Assassin's Creed tangled in scandal that won't go away
tgdaily.com — Great controversy surrounds Assassin's Creed and decision to remove DirectX 10.1, damaging ATI's surprising performance advantage. TG Daily conducted detailed investigation and after talking to various game developers, Ubisoft and Nvidia, learned that original explanations do not hold ground. Was there any money involved...? - jknevitt, on 05/09/2008, -5/+2Patches? Why are you smouldering?
Patches?
PAAAAATCHEEESSSSSS!!!!
- lacronicus, on 05/09/2008, -10/+46"Solution is simple: if you run ATI hardware, just don't patch the game (once that the patch comes out) and enjoy all the advantages of DirectX 10.1 - e.g. one pass less to render."
What's the big deal? Isn't it common knowledge that, unless the patch solves a problem you're having, don't install it? If you're happy with the way the game is now for you, then ignore the patch; no one's telling you that you have to update. This really isn't as complicated as people are making it out to be.- vibrokatana, on 05/09/2008, -4/+37This leads to all sorts of problems, particularly with security. The general idea is that you patch to AVOID having problems. So if you install Windows and say "oh it works fine as it is so I wont patch it", chances are you will be screwed eventually. "Not fixing something unless it is broke" is generally a bad idea, as it tends to lead from one thing to another and get worst.
- Spuy767, on 05/09/2008, -0/+11Preventative maintenance = win.
- endlessoul, on 05/09/2008, -1/+7Of course installing Windows patches is a good idea. But what lacronicus is trying to say is that if a game is running the way it should, especially a single player game, then don't patch it. If it's a multiplayer game, then there's likely to be networking patches, which you should then patch to fix the game.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.- BearinG, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3Also since its not multiplayer, there won't be an requirements of specific game versions..
- sa7ouri, on 05/09/2008, -7/+2I haven't patched my WinXP PC for a couple of years now. There is not reason for me to patch it, as I'm quite happy with the way it works. Patching it might introduce unknowns (eg. hardware-support issues), that I don't like dealing with.
- ispshadow, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8If your computer has a link to the outside, and you haven't patched it for a couple of years now, it's probably compromised.
It is the computers that aren't being well maintained that end up in zombie networks that continue to spam the rest of us. Thanks. - fotbr, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5Unless you have other mechanisms in place (a good, external firewall, for a start), and are smart about your internet activities.
- ispshadow, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8If your computer has a link to the outside, and you haven't patched it for a couple of years now, it's probably compromised.
- unionaire, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2you take your chances either way, there are cases where you screw up by patching things or cases that the opposite holds true.
In this case, however, your argument has no ground because if you already knew something is gonna cause more trouble then solve problems for you, why would you do it???
- sexybobo, on 05/09/2008, -2/+24Easier said then done if you bought the game on steam.
- fotbr, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8There's an easy option labeled "Do not automatically update this game".
- TheGuruStud, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2That was broke before :( Probably fixed now, though.
- fotbr, on 05/09/2008, -1/+8There's an easy option labeled "Do not automatically update this game".
- radixus, on 05/09/2008, -11/+5Sure you can ignore the update if you managed to purchase the game on physical media. But services like Steam, for example, force push game updates automatically. With my experience with Steam I have yet to find an option to disable automatic game updates from installing. So in some cases gamers don't really have a choice.
- HolyChimp, on 05/09/2008, -0/+16In steam, right click the game, click properties, click the updates tab then change it to 'Do no automatically update this game'. Voila!
- GreyICE, on 05/09/2008, -1/+7Given that it's readily available in steam menus, I have to say that this is just random reposting of crap found on some forum, not an actual complaint from an intelligent user.
- MWeather, on 05/09/2008, -7/+1Or a post by someone who spends their time gaming instead of looking through Steam's menus.
- GreyICE, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5So steam's current system hasn't really effected him in any way, but he just wanted to bitch?
Oh, wait... digg. - MikeSD34, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3The parent post had already stated that they had looked for the option but didn't find it. Which seems a little odd considering how easy to find it is.

