arstechnica.com — Today Rockstar has released a patch for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 version of Grand Theft Auto IV. Online play should become a little smoother; Check out the change list after the jump.

      Have they fixed rubber banding vehicles and pedestrians?
      Have they fixed spawning in places that become ghost towns, where you have to run miles to find a vehicle?
      Have they fixed vehicles that you cannot steal, because the person just won't get out of the car?
      Have they fixed killing PCs who just stand there after you rocket them, when they are actually elsewhere on the map telling you they are in a helicopter?

      GTA4 has the worst netcode of any online game I've ever played. I might actually play it if the bugs were fixed.
    • xino, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1You can clear clear the cache on your Xbox 360 by accessing your Xbox 360 HDD via the Dashboard’s System Blade. Access the “memory” area and highlight the hard drive. Press Y, X, X, LB, RB, X, X and a message should appear: “Do you want to perform maintenance on your Xbox 360 storage devices?” Then select yes. One thing I noticed that happens when you do this is that all the patches you applied to your X360 games are gone. I thought I would mention this in case people want to go back to the shipping version of GTA 4 or any game to see and prove to others that the shipping version behaved differently. The only other way to remove patches is to delete all the game data for that game.

        • directrix13, on 06/25/2008, -0/+1I love GTA4. It is very fun (read: not a dud). I have spent numerous hours playing. But I probably just appreciate it for different reasons than you. I enjoy the online multiplayer experience with my friends. I enjoy exploring. The story line is just meh. But just ***** around in this game is awesome (which is all I was wanting anyway). I usually play just enough of the story to unlock all the islands.

      Long answer, from a muti-player lobby, hit "Select" and chose new game mode.. In a match, hit your cell phone button (UP Arrow) and choose multi-player like normal..

      Although, if in spectate mode, you are ***** out of luck and need to leave the game to single player..

I'll check it out when I get home, but I always seem to find myself looking at a short list with people dropping like flies, then the Host decides to change it from "Deathmatch" to "Let's Fold Laundry!" and we're the only two left in the room... If I want to play another Deathmatch, it seemed like my only option was to drop out of MP and re-launch from SP mode.

    How'd these guys manage to create such a beautiful game with MANY opportunities for aciton movie sequences and not throw in a replay. I'm sure they could've licensed a replay from somewhere.

  • ausfahrt, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4I just want to point out that it appears that the only fix for the freezing error is to have Sony replace your console. Looks like they have completely stopped trying to fix this through a patch. Not too impressed but i have a new console with a new 90 day warranty and am able to play the game now so i can't be too pissed. They did take forever to decide that replacement was the only way so i spent 4 weeks with the game not able to play it.

      I'm with you. GTA IV is a good game, a great game even, but it really is a paint-by-the-numbers next-gen sequel. It also has all the same camera/control/pacing/stability problems of the old PS2 games. Oh well.

Now that these developers have the patching crutch long-held by their PC counterparts, they'll be releasing sloppier and sloppier games until everyone expects a game to be unplayable right out of the box. Since I can't patch, I don't feel comfortable shelling out $60 for games that have playability issues.

In my opinion its the best game ever, The multiplayer rules, I don't understand what more you people expect out of a game, like your complaints are dumb. "oh i wish the camera was higher, or the game is too boring" What! it's a sandbox title, make it fun! use your imagination!! ! Oh wait maybe you expect the games makers to provide that. Also if you want the camera higher learn how to use the controller, I move the camera constantly when I drive, gotta check those blindspots. This game rules and all you haters can suck it!

    Seriously, they patch multiplayer. Who gives two ***** about multiplayer GTA?

I just started a GTA Race where there were no other visible opponents (though it kept changing status for who entered 1st place), and leaving the game has left it hung on the 'Loading' screen going back into single player.

    Sort out these more significant bugs soon, Rockstar.

  • warplayer, on 06/24/2008, -0/+4I suffer from a slow connection (stupid free apartment internet), and was unable to ever connect to a GTA4 online game. Halo3 works, COD4 works, TF2 is fine, but for some reason I just can't get online with GTA4. Hopefully I'll FINALLY be able to experience this awesome GTA multiplayer everyone is talking about. It sounds great.

  • SheepLicker, on 06/25/2008, -0/+2The patch was needed but felt forced, how about a patch that updates the game by letting the fun back in by rewarding players with unlimited ammo when they unlock 100%? I mean it was like that with the previous GTA titles, so it would make sense.

    Maybe I’m just pissed off because I collected all the pigeons, completed all the stunt jumps, stole all the text message cars only to find out that you’re not rewarded for anything apart from the Achievement. I don’t even know if I want to find all the random characters now. Lame. :/

    It was like “Hey, let’s get the player to do all this work for nothing!” instead of giving the player something useful.
