwndpwnd**"
Actually, what went through my head was "how in the hell did the coach not know the kid could hit three-pointers?". I mean, the kid is "on the team". He suits up and takes the bench. He spends time with the team at every game and practice. You're telling me nobody EVER just tossed the kid a ball and said "take some shots" in all the time he was "on the team"?! - iKato, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Brother went to RIT. Mother grew up there in Rochester. The former said the sun never came out. I guess this is the best thing to happen there since Kodak started.
- inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Autism is just a disconnect between the mind and the brain. The brain doesn't make the person's mind, it's just the physical apparatus the mind uses to express itself.
- slythic, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Pretty good story. Crazy shots and reactions.
I too thought the kid had done something bad according to the title. Good to see otherwise. - The_Dark_Titan, on 10/12/2007, -1/+1Hell yea DUGG! That is sooo ***** sweet. He pwnz them all! What a good story......
- simcjt, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0it's a chuckle but not the best
- AppleBranFan, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"boo, i wanted to see him run around hitting kids and throwing chairs."

Balmer has autism? - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Man, I was hoping he'd have some special powers and he'd be able to think the ball in.
now this has nothing to do with autism, but
TIMMMMMAAY! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0i thought he like went mad and hurt somebody with that title
- ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0So what was the end score of the game?
- ToadX, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0Ah.. they won 79-43...
- gwjc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0than rather
- gwjc, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0more farkish then dugg
- mightymouse, on 10/12/2007, -0/+0"i thought he like went mad and hurt somebody with that title"
Me too. - merdeisel, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0already know the story. Truly inspiring.
++++DIGG! - Ignignokt01, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Cool for the kid... thats a pretty amazing, even for a regular player

DIGG!!
wow - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1I for one marked as +lame
It's just a random kid making baskets...so what.
He has autism and it doesn't inhibit his playing ability... so what's point
A basketball story on digg... +lame
I've seen a fat kid with downs syndrome whoop some people's asses at football. Am I going to post a video on digg, hell no! - inactive, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1"I dont get what so special, he is autistic yes (not a physical hadicap and barely a mental one), maybe if he had cp or down syndrome, it would be interesting."
I think the reason it keeps being posted on digg is that "geeks" seem to have this crazy infatuation with believing that they suffer from autism. Just go to slashdot or even here on digg and do a search on the word "autism" and look at how many of the articles support the claim that geeks tend to have varying degrees of autism. It's like a cult of victims or something.
So this is like "one of their own" doing it.
Not saying it isn't cool or amazing what he did - but just trying to figure out why the big deal about autism. It doesn't look like it physically or mentally affects him in ways that would prevent him from playing the game, so why should it be anymore special because of that than because he's just a kid who has never played a minute in a game before? (That, by the way, is what I find to be far more amazing).
Hell, there are people with actual physical limitations who make great achievements in sports - including professional and olympic (amputees, asthma sufferers, etc). So . . . Anyway. I'm sure this will be taken as "oh you're so mean hating on a cripple!" or whatever. But . . . you see what you want to see, I guess. - munkey, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0That was an awesome story, made my night even better!
- simpletech, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0feelgood story of the century.
great digg!!!! ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ - mikeyaj86, on 10/12/2007, -1/+0Dig a million times over !
- mushoo, on 10/12/2007, -2/+1What Seumas said.
Although I give the guy credit for making that many people act like retards.
"Dugg Dugg Dugg! I would not have seen this if it wasn't for Digg.
I never watch the "News" it's never uplifting."
I take it you gather your information from Oprah instead. -