- Namtaru, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2this verbage used to be true for some things, only thing i have really heard it talked about still is with firmware, since you run the risk of bricking your electronics. Unless you know you need it, you should just leave it. (maybe bios as well, but that can come with other stability updates aside from just hardware support)
i have never heard of anyone recommending you to NOT patch a game, or like vib said, windows itself... - gadgetuk, on 05/09/2008, -2/+5Although Assassins creed doesn't have an online multiplayer option, most new PC games do. People are just used to patching their games as soon as possible because otherwise the servers wont let them on. The "If it aint broke" cliche holds true for certain things - BSD for example - but I'm afraid PC games have become a patch-or-die thing.
- jonnyeh, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2but not this game.
- crossmr, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5Assuming this update doesn't fix anything else, or there isn't a future update which fixes something and includes this one too..
- kingUssop, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4Uh, no that's not common knowledge. Common knowledge is to update your software because there's usually a lot more than one thing fixed.
- chillypacman, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2What if another patch comes out that that adds some content and you suddenly find yourself in a tricky situation?
Just saying, just because this isn't the case doesn't mean it will always be like this. - volacide, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2I understand what you were going for, but I'm sorry. No. That really isn't the right mindset at all. Patches should NEVER hinder *anyones* experience. It's just that simple.
That's even more simple than not patching a game just because you're not having any problems. A patch should always be a good thing.
- vibrokatana, on 05/09/2008, -4/+37This leads to all sorts of problems, particularly with security. The general idea is that you patch to AVOID having problems. So if you install Windows and say "oh it works fine as it is so I wont patch it", chances are you will be screwed eventually. - orangedude, on 05/09/2008, -3/+29Instead of simply removing DX 10.1 support, couldn't they just release two versions of the patch?
ATI patch --> keeps DX 10.1 + adds fixes
Nvidia patch --> reverts DX 10 + adds fixes- Ganja420, on 05/09/2008, -5/+25Nvidia doesn't want to have a performance disadvantage
- aladrin, on 05/09/2008, -9/+3Because that means they now have 2 products to test instead of 1.
- dazparkour, on 05/09/2008, -1/+4You mean they didn't release a PS3 version too?
- ispshadow, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6Uhm, they're testing for two products (or more) anyway...video cards.
- dazparkour, on 05/09/2008, -3/+1Way to steal my joke and get more diggs. (one from me)
- dazparkour, on 05/09/2008, -0/+13Must... resist... common sense...
- surfacewound, on 05/09/2008, -1/+10The memo line on the nVidia check specifically disallows this.
- dazparkour, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1Two separate patches would work.
- wildmXranat, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Nividia's advertising money has strings attached. - Make us look better, now carry on
- chillypacman, on 05/10/2008, -0/+3Because the way its meant to be played is on nvidia, regardless of how ***** its DirectX implementation is. If it does better on ATI hardware then it MUST be gimped so that nVidia can take the lead again.
This isn't about common sense, this is about money and crude marketting. It should be illegal and I bet it is. - AzraDarkness, on 05/12/2008, -0/+0Marketing Ploy + (Money *4) - Common Sense = No Patch for you!

- gcnaddict, on 05/09/2008, -14/+6Assassin's Creed for the PC blows anyway. Who cares?
- weizbox, on 05/09/2008, -2/+14Not on my comp.. it has a higher resolution than my x360, and runs just as fast. I can also still use my wireless controller using the pc receiver... so everything feels the same.
- Spuy767, on 05/09/2008, -16/+4Bragging that a game looks exacty the same on a 1000$ + PC as it does on a 400$ console is kind of retarded.
- TrancePX, on 05/09/2008, -1/+11He wasn't bragging. If you read his comment you notice he said he ran it at a higher resolution than the 360, thus it's a sharper image/more detail and he was simply responding to the guy who said that the PC version sucks. There is really no difference, except performance depends on your hardware. If you don't have a $400 console, and all you have is a $1000 pc, it would be kind of retarded to buy a $400 console to play Assassins creed on.
- asspants, on 05/09/2008, -4/+2What if I was bragging that I could build a computer for $400 that will play it better than the xbox 360 version, would I be cool then?
- JMDupont, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2No.
- nonymous666, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1You mean you own a console, but do not own a PC?
Most people already own a PC. The cost to do decent gaming on it an additional ~$400 video card, so the price of PC gaming versus console gaming is about the same take or give a few dozen dollars, not a $1000.
- Spuy767, on 05/09/2008, -16/+4Bragging that a game looks exacty the same on a 1000$ + PC as it does on a 400$ console is kind of retarded.
- Planets, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2I'm willing to bet you came to that conclusion without actually playing it. Am I right?
- weizbox, on 05/09/2008, -2/+14Not on my comp.. it has a higher resolution than my x360, and runs just as fast. I can also still use my wireless controller using the pc receiver... so everything feels the same.
- plizard, on 05/09/2008, -38/+33this is why i just console game.
- TremorX, on 05/09/2008, -24/+16You're getting dug down because PC fanbitches are still humping the ***** out of that corpse, and they won't stop long enough to find out she stopped breathing a few years ago.
- BadseedJR, on 05/09/2008, -13/+7True story... Games on my 20 inch monitor, or games on my 52 inch TV... I'll take the TV, thanks.
- KMartSheriff, on 05/09/2008, -3/+17I agree until an FPS comes into question, and whether or not it has mouse/keyboard support on said console. ***** those stupid twin thumbsticks on controllers.
- theaceoffire, on 05/09/2008, -2/+5Now if more PS3 games would create good keyboard layouts in game...
- NCg8r, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1You enjoy your Breakfast in Bed setup using a keyboard and mouse on a couch. The rest of us have stopped complaining about gas motors putting the buggy whip out of commission...
- MWeather, on 05/09/2008, -3/+13Lower resolution on a bigger screen? No thanks. If I can't turn the graphics above 1280x1024, then I play on my TV, otherwise why limit your resolution?
- BadseedJR, on 05/09/2008, -2/+3Yeah, HD TVs go up to 1920x1080 these days...
- jgtg32a, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3And my 19in monitor goes up to 1600X1200
- brianara3, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4and my 24" lcd monitor goes to 1920x1200, so it matches or passes an HDTV
- BadseedJR, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3^^ Your monitor not being widescreen doesn't mean it passes at TV that is widescreen which accounts for the difference in pixels.
- jgtg32a, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Vertical resolution 1200. HD tv vertical resolution 1080. Its a higher resolution. I just miss some of the peripheral view, which I haven't really missed that much anyway.
- maximatron, on 05/09/2008, -6/+3Why limit the size of your screen?
- MWeather, on 05/09/2008, -2/+6Because I don't like gigantic pixels.
- BearinG, on 05/09/2008, -5/+2@MWeather
That's caus you're sitting too close.. - jgtg32a, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3Because in the end it looks the same you just sit 20 ft away, instead of 2 ft
- Bulletbillx, on 05/09/2008, -0/+9Or. PC with better graphics + DVI to HDMI cable and audio cables + 52 in TV. seriously. you CAN hook PCs up to giant HDTVs.
- BadseedJR, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2I'm not moving my desktop to the living room when I want to play a game. I will use the console... which is designed for games specifically.
- BearinG, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3I do it all the time but like i said previously.. you need a proper setup for your keyboard and mouse.. its just not comfortable being curved over my coffee table..
Its like having a steering wheel and pedals, if you have a crappy setup, its gonna suck..
- dynelol, on 05/09/2008, -2/+3Why limit the size of your screen? Watch a movie on a large ***** floor model and then watch that movie on your computer screen. The quality different more than makes up for the size.
- BearinG, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2Yeah everyone got ***** floor models that don't show colors properly..
Your computer monitor should NOT be calibrated for watching movies either.. unless you have multiple settings on different inputs. If you don't then, movie watching or PC usage is wrong..
- BearinG, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2Yeah everyone got ***** floor models that don't show colors properly..
- KMartSheriff, on 05/09/2008, -3/+17I agree until an FPS comes into question, and whether or not it has mouse/keyboard support on said console. ***** those stupid twin thumbsticks on controllers.
- TheG2, on 05/09/2008, -6/+3I have a computer and 2 of the "next gen" consoles. PC gaming isn't dead, but its taking a beating. I know in the last few months its mostly been sitting idle as a File/Web server, but thats mostly because my room is a disaster and new games that are console only are sucking up my free time (BoomBlox + GTA4).
- allan17, on 05/09/2008, -0/+11Let me know when consoles have good RTS, TBS, and flight sims. Also, FPS games are much better on the PC.
- fotbr, on 05/09/2008, -1/+5Sadly, the majority of console gamers don't have the attention span for RTS, TBS, or flight simulations, and with the exception of the PS3's keyboard/mouse support, don't have good control setups either.
- MWeather, on 05/09/2008, -1/+4Well, for flight sims, you can use a Logitech flight stick on the PS3.
- BearinG, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2"Sadly, the majority of console gamers don't have the attention span for RTS, TBS, or flight simulations"
Where did you get these "facts" ? Way to generalize... You forget that some console gamers were PC gamers at one point.. - fotbr, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2You'll note I said "majority" not "all". And yes, I am generalizing, based on a) the success of the Wii and the rise of the "casual gamer" and b) the console titles that sell very well (aside from casual games) are usually non-stop-action (FPSs and God of War) or sports games.
RPG fans (outside of Japan) are generally getting screwed by the consoles as well; MMORPG for consoles is nonexistent, and console RPG fans are (again, based on what I've seen of sales) a small number compared to the action & sports.
- Wartz, on 05/09/2008, -1/+5add sub sims to that. I love the silent hunter series and sub command despite ubisoft's usual 1/16 assed development style so you have to download 3 gigs of mods to turn them into great games.
- fotbr, on 05/09/2008, -1/+5Sadly, the majority of console gamers don't have the attention span for RTS, TBS, or flight simulations, and with the exception of the PS3's keyboard/mouse support, don't have good control setups either.
- BadseedJR, on 05/09/2008, -13/+7True story... Games on my 20 inch monitor, or games on my 52 inch TV... I'll take the TV, thanks.
- Genma, on 05/09/2008, -1/+11right because consoles always work and never need patches, and the devs never run into conflicts between competing platforms.
- eridius, on 05/09/2008, -6/+2Because you don't have to worry about hardware incompatibilities, and you know that the game you're playing was tested on your hardware and works, and you know you'll get the same performance out of the game that the game devs did, etc. etc. etc.
- SteelChicken, on 05/09/2008, -3/+1shut your whore mouth and go download the GTAIV patch for PSA, toolbag.
- brutalsponge, on 05/09/2008, -2/+0It's the fault of the game devs, not of the platform. Dolt.
AC on PC was a ***** terrible port. Ubisoft are the only ones to blame.
- TremorX, on 05/09/2008, -24/+16You're getting dug down because PC fanbitches are still humping the ***** out of that corpse, and they won't stop long enough to find out she stopped breathing a few years ago.

- GhostFreeman, on 05/09/2008, -13/+3I know this has nothing to do with the topic at hand but Highway Gothic is an awesome typeface.
Back to the topic at hand: Ubisoft should have listened to common sense before doing this. Also, isn't Assassin's Creed a console game?- koolkelso, on 05/09/2008, -4/+3i think that is the single greatest comment ever written on any subject matter anywhere.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/09/2008, -3/+2Well, then you must be stupid too.
- koolkelso, on 05/09/2008, -3/+2Well then, you obviously must not understand the awesomeness of the Highway Gothic typeface.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/09/2008, -3/+2Well, then you must be stupid too.
- dimizzz, on 05/09/2008, -2/+0a lot of diggers seem to hate highway gothic...
- dynelol, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1I think they just get confused on if it's sarcasm or not and they just opt for digging down since their pride is hurt. Ridiculous.

- sexybobo, on 05/09/2008, -6/+21The way it sounds to me is the majority of gamers have nvidia cards the DX10.1 is causing problems for the majority of people that play the game (those with nvidia cards) so they decided to make the game stable for every one instead of having a slight improvement for people who own ATI cards.
It makes sense to me what is every one complaining about I think over all stability is better then having slight improvements for a small portion of the people that play the game.- lamiaconfitor, on 05/09/2008, -6/+2that would make this the one and only game that it is better to run an ATI card on.
- jgtg32a, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3Yes Nvidia is almost always faster, but ATI card work and rarely ever die.
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2I have yet to have an nvidia card die on me, even overclocked. what are you doing to yours?
- jgtg32a, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3Yes Nvidia is almost always faster, but ATI card work and rarely ever die.
- chillypacman, on 05/10/2008, -0/+2Would it kill them to add DX10 support while keeping 10.1?
- lamiaconfitor, on 05/09/2008, -6/+2that would make this the one and only game that it is better to run an ATI card on.
- Shadowgamers, on 05/09/2008, -9/+6Someone should revoke Nvidia's can-of-whoopass :[
- dsmx, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Not sure you can, they made a card, the 8800 and ATI still can't beat in conclusively to this day. Even the 9800 is still based on the 8800 card.
- RobotLeAwesome, on 05/09/2008, -18/+85BREAKING: Mediocre game holds onto spotlight longer than it should.
- frepnog, on 05/09/2008, -7/+4Excellent remark. Dugg.
- ngmcs8203, on 05/09/2008, -1/+11No replay factor, but I thought it was a pretty badass game. As far as this headline? Yea, a little over dramatic. I thought the article was going to be about the actual Knights Templar killing gamers who knew "too much".
- SSCrow, on 05/09/2008, -4/+10Assassins Creed is not Mediocre. Its most excellent.
- RobotLeAwesome, on 05/09/2008, -1/+14It had potential, but it was horribly repetitive.
- dynelol, on 05/09/2008, -2/+9So does Jade go all the way down or does she stop halfway?
- Planets, on 05/09/2008, -1/+2Neither, she just kicks you in the face.
- MrFisty, on 05/10/2008, -1/+4Either way, she sucks.
- eridius, on 05/09/2008, -4/+2Mediocre? Maybe on a PC. If you ever played it on a console, it was an amazing game. One of the rare games that I actually took the time to play all the way through, and am thinking about playing through a second time.
You remember that ridiculous video about how it takes, what, 11 steps to quit out of the game? Yeah, that's only something PC gamers have to worry about. That's because the game interface was designed for the console, where you can exit out with a single button press.- RobotLeAwesome, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1Assassins Creed.
Assassination 1. This is ***** cool!
Assassination 2. Wow, this world is pretty large.
Assassination 3. I'm doing the same thing, but farther away.
Assassination 4. see assassination 3
Assassination 5. see assassination 3
Assassination 6. see assassination 3
Assassination 7. see assassination 3
Assassination 8. see assassination 3
End - oh, cool - but that could of been a lot shorter.
I am kind of pumped about a sequel though, signs point to it taking place in Feudal Japan; and I have a feeling that they'll fix the the one obstacle that held the game back.- dynelol, on 05/09/2008, -2/+2COULD HAVE

- jknevitt, on 05/09/2008, -0/+25Oh, the irony.
- BothBarsOn, on 05/09/2008, -10/+0You're joking, right?
- BadseedJR, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10"anything this bad written."
I don't think he's joking. I believe you were looking for "badly written."- BadseedJR, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3Yeah, retract that since it was on purpose. I'm retarded.
- BearinG, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2"Where have all editors gone?" sounds a bit funky to me too but what do I know.. English isn't my first language.
- aladrin, on 05/09/2008, -0/+6There was an error in each of his sentences, actually...
- BadseedJR, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10"anything this bad written."
- BothBarsOn, on 05/09/2008, -4/+10I can't believe I have to explain this, but I was being ironic. There are errors in all three of my sentences. You know ... deliberate errors? To highlight my dismay at the errors in the article? Sigh.

- jknevitt, on 05/09/2008, -0/+25Oh, the irony.

- dynelol, on 05/09/2008, -1/+1The only appeal i see in it is the free online and being able to buy rock band songs in the i-tunes sorta thing they have. Not enough.

- soupnrc, on 05/09/2008, -3/+3The real scandal is that Assassin's Creed won't go away...
- diggerachi, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1I asked myself the same question after reading this. Scandal?.....Really?
"Yes, AMD has a similar cooperation in place, but it is not as extensive as Nvidia’s program."
This article sounds like pure speculation and rumor. If other companies are doing the same thing then what's the problem? This has nothing to do with Nvidia. This was a poorly ported game and has tons of bugs from launch.
- frepnog, on 05/09/2008, -11/+5Honestly, the game sucked. Badly. Is there ANYONE in the PC gaming world that really gives a ***** about AC?
- dimizzz, on 05/09/2008, -7/+1I suppose it must have been a revelation to the console crowd...
- frepnog, on 05/09/2008, -7/+1No, I really don't think it was, actually. It was hyped as a true next gen game, and then gamers got their hands on it and pretty much proclaimed it "meh". Once again, the hype let gamers down. The AI sucked, the missions were boring, the story was stupid, the play mechanics were awkward, you name it. The game just really wasn't that good at all.
- unrealmp3, on 05/09/2008, -4/+5I don't. Anyway more and more PC games are becoming DRM crippled, so I'm leaving PC gaming for consoles. I hate to have those games to "phone home" just to prove that I am not a thief.
- lacronicus, on 05/09/2008, -2/+7You do realize that consoles do the same thing, right? If you're caught using a modded Xbox, it'll be banned for the rest of its life; they can't find that out if they don't check.
- DJNephilim, on 05/11/2008, -1/+1If you never log in to XBL, then what would you get banned from? Not having XBL doesn't prevent you from playing store bought games. Nor does not having an account on PSN (for the PS3 owners), or not having registered your Wii with Nintendo. Your post is ***** and whoever dugg you are clueless.

- dimizzz, on 05/09/2008, -0/+4I probably would too, particularly now with gta4 and all, but I would hate the controller... I'm quite used to mouse+keyboard, using joysticks to target is frustrating.
- heresy_fnord, on 05/09/2008, -0/+5You're a jackass. The game has been a lot of fun so far, regardless of the fact that it has severely limited console gameplay.
- frepnog, on 05/09/2008, -3/+1That's like saying "I like caviar, even tho it tastes like crap." You can acquire a taste for anything. Doesn't mean it is good.

- Planets, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3Yes, I'm a PC gamer and I absolutely loved Assassin's Creed.
I have a question for you: if the PC version of Assassin's Creed is not only the *same* game, but also has *added* content, how is it better on a console? Or are you just riding the hate train? Do I even have to ask any more?- frepnog, on 05/10/2008, -3/+1Did you get lost? Who said the game was better on the console? I said the game was subpar. In my personal opinion, the game pretty much sucked overall, PC or console. From the people I know that have played it, and from the things I have seen and read about it, lots of other people felt close to the same.
- Planets, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2"Who said the game was better on the console?"
How about 50 comments saying "Assassin's Creed sucks on the PC anyway" ?
- Planets, on 05/11/2008, -0/+2"Who said the game was better on the console?"
- DJNephilim, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Personally, I enjoyed it on the console more because my 46in HDTV is much bigger than my 22in wide screen LCD, and my sofa is much more comfy than my office chair.

- barf314, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3/shrug. Part of my thinks they should take a queue from FunCom and let you choose which DX version you want, then the rest of me doesn't care because they're "removing it to re-implement it".
- iofthestorm, on 05/09/2008, -1/+4" In addition to addressing reported glitches, the patch will remove support for DX10.1, since we need to rework its implementation."
They're just removing it temporarily, it seems. Sounds like they'll add it back when they can get it to work again. Still smells fishy, but not that big of a "scandal." I didn't even know about this until this article, so how is this "scandal" not going away? Undugg. - trakie, on 05/09/2008, -0/+10i know the game didnt work for me (nvidia 8800gt, crashed after about 10-20mins of gameplay), but i saw somewhere in a forum that the no-dvd crack helped with other peoples problems. i tried it out and the game crashed once in the next probably 10 hours i played it. somehow i doubt my crashes were due to directx 10.1 but rather some stupid phone home make sure you are a paying customer *****...
- dynelol, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3Explain how the DRM works. Why can't you just turn your internet off and then play it?

- kingUssop, on 05/09/2008, -3/+2I know it's not popular to say about the performance leader, but I haven't liked Nvidia for years and years. They just consistently have this aura of playing dirty. Unfortunatelym Ati has screwed up too much, but I hope they return someday.
- kingUssop, on 05/09/2008, -3/+2Also, I'd like to add there's NO reason a game can't support a ton of different versions of Direct X, if the dev wanted. Many games do just that to cover the market. Saying they can't have dx 10 and 10.1 is a ***** joke.
- iofthestorm, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Yeah, it should be as simple as something like if(DX10.1) {code;} else if DX(10.0){code;} else {code;}. I'm not understanding how having DX10.1 support breaks cards that don't have DX10.1, but then I'm not a game developer, and my only experienced with DirectX is DX8/DX7 Directdraw.
- TrancePhreak, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Each version could be coded a bit differently, so it's a bit more work than just some if/else. It may require a big overhaul to the render pipeline. They say they are removing it temporarily and people get all suspicious, but it makes sense... They had time to fix the DX9 path, but not the DX10 one yet. DX10 is still somewhat new for developers, so it's a no-brainer that they might not have a good grasp of how it works yet.

- Vektuz, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2This is silly - if it really was crashing, it does make sense for them to temporarily remove that feature until it stops crashing.
- heathuff23, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1I gave up on the PC version of this...the game would crash halfway through the tutorial, and its impossible to troubleshoot because you can't skip that gay-ass intro. So, I would update or change something and have to sit there for 10-15 minutes watching them explain why they have him there before the tutorial starts...I gave up :(
- heresy_fnord, on 05/09/2008, -0/+3As an ATI owner (Crossfire 3870's) I will not be installing the patch.
- PDXpete, on 05/09/2008, -2/+1assassin's creed = fun for 10 minutes.
- maxsunset, on 05/10/2008, -0/+1...if you have ADD
- Wintermute426, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1I wouldn't exactly call it a scandal yet. Now, if the re-implementation of DX 10.1 were to coincide with Nvidia launching 10.1 compliant hardware...
- Nekura20x6, on 05/09/2008, -1/+3Just one more reason I'm glad I ditched PC gaming. I've owned 2 game consoles in 10 years (PS2 and X360), but would have had to upgrade my computer 4 - 6 times to keep pace and each of those upgrades could have bought me 2 more consoles. I don't have to load drivers or tweak the crap out of my system to make it perform well - I just pop in a disc and enjoy.
- Planets, on 05/09/2008, -0/+2Wait a minute..."EA's Crysis" ? EA only published the game, why is this guy giving them the credit?
- smek2, on 05/09/2008, -0/+1Conspiracy!!!
- volacide, on 05/10/2008, -1/+3I really dislike Nvidia greatly as a company. They sometimes make really excellent hardware but I've just seen them pull way too many really sneaky moves that I just cannot support.
Look at how many times they've been caught trying to fudge benchmark results. Early on in 3Dmark they wouldn't render what was off screen while ATi did. Both companies are allowed to make whatever optimizations for 3Dmark within reason but the whole point is to render the entire scene.
Then look at the MX line of cards. MX basically meant you're completely *****. I mean I can understand lowering clock speeds and stuff but when you start completely cutting out features of a set of hardware that's just unprofessional. Lower the clock speeds but don't take out the entire pixel shader ability for gods sake.
And what the ***** is this 9 series card, it should be called an 8800X2 because that's all it is. It's pure marketing BS. I have no problem with you slapping 2 cores onto one card but don't you dare try to sell me this card as if it's brand new hardware tech. A new series number should designate a completely revamped and redesigned core, not just double of the previous series.
So yeah, I stick with ATi. Sometimes they falter here and there but so do Nvidia. Look at the ATi 9 series cards, they demolished Nvidias competition. Then Nvidia went on to destroy ATi in the next one but ATi came back extremely strong with the X1K series which marked the first time where ATi even beat Nvidia in OpenGL games like Doom 3 and Quake 4. And what was most awesome about the X1K series was that you got this huge performance improvement just through new drivers. Let's also not forget HDR+AA.
Also, up until the 8 series Nvidia cards ATi had much superior image quality when it came to texture filtering and such and there was just no way around it. Try as you might to max out that 16xAF on your Nvidia card and it would say you were running 16xAF but in reality you'd only really be getting 4xAF in actual image quality.- korvan504521, on 05/10/2008, -1/+2why would you want your graphics card to waste time rendering stuff off screen?
- volacide, on 05/11/2008, -0/+1Every game you play is being rendered off screen to a certain degree. It's not the same as you're thinking when it comes to rendering though. If you think GPU's process only what's on screen and not what's just off screen you are sadly mistaken.
- mirunit, on 05/14/2008, -0/+1You are hanging on to terribly old technology. The FX/MX/ATI 9 series are all dead. Also the 9800 GTX/9800 GX2 are a stopgap - wait until GT200 and the 9900 GTX etc (july). In that case, what exactly does AMD/ATI have to answer? Not Much. No brand preference here, I just enjoy well-designed hardware. (I have owned a 8800 GTX for maybe 13 Months with no problems). Also the reason the FX series was so bad is because Nvidia was not given full DX9 specs from Microsoft (xbox greivences).
